Beat the game there. The Meat Circus is absolutely one of the worst levels of any game I’ve ever played. Oh my god it’s absolutely awful. Its aged horribly. Which is a shame because the cutscenes are as good as ever and the humour is mixed perfectly with the darker content. The ending was also really good. I wish I didn’t feel so much relief that the game was over. Hopefully the second one is great and I kinda want to give Rhombus of Ruin a go, even if I’d need to dig out the PSVR.

Also, somewhat hilariously, the game crashed after the final cutscene and before the credits. Like straight up just killed itself. Thought for a second that it was a variant on a kill screen like an old SNES game.

@Mr-Fuggles777 no worries, it happens!

@nessisonett well done, nice one! I really didn't think meat circus was too bad actually. I am wondering if I had slightly different experience because I was leveled up ridiculously and also knew all the weird quirks of the game because I had to in order to level up that far.

I think I died quite a few times on meat circus so there's that I suppose. Maybe I am just used to death now (in video games πŸ˜…)

@ralphdibny The problem was lack of checkpoints. The escort mission bit just wouldn’t end and the dodgy platforming didn’t help when one mistake would send you back to the very start. Also, I had a glitch right at the end of the entire escort section when it randomly teleported me out of the tent and I had to start all over again. The rails section also suffered from poor platforming, I phased through the rail several times when I clearly made the jump. Add another pretty poor platforming section with rising water and some bosses with rubbish hit detection and it’s just a nightmare on every level.

ralphdibny

@nessisonett ahh fair enough. The escort section was a bit stressful actually and took me a few tries! Lame about the glitch though

To be fair, I was glitching that rail section anyway πŸ˜…. Once I'd collected all the figments from it, I was jumping off the main platform at a different point and floating down to a bit of rail much farther down to skip a load of it out lol

It was tricky for sure, I didn't necessarily think it was unfair though. I can't really think what upgrades the higher levels afforded me but maybe that had something to do with my easier ride

See ya!

KilloWertz

@ralphdibny I did not. I ended up getting another PS5 about a month ago and that's taken up my time between Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and replaying Final Fantasy 7 Remake via the PS5 version.

Maybe next month with A Plague Tale Innocence. I never finished that, and with the new gen version being out now, I might be able to squeeze it in next month after Final Fantasy 7 Remake and before Kena comes out on PS5.

@KilloWertz ah fair enough. I think Plague Tale was a recent PS Plus game actually. Not sure if it was the PS4 or PS5 version or if there's some sort of upgrade path

See ya!

KilloWertz

@ralphdibny It was the PS5 version. They give 2 PS4 games and 1 PS5 game away for free each month now since November.

Hi all, I am just doing the changeover now because I probably won't get time to do it over the weekend. Please do finish up Psychonauts if you are not quite there yet. We are all free to discuss it in this thread still despite the title change!

This month's game is A Plague Tale: Innocence.

HLTB stats:

Main Story - 10Β½ Hours
Main + Extras - 12Β½ Hours
Completionist - 16 Hours

I don't know anything about this game so I can hardly give it a worthy introduction! Play, enjoy, discuss. You all know the deal by now!

I don't think there's been any additional suggestions for September so here are some old and new suggestions

Psychonauts 2 (releases Aug 25th)
Mirrors Edge
Perfect Dark

Please vote for whatever you want to play and feel free to make suggestions and we can see if they gain some traction.

Ok, peace out! Enjoy your weekends!

I'm not sure if I'm going to join in for A Plague Tale as I have some stuff on this month. I'll try and give it a go at some point if I can!

I've already played A Plage Tale on the PS4. I've tried the enhanced version on the Series S for a few hours just to check its improvements. I don't mind replaying it in full, though. That's a very nice game, a double A narrative driven videogame with very good story and characters β€” not unlike Playstation exclusives like Uncharted and The Last of Us.

The story makes a turn to the supernatural in the second half that I was not expecting, and it felt a bit silly in my opinion, but the gameplay is still fun, a mix of stealth with puzzle solving and very occasional combat, since the player character is much frailer than the average enemy.

On the graphical side, this is a beautiful game, but by default it has a very high chromatic aberration effect that bothered me. You can disable it on the settings, though, and I think the game looks a lot better with it turned off.

For September, I will be playing the hell out of Psychonauts 2 anyway! But I don't think this game needs to be promoted to get us onboard. I think the club should go with one of the other options. Mirror's Edge has been in my backlog for quite a while, that would be a nice chance to finally play it.

Looking forward to giving Plague Tale a go soon! I probably won't start it immediately as my Game Pass runs out in a couple of days and I have some things I need to do in the first week of August, as well as other games to play. As for the September game, I agree with @Magabro that we probably don't need to include Psychonauts 2 as part of Game Club as a lot of people will be playing it anyway. Here's my list of suggestions for September:

Mirror's Edge
Perfect Dark
The Outer Worlds
Quantum Break
Ori and the Will of the Wisps
Kameo: Elements of Power
Dante's Inferno
Crysis

I'm not sure about The Outer Worlds though, as it says that the game's main story takes around 13 hours to complete (and I know from other people that the game is quite short). But given it's a Western RPG like Fallout, maybe it's even longer if you do side quests. Maybe someone can confirm this? In that case just remove it from the list as it may be too long.

Because it's been quite some time since we played Alan Wake and Ori and the Blind Forest, I feel like I'm ready now to play through Quantum Break and Ori and the Will of the Wisps. Would also be nice to check out some older games like Kameo, Mirror's Edge, Perfect Dark, Dante's Inferno and Crysis, so I'm adding those to my list as well.

So I kinda lied about playing A Plague Tale later since I've been so bored today that I've been wanting to play lots of new games. I played through the first chapter of the game and I can't believe how brutal the story is. It has definitely got me intrigued and I might play through it sooner than I thought. Either way, the game is looking to be a very promising experience!

LtSarge

ralphdibny

@LtSarge lots of those sound like good shouts, particularly the sequels to games we've played. Quantum Break looks awesome, as does Ori.

Not sure about The Outer Worlds though, I suspect it's the sort of game where the side content is going to be something you will want to do rather than just rushing through the campaign. It looks good but perhaps too lengthy for it to be a comfortable GC game.

Kameo looks interesting and i think is an Xbox exclusive so could be good to experience that even though I know nothing about it really.

Not sure what that Dante's Inferno is, had a look for it online and I became guilty of judging a book by it's cover πŸ˜…

See ya!

LtSarge

@ralphdibny Yeah I also think The Outer Worlds might have a lot of side content, which would increase playtime to 20+ hours. Probably best to be on the safe side and cross that off. I included it simply because it's a first-party IP now and it would be cool to check out more Xbox IPs in general.

I believe Kameo was a 360 launch game by Rare and people seemed to enjoy it for the most part. It doesn't sound like it's one of the best games by Rare but it does look like it's worth playing.

Don't worry, it's exactly what you think it is, i.e. a God of War clone. I've been wanting to play it for quite some time since it's been a while since I've played a "traditional GoW game" so to speak lol. And I just remembered it's on EA Play so it's on Game Pass Ultimate for people to play.

@LtSarge haha fair enough. I did look a bit more into Dante's inferno but im not sure I can get excited for it. I do love Hell in media and I'm somewhat interested in what i assume is the source material of The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri but yeah, the game looks a bit generic. I think God of War is generic and pretty boring for most of it so I can't imagine how I'd get on with a clone πŸ˜‚

Speaking of Hell, Satan and all manner of demons and Dark Lords... I just finished Doom Eternal and it's DLC for the push Square game club. It's bloody awesome, brilliant game!! I can't remember if you'd said you'd played it before? It's definitely one of the best games from the PS4/xb1 generation in my opinion and by far the best first person shooter of that gen, if not for many generations. It's become the third pillar of my now 3 favourite Xbox games of Forza Horizon 4, Ori and the Blind Forest and now Doom Eternal πŸ˜…

Also speaking of Ori (apologies for the double tangent), they've announced a physical double pack for Switch. I really wish they'd do that for Xbox one too. Blind Forest never came out physically in the UK and while I know it's on game pass, it's a series that I'd really like to own on disc. I'd take either a physical Blind Forest as Will of the Wisps is available physically over here or a physical Double Pack. I just want to buy them on Xbox really!

LtSarge

@ralphdibny To be fair, I think a lot of people feel that way with the old GoW games in general, lol. That's probably why the series received such a surge in popularity after the 2018 PS4 game because it changed up the formula completely.

Oh congrats mate! No, I haven't played Eternal yet, although I own all of the DOOM games. I've played through DOOM 1 and 2 and I'm like 1/3 of the way through DOOM 64. I'm playing through the series in order so I'll be playing DOOM 3 next, then DOOM (2016) and finally Eternal. But yeah, the modern DOOM games seem like amazing FPS titles, I can't wait to give them a go. Speaking of which, I actually started up Wolfenstein II today and it's bloody awesome as well. I'm guessing you're done with the DOOM series now, so will you be playing through Wolfenstein next?

Yeah that's totally understandable. It does feel like Blind Forest is kinda out of the question now for a physical release on Xbox. Perhaps Limited Run Games will release a physical version in the future if there's a high enough of a demand.

@LtSarge not sure if it's really LRG's bag to be honest. There was a physical of Blind Forest in the US already so probably not much point in LRG picking it up. I just want them to do a UK release but yeah, its a bit mental how one of the top Xbox games has a physical release on Switch but not on its own platform!

I am more or less done with Doom now. I skipped over Final Doom which is included in the modern ports of Doom and Doom 2 as downloadable megawads. The Plutonia Experiment and TNT Evilution are the two megawads that make up Final Doom so I think I'll go back and play that one at least seeing as it is an "official" Doom game that got proper releases on PC and PS1. I skipped them because I was a bit Doom-ed out on retro Doom and just wanted to move on and try 64. But yeah, Final Doom will be the nail in the coffin on the series for me I think. When I get time to play it that is.

I'm not in a major hurry to start Wolfenstein but I will be starting with 3D and working my way through them in release order. I've got the first 3 on PC, the one on PS3 and the modern ones on Xbox and one on PSVR. Still waiting for Wolf2 DLC to go on sale (by itself) on Xbox.

I'm glad Wolf2 has had a positive impression on you so far though! I think when I played New Order before, it was just a bit random. I had no real connection to the series apart from playing a bit of 3D when I was young and I didn't really know what was going on. There were certainly some cool and shocking moments in the game but I think playing the whole series would help me contextualise it a bit.

I'm about halfway through Skyward Sword now and I think my next game will be Mafia for the PushSquare gameclub. I saw some of your posts where you mentioned you'd finished that recently. I'm a bit on the fence as to whether I should play it classic or modern πŸ˜…. I know you mentioned that the QoL improvements for the modern rules is way better but I'm still tempted to go classic, I think I'm just a masochist πŸ˜‚. I had the original version on PC. Not sure how far I got in it but I remember the last thing I did and got stuck on and never continued the game from, was the race around the track. I'd quite like to see the rest of the game to be honest!!

See ya!

LtSarge

@ralphdibny I should probably give 3D a go as well. The only platform I know it's available on is 360, which is weird lol. Regardless, it's only €5 there so I might pick it up eventually. Regarding the Wolfenstein 2 DLC, I actually did some research since I was wondering if the season pass is worth picking up or not and apparently a lot of people didn't find the DLC worth it at all. So unless you're a completionist, I think it's fine to skip the DLC if you want to. But yeah, hopefully you'll enjoy the series this time around!

I would personally not recommend playing Mafia on Classic, especially if it's your first time playing it lol. It's just so annoying having to abide by the rules when you're a freaking gangster! Stopping at a red light, activating a speed limiter for your car, being careful not to hit any cars or the drivers will call the police on you, and so on. I just don't find these aspects all that appealing when games are supposed to promote escapism. But who knows, maybe you'll find that stuff appealing since not a lot of games do that kind of stuff, which is cool I guess.
