Just wanted to see what everyone's favorite Role Playing Game is.
For the longest time my favorite was Final Fantasy IV until a 2012 when I played Persona 4: Golden. Persona 4 quickly became my favorite RPG I have ever played as I loved the characters, the set-up and everything about the game.
I'm also a big fan of a lot of Atlus' RPGs in general as I also enjoy SMT: Devil Survivor, Etrian Odyssey, Shin Megami Tensei IV and a few others.
I don't get the chance to play lengthy RPGs that often but hopefully in the future i'll have more time for one of my favorite genres.
I have only played Dark Souls, so that is my favourite. As it happens, I'm still on my first play through. I believe I'm getting Lords of the Fallen off my wife for Christmas so I'll be getting something to compare it to.
Shadow Hearts. It gets very little recognition by the majority, if they've even heard of it, and that makes me sad. The sequels were a little meh... But the original? Outstanding.
@captainhetty, i also loved shadow hearts on the ps2. i was hoping for a trilogy collection for xbox one. but i don't think that will be happening soon.

Well if you want to get technical my favorite RPG is good ole fashion table top Dungeon and Dragons. I use to play that alot in jr. high and hish school and into my early 20's but then stopped playing it do to real life (kids, jobs etc.) Now my son is old enough and is showing a huge interest in it so I have been dusting off my old books and what not and teaching him how to play along with some of his friends. When he approached me and asked me to teach him how to play I had a huge nerdgasim lol. The day that I hoped would come finally did.
As far as video game RPGS go my favorite would have to be World of Warcraft. I am still amazed the large scale this game is. I love the lore, I love that there is so much to do and the fact that it is a living breathing world.
Console RPGs would have to go to Final Fantasy VI (or III on the SNES) This was my first full scale video game RPG that I beat on my own. Everything is great IMO the cast of characters, the dark setting of the game, and of course the main villain Kefka. For me no other FF game comes close to the magnitude that is FF VI.
Nowadays its hard for me to get into console RPGs mainly cause I dont have a whole lot of gaming time, and honestly if I want to play something like Skyrim or Dragon Age I have WoW for that. Mostly if I am in the mood for a console RPGs I go back and play some of the older ones like Suikoden or Legend of Dragoon.

That is awesome! I don't have any kids but I can't think of anything better than when they show an interest in something you love as well. Has to be so rewarding as a parent.
Skyrim, which is pretty safe and boring I'll admit, but only because for a long time me and RPGs acted like people who had had a huge fight ages ago, forgot why we were mad in the first place, but were too stubborn to make up and get along.
I don't think it helped much that when I did try and get into them I started with The Witcher 2. Put me off for ages.
I'd also give a sneaky shout-out to Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords. The RPG elements (party, sidequests, load-out management and levelling up) were a lot of fun for a game that was basically Bejewelled battles over and over. Love that game.

Shadow Hearts on PS2 was awesome. I reviewed it for a now-defunct publication and gave it an 8/10. Instant hate mail from everybody who loves Final Fantasy. How dare say any other game can be good?
Ironically enough though, my favourite RPGs would be Final Fantasy VII (one of two games to ever make me actually cry) and Final Fantasy VIII. Skies of Arcadia and Shenmue would be right up in the top mix as well.
I would have said Wild Arms, but I replayed it recently and it does not hold up well at all. For fear of being obvious then, I'll go with Suikoden 1 & 2. Suikoden was wonderful, I've never played anything like it since, in fact, if anyone knows a game like it - let me know! I
OMG I loved the whole gather people for an army bit of Suikoden and I agree I have not played anything since that as well. I only got to play II once and got about half way through it, I borrowed it from a friend but gave it back to him cause he wanted to play it again. Before I could borrow it again and finished it he traded it in to Gamestop for another game. Now I am lucky if I can find that game cheap.

Favourite would have to be Oblivion and then Mass Effect 2. I'm hoping that Dragon Age will become my new favourite when I get it for xmas...
Again all very mainstream and 'western'. I really can't get into these JRPG's (tried really hard to get into Ni No Kuni for example) but they just don't really do it for me. The last FF I enjoyed was 10 on the PS2. Maybe it's my age now but I just find the stories in them are so ridiculous and hard to follow that I lose interest. I'm also not a fan of grinding and random battles so they're a hard sell for me.
Forgot Ni No Kuni. As a huge Ghibli fan, that was absolutely perfect for me. Loved it.
Wish they'd re-release it on PS4. It's the only PS3 game I actually miss, now that The Last of Us is out on PS4.
I keep forgetting about Ni No Kuni. Every time I remember that I still need to buy it, I end up not having the time to sink into such a lengthy adventure, so I push it to the back of my mind. If it shows up on PS4 at some point, though, I'll make sure to grab it.
