It's been 24 years since Star Wars Episode 1 Racer first launched for Nintendo 64 and Windows PC, and back in 1999 it was considered one of the most beloved Star Wars (and racing) games on the market. After finally receiving an Xbox port back in 2020 courtesy of Aspyr, you can now claim it for free as part of Xbox Games with Gold!
In my personal opinion, it's definitely worth your time - even if you're not a big Star Wars fan. The first thing you'll notice - aside from the really crisp visuals on Xbox - is just how smooth the actual racing feels, as well as the immense sense of speed that comes with it. There's definitely an adjustment period as you get accustomed to the handling of the pods, which admittedly feel quite light at first and tough to maneuver in tight situations, but once you've mastered the braking system along with the (slightly confusing) boosting and repairing mechanics, you'll settle into a rhythm that makes you feel like a Podracing superstar.
The way the campaign works is pretty simple. You pick your chosen competitor (from a lineup that includes the likes of young Anakin Skywalker and the menacing Sebulba), embark on a series of races across the galaxy, and use those victories to improve your pod over time. This all begins with the race from Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace known as the "Boonta Eve Classic", which is a faithful and largely forgiving representation of the famous circuit.
The brilliant thing about Star Wars Episode 1 Racer is that once you've completed the first course, its creativity really begins to shine. You'll find yourself racing in lava-soaked caves, careening through the clouds as part of a notoriously difficult track called "Abyss", and even sliding and skidding your way across icy lakes. It's consistently entertaining stuff, and the later stages definitely provide a welcome degree of challenge, truly putting your skills to the test as you attempt to steer around hazardous obstacles at extremely high speeds.
In terms of the actual Xbox port itself, you don't really get too much here - it's still the same Star Wars Episode 1 Racer experience from 1999, but with (much) cleaner visuals, modernised controls and the addition of Xbox achievements. Nevertheless, I still think it's an absolute blast to play on Xbox in 2023, and the only thing it's really missing is online multiplayer. Without that, the game feels a little redundant after you've completed the main campaign, although I do still find myself jumping back into my pod as little Anakin every now and again!
These days, it's not very often that I find myself enjoying a game as much as I did back in the 20th century, but Star Wars Episode 1 Racer definitely falls into that category. In fact, I think I've had more fun with the Xbox port of this game than I ever did with the Nintendo 64 version in 1999. This is a great addition to Xbox Games with Gold in May 2023, and one of the better Star Wars games on the platform. Hopefully you enjoy it as much as I have!

I'll definitely be playing through this. I was the outlier who got the N64 without Super Mario 64 because my parents would only get one game to start with and I made that Shadows of the Empire
(I did get Mario next!). I'm fairly sure the speeder bike level in Mos Eisley paved the way for Episode 1 Pod Racer as the sense of speed eclipsed even Extreme G at the time.
This article makes me think how happy I would be with Extreme-G remasters.
EDIT:
@TJ81 I read your comment after writing mine. I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one that mentions that game in this short thread.
Been playing it since it first released on the Xbox One. An absolute blast.
I still have the 64 cartridge and I have emulated the game plenty but I will claim it and probably check it out here too.
@Kaloudz im in on a FH star wars expansion. I didn't know i wanted such a thing.... now look what you've done😂👍
@Kaloudz - ever since the Hotwheels FH5 expansion I’ve been saying they should do a Wipeout style expansion (or full game) so I’m totally in agreement a pod racer expansion would be great 👍
@Kaloudz 🤣 my 8 and 6 year old are past waking at silly times.. mostly. Biggest issue is me waking at 2 or 3 and then im up! Its like i didnt get enough sleepless nights with my babies and now im spiting myself 😂👍
Now you've mentioned Wipeout im also thinking about F-Zero, dare i hope Nintendo will ever do anything with it again? It'd be amazing if somehow playground games got to do some crossover racing DLC that really would be something 👍
Has to be the best Games with Gold for a while. This game was great back in the day, I played it again via N64 not too long ago and it still holds up, and I've had this remaster in my wishlist for a while. Great news
I loved podracing, wished they expanded upon it.
This was my favourite game back in 2003. I still remember that year pretending to be sick in school so I could come home and play pod racer instead. This was all before I had got my first Xbox in 2004.
I’ve come back to it a few times over the years and nearly bought it when it was on sale in recent times, so I’ll be glad to pick this up for free.
I’ll never forget the tune that Watto from the junkyard was often found humming. The Junkyard upgrades and discounts is what made the game so fun and addictive for me back then.
I might give it a go later, for now I’m getting my Star Wars fix from Jedi Survivor.
It's a new lap record!!!
There's nothing like a dose of pure gaming nostalgia.
Would love to see a modern pod-racer.
Wow, this is the first gold game that doesn't suck in like 5 years! Sure it's an N64 game, and that's kind of sad, but still.....were starting to compete with NSO.....so that's....something.
@ShinobiWan1 If I live to 100, that phrase will still be burnt into my memory. Haha.
@Kaloudz ive always been a light and bad sleeper. Still it has its benefits ive seen many films and tv shows in those hours of insomnia. Perpetual tiredness becomes easy😂
F-Zero is a Nintendo game. Nintendo seems to have forgotten about it sadly😭👍
