A new year in gaming is upon us, which means plenty of Xbox reveals to get excited about, games to dig into, and knowing Microsoft - industry-shaking announcements to bare witness to in 2025.
With a busy 2024 now behind us, then, we're looking ahead to the next 12 months in the world of Xbox. What will the team deliver on this year? Will all of its scheduled-for-2025 games actually make it out this year? Only time will tell!
Without further ado, here are some Pure Xbox predictions for Team Green in 2025:
1. Microsoft's 'This Is An Xbox' Campaign Will March On

OK, this is a pretty safe bet to start out with here, but we can't see Xbox pumping the brakes on its new 'This is an Xbox' ad campaign anytime soon. Just this week, the team used its new imagery in tandem with an LG TV announcement, and yeah - we think this is going to be a very regular thing throughout 2025. We might not be quite close enough to start talking about next-gen consoles in detail yet, but that won't stop Microsoft pushing Xbox onto new devices in the next 12 months.
2. Gears of War: E-Day Gets A Massive Blowout At The Xbox Summer Showcase

We're not ready to commit to a prediction about Gears of War: E-Day actually coming out this year, but we feel very confident that we're going to see extended gameplay during the summer months of 2025. Gears has always liked a big E3-style showcase, and with E-Day being teased during last year's show, we reckon it's time for a major showing this year. We're talking a big old 10+ minute breakdown of campaign gameplay from The Coalition - come on, we deserve it after waiting so long since Gears 5!
3. If Fable Launches This Year, It'll Be A Big Success For Xbox

Playground Games has been a bit of a revelation since Xbox acquired the studio a good few years ago now, but they've stuck purely to the Forza Horizon series so far. However, in recent times they've been tasked with rebooting Fable - and we have faith that the British studio will do a stellar job. Sure, it's been in development for a while now and sure, we've not seen much gameplay footage yet, but we've got a good feeling about this one being an all-time Xbox great. Unfortunately we're not quite as confident in Fable actually launching in 2025, but for what it's worth - here's hoping!
4. Forza Horizon 5 Will Be Xbox's Next Major PS5 Port

Sticking to Playground Games for a minute here, Xbox's PS5 ports are clearly going to continue into 2025, and we reckon the next major one will be 2021's Forza Horizon 5. We've heard rumblings of this happening already — one rumour even said that the PS5 version is pretty much ready to go — so we're saying that 2025 is the year Forza makes its PlayStation debut. That would mark the first of Xbox's holy trinity (Halo, Gears, Forza) to make its way over - something we think is bound to happen sooner rather than later.
5. Xbox Handheld Sees Early Prototypes Leak

Recently, Phil Spencer confirmed that Xbox's handheld system is still a few years out, but we know work is underway on the device right now over at Microsoft HQ. That HQ isn't always the most water-tight though, and we could easily see some early prototype work leaking out this year. Whether that's via external reports or other means, chatter about the Xbox portable will go on in 2025 - and we think this year will deliver some rough prototype work on the system in some form or another.
6. Rare's Everwild Remains MIA In 2025

Last week, we asked our readers if Rare's next shared-world adventure Everwild would be seen sometime in 2025, but truth be told - we just can't see it happening. Yes, the dev team shared a brand-new screenshot from the game at the tail end of last year, but we still have no real idea what this game is, and it very much feels like Rare is still figuring that out as well. We feel confident in predicting that Everwild won't release this year, and truth be told, we're almost as sure that we won't see any gameplay footage in 2025 either. Maybe 2026 will be Rare's year, eh?
7. Classic Call Of Duty Finally Arrives On Xbox Game Pass

We predicted something similar last year (at least for the summer showcase anyway) but 2025 has to be the year that classic COD comes to Xbox Game Pass, right? We've started to see PC versions of older series entries show up on the Microsoft Store, which is a good indication that Xbox is planning broader Game Pass releases for these titles. And, now that Black Ops 6 is out and has proved to be a huge hit for Microsoft, we can see them plugging up the quieter months with some old-school Call of Duty on XGP.
8. 'Microsoft Gaming' Gets Another Leadership Shakeup

Xbox execs seem to be moving about all over the place as of late, and with Microsoft's gaming enterprise becoming somewhat unwieldy after multiple big acquisitions, we can see this continuing into 2025. Some of us at the PX offices also have our suspicions that long-time Xbox boss Phil Spencer could actually move on from the company sometime soon - but 2025 may be a bit early for that. Call it a hunch, but certain decisions as of late just don't jive with what Phil has always said during his time as the chief! We'll just have to wait and see about the future of Xbox leadership, but we think more changes are afoot.
9. Xbox Finally Unveils The Elite Controller Series 3

We've been waiting for an Xbox Elite Controller refresh this entire generation so far, and it's got to come sooner rather than later, right? There's always a chance that Microsoft wants to save this reveal until next generation, but given that the Elite Series 2 launched in 2019 (the final year of Xbox One), it's not that unreasonable to expect an Elite Series 3 to do something similar. Whatever Microsoft might do with this thing, we just hope Xbox finally sorts out the reliability issues that plagued its first two controllers.
10. Future Starfield Expansions Cancelled To Focus On The Elder Scrolls 6

Starfield: Shattered Space hardly set the world alight last year, and with that being the only expansion that Bethesda has formally committed to in its premium DLC packs, we think the team will stop there. We have heard that more expansions have been in the team's plans at some point, but with the first DLC's mixed reception and the world's ravenous appetite for The Elder Scrolls 6, we think Bethesda Game Studios goes all hands on deck with that one during 2025 and beyond. As for when TES6 actually launches? We'll probably be waiting a good while yet.
And, there you have it - those are just 10 of our Xbox predictions as Microsoft heads into 2025. Of course, the year ahead will no-doubt provide some big surprises — we look forward to seeing how wrong we were in a year's time — so, let's all see how 2025 shakes out for Microsoft. Here's to another big year in the world of Xbox!

A prediction for this month
In typical xbox bad luck, they will have a great developer direct in the next couple weeks but it will be completely overshadowed by the official switch 2 announcement around the same time.
Im hoping for a imminent January developer direct announcement any day now to get another look at Avowed, and possibly find out actual release dates for anything else coming before Microsofts not-E3 video.
@BacklogBrad - unless the Switch 2 IS an Xbox 😋
I hope all these predictions are wrong except the Starfield and Fable ones! I know the Gears one is likely though, even if I don’t like Gears. I hope we see Everwild in some capacity and honestly, if Phil leaves, he’ll be leaving with Xbox in a weird spot. It’d feel like continuing that sinking ship press spin even if next year otherwise has a good trajectory. Next year looks like the year the ship is steering into better waters, so I’d hope Phil at least leads to a better spot before being the scapegoat for the Xbox Dark Ages. It would be nice if Phil was there to see his vision finally succeed.
@Divide_and_Wander it probably will have a lot of xbox published games available.
I love Series X, not just because of new and excellent games like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle playing and looking like a dream, but also because of how quiet and efficient it is.
My favourite things about this generation are quality of life features like Quick Resume and performance improvements like FPS Boost. If you like having a varied library of new and old games without paying extra, it's either PC or Xbox. Fortunately, Xbox also has Play Anywhere. For me, enhanced and free backwards compatibility is the best thing about Xbox and you can't get that anywhere else except PC and still you would be missing Xbox and Xbox 360 titles.
My favourite controller ever is the Xbox Elite Series 1, because of the size and shape. It was also the first Xbox controller I used because it was bundled with the Xbox One in 2016 and that was when I tried Xbox for the first time.
I wasn't used to regular controllers because I also had the Xbox Elite Series 2, but it broke after a couple of years. I got a new one but returned it because it had a funny stick that hit the frame earlier than it should. Then I tried the Series X controller and I have to admit that after a while, I loved it. It's light but very solid and the D-pad is the best ever, maybe Sega fans would argue this. The triggers and bumpers are reliable. I like the light tension of the sticks and the colour buttons. I only miss the paddles.
Xbox Series Elite 3 has been expected for many years on hardware sites, but it hasn't come. I think Microsoft should keep things simple. Release a new console that could come in 2028 as originally intended, a handheld console and a single controller. I'd like that controller to be like the Series X controller, but with added features, especially hall effect sticks and paddles and maybe motion controls. I love the rumble in the triggers that was introduced last generation, but the rest of the controller could have improved rumble.
Regarding games, we are getting the best and more varied games on Xbox ever. Xbox 360 introduced beloved IPs, but we have more variety now. Complaints used to be Xbox One has no games, now same people say that Xbox games are too many and available everywhere. Troubled development has always been a thing, but if we played what we have instead of complaining about delays and upcoming games while also complaining about our backlog, we would be happier gamers.
The one about Fable is a bold claim. Let's hope you guys are right. 🙏🏻
@Banjo- I agree wholeheartedly with your final point. We've never had it so good as gamers. I have a backlog that could last years and at the same time there are many great looking upcoming titles. Whatever platform(s) you use, we have so much choice. There have always been system/brand exclusives and troubled development cycles but I don't see any real issues for gamers other than adapting to this new age of digital 'ownership' and navigating various subscription models.
I'm fairly certain those who are expressing any form of discontent are spending too much time on gaming websites or watching attention seeking influencers/streamers instead of actually playing games. Take it from an 80's kid, gaming has never been better.
Removed - trolling/baiting
Gears of War is usually given a gameplay reveal a year before it is released, and I believe that E-Day is a launch title for the 'Prime', so if E-Day is shown then I think I will be proven right that the 'Prime' is releasing next year.
When it comes to Phil Spencer leaving, I have said for a while that I think he is a hostage to his contract. I don't think he likes where the company is heading, but is obliged to be seen supporting it because that's his role. I believe this is why we have seen so little of him since the ABK acquisition, and Sadella basically pulling the carpet from underneath Spencer. So often we see Spencer accused of lying, when I think the truth is that the company has taken a handbrake turn that has meant the things he said in the past are no longer where Xbox is heading.
I really like Spencer, and it will be shame to see him go, but having someone in place that does not agree with the direction the company he works for is taking, cannot be good for him and his mental health. He is only 55 years of age, and therefore still have plenty of working years ahead of him, should he wish that. I just hope he joins, or sets up a gaming company where he will be appreciated. What I really would be interested in though, is if Spencer were able to release a tell-all book details a behind the scenes look at his time in charge of Xbox. This type of book wouldn't usually interest me, but knowing, and understanding exactly what is going on behind the scenes at Xbox would be fascinating
You say fingers crossed, @Millionski, is that because you want your predictions to come true? 🤔
@Kezelpaso I'm not sure if Forza Horizon 5 being the next Xbox game to be ported to PS5 is a good call. On paper, yes, port it over and reap the benefits. However, is it worth porting over a game that'll inevitably be delisted from digital storefronts in a few years? For context:
Forza Horizon - released 2012, delisted 2016
Forza Horizon 2 - released 2014, delisted 2018
Forza Horizon 3 - released 2016, delisted 2020
Forza Horizon 4 - released 2018, delisted 2024
Forza Horizon 5 released in 2021 so, going by the past trend, we can probably expect it to be delisted this year at the earliest, 2027 at the latest.
Take it from a 60's kid, who is now into their 60s, @16BitHero, you're right, we've never had it so good as gamers. It's the state of Xbox as a console division that is where the problems really lie...
@Fiendish-Beaver trolling mostly lol.
But overall if band aid would be ripped off completely, like just kill xbox and move on - maybe even better. I have ocd already with all these news.
Would be peaceful to see no doom & gloom and just be with sucessful platforms with clear strategy.
Yeah technically anyone in the chat can just close this website, sell their xboxes abd move on but lets admit we all cant because we love the platform.
I'll try a few that will inevitably backfire hilariously.
1. Of the 5 first party titles expected for 2025 (Outer Worlds 2, Avowed, new doom, South of Midnight, and Fable) 2 will be extremely disappointing. (Probably Fable and Avowed).
2. Forza Horizon 6 will be revealed this year, and will be set in Japan.
3. The next PS5 port announced will Flight Simulator 2024.
4. 2025 will be the strongest year for game pass yet (thanks heavily to first party releases.)
5. Indiana Jones will get higher review scores on PS5 than on Xbox (because it would be funny). It will also release on the Switch 2.
@16BitHero I also agree completely with your conclusion, "I'm fairly certain those who are expressing any form of discontent are spending too much time on gaming websites or watching attention seeking influencers/streamers instead of actually playing games."
I read a guy that said that because of the negative feedback that high-profile games receive from one user base or the other, the negativity was ruining his enjoyment somehow in spite of liking the game, so he decided to stay away from those threads. I understand that. The funny thing is that the most vocal posters had not played the game, you can tell by the lack of specifics.
@Banjo- I will add that while I enjoy some of the more articulate and nuanced YouTube critiques of games I like - I tend to watch them after I've played the game. It's true that no matter your IQ, we're all somewhat susceptible to different forms of influence whether it be criticism of a film, TV show, book or video game (among many other things!). I'd simply advise that if you think it's your kind of thing then give it a go before seeking the opinions of others.
@16BitHero I like reading and watching honest reviews and comments (no trolls and haters), but when I'm really liking a game, I prefer to play without external influence. After that, I usually get more curious and read about the development, reviews, etc., to learn how the game was born and if people liked the same things as me and what their complaints were. For instance, I just beat Dead Rising and then I read about its development and series rankings made by fans. I will post about it on the Last Game You Played thread. It's a game that I never tried in spite of having it with Gold, because I thought that it was mindless killing. It isn't and I love it.
Oblivion Remaster announcement imminent
Gears E-Day day 1 on Playstation, what Phil's no red lines comment was softening us up for
There will be no shakeup at MS Gaming, these people repeatedly failed upwards for the last 10 years, killing Xbox and "growing revenue" by just consolidating the industry, not growing anything. Just existing revenue with a new owner. Aaron Greenberg in particular has shown himself to be so bad at his job that I wouldn't even hire him to work the frialator at McDonalds.
Forza Horizon 5 is a tricky port because it was very dependent on weekly events, and that's pretty much over now with stuff on repeat. You can dump the whole thing on PS5 but it's definitely less value. Also, if it's like other Forza games and the license lasts for X years, then Playstation owners will get it for X-4 years.
edit: i see @Markatron84 made my last point before me with even more, better detail.
more confused, mixed messaging from xbox.
more people jumping ship to PS5 and PC.
fable is a disaster.
expect the worst and you can't be disappointed...
@Banjo- ah yes, it's a bonafide classic and worthy of the recent remake in my opinion. The second is a lot of fun too but that's where the series ended for me. I'm in the same boat regarding what you mentioned about game development. I'm reading A Perfect Organism which is companion book for Alien Isolation fans. There is certainly a lot of good gaming content on YouTube if you can sift through the not so good stuff.
@16BitHero I have read terrible things about the remake of Dead Rising: easy, boring, overloaded graphics, messy park, censorship... The franchise I have read the most about is Resident Evil and, in second place, Project Zero/Fatal Frame. I find Resident Evil characters and pseudo-scientific lore intriguing and fascinating from 0 to 6. I love the classic Zelda games as much, especially Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess, but I find the IP's encompassing history and chronology shoehorned and boring. I don't understand why people on NL are so excited about it... I need a Code Veronica remake and more Project Zero remasters. 😁
With russia developing its own console sadly I see xbox slipping to 4th place in 25 😢
@Banjo-
Nice analysis. I am a proud owner of a 2024 Xbox Series S reboot, and I will love Xbox for a long time. HOWEVER, they really try to trick people up with Game Pass Ultimate. Xbox was way more successful with the Xbox One and original Series X and Disc drives, but now its practically impossible to own an Xbox and enjoy certain EA games and Ubisoft games without having Game Pass. If I were to BUY Madden 25, I would need Game Pass anyway just to play multiplayer online. I mostly play Star Wars Battlefront (as my profile picture says 😊) but I always need Game Pass to play multiplayer. So even if I wanted to buy it, Game Pass is important.
@Deljo
I doubt anyone would trust a foreign Russian Console anytime soon. It's not like Xbox is going to DIE like Atari and SEGA did, but Microsoft needs to try harder and take the Gaming War more seriously!
@UserTK-421 Thanks and that's right as well, you need Game Pass, but you can get the cheapest Core tier if you only want the online features. Then, right, you either pay for Ultimate for EA games or buy games separately. If you only play a few games, I think Game Pass Core is a better deal.
@UserTK-421 just a joke buddy, the Russian thing sounds sh1te 😀
I stand by that Xbox is absolutely at its worst right now. The leadership is so derived of talent and people who know what they're doing that it's hard to really care.
I'm not interested in waiting years for Japanese games or pretending like its my go too console because that simply isn't true.
The Xbox Original was the golden age of the brand for me. People who loved games but also knew what they were doing; Spencer is downright pathetic and Bond isn't any better.
I'm also not interested in them buying up publishers and then pretending like they've contributed so much to the companies when that's disingenious and not true either.
I'm stunned that people love Quick Resume because I've had nothing but issues with it either crashing the games entirely, causing visual or audio glitches or the controller no longer responding correctly.
No doubt this comment will be removed for not being positive or attacked cause "Sony fan (which is also a lot of nonsense)" but eh, I'm not going to pretend I love the state of the brand or their mediocre current console.
Can see them keeping the elite series 3 for the new console. Because it wouldn't make sense to release it without all the extra features the new standard controller will have like haptics.
There is already some amount of games releasing this year. So it's possible that Fable slips to 2026. If it does, then Fable, Gears of War, Horizon 6 and Halo remake should probably be the day 1 games for the new console. Which would be a killer line up, though they'll probably shoot themselves in the foot and make series S and X versions.
@TeiGekiLord when I had a Series X, I very quickly stopped using Quick Resume. Like you said, it regularly causes glitches. Also, if the game requires an online connection, when you resume it'll have lost connection while in sleep and just boot you back out to the title screen when you return anyway.
@Banjo- I'm glad I played DR back in it's heyday in that case! Strangely, I consider myself Resident Evil fan as I was there since day one on PS1 however I never played 4 which most people consider a highlight of the series - I didn't have a GameCube and never got one of the other versions until a few weeks ago when I started playing through the VR version on Quest. It feels wonderfully nostalgic despite having never played it. I like the newer first person ones too. I definitely need to check Fatal Frame - better late than never!
Well, let’s hope a lot more positive things are happening this year. Otherwise 2025 will be another lost year.
@16BitHero Every supporter of my favourite niche franchise is my friend! 😜
I played Dead Rising (Xbox One version) on Series X, it plays and looks wonderfully. I was Nintendo-only until Wii U, but I love Sega. I played Streets of Rage II on 3DS.
@Banjo- not such a niche game but I'm currently replaying Banjo Kazooie for the first time since I was in upper school (N64). It still has one of my top ten soundtracks of all time!
Removed - inappropriate
@Banjo- So you see how that looks and sounds, though? How knarled and twisted and warped that all sounds? It's not natural and neither was Sonic going to Nintendo. What a horrific day that was that's forever etched in my subconscious memory where it forces me to let it live rent free.
Y'all really don't know what's about to happen to the industry. How boring it's going to become. Do you know how your mom kept her sanity raising you your whole life? Her Soaps. That and whatever she could hear the next isle over in the grocery store. News media all know better. As Jack Tretton once said: "So my friends in the press industry tell me that NOTHING makes their editors day like controversy and bad news. To them I say, YOU'RE WELCOME!"
