So, Minecraft Legends is officially here, and while these days the franchise has a very specific audience, we're glad that Xbox continues to make good on its acquisition of Mojang/Minecraft. We got Minecraft Dungeons back in 2020 and now Legends this year, so Xbox is seemingly still interested in building out the IP.
However, some of us are not the biggest Minecraft fans in the world here at Pure Xbox (even if Legends is good fun), so this week's launch has mostly got us thinking about what other Xbox spin-offs we'd like to see in the coming years. Team green has a history of this sort of thing — from Halo Wars to Forza Horizon — and we reckon there's plenty of room yet for more spin-offs from Xbox Game Studios.
Gears of War is one of our favourite Xbox franchises, and while we did see Gears Tactics launch back in 2020, we still feel there's lots of potential for that series to grow. What about a DOOM-like Gears FPS? How about an open world RPG set on the planet of Sera? The series has established a pretty big world to explore since its first release back in 2006 - we'd like to see Xbox do some more Gears exploring!
That might be an even better idea considering how long it's taking for The Coalition to develop Gears 6. It's already been four years since Gears 5 and recent reports have suggested that Gears 6 only moved into full production pretty recently. These are just reports for now, but we've certainly seen no official evidence of a new mainline Gears game yet. Handing the IP over to another team to create a spin-off in the meantime could just work!
Now that Xbox has absorbed Bethesda there are even more options for spin-off material. Fallout is another series that comes to mind, especially with Bethesda Game Studios hard at work on Starfield (followed by, presumably, The Elder Scrolls 6). Fallout 1 & 2 never came to Xbox, so why not go back to that classic turn-based style for an upcoming spin-off? That's one way to tide the fans over until 'Fallout 5' anyhow.
As you may have seen from the lead image here, we can't bring this topic up without discussing Halo. Yes, it's had more spin-offs than most Xbox franchises when you count mobile entries and whatnot, but we still think Xbox could go deeper especially for console players. Halo Wars & Halo Wars 2 were a good start (we'd welcome a third one as well), but what about more FPS-focused affairs?
Halo 3: ODST has become a huge fan favourite over the years and we still think that sort of format would work really well for the series. A new idea, sure, but we'd definitely take a smaller bite-sized Halo experience to plug the gap after what's happened with Halo Infinite since launch. The rumoured 'Project Tatanka' could be just that, but either way, it's looking like we have a fairly long wait until the next mainline Halo game.
However, what do you think about all of this? We still potentially have all of the Activision Blizzard IP coming to Xbox soon as well, so there are lots of options out there for Team Xbox. Is there a specific franchise you'd like to see Xbox explore even more?
Do let us know, and in the meantime, we'll be dreaming about that Gears of War FPS!

No, I want to see more 3rd person single player campaign games like PlayStation has. More games like God of War and Ghost of Tsushima and Horizon.
I think yes and no.
Microsoft doesn't have that many diverse IPs (yet) to compete with Sony (for example).
And you have certain studios that seem to be stuck as the Halo or Gears studio.
So I'd love to see more creativity - whether through spin offs or new interesting IPs, either is fine. Maybe give them room for a new IP while someone else goes after a spin off?
I'd love Gears Tactics 2. Perhaps a Halo 3rd person game. But what I really want is a DLC for Halo Infinite to wrap up the ending properly.
Why dont you cooperate with Tomonobu Itagaki
I’d rather see them focus on get the games they advertised with the Series X out
Absolutely, they should do more spinoffs! It is a great way to explore new characters and storylines within a given universe, while also allowing for all new types of ways to play in those universes. Gear Tactics was so damn fun to play, I just wish they did more DLC with it. I'm hoping they keep with the "tactics" style and do a sequel Gears Tactics 2 as well as a new spinoff Halo Tactics, Doom Tactics, and how about a Evil Within Tactics where you kill nightmares???? I'm just saying, if I were in charge of Xbox game studios creative department, I'd have plenty of great ideas for spin-off games. I hope they try some out!
The nice thing about the tactics games is that they can be ported to mobile gaming too, which Xbox has a huge interest in. I know I'm just focusing on this set of potential spin-offs, but in no way saying that is all they are limited to. It's just an example that comes to mind of a very long tail on a successful IP to broaden its scope. There are countless other ways and games/stories they can do the same thing with, so yes please do more spin-offs.
We really just want a hell of a lot more games from Xbox studios. Time to open the floodgates and drop a LOT of GREAT content for all of us to play on Game Pass. LFG
Once abk gets done, I would revive starcraft ghost and warcraft adventures. Done by coalition and double fine, respectively.
Gears Tactics was actually pretty great. I had never played a game like that before, and without gamepass i probably never would have, but i actually enjoyed it alot
I would love another gears tactics. The gears franchise would also lend itself well to an rts style game, the books did a better job of framing the global aspect of the invasion instead of just where delta squad had battles.
I would love to see a Halo ODST 2.
Make it happen Microsoft.
They 100% need more spin-offs. There's so much lore with Halo it's easy to make something other than Master Chief Halo games. ODST and halo Wars was awesome.
@Alexface
Microsoft has way more diverse IPs than Sony. All of Sony's IPs are 3rd person action adventure games and one terrible driving sim. Microsoft ranges from Psychonauts 2, to Gears of War, to Forza Horizon, to Sea of Thieves to Grounded and many more
I'd take another Gears Tactics, I enjoyed both the gameplay and the story.
To be see when? In 2030?
I just want another Gears Tactics. The first game was phenomenal.
Lets go crazy:
Halo JRPG.
Gears of War Walking simulator (seriously).
Fallout Animal Crossing style life simulator game.
@somnambulance
Totally agree and in top end AAA condition showing us what the series x can do.
Their studios seem to spread as it is for some reason, maybe having like single player campaign and co op and multiplayer all for.
Series s and x and pc and cloud devices is far to much.
@Sebatrox
A crash team racing game made by Turn 10 and it's open world would be awesome and set it apart from Mario Kart
I want an XSeX version/updated Steel Battalion Ultimate Controller (w/foot pedals) and game!
Don't they need tentnpole franchises that are successful before we can talk about niche spinoffs?!
@Tharsman Halo JRPG...LOL, that would be hilarious. Though then Cortana would be censored as too risque, while she's fine while realistic.
Although, isn't Halo already a genre Square considers an RPG? Add some numbers popping up and it's golden as it is.
@NEStalgia if Yakuza/Like A Dragon could pull off a JRPG turn based combat system, so can Halo!
And why must you remind me Final Fantasy is no longer an RPG?
Obviously it depends on whatever measures are implemented to ensure quality, but I'd like to see an Xbox IP licensing system for indie studios — at least for dormant or inactive IP.
@Tharsman But FF is an RPG, they're just going to show us all those RPG aspects "later". By the standards they've showed so far, CoD counts as an RPG too...
I'm waiting for GTA6 and hoping it's a space flight simulator.
@NarutosBiggestFan Me too but without half the game being cinematic.
Why can’t they make full games
I think at this point people just want Microsoft exclusive games that make you go this is why I spent £450 on a next gen console.
I’m really tempted to trade my series x in and settle for a series s.
I don’t think I would miss my series x in the slightest.
Which is sad as Xbox has always been number 1 for me.
Halo universe is ripe for spin offs and I thoroughly enjoyed ODST and reach. In fact I enjoyed all the bungie halo games. But with 343’s track record I’m not getting my hopes up.
@ZuneTattooGuy
So what I mean by IP is more about series - so yes there are games like psychonauts and grounded which are great but they are only one (2 with a huge gap for psychonauts). Big big IPs for Microsoft at the moment are really just Forza, gears, halo... Maybe fable at a push but we haven't had that for years.
I've been dreaming about a State of Decay visual novel.
make NEW AND ORIGINAL games for the series X only that are MP/SP like the classic halo and gears games. where seriously lacking games like that nowadays that has a campaign as equally important as the MP, and has co-op in it. Gears and Halo are so special but handled so wrong. both franchises are steered in the wrong direction. granted they're both being milked since after reach and gears 3
so thats why i say make new and original MP=SP IPs please. thats what ive always known xbox for was the machine that adds great multiplayer to a great single player, that was encouraged to play with others. thats all possible with spin-offs , even tho its not entirely new and original i guess....BUT WERE DESPERATE
Easy … third person. StarCraft game … a bad boys game …. A def jam fighting game but Roc nation … a spawn and blade exclusive too
@Alexface
Ok, Xbox still has a more diverse collection of studios and games than Sony. Nothing against Drakes Fortune but they all start to feel the same after a while. After the success of The Last of Us every major game from Sony became a 3rd person action adventure title. Even games that had a unique identity (like God of War) got boiled down and simplified into Last of Us Nordic edition
Just make something, anything, just any new content for the new consoles that actually is complete on day one. Then actually release it when you say your going to release it.
@Dezzy70 To date, I’m sort of wondering if I bought my flashy next gen Xbox simply for Vampire Survivors and for my son to play Minecraft. Not saying that’s bad! Just saying I feel like I’ve been waiting for a big game for a while on Xbox. Infinite doesn’t count for me because I had almost beaten the campaign by the time my console arrived!
@somnambulance
Redfall is only a couple of weeks away
How about we just get some games out before we start worrying about spin offs.
I want to see more smaller games, spin-offs sure. Gears Tactics is cool to see. Minecraft Legends being a strategy game with a different spin then well being a Age of Empires with Minecraft I'm glad it has a different spin on things as a third person walking around and commanding (like you'd see with tactical shooters I guess) approach then isometric/top down/god view. Halo Wars was fine but limited and I didn't play 2 so no idea how it differs. Pentiment also was cool.
I wouldn't say no to more games that are smaller, getting ideas out, doing something different to breath some air on something different the studios have in mind then just the big stuff as while the big stuff is great but takes a while, bigger expectations as well, sometimes eh I don't find myself playing any of them because they don't interest me but that's on me not everyone else wanting bigger games.
Small games allow quicker releases to fill out the schedule more, while also letting the creative juices flow but the thing is they work for Gamepass as most people wouldn't play them otherwise besides a small audience anyway.
I don't care for PlayStation's current direction, the budget and quality may be there but the gameplay is what stops me caring as well as them being cinematic which I also don't care about. I want to play games not movies, hence I play their gamey games out of their first parties and these days their console is more a Japanese/AA western third party machine to me so I don't care for their current output and instead I just pick up PS1-3/PSP/Vita games instead. With open worlds and well Last of Us (even if third person horror survival)/God of War being similar feel somewhat and I'd rather play other hack n slashes over God of War personally. I didn't care for Ryse Son of Rome doing the camera and combat the way it did, nor Hellblade which seems similar (I enjoyed past Ninja Theory games) so I don't care for the camera/combat/game design in God of War 2018 and Ragnaork either (2018 made we so bored I wanted it over with and nothing beats poking the Water God's eyes out and climbing Titans I'm sorry but nothing will nothing in 2018/Ragnarok comes close to that scale an opening level). I only care about the Astro's, Dreams, Gravity Rush, Knack and such, and Ratchet/Gran Turismo annoyed me with their worse and worse releases in my opinion, I just can't get into them.
I liked the variety Sony had before in prior gens (their strategy works so they will keep doing it but it doesn't work for me personally) it's why I go to Nintendo now (not saying their business practices are great either but they offer games I want to play) is the variety in gameplay/genres and the controller features. Xbox does variety but it doesn't really do much for me either but I do applaud them for trying at least with existing IPs to do something different while also having the usual IPs and genre gaps covered Bethesda or other studios.
Hi Fi Rush is cool for sure though. Minecraft Legends is a fair spin I think, more exciting then Dungeons was.
I've mostly been playing third parties or well 360/certain Xbox One games on my Xbox One X like Dante's Inferno, Brutal Legend, Ride 2, Demon Turf recently as I bought them for cheap so uh I haven't really bothered with first party in a while because I don't really care for most of them other than Forza Motorsport (which as it's ups and downs) or Psychonauts currently if were talking like the more current gen releases.
@ZuneTattooGuy I know and I can’t wait! I’m curious to see how it is. I was really disinterested in the game til the showcase in January, which made me really excited for the game. The gameplay since has been iffy, but, man, I’m holding out hope. I really like when Xbox games feel like “Xbox games” if you know what I mean. This could be it!
@ZuneTattooGuy this needed to be said about GoW; absolutely hate what they did to it instead of just making a new IP or at the very least a spin-off with an entirely different character. This new GoW is not GoW and just proved how complacent and stale Sony's gotten. All of their games are re-used templates with re-used ''gameplay'', serious and boring.
people say sony has the games, but are they really games or just interactive movies serving as a gateway to a netflix show or movie? Xbox just needs to invest and actually care about what they have.
Mech Assault: Steel Battalion
I wanna see a Halo Spartan Assault made for console instead of for mobile then ported over as an afterthought. Fun game but limited by nature.
I'm still surprised that they haven't made, or at least announced, a Wolfenstein 3D remaking like DOOM 1993 & Quake got. Not quite a spin-off but another smaller scale game.
Fallout 1 & 2 remasters would also be cool, but I'd also be interested in seeing them swing at making full remakes with open world. Just... more Fallout NV & 3 than 4.
Iron Brigade was a classic XBLA game, that getting a sequel would be really cool.
Wish bigger companies would be more willing to do more smaller, budget releases. Outside of Kirby Nintendo only really does mobile games, and lmao Sony doesn't make games period. Feels like the days of Microsoft Publishing a bunch of solid to good games via Xbox Live Arcade are long gone. And even then, we can't even enjoy all those games they did help with via backwards compatibility or Game Pass.
@NarutosBiggestFan that to me is Xbox’s biggest void, throw in Platformer’s also, i mean give us a Banjo Reboot already and more games like HellBlade 2 and such. PlayStation kills it with their single player games. Hell they are known for them. People buy a PS just for them, so MS can’t really say it’s a stale genre and ignore it.
@ZuneTattooGuy the Last of Us and God of War are 90+ meta games, even Ratchet and Clank is top notch. Sony has more longer lasting big franchises than Xbox. Xbox couldn’t even get Halo right coming off a console that almost kill the brand and Halo 5 was heavily disliked and Infinite happened, hey i love the Xbox as much as the next guy but Sony has the better games since PS4. I will give you GT7 isn’t what Forza will be. Forza is the best ran franchise on the Xbox. It never fails to be impressive, but Sony IP’s at the moment light up the Meta scores and sell boat lots of consoles, nothing on Xbox right now is seen as a sure fire hit. Hope that changes, Xbox deserves better first party.
@TheGrizMan you already know 2030 is reserved for Starfield, quit playing HHAHA sorry had to say it. (Bad Joke)
@NEStalgia Don't they need tentnpole franchises that are successful before we can talk about niche spinoffs?!
Bingo, yes they do.
MS has a ton of potential with their hardware and expanded IPs but they always seem hellbent on squandering that opportunity.
Let’s start with adding Diablo 4 to Game Pass ASAP! And yeah, I know there have been “curveballs” lol.
@Green-Bandit
Please tell me what big exclusive does Sony have in the next 90 days?
@ZuneTattooGuy Final Fantasy 16?
Nah, I would like to just see more games from Xbox game studios.
@ZuneTattooGuy None I believe. Just Spider Man coming out in the Fall.
@Green-Bandit Agreed. My whole life i was a Xbox fanboy and didnt like Playstation... But i just got sick of waiting so i got myself a PS5 and have been having a blast playing all the single player games. So much fun!
@Green-Bandit
Can't wait for the random fight system like 15 again, also Square couldn't pull a solid game out their cheeks even if they tried
@NarutosBiggestFan
Which Single Player games in particular?
@theduckofdeath
Yep, with full controller. I commented this yesterday.
@ZuneTattooGuy i am not a Final Fantasy fan myself sir but i am sure it will gain lots of good scores and sell well. The last FF game i played was on PS2. Can’t even remember if i enjoyed that or not, guessing not much Haha.
@NarutosBiggestFan i have always owned all 3 consoles and never been a fanboy but had my favorites of course and 360 was my favorite system ever. I only played my PS3 for exclusives. Then came the PS4 and i just didn’t care much for the controller so again i played the exclusives and my daily driver was the Xbox One and later One X. But PS5 while not having my favorite controller, it works and it’s the best sony has had, i even picked up the Edge along with @Nestalgia and haven’t used it much. While me and Nes would like to see Sony do some changes (tension key) to it , it’s really pretty good and that leads me to this, Xbox needs to set it up in new fresh idea’s for IP’s before i turn Series X from my daily driver to a show car i drive on Sundays. Cause PS5 has games coming and wether we all agree on how much we like them or not, the fact is gamers do, since Sony has figured out the shortage, they are outselling Xbox 3-1 again like last gen, the gap has ballooned to 15 million units and they just sold like 800K units in the month of March. So gamers still care about IP’s and faith a console will provide and MS has done very little 2.5 years in Series X/S, i hate to be that guy cause i love my X, but come on MS, giving us Bethesda and ABK games on GP is not creating new and exciting games and IP’s and letting Halo slip out the door half dressed was a bad look. Forza is the only game i can bet money on that it will be polished, fun and supported out the gate from MS, thats not enough. Sorry for the Rant, but i am glad to see you find a console that can provide you some fun and not just sit around and hope and wait, i am also happy that you looked past being a fanboy and seen the light that all consoles and games are and can be fun. Bet you you will own a PS6 and maybe a Xbox next Gen. Thats growth to the industry and thats a great thing 😀
@Green-Bandit I will say that the Edge feels like a controller designed for GT7....it really is amazing feeling for that game, and the tension is right for it as is the stick position. I swear all the "pro" gamers they interviewed that told them what to make for their pro controller were all from the GT7 championship. Guaranteed. They surely were not shooter players.
Seriously, how hard can it be to make low tension stick modules for the modular stick system. It's just a different spring! It's 2023, Sony!
@NEStalgia i am with you there, no reason not to have a Tension tool in a $200 dollar controller. I will say something positive about the Edge tho and thats that i feel like it’s premium build for what they built. Meaning yes there are things i wish were different but for what they built it is made nicely. Now i still want different stick options, concave option would let my thumbs fit into the sticks and not slip off. I feel like the trigger stops could have gotten it closer to a mouse click, the shortest pull still feels a little long for shooters. Scuf is really leading in trigger stops, even better than the Elite series. I do however like the flat buttons vs Xbox’s rounded, somehow rounded feels cheaper quality to me. I suppose we have gone over all this, but i enjoy controller talk with you, many gamers just don’t seem to care enough about that topic and i find when a new generation starts the thing i am most excited to see is the controller. Especially for Sony cause i have disliked their controllers for so long. If PS6 comes out and refines the DS, they could have a winner on hands. Xbox controller is mostly good to great, but it is showing some age and i don’t love that they shrunk it in size. The One controller was PERFECT fit for me hands. Maybe after 3 hours it felt a touch big, but it was insanely perfect, not in love with the reduction in size for X/S , throw in i think they need quality of life upgrades to it. Better buttons and less noises overall would be a start.
@Green-Bandit Technically X/S isn't smaller, they removed some material to recontour it, giving it reduced mass on the grip and shoulders, but it's actually still the same overall profile.
Yeah, Edge really does FEEL spectacular. Tension aside. And stick position aside. DS6 won't refine it much because the overall fan base loves the profile how it is, they can't really risk much change on it. XB, yeah, button improvements, rubber grip standard would be nice to see. Really it needs freaking gyros. It's kind of pathetic they haven't added them this gen.
@NEStalgia makes sense, in my hand it for sure feels slightly smaller. But i prefer the feel in hand of the Xbox One controller. Well i agree and disagree, Sony from gen to gen has taken big risks to the controllers and not giving fans thoughts much into consideration. PS4-PS5 being the most radical change, but i could see the PS6 launching with a slightly smaller, thinner DS since the tech will shrink in size and cost. Both of which i think Sony would prefer to take advantage of. Time will tell, but i would like it to shave off some size, not much but a little would help me play without discomfort that from time to time I experience on the DS.
@Green-Bandit True, they can cut the battery size in half or less and use all that extra space...
@NEStalgia HAHA, I’d say don’t give them any idea’s but following the battery life cut in the Edge, I’d say anything is possible. Don’t matter to them they will just sell a billion units as always. Then Cry that without COD they will disappear.
@Green-Bandit It'll be ok, the ds6 will feature PS InstantReact(tm) for instantaneous response time and all day power (it's a USB cable )
a true Halo RPG shooter, with a party. Mass Effectish
@NEStalgia HAHA sounds about right. Don’t forgot the hot and cold thing, playing a game next to lava or ice ought to drain the battery in 6 mins.
@Green-Bandit 😂. If ps controllers need one thing to solve the battery problem resistive heaters and refrigeration was not it lol
@Green-Bandit This was very well written. I enjoyed reading this and agree with you. I am very much enjoying my time with my PlayStation but I mostly use it for console exclusives. I want to continue to grow my Gamerscore on Xbox, so all games make multi-platform will be played on Xbox Series X.
@ZuneTattooGuy Horizon Zero Dawn, Horizon Forbidden West, God of War, God of War Ragnarok, Spiderman, Ghost of Tsushima (currently playing), Detroit, Strayed, The Last of Us.
@NarutosBiggestFan yeah buddy thats a good plan. Thats what i do also, use PS and Nintendo as an exclusive machine and Xbox as my daily driver. That way i miss nothing. But i still prefer to hold the xbox controller for longer game sessions. Dual sense is a little big and starts to hurt my hands for some reason. But i am excited to see you step out of your confront zone and try other games and consoles. Many don’t do that and they don’t know what fun they could be missing, and if they don’t like the console it’s not like they can’t sell it for close to what they paid. Overall i can’t wait to see what Sony and MS have in store for the June events coming up. Xbox needs to start flexing those big games they have studios working on and once they get the ABK deal done i want to see them buy someone else and continue to have loads of Dev’s on hand to get rid of these droughts they go through. Thanks for the reply friend, happy to chat with you anytime. 😀
@NarutosBiggestFan
Fun a bunch of third person action adventure games. My point exactly
How about any games at all from any of the Xbox studios Microsoft has. Anything…anyone…no…Just me? I’m loving Hi-Fi Rush and the Forza Horizon expansions. But what are all those studios Microsoft purchased actually doing? Hellblade 2? Fable? Anything at all new. I really love Game Pass and the Series x. But it’s time to start making some games and actually putting them out. Now we have rumors of half step consoles, when there hasn’t been a game yet that feels like it’s actually pushed these consoles. Gaming is in a strange place. I still love it. But i find myself shaking my head a lot these days.
@ZuneTattooGuy Yup, the best games out there. I really only play these types of games. I hate online multiplayer games because i am not good at them and even games that have a single player mode, most of the achievements are for the online mode which i wont play so i will never be able to 100% the game.
