Late last year, Microsoft revealed a "new dawn" for its legendary Halo series - with 343 Industries also rebranding to 'Halo Studios' in the process. While we've not heard much about the franchise's next entry since this announcement, the Xbox developer is indeed hiring for this new project - and it's asking aspiring workers to be "part of something legendary" at the Microsoft studio.
So, the question we're posing is, do you think Xbox has what it takes to bring Halo back to the top? In asking that, we're by no means slating the series' last game (we actually really like Halo Infinite to this day), but to call it legendary would probably be a bit of a stretch. That's a term that's not been thrown at Halo since its glory days on OG Xbox & Xbox 360.
For what it's worth, I personally think a major reboot was the right call. While 343 (now Halo Studios) absolutely nailed the gameplay in Infinite, the whole setup — story and all — did feel somewhat directionless. Add to that the fact that creating a sequel to something 'infinite' isn't exactly easy - I reckon this whole starting-fresh approach is probably the right one for Xbox.
I'm also quite intrigued about that switch to a completely different game engine for future titles. Halo has a very unique feel that I'm hoping can be accurately recreated in Unreal Engine - in fact, here's hoping it can be evolved and improved using the Epic Games' technology. The jury's still out on that of course, but hopefully with the right resources behind it, Halo Studios can indeed create something legendary on this new tech.
There's also the question of, well, what Halo game will we get next? As the related article above points out, this whole re-do has led to multiple 'projects' being in the works at the Xbox studio - with a Halo: Combat Evolved remake also being rumoured in recent months as well. While that's by no means confirmed yet, something along those lines would surely be 'legendary' - although that's sort of cheating given we already know how good the first Halo is!
Anyway, regardless of what specific Halo project comes out of Microsoft next, do you think it will reach "legendary" status? Talk to us about that prospect down below - and for a bit of fun, how about predicting the game's aggregate review score in the poll underneath.

Hello there fellow gamers.
Having finally played all the mainline Halo games when I got my Series X, back in 2022 (yes, I skipped them during OG and Xbox 360 days), I would love if the next entry in this great franchise is indeed "Leng........ Wait for it....... Dary". Couldn´t help it 😜
It is not been easy for former 343 now Halo Studio to make an impact, even though Halo Infinite was a step in the right direction.
Hopefuly they can nail it completely in the next one and bring back, at least some of the originals magic. We´ll see.
Cheers everyone and happy gaming
Tbh I laughed when I seen the headline!
I would love it but I wouldn't bet on it I'd more that likely it will be just as meh as infinite I hope I'm wrong though 🤪
Personally, I really loved the campaign in Infinite. I have soloed every single game on Legendary, and am still miffed that only one of them had a Solo Legendary achievement. I mean, come on! Beating it on Legendary in co-op is easy by comparison, so why the rest don't have it is beyond me (and similarly, why Gears of War doesn't have an achievement for beating the games solo on Insane or Inconceivable is also infuriating. I've beaten every game solo on these difficulties, and having two of you blasting away just makes the games a cakewalk by comparison).
Seem to have gone off on a tangent there. Apologies! 😂
Anyway, I'm happy with the direction that Infinite took, particularly when you consider what was, in my opinion, a misstep in 5. I think the biggest problem that Infinite had was being pushed out of the door half-baked. Just releasing the campaign was a mistake. Microsoft should have just bitten the bullet (or laser?), waited a few months, and then released a complete game. It would have been received far better that way, and likely reviewed better too. Personally, I only play the campaign* anyway, so it kind of suited me, but I can still see that it was a mistake.
*I used to play the multiplayer in I think 3, but I got fed up with being kicked from team deathmatch games where I would throw a grenade into a room filled with enemies, only for one of my team to then run into the room, die in the subsequent explosion, and then kick me! I mean, was that really my fault...? I'm not bitter! You're bitter... 🤣
I really liked Infinite. In fact I thought it was perfect for story expansions and the like. Certainly something ODST-based at least. I was hoping they'd have made some ODST content and allowed for three player PvE content and raid-like bits and pieces. Sadly that didn't come to pass.
I reckon the next Halo will be special. They seem to be on to something with Infinite IMO. I just hope it's not a reboot.
The gun play and hook ability in Halo Infinite single player campaign for me was perfect.
It was just the game looked like a little upgrade graphics wise and open world wise like a very good Xbox 360 game. Only really one biome, hardly any weather effects and not enough to do.
Gameplay fantastic, world and graphics not great.
But the concept was there and developed by the right team could have Halos answer to Nintendos with Zelda and BOTW, of course with lots of differences but you get the idea.
And really after 6 years of development really should have been Halo BOTW.
The big difference, Nintendo basically developed a single player only game for one console really.
343i, single player, multiplayer and how many dam consoles and PCs and clouds.
I said when Halo infinite released and my comments have stood the test of time.
Xbox studios will never make a massive killer app like Sony or Nintendo because they are not focused on just one console and until recently just single play campaign.
Now Xbox studios have started focusing on just single player games like Indy and Avowed things have got better.
Game development is no rocket science even though some on here would you believe that.
It’s about one single goal which helps, project management.
Halo infinite is the best of the franchise. I am looking forward to whatever is next, hopefully it will be another step up.
@OldGamer999 I feel the same way, the gunplay in Halo is practically unsurpassed at this point, only Doom is competitive and evolving in that respect. The grappling hook was a simple but excellent mechanic. The AI on harder difficulties is still a million years ahead of COD for example. The story and environments have just been a bit stagnant for too long. There is so much potential in this franchise still. Maybe an ODST style spinoff would freshen things up again. It's always going to be multiplatform and have multiplayer but a special focus on solo campaign innovation would make Halo exciting again.
Halo Infinite was excellent at it's core, but it lacked any variation at all (both in environments and gameplay.)
All I'd hope for the new one is greater mission variety. One of the (if not the) best FPS campaigns is Titanfall 2, because every mission had you doing something unique and didn't overstay it's welcome. If halo can capture some of that magic, along with it's usual excellent characters and music, I'd be set.
In my opinion, Halo is super bland with no marketing flavour/hype these days, I think they shouldn't bother but on that note I voted for 50-60.
@Dalamar73 You said everything I feel. I'd love to BELIEVE but I think Halo's best days are past. But I will keep my fingers firmly crossed.
@Dalamar73 Objectively, that is an incorrect use of the word "objectively."
@BacklogBrad Say WHAT? You are of course entitled to your opinion, but you are also the first person i've heard say Halo Infinite was the best Halo. Bold take.
@Fiendish-Beaver Glad you enjoyed it that much. Personally I felt very mixed about Infinite. The gunplay was fantastic, and the grapple felt great. But what was the point of going open-world when the world was so dull and empty. The same biome everywhere, almost no incentive to explore.
Additionally I thought the game lost too much going open world. I've always loved Halo's set-pieces like turning a corner to see a whole battle going on as two scarab tanks drop from the skies and you have to figure out how you are going to take them down. Those are epic memorable moments I will never forget. By comparison Infinite was pretty dull more like Far Cry outposts.
And don't get me started about being locked in a narrow room with an Elite with a Hammer. Not fun, neither was the final room/boss. Also didn't love the story or many of the characters, it all basically seemed like a contrived plot just to retcon 4-5 and reboot Cortana. All in all a very mixed bag imo. Not bad, but not great either. Far from Halo's best.
It will be pretty great i think. Microsoft will bend over backwards to impress the Playstation audience, so it will probably be better than halo has been in a long time...
High hopes, but if Microsoft can be trusted to do anything, it's fumble the ball with Halo.
Such a shame, at least a new game should bring it out of its current life support status.
I would love to see Halo get back to being undisputedly amazing.
I appreciate a lot of people enjoyed it, but I really did not think Infinite was good at all. Gun play and movement was excellent as always, but every other metric failed for me and this was a big disappointment. I'm concerned they have effectively left it with the same devs and can only hope the internal restructures they have made will help propel the next title to the top of the pile, where it deserves to be.
I remember dying so many times to that first boss with the hammer when I played it solo on Legendary, @themightyant. No upgrades at all, and just constantly running around and chipping away at his health, only to die whenever you felt you just might manage it. Brutal...! 🤣
@Fiendish-Beaver Yep. Brutal, but also just not fun. I don't know who thought it was a good idea and how it got signed off. But it wasn't the only bad boss fight like this with BS "you require some luck... or cheese" mechanics. Halo: Infinite is the only Halo I haven't played more than once for this and other reasons.
343 halos are trash. even if infinite is a step in the right direction, that’s only in comparison to 343 previous games. infinite is boring
@Dalamar73 reach is better than infinite
Ditching 343i for "the new developer" step in right direction.
Lot that 343i staff were terrible stewards for future of Halo. 343i have treated Halo fans like garbage for many years.
The way the moderators treated people in Waypoint Forum was terrible. They let their friends insult people and break the rules with zero repercussions. But if anyone questioned that, all were immediately banned. Snickerdoodle was the ABSOLUTE worst in this behavior.
And 343i gave her a promotion. Go figure, right.
@Fiendish-Beaver Not calling you out at all. You are one of the people I always enjoy reading posts from.
But if have finished any campaign on X difficulty, who cares if an achievement is involved. Knowing did so, should be only reward needed. Unless a person wants to just simply be a bragger.
Full disclosure, I've always hated achievements. Ruins sooooooo many online games. So my opinion means absolutely nothing really.
I don't chase achievements as such, @GuyinPA75, but I just think I do like a proper challenge, and just feel that when something is particularly difficult that doing it solo should receive separate recognition to doing it in co-op, which is always that bit easier (except in Halo 2 where on co-op Legendary if one of you die, you both have to restart, which is a real ball-ache!).
It's not that I like to brag, and in all honesty, no one sees what I get up to but me (which is probably for the best! 😂). It's just for my internal boast where I can look at my achievement and know that just 0.001% of people have achieved that particular goal. When it is an achievement that can be done in co-op, I'm left wondering whether the 0.0001% of people that have earned that achievement did so in co-op, or solo. I'd just prefer that it is broken down so that I can have that bit of pride in having achieved it solo.
So it's not a case of boasting, as such, but about having that bit of pride in the accomplishment, that I basically never tell anyone anyway! So whilst I never really mention them to anyone, I do like it when I've had to work hard at something, on my own, and I'm mostly talking about difficulty achievements here, not ones for collecting 3 million documents or the like. Something that really challenges you. I like to think that the developers set these really hard challenges for you, and then I get a little buzz when I conquer that challenge (like having completed Divinity Original Sin 2 in Honour mode for example, which I did solo. I'd just prefer that there was some recognition for having done it on my own, and not in 4 player co-op!).
And yes, I know it's petty, but it's just for my internal pride, that's all... 😉
I've completed Infinite 4 times, @themightyant. I did so solo on Hardcore(?), and then immediately after on Legendary, when it first came out, and then last year my mate had back surgery, and we did every single Halo FPS game on Normal, and then straight through the lot of them again on Legendary. My mate hadn't played any Halo game before last year, and we started with Infinite, and throughout he kept asking me this or that was happening, and, because I have a memory like a sieve, I was often unable to answer him, so we started right at the beginning, and played through the whole lot so that he could understand the story. The only one we didn't do in co-op Legendary was Halo 2 and that was because my mate is not the most patient of people, and got mightily miffed at having to restart all the time when one of us died (usually me!). 😂
@Fiendish-Beaver Definitely nothing wrong with internal prids. If were doing to brag, I was going poop on you for sure lol
This never happened to me on Xbox luckily, but you ever trying for something or such just about complete it and the console freezes up?
On the NES, think was first ninja gaiden. Finally made it thru difficult level and right at end of it. Console froze. I was beyond angry.
I have definitely missed the occasional achievement when it glitches like that, @GuyinPA75. As I say, I don't really bother actively trying to get achievements. If they pop, the pop. However, I certainly have some pride when I get the truly challenging ones. All I need then is to have someone that gives a damn that I can boast too... 🤣
I think the next Halo is the last really good shot the franchise at having a future. They have to get it right or 343 needs to go another direction.
I'm pressing X for doubt.
Give the series back to Bungie lol
I'm a Halo diehard and put hundreds of hours into Infinite but they really dropped the ball at launch AND then decided not to put campaign DLC with that cliff hanger ending. Campaign was good on Infinite and I want more. Hope the switch to UE5 helps them focus on the story and that they move in the direction of Cortana not dominating as the villain any longer (which is what Infinite set the series up for)
