A year ago next month, Microsoft first started talking about its next-gen Xbox - a console that's supposedly going to provide the "largest technical leap" ever seen from generation to generation. The thing is though, we still don't really know what that means, even if Xbox fans have pondered the topic for months now. So, do you think Xbox will stop us guessing and tell us a bit more about the system in 2025?
As we covered in our huge "next Xbox console" guide, we think a 2025 release for the console is very unlikely, but what about a reveal this year? For Microsoft's last flagship console — Xbox Series X — we got a reveal right at the tail end of 2019 at The Game Awards, with a release coming the following year. And, with some rumours suggesting a 2026 release is possible, there's a chance that by this time next year we might know all the deets on Xbox's new console.
To be honest, we'd love to see that happen. With PS5 Pro now out in the wild and Switch 2 announced and set to be fully unveiled in April, we're feeling a little left out over here. We're hoping that the wait for new Xbox hardware will make it feel even more special when it arrives, but we'd still like to know more about the system ASAP. Microsoft, what do you mean by the largest technical leap ever?
Of course, there's also Xbox's upcoming handheld system - confirmed by Phil Spencer to be in the works over at Microsoft. But, the boss told us to not expect it for a while yet, and certain rumours have suggested the team's main home console may come first anyway. We'd be well happy with a late 2025 reveal followed by a 2026 launch, if you want to treat us early over there at Xbox HQ!
So, do you think Xbox will fully reveal its next-gen console this year? Or will we be waiting a while yet? Vote in the poll down below and feel free to elaborate on your pick in the comments underneath.

Nah, they’ll heavily tease it only to try reassuring people they’re not leaving the console market while porting every game that Xbox has ever done to PS5 and Switch 2.
I think it's too soon for next gen.
I think the handheld will be out 2026 and next gen console 2027 if we are lucky.
They REALLY shouldn't. Microsoft needs to establish WHY anyone should buy their next machine, especially since people aren't buying their current ones.
On a related note, this might be the first generation ever where the full capabilities of the current machines are never reached before the generation ends. Its weird...
That would be a massive d***-punch for this gen.
In order for it to be a bigger technological leap over what is currently on the market it would have to be considerably more powerful than the PS5 Pro and I can't see that happening at an affordable price not any time soon anyway. Making that kind of claim is pure hyperbole though as there have been some pretty huge leaps in technology from generations to generation and that gap is getting smaller and smaller each time. So they have dug a hole with that claim as it is.
The very fact that you simply want new hardware just because others have released or announced it says more about you expecting them to feel obligated to release things on others schedules than their own. That why Nintendo does things when they want and not what others in the market are doing.
I’m fascinated to see what they do next. I have Xbox and PlayStation but can not for the life of me understand what Microsoft are trying to achieve.
If someone had set out to destroy third party sales on their own store, reduce sales of their own consoles and erode the c30M customers signed up to Gamepass then I can’t imagine a better strategy than the one they’ve been employing in the past 12 months.
2 months ago I'd say no, they wait until 2027. But with the low stock thing in UK and Europe, and GTA6 on the Horizon, I think they're gearing up for something big this year
There’s rumors that it’ll actually release in 2026. If those are true, we might hear something before the end of the year.
It's sad to think this gen might end without never really starting.
A console upgrade is a hard sell when your current marketing is "You don't need to buy our games OR our hardware!"
@armondo36 On Xbox side, can fully put that issue on Series S.
When being forced continually develope for the LOWEST common denominator, that console or possibly even THAT generation will NEVER reach full potential.
@IOI so true.

They have not been debunked, @Rog-X. Read what they said! They did not say we did not consider closing Xbox they pointed out that they said they were all in on gaming. Both can be true at the same time. Indeed, read the article that this was mentioned in earlier today, and you will see some interesting responses and an article that is worth taking a look at.
Anyway, you can consider closing, and then decide to go all in. It's as simple as that. They have not explicitly said that they did not consider closing at all, so in no way has this been debunked....
We talk about next gen when previous is more used than current gen
If they release next gen they will support 3 generations? I don't mind it, I m looking forward for portable, but maybe i will take first the new nintendo
Hopefully not. Nothing would scream 'we've completely given up on XSX' more than going into detail about the successor less than 5 years after the launch. Keep the reveal and details for 2026, if that is to be the release year. Sega killed the Saturn by talking up the Dreamcast too early; either learn from the mistakes of the past or be doomed to repeat them.
If I were to bet–I'd say we see an "X-Deck" style portable device this year, but not a truly next-gen console.
I think they continue to allude to next gen being next year but we don't get it revealed until 26.
@Rog-X And you’re choosing to believe Microsoft words? Lmao I’m not going to repeat their lies but Phil Spencer in a rare moment of honesty clearly said there’s no “red lines” as to what will end up launching on competing consoles, I’m choosing to believe that.
Plus the leaker that claimed Halo MCC is coming to Switch 2 and PS5 just accurately predicted the reveal date for the system so at this point he has more credibility that Microsoft’s PR 🤣
No need for it really it wouldn't be a decent enough jump what would we get slightly better resolution and fps??
No enough for me I still think my series x is an absolute beast of a machine just look a the Indiana Jones game we are ok for a couple more years!!
No, drip fed leaks, like Chinese whispers.
I think they'll show something by the end of this year and release it next year.
Let's spin the roulette of generic comments of trolls today...here are the options "windows phone", "Phil's lies", "lack of exclusives", "Xbox will die". Every article on this site now we get at least one of those.
Here we are talking about next gen consoles and it barely feels as if this one even started.
I don’t see Microsoft announcing a next-gen Xbox console this year as I can’t see Sony announcing and releasing the PS6 anytime soon when they’ve only just released the PS5 Pro. I think we’ll hear more about the next-gen consoles sometime in 2026 with a release in 2027.
I sincerely hope they won't! Perhaps late 2026 early 2027, like others have said this gen feels like it barely started, at least from XGS.
I think a new console could do well, if it is marketed right and has a good price point. I guess I am more one of the silent majority though who is a bit more positive than the vocal minority online.
Definitely a late 2025 announcement and a release in November 2026. 100%.
For those not in the know, the OG Xbox launched Nov 2001.
They will no way wanna miss the 25th anniversary. Guarantee it.
I’m good with a 2026 holiday release, that would be a 6 year console cycle, only one year shorter than PS4 and Xbox One. So i say bring it on. Announce it in early 2026 and have it hit in time for the holiday’s. Looking forward to learning more on it.
Multiple new leaks are no 2026 isn't happening.
Sony is ahead of design and Microsoft hasn't committed to hardware design.
Unless these new leaks are planted by Microsoft to throw everyone off from their true plans of course.
Release killer games this gen first please. Indy is a good start and I’m confident that DOOM will be great. But seems crazy to think next gen where we haven’t had a single Gears game and most big releases like Halo Infinite and Starfield were disappointing.
2025 will be to early. Many are not focused on the switch 2. Let that go first and build on that hype. Support the device with many games yo build trust with the nintendo fans. Then reveal a new device in 2026.
Nothing has even came out for this console generation, nothing of substance exclusive wise anyway, they need to make consoles worth it and stop scamming people with lies which this generation has been built on.
A new console for Xbox at the moment makes no sense when they're seemingly putting more and more of its games elsewhere and this "everything is an Xbox" model, coupled with their current consoles sales on a constant downward trajectory.
Then you have to look at cost, all the current consoles cost more today then at launch, whilst the Pro is pretty expensive, so how much would this be?
@GuyinPA75 most games nowadays don’t release at 60fps in quality mode and thats nothing to do with the series s. Third party games are optimised for devices like the steam deck fine and that’s not a powerful as the S.
Its not the series S’s fault is just a cheap copout for devs who didn’t put enough time into optimising their games for the devices they release on. Most games nowadays require a ton of patches just to get into a state they should’ve been at launch. The industry (most likely the suits in charge) have gotten sloppy and don’t mind releasing semi-broken games.
I'm optimistic about next generation xbox, but based solely on hearsay, connected dots, and gut feeling lol.
That said I strongly feel like the next generation will erase the divide between pc and console gaming, and that microsoft will have it running on an optimized version of windows and capable of running pc games plus all of our backlog xbox library. In doing this they'll also open up the console to 3rd party storefronts, steam, gog, epic, etc, which will both give current xbox owners added incentive to upgrade, plus entice new customers into the fold with the allure of best of both worlds.
The series x/s gen was already a small step towards bringing consoles into more of a pc format, and normalizing the spec differences to console. And their strategy of releasing all games to different platforms/already release everything to pc anyways means they can open up to 3rd party storefronts and still count on profits from software no matter what
