So, here we are. Nine months into a year that's absolutely flown by, and we've seen some fantastic Xbox games in that time. There's a lot more to come as well, of course, so this feels like a good interim point to reminisce.
It's been so long that we actually forgot about some of the cool releases that launched at the start of 2024. Games like Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden, Hypercharge: Unboxed, Unicorn Overlord, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown and Harold Halibut are all great titles that deserve the spotlight as we get closer to Game of the Year season.
How Many Games Have You Bought This Year? (688 votes)
- I haven't bought any!
- 1-2
- 3-5
- 6-10
- 11-20
- 21-30
- 31-400.9%
- 41-50
- 50+
- Barely any thanks to Xbox Game Pass!
They're unlikely to win many of those awards, but that's just because we've seen so many other fantastic launches this year - highlights include Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Dragon's Dogma 2, Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, Age of Mythology: Retold.. the list really goes on and on!
If you look at Metacritic, it's Elden Ring's DLC that's secured top spot as things stand, so it'll be interesting to see if the likes of Stalker 2, Assassin's Creed Shadows or Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will be able to fare even better. There's definitely a lot to look forward to as we head into these final few months of another fruitful year!

Prince of Persia is by a wide margin my favorite game released this year on any console.
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, no contest.
Have to go Astro Bot, been ages since we have had new 3d platform game of this quality and zero bugs for me on release and running at 4K most of the time and 60fps.
It is just so polished all round and perfect gameplay.
Not had many games like that this year if any.
Dam sorry it said Xbox game. Oh well not deleting it now, but you never know in the future when we can have all games on one console it might happen.
Brotato followed very distantly by Harold Halibut… but enjoyed quite a few GP titles but nothing grabbed me like those two…
Superman 64.
Or Colony, on the ZX.
I don't buy so many games as I'm working through my backlog and have Game Pass & PS+ but still bought around 5 titles.
Best Xbox game I have played this year? Probably Chants of Senaar.
Favourite Xbox game would probably be unicorn overlord but overall it’s between astrobot and stellar blade.
The new Zelda in a few weeks may or may not change that!
I know this won't count, but easily FH4. I've enjoyed the heck out of it.
I know Starfield and Diablo 4 didn't release this year, but I have had a ton of fun with both, and they account for most of my hours (not counting Sea of Thieves which is always in my rotation)
So far College Football 25. It's nice to see College Football again and it's a nice alternative to Madden.
@RBRTMNZ couldn't agree more! Prince of Persia will most likely be my goat 2024
Well, Larian only sent my Deluxe copy of Baldur's Gate 3 a couple of months ago (despite me ordering it last year), so if that counts, then BG3 it is. If not, then I would probably opt for Banishers...
Bought +50 games no doubt.
My favorite is still Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. It really has no competition.
Hellblade 2 is my favourite, really enjoyed that one. I found it totally immersive and the only game I’ve played on Series X or PS5 to date that lives up to the ‘next gen’ billing.
Balatro on the Xbox only side of things. The game is addictive, unique, and utterly brilliant.
Prince of Persia would nab second place in an Xbox only list for me. Roughly half of my current top 10 isn’t available on Xbox at the moment. Rebirth is likely to be my GotY, with Balatro and Astro Bot in 2nd and 3rd place. Realistically, the only game I think may shake up that top three currently is the Zelda game coming end of month. Plucky Squire and Life is Strange perhaps.
If Silent Hill 2 is a solid remake, that’d hit my top 10. I suppose Sparking Zero may hit the spot much more than I expect too!
Realistically, this has been a low key year overall. When the Alan Wake dlc is #6 on my list, it just feels like it’s emblematic of 2024. A snack from a delicious meal tops most of the feasts I’ve had this year, to make a metaphor of it.
It is possibly worth pointing out that the ‘game year’ tends to be backloaded and there may well be things coming in the next few months that change everyone’s mind!
A Plague Tale: Requiem, Dragons Dogma 2, Baldur's Gate 3, Starfield, Alan Wake 2
@Balta666 I think it will likely end up as my GOTY also. The only games I haven’t played that I could see passing it are Space Marines and Mullet Madjack but both fee unlikely. I thought for sure Astro would beat it but it has fairly bland gameplay so it was a letdown for me.
Definitely Shadow of the Erdtree. It’s my GOTY.
Hellblade 2 on Xbox is my choice. I was mind blown by the graphics.
I realized i haven't bought a single game for my series X besides Persona 3 lol the backlog is just too high
Hellblade 2. Yes it’s short but visually and from a playability point of view it is one of the most stunning games I have ever played.
I’ve bought a couple games on Xbox but they were dirt cheap during sales and I used rewards points, like Lego Harry Potter.
My favorite game of the year, among all platforms, is Paper Mario TTYD. Astro Bot is right behind it.
It’s a compilation and not a new game so I don’t know if it counts; but my favourite release of 2024 is Castlevania Dominus Collection.
hellblade 2 which is still my game of the year
Star Wars Outlaws at the minute but it will probably change with Dead Rising on Thursday.
Layoff Simulator 2024
On Xbox, at the moment...it's a toss up between Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth and Dogma 2.
@Wisegamer
It was a genuine mistake to start with, then thought, post it anyway.
As for the mid generation refresh.
The Xbox one x was an absolutely outstanding mid gen refresh, of course at a better cost.
But just be ready for Xbox next generation console not to be cheap, if we get one.
Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden. It's absolutely criminal how nobody is talking about this game. It had an incredible and emotional story coupled with fun gameplay and interesting lore. I'm tired of seeing AAA and basic indie games get nominated while high quality AA projects are ignored. Anyway, it's on sale right now and I couldn't recommend it more.
@Fiendish-Beaver I'm so happy to hear that you loved Banishers too! Which ending did you get if I may ask?
Dragon's dogma 2 , visions of mana, Hellblade 2 and The First Descendant are my favorites so far.
Hellblade 2 for me.
I enjoyed Rise of the Ronin quite a bit but Hellbalde 2 was such a memrable experienace.
Penny's Big Breakaway all the way. It is very rewarding when the gameplay clicks with you
If Xbox only then Hellblade 2 otherwise Astro Bot!
Right now it's close between Dragon's Dogma 2 and LaD Infinite Wealth, but I've only gotten a chance to play 1.5 levels of Space Marine 2 and none of the multiplayer yet. If the rest of the game is that good, it's probably going to be Space Marine 2. It's been a great year.
Also, who the **** could have predicted we were going to get a sequel to Space Marine or a sequel to Dragon's Dogma, nevermind both in the same year. Craziest **** since getting 2 remakes of Wonder Boy 3 The Dragon's Trap a year of each other or so 30 years after it came out.
Honestly I don't have any favorites released this year. CoD is fine but I'm only into campaigns. Alan Wake II was a huge disappointment.
So I discovered Atlas Fallen on GP recently. It's been amazingly fun. It's a 2023 game but it's been my favorite so far this year.
If Shadow of the Erdtree counts, I’ll have to go with that, since I played it on Xbox. I’m guessing for a full fledged game, I’ll likely end up going with Space Marine 2, but I haven’t started it yet. Though Astro is my current GotY, that game is absolutely perfect and delightful to me.
My favorite game this year is “Gori: Cuddly Carnage”. (nobody plays it now… but it will be a Cult classic years down the line) amazing little game. Loved it.
@datamonkey I just got all the achievements in unicorn overlord. Now I don't know what to do with my life lol
I haven't played any new games that have dropped this year, but that's moreso due to a double hit of still being on an Xbone, and grabbing indie/smaller games that go for stupid-cheap prices. That alone has kept me insanely busy. Could probably stream Hellblade 2 at least..
@AlwaysPlaying Same! I have a serious Brotato addiction! That game has saved me a fortune, no need to do anything else in my free time!
Honestly not played much on Xbox this year apart from Alan Wake 2 and Hellblade 2. I’d have to say Hellblade 2, it was enjoyable enough but nothing really special.
definitely not senua hellblade 2
Hellblade 2 on xbox for me there's been nothing else decent though Regards to 1st party games hope indiana jones is amazing its looking it
Hellblade 2 the only game I've played on Xbox this year, so for me its that by process of elimination. Personally thought it was 'good'.
In terms of all gaming this year then easily would be Astro Bot, however I tend to be a year behind with my gaming due to crazy backlog. Finally just started Elden Ring...
Hellblade 2, I finish it 3 times.
Alan wake 2
Atlas fallen, Prince of Persia, Banishers
I haven't seen anything worth buying this year. I like single-player RPGs that don't make me feel like I'm retrogaming, have engaging NPCs, and tell a somewhat mature story. So, I haven't liked anything since BG3, obviously.
I really enjoyed Flintlock, The Siege of Dawn.
Kunitsu Gami: Path of the Goddess.
An absolute masterpiece of a game.
Gladly bought "Another Crab's Treasure"
Haven't really enjoyed any news releases this year but in terms of dlc the Alan wake 2 one is good but shadow of the erdtree is the best release this year for me it's basically another game!
@NotoriousWhiz lol well done! Now let’s hope unicorn overlord 2 is out soon 😂
