It was around this time last year that we asked the Pure Xbox community whether you agreed with the 10 highest-rated Xbox Series X|S games of all time according to Metacritic, and most of the comments generally suggested you didn't.
That list hasn't changed much in the past year - Split Fiction is the only new entry in the top 10 as things stand, although Metaphor: ReFantazio and Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance have appeared in there over the last 12 months.
If you're curious, here's how it shapes up as of today (March 20th):
- Baldur's Gate 3 (99)
- Elden Ring (96)
- Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree (95)
- Persona 5 Royal (94)
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition (94)
- Hades (93)
- The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe (93)
- Split Fiction (92)
- Forza Horizon 5 (92)
- Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth (92)
But anyway, let's look beyond just Metacritic and what the reviewers are saying!
For example, if you go further down the list you'll start noticing the likes of Alan Wake 2, Sea of Stars, Immortality, Dragon's Dogma 2, Hogwarts Legacy, Stray, Street Fighter 6, Resident Evil 4... there's so much to choose from!
And those are just the third-party titles. When it comes to first-party, there's Halo Infinite, Starfield, Psychonauts 2, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Forza Horizon 5, Forza Motorsport, Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2, Hi-Fi Rush and a lot more.
So, we know this is a hard question, but we want the one game you've enjoyed the most throughout the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S generation so far. You can always tell us about a second and third as well if you want to!
What's your pick? Come and let us know down in the comments section below.

My pick is still Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth.
Best First party game IMO has been Flight
Sim 24: I just find it extremely relaxing and the campaign mode makes it feel even more rewarding.
Best 2nd party game has been Black Ops 6. Just incredible experience and really brings back memories.
Best 3rd Party Game has probably been Final Fantasy Crisis Core. I find older FF games harder to get into because I didn’t grow up with them.
As a bonus.
Best OG game is Grabbed by the Goulies. A very underrated Rareware game.
Best 360 game is Black Ops 2 obviously.
Best One game is Outer Worlds.
Chained Echoes for me, followed by sea of stars, baldurs gate 3, metaphor refantazio, and like a dragon 8
My favourite game I’ve played on Xbox is Forza Horizon 5.
My favourite game of this generation (and all time) is Elden Ring.
For me it would be Lies of P.
Since my favorite game from this current gen is not (yet) on XBOX, I will have to pick Alan Wake 2
Hi-Fi Rush sweeps easily
Alan Wake 2 is the best game on Xbox this generation for sure.
For first party games, I think I might pick Psychonauts 2 as the best one this generation so far for me. I probably would’ve said Hi-Fi Rush at a different point, but my son just loves Psychonauts 2 so much that I can’t not pick it as his enthusiasm is contagious.
Elden Ring would have to my favourite game by a decent bit but I also loved RoboCop and Indiana Jones and Alan wake 2 is an amazing game!👏
And the a plague tale games aswell they were brilliant and would make a great if somewhat depressing film!
Elden Ring for me, but I think AC Shadows has a good chance of taking that off the throne. Indiana Jones comes close second.
The best thing I have played on Xbox this gen is Avowed. I really loved it for the most part.
But I don't think it would touch my top 10 favourites in the same time period from all platforms.
I’m just going to cheat by saying Psychonauts 2 is the best Xbox-published game, Elden Ring is the best third party singleplayer game, and Split Fiction is the best third party multiplayer game.
Oh okay fine, I see that gun you have held up to my head; I’ll label Elden Ring as my overall winner. Psychonauts 2 and Split Fiction deserve mention though as the obvious runners up. Please don’t ask me to rank them!
You didn’t ask, but I’m going to give some [very] honourable mentions anyway to: Lies of P, Kena: Bridge of Spirits, Death’s Door, and It Takes Two.
Probably,
Coral Island. It’s still a work in progress but as a long time bokumono fan it hit all the things I love about farming sims while having a fresh setting, likable NPCs, and a fun overarching story. I had hoped it would come out on Switch but it is the main reason I have gamepass at this point. (I still play other games on GPU otherwise I would just buy the game) I play every day, even if I am focused on a game on another system.
1. Pentiment.
2. Citizen Sleeper
@Ryu_Niiyama Coral Island is easily the best Game Preview game I have ever played. That's exactly how a Game Preview game should be (functionally). I put countless hours in that before I sadly had a save game bug, but man, I got so far and had so much fun. I daresay it compares to Stardew Valley, and I don't say that lightly.
Rune Factory 4 (Xbox) is another great game of the same ilk.
I would have to go back and look at my list but right now the four that come to mind are Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Avowed and Unpacking and Stardew Valley.
Forza Horizon 5, I'm a sucker for carpgs!
Fave game of the gen has been Elden Ring, but I played that on ps5.
It's nice to say that some of my fave Xbox games have been recent. Indy and Avowed have been good fun and now the acquired studios are starting to deliver, I expect a lot more of my memorable games will be delivered via GP this gen.
Elden Ring and SOTE hands down my all time favorite game. Just finished the Witcher 3, and that is a close 2nd. After that is Dragon's Dogma II.
First-party: Senua's Saga.
Third-party: Lost Records: Bloom & Rage.
Halo Infinite is definitely one of them to me. The campaign sucked me in like it was a new Metroid game from Nintendo.
Most memorable experience: Hellblade 2 bar none
Best game: cheat and say p5:r and p3:re
Of note: purchased but not yet played elden ring or metaphor, also when rebirth comes that will probably be my fave 🙏
Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth.
Like a Dragon Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii
Metaphor Re:Fantazio
Vampire Survivors
Persona 5 Royal too if you count that one.
@FarmDog08
The real GOTY.
No hesitation in saying that my favourite game of all time is Baldur's Gate 3. It is simply sublime, and I have invested somewhere over 2000 hours into it and still feel I can continue playing...
Played on Series X (not PS5 or PC) mostly thanks to Gamepass which is just brilliant value whichever way you look at it.
Indiana Jones
Halo Infinite
Ghostwire Tokyo
Aliens Dark Descent
Microsoft Flight Simulator
Hades
Immortality
A Plague Tale (both games)
Unpacking
The Artful Escape
Night in the Woods
Turtles Shredders Revenge
Edit: also loved Hellblade 2 and Still Wakes the Deep but played both on PC.
@Kaloudz haha happy to see a Coral Island fan. I would say go back if you can. I took a break and they updated a bunch of stuff and ended up starting over.
Starfield. Easily.
After that, a few amazing indies: Citizen Sleeper, Sable, Neon White, Tunic.
Space Marine 2 and Aliens Dark Descent are probably my two most played and enjoyable recent games. To be fair, most of my time has been spent on older games.
The answer is simple: HI-FI rush
@Ryu_Niiyama ohhh nice!! I might just try It out again. I did get really far though. Did they extend end game?
@Kaloudz I may not be as far along as you. I am unlocking the orchestra sites under the sea but I haven’t reached rank A yet for my town so no work with the guardians and I am still working down the cave of memories. Also still working on sea crop shipping. Also not married yet.
I loved Psychonauts 2, FH5 and Hi-fi Rush. A lot. I really enjoyed the main story in Starfield too.
I think my top 2 would be Senua's Saga (it just felt very special) or Indiana Jones. I didn't 100% either because I don't care for that mostly, but for story and general enjoyment these are the 2 for me.
I impulse bought the Indy Collector's Edition today when I saw it was nearly half price (£95) from Game and I want the DLC and the globe looks cool.
Very honourable mention from me to Cocoon and Dungeons of Hinterberg.
Best xbox 1st party is hi-fi rush definitely. I even bought deluxe edition despite GP.
3rd party I would go with lies of P.
Starfield, Game of the gen, and I'm not joking, I like it muchly
@Tdx
Agreed, Starfield is where it's at, tech-bros know it.
@VoidPunk Thank you for giving Grabbed By The Ghoulies its flowers. Great game.
Best Indy: Brotato
Best GP game: Starfield
Best game: Baldurs Gate 3
Honorable mentions: Indy, High Fi Rush and the Turnip Boy games
for single player its easily psychonauts 2 and bomb rush cyberfunk for me
I don't think Xbox has had a single game for the Series X Gen I've been interested in that wouldn't have run just as well on an Xbox One X. But I also don't have normal taste in anything, so it doesn't mean much. If I had to pick one I guess Shredder's Revenge. My first Beat 'Em Up and it made me fall in love with the Genre.
Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous, Elden Ring, Remnant 2. Hard for me to pick.
Does gears 5 count, gears is greatest Xbox franchise ever and I can’t wait for the ps5 versions.
@Ryu_Niiyama Ahhhh yeah I was much further. I think one my save I was nearly 100 hours in and was pretty much at the end game. That's why I didn't return because of the workload I put in before my save wiped. I think I might jump back though if they've updated it a bit since! It's the only game, like I said above, that really touches Stardew imo.
I’m surprised no-one has yet mentioned Cyberpunk 2077, which would probably be my choice. CD Projekt Red created an amazing futuristic world to explore. Yes, the game had its issues at launch, but it has more than redeemed itself since. It’s also the only game this gen that I’ve played through twice.
@cburg Two kindred spirits! DD2 is my second fave after Elden Ring but I have yet to play the Witcher 3! Its on my list for the latter half of this year.
Halo infinite . Warhammer 40k Space marine 2
Haven't played many new releases and of those I did play they didn't set the world alight or were complete disasters. There have been a few highlights, though. Haven't bought anything new for Xbox. My Series S is basically my Xbox BC/retro gaming console.
Indiana Jones was fun while it lasted and it captured the feel of the movies splendidly, but not something I'd play through again.
Elden Ring was superb, however having recently started Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 (PC ) it's absolutely clear that this will be my game of the generation. It's everything I want from an immersive, interactive experience and then some. When it releases on GoG at the end of this month I'll double dip so I can download the offline installers.
Best game of this generation so far for me has to be Hogwarts Legacy. Just because of the phenomenal attention to detail.
Unfortunately, I have only played the PS5 version.
I only seem to use the XBox for exclusives.
So it has to be Starfield. No Question.
Of course, will there actually be such a thing as “Xbox exclusive games” in the future?
STALKER 2
Witcher 3
The games that I have been most impressed with have been Hogwards Legacy and Witcher 3.
Still Wakes the Deep is my most memorable game I've played on my XSX.
I've played a lot of games on my XSX, but probably a lot more on PS5/PC/Switch over that period.
In terms of total time, I probably spent most on AC Valhalla! Forza too.
Those are good fun but not something where you remember specific parts 10 years later.
Where as with Still Wakes the Deep I will.
First party: Forza horizon 5
Third party: Hades (while it was on GP)
@somnambulance could you play Alan wake 2 and fully enjoy without playing the first?
Stalker 2 has consumed my free time, despite the bugs, the goofy A-Life, it is still such an immersive experience.
On a great TV, high quality headphones, in a dark room...holy freaking gaming goodness.
I really had a good time with Redfall too, long after the last patch, it was pretty close to what I had originally hoped for.
Starfield was why I bought the Series X at the start of the gen, but it was my biggest gaming letdown by far, still bums me out.
Also getting to play Far Cry 2 on a console again ha ha
