With a brand-new year ahead of us, this is always the time when people begin to make their resolutions for the 12 months ahead, most of which they inevitably never stick to. Still, it's nice to have some goals in mind for the future!
When it comes to gaming, there are all kinds of resolutions that you might have in mind. Perhaps you want to complete more games this year? Perhaps you want to start buying less games and dipping into your backlog more? Perhaps you want to dig out your old OG Xbox or Xbox 360 consoles and check out some retro classics in 2025?
For me personally, a resolution is to stop avoiding games that seem too overwhelming. The likes of Baldur's Gate 3 and Metaphor: ReFantazio are so vast that I typically avoid them because I "haven't got much time to play right now", but with a feature like Quick Resume, there's always at least a bit of time to chip away at these titles.
So, what about you? Have you got any gaming resolutions in mind for the year ahead, or are you just happy to go with the flow? We'd love to hear about your gaming plans for 2025 down in the comments section below.

To play the games I own lol.
My gaming New Year resolution is to actually play less games and to put more time into the games I do play. I also want to revisit more classic games that I love such as Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 4, and older COD campaigns like MW2 2009.
Also, to not rub it into Ponies faces when Xbox surpasses Sony in gaming revenue this year. It'll be hard, but I think I can do it.
I'm going to be working full time and going to school as well. So my resolution is "try to find the time to play anything at all"
Finish what I start (as long as I'm liking it, of course).
My New Year Resolution is to play less games. That being said there's currently 31 games on my wish list that havent been released yet. It will be interesting to see how many of them come out in 2025 and even more importantly, how many of them are actually good/fun. I'm very much excited for 2025 though, with game releases, pehaps a new Switch and maybe even an Xbox handheld.
On another note, my other gaming related Resolution is to stop reading comment sections because one thing I have noticed is that every single game I have enjoyed this year have been getting a lot of "hate" online which, even though I try not to care it sometimes does ruin my enjoyment. This also means that I will try to engage less in comment sections myself and try to only focus on reading articles on games I like/is interested in and leave it at that.
Happy New Year Everybody. May 2025 bring you all a lot of incredible gaming experiences. All the best!
Last year, mine was to play all the Yakuza games, and I did (I had already played a few, but I played all of them again), so this year it will be to play the ones that release.
Same with Assassin's Creed, will be playing Shadows as soon as it releases.
Another one I have, and I know this is an Xbox site, but it will be to play some PS4 games I never had the chance to.
The PS5 was a complete disappointment for me, so I'll go back to the PS4 catalogue, and I mean third party exclusives like some KOEI Tecmo games, couldn't care less about the first party exclusives.
Maybe play some (most) of the Game Pass games I'm interested in, too.
I mean, it's a whole year.
Get the games I bought and never completed done!
If I roll credits on, like, 8 games this year I think I'll be doing good!
Spend more time with games I enjoy. Go for more achievement/trophies. I have been racing to the credits in all the games lately. I beat a ton of games over the last few years but I kind of regret not slowing down and enjoying the ones I really liked.
I have defeated the FOMO aspect of needing to play games at launch, now I need to defeat the pressure of a building backlog. The backlog will be a mile long either way, might as well get as much fun out of each game as I can
I do pride myself on not quiting a game even if I dislike it. Those games are still going to be rushed through.
This year I'm certainly buying less new games than ever before as I've still got plenty I've not put much time into. This year I'll be starting off by playing much more in VR than on the TV, I've got back into it recently and enjoying it much more than I have traditional gaming for the last few year
I already play too much but I’d like to both play less hours AND play more games. That initially sounds impossible but looking back on the last few years I have put a lot of hours into live services and played less games as a result. I’d like to keep playing some of these live services more casually hopefully freeing up time to play a wider selection of games again.
Hmm.. besides the inevitable "play my backlog" response, I think actually I might finally sit down and try to play an RTS. I've always been intimidated by the genre, and while I love the Command & Conquer: Renegade spinoff (I still play it to this day! There are dozens of us, dozens!, still on servers!!) I've always been scared off by the proper C&C games. Never been that great at them... but maybe this is the year that changes.
Or, realistically, I'll still suck at them but at least manage to beat Red Alert 2.
To finally finish sekiro. Got about 15 hours in then game pass distracted me for months. Letting the sub lapse for a short while until I'm ready to play Avowed and South of Midnight.
I Made a list earlier of around 40-50 games that I’ve either started and not finished or bought and not started so my new years resolution is to try and get through them all or as much of them as possible.
To play thru 1/5 (20%) of my backlog otherwise with new entry’s to be added this year I’m at risk of it becoming much to big and unmanageable
Obviously tackle the backlog. As a subscriber to GPU and often afflicted by 'indecision syndrome ', I'm gonna try a method my m8 suggested.
The D&D approach. Gonna use D&D dice to randomly roll which game to play next on GP.
He's used it awhile and usually ends up playing some interesting esoteric titles.
Have a great gaming 2025 peoples.
Spending more time and getting the most out of my games. This was my resolution last year and it worked. I got 12 platinum trophies on the PS5 (I didn’t play Xbox at all in 2024 until late November). I plan on doing the same, particularly with my backlog of Xbox games and their upcoming releases.
I would also like to avoid the constant negativity around gaming in general. I don’t care about what platform is better, or if a game didn’t make its sale goal, therefore it’s “trash”. Some of my favorite games released last year got negative publicity, sometimes from critics and sometimes from audiences. I just want to enjoy games, whether that is on Xbox, PS5 or Switch, and make better informed decisions by trying a game I’m interested in and not letting the public sway my opinion (unless it’s obvious).
Not really sure I'm making one this year. I'll play what I can where I can. Only thing I'm trying to do this year is maybe stop subbing to gamepass. I'm sort of done with subscriptions. I canceled a bunch of TV streaming channels recently too.
Play more. Not being flippant either - spoke to my partner about where we can fit another TV so I can spend some free time actually doing the hobby I most enjoy. Work too hard to not have a bit more time to myself. And then get through the backlog and play a few games I've missed over the last couple of years.
@NintendoByNature I did the same - just went through my direct debits on my online banking and ruthlessly just culled almost all of them. I also now buy a 3 month Gamepass subscription (about £20 from CDKeys). It's cathartic and those £10/£15 subscriptions add up REALLY quickly each month.
my aim this year is to get some platinum trophies and try and play a bit more on my series x but my main challenges are to try and beat both a souls like and a rougelike which I would be extremely proud of myself if I manage that
@Scrubchub good call. It feels good cleaning house doesn't it? I'm saving $50/ month now with my recent cuts. Gamepass is going to be hard to unsub too though if I'm being honest. I really do enjoy it.

Oh yeah I bet they are furious that Sony wasn't able to buy Candy Crush Saga before Microsoft so they could pretend mobile slop is playstation revenue.
@NintendoByNature in that case really do look up buying a key from it. I just bought 4 lots of months for £20 each from CDKeys. Nice to know I'm stocked up for the next year.
happy new year to everyone 🎊
first I'm looking forward to play a bit of my huge catalog of games 😅
then I really hope to finish IMMORTALS Fenyx Rising with my little nephew.
on Steam I'm playing Gears Tactics that I found really really good.
have a good day you all ☀️
Avoid even more triple A slop.
As far as Xbox goes...beat the first three Dragon Age games and Witcher 3.
I don't bother with resolutions, so I'll just carry on as normal 😁
Happy Gaming Everyone 👍
absolutely nothing . resolutions suck , i rather have freedom to do what i want 😂
@RetroMan71 well said
My gaming resolution for the next while?
480i, as I want to start catching up on some of the OG Xbox games I've been accumulating.
