Well, it's almost time to close the book on 2023! In this final weekend before the new year, there's plenty to keep ourselves busy on Xbox including an incredible backlog of Game Pass titles and some new additions to the Xbox Countdown Sale!
Here's what we're playing this weekend:
Fraser Gilbert, Editor
I think it's a Red Dead Redemption 2 weekend for me! I've never really played a lot of it (the original never appealed to me much) but I've been in a big Grand Theft Auto mood recently and I feel like RDR is the natural next step.
Speaking of Grand Theft Auto, I've been reinstalling the GTA Trilogy remasters along with GTA 4 over the past couple of weeks, and I'm slowly making progress in each of them. GTA 4 definitely still holds up, so I'm looking forward to revisiting that game properly and then finally making a start in the two DLC campaigns.
Have a good weekend and enjoy your New Year's Eve celebrations, folks!

Having finally finished Resident Evil 4, and spending some time blasting through Alan Wake 2 last week, I'm thinking of revisiting some of Remedy's other Xbox releases. I've never played Alan Wake Remastered so that's one option (the 360 version still holds up though!), but I'm also tempted to go back to Quantum Break. Hmm... decisions, decisions.
Anyway, while I'm making my mind up there I'll be jumping back into Lake to play its Christmas-themed DLC. I picked the bundle up a few weeks ago after enjoying the base game on Game Pass and have been meaning to play the DLC over the festive period. Hopefully I can squeeze it in before the new year!
Speaking of which - have a great start to 2024, PXers!
Craig Reid, Video Producer
It’s the final weekend of 2023 and what a year it has been! I’m spoilt for choice on what I could play this weekend but If I hope to finish Final Fantasy IX before the year end I’m gonna have to schedule a lazy Saturday in bed to crack on with it! I’m so close to the end, I can feel it in my bones, folks!
When I’m not chugging through Final ‘David Bowie’ Fantasy, I’ll most likely be sweating it on Call of Duty Modern Warfare III, The Finals and Battlefield V. Nothing like festive firefights to see you into the new year.
Merry gaming and a Happy New Year, Pure Xbox!
What will you be playing on Xbox this weekend? Let us know down in the comments below.

Streets of Rage 4 and the DLC, which I picked up in the Countdown sale, and Marvel's Midnight Suns which isn't usually my type of game but I'm really enjoying it
But much really. Probably a bit of Halo but aside from that I’ll mainly be playing Final Fantasy Tactics Advance on my new blue Analogue Pocket. I know! I’m as surprised as you are! I wasn’t always a just Halo guy. I’ve always loved the world of “classic” FF games before they took on more modern settings. After this I’m going to check out FF IV.
Other than that my wife is playing Army of Ruin. It’s a surviors-like. We’re not finding it as fair as Vampire Survivors though. Not sure it’ll get completed 100% like VS.
I'll definitely be playing some more The Finals and Cyberpunk if I find the time.
As I don’t want to play Baldur’s Gate 3 until the save bug is fixed (my wife lost her saves last week, 50+ hours down the drain), I decided to check out some of Larian’s previous work.
So I’m playing Divinity 2: The Dragon Knight Saga. The gameplay is pretty fun after you get used to the jankiness, but the voice acting is sometimes painfully bad, and the writing is not very good either (lots of sexist jokes that would’ve felt mossy back in 2009 too).
But the gameplay and exploration is fun, so I plan to finish this and then maybe move on to Divinity: Original sin, which I’m sure has aged better than this game.
@JoakimZ that’s a shame to hear about D2. I know the Divinity series is a bit rough as they didn’t have BG3 money but that doesn’t excuse sexism.
My wife and I played through a bit of Original Sin but I think we hit a grand breaking bug. Neither of us are typically into turn based strategy. We’re giving BG3 a try but haven’t played in over a week because of the holidays.
This weekend I’m playing Remnant 2. I know word of mouth has been incredibly positive, and a couple of my coworkers were discussing it a couple of days ago which sold me on it. For some reason I wasn’t sure what to expect from this game — I thought it was more of a rougelike, or similar to Returnal, or even a live service game, but I was wrong. It’s essentially Dark Souls but with guns, and it is awesome.
I’m only a few hours in and I’m enjoying it thoroughly. In case others don’t know, everyone’s experience is different — your starting location may be different than mine. I was put into Seeker’s Rest. So far, I’ve beaten three bosses, a side dungeon, and currently killed a world boss to progress the main campaign. All solo, by the way. It’s great fun.
I’m also still playing Kingdoms of Amalur Re-Reckoning. I fizzled out on it after 60+ odd hours, so I needed a break. I’m roughly 60% through the main campaign and I’ve hardly touched the faction quests. More than likely I’ll jump back into the game fully head on in about a week or two. I love the game, and it hits all the right notes for me in terms of a fantasy RPG. My goal is to get the Platinum trophy for it before The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered releases.
I'm gonna play Red Dead Redemption Game Of The Year Edition..
On switch, just hades. On xbox, just psychonauts 2. Happy new year everyone.
One Piece Odyssey. A pretty fun game right especially if you are a fan of the series. I’ll throw in some fighting games as well. King of Fighters 15 and Samurai Showdown.
Mario Kart: Super Circuit (GBA) - Some family are still with us until the new year, so I'm spending time with one of my favourite racers of all time.
Uncharted: Golden Abyss (Vita) - I'm still ticking away slowly on this. Only made it to chapter 4 so far.
Plants vs. Zombies (Windows Phone) - Still playing hard levels.
I'm digging deep into my backlog this weekend. Hoping to complete a couple of these older games.
Xbox - call of duty modern Warfare II (2022)
Playstation - trover saves the universe (psvr1)
Nintendo - Kirby return to dreamland
Pc- prince of persia 2008, gta San andreas
Jumping into Elden Ring first the first time. Going full glass cannon mage because I've played so much melee lately in other games
Trying to get past Corrupted Parade Master in Lies of P and move on to chapter 10
Mario Party and Mario wonder with the fam
The allure of Starfield and Hogwarts Legacy continues to hold me strongly within their unrelenting grip. However, a need to take a step back from these seems more than in order at the moment, so I'll be exploring What Remains of Edith Finch for a bit, and also Firewatch if I get the time.
I have never played any Halo games so diving into the MC edition and getting through the original. Can’t believe I pinged a rare achievement by picking up a crystal skull …
This weekend I'm going to continue playing Trails of Cold Steel II, hopefully I can beat it within the next few sessions.
And until I do beat it, I won't play anything else.
Making a run on Dark Souls 2 and the dlc’s.
World of Warcraft WotLK Classic (PC) Still leveling up my Troll Shaman currently at level 21.
Super Mario Wonder (Switch) Hoping to start this game, heard alot of good things about it.
Ken Griffey Jr Presents Major League Baseball (Super NT) Need to get back to my season.
Mostly Splatoon 3 and some Dishonored Definitive Edition.
Finished TLOUP1 Remake on PS5 & replaying Sniper Elite 4
Finished Figment 2 on GP & always 100% FH5 Season each week
Chico and the Magic Orchards perhaps, the Pokemon DLC, maybe Yooka Laylee, and I’d like to play a bit of Street Fighter 6… if I play anything. I’ve been sort of under the weather today, but it’s a three day weekend.
Currently playing Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Great game. Probably going to pick up BG3 soon. Also, about two hours into El Paso, Elsewhere. A lot of fun.
Was gonna buy and jump into BG3 over the hols but the save bug stopped me. Picked up Robocop:Alex Murphy edition instead. Only a short way's in so far. Loving it. Also maybe a race or two in Forza.
MWIII, actually like the updates they did on the original MW2 maps which were my favorite in the series
Taking a break from Divinity: Original Sin to play Cocoon. About 80% of the way through so hoping to finish it in a day to two.
I just picked up Alan Wake 2 on sale. I’m going to jump into that as soon as i finish up Immortals of Aviam, which I’ve been very much enjoying. Have a great weekend everyone!
Starfield and Sea of Stars, mainly. Some Forza Motorsport, Horizon, Tekken 8 demo, and UFC 5 are sprinkled in.
Finally playing both Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Persona 5 Tactica.
Well, Forza Motorsport 👌💚
Playing some WWZ Aftermath with the guys, and thinking about playing something on PS5 like Spider-Man 2 or Ghost of Tsushima, but I haven't decided just yet.
When I can sneak some gaming in,
Top Spin on original Xbox.
Dead Space on Series S.
Mario Wonder on Switch.
Top Spin really holds up as a great tennis game as well, brilliant stuff.
Hope everyone has a good New Year's.
Still rocking through Baldurs Gate 3! Game is massive. Also grabbed AC Mirage on the Xbox sale and going to give that a go. I am a sucker for AC games, I’ve beaten them all. Oh and maybe squeeze in some time with Asgards Wrath 2 on the Quest 3. That game should not be slept on either. Pretty spectacular the job the devs did on that game.
Starfield it has me hooked! Every chance I get I'm firing my Xbox up and jumping back on this game now! It's going to be pretty depressing when reality kicks in and I have to go back to work!! I've been getting as many hours in as I can around looking after 2 young kids anyway.
Playing through ori and the blind forest and deaths door on pc. Both really good.
I'm bouncing between 3 games. Terminator and Grounded on Series X. Then I'm playing Smash Bros with my son to unlock new characters
Playing Baldurs gate 3, 12 hours in... loving it
Also Farcry 6, which is stupid fun ...im sure ill get tired of it soon due to how repetitive the game is. But so far im quite enjoying it .
Just finished Bramble (hidden gem) and started first play through of Quantum Break on X1X.
Really wanted to get into Xenoblade Chronicles 3 but got bored last weekend after 10hrs - seems to be little more than 5 minute cut scene, 1 min walking, combat, 1 min walking, combat , 1 min walking, combat… rinse and repeat.
Still liking Remnant 2.
Also made a start on Tales of Arise. Liking the combat so far.
Im gonna be having a good ol' time with Spam Factory Worker and Pooper Scooper Trooper. A couple of masterpiece games to start the new year with.
Wow a year ago I wasn’t even really on this site and now a year later here I am participating in the last WAYP of the year. Well I’m happy to do it. Been a good week of getting games even if we haven’t beat very many of them hahaha. Between Christmas and other things I picked up copies of Assassins Creed Mirage, Fate/Samurai Remnant, Armored Core VI Flames of Rubicon, Dave the Diver (finally), and the big game, my first game on switch of 2024 and the game I picked for the poll Dragon Quest Monsters The Dark Prince. It’s that last game I think I’ll focus on in the new year too. My December/early January game. It won’t technically be my first game of the year that’ll be Fate Samurai/Remnant. The Type Moon guys take New Years seriously so will I. But of course that’s the holiday what about this weekend? Well this weekend didn’t have much gaming outside of some Armored Core but that’s because I was doing something personally much more important. I had a excellent time with a amazing friend at a local mall. And honestly like most times with them it was simply amazing. The gifts they got me I’ll treasure and love for a long long long time. Maybe forever but that’s too big for me to think hahahah. Agent Gap is now a member of Operation Strix. They’ll see this so they’ll get the reference hehehe. I’ve said it before to yall but there really are some things more important than gaming. As for the rest of the weekend and week ahead ima focus on getting my Top 10 Lists in order and really just minding my business and working until the first big releases of 2024. For me those will be Another Code Recollection and Tekken 8. As for anime of the week it was a lot of finales and honestly all the finales I watched stuck the landing. My Inexperienced Love Story, Girlfriend, Girlfriend, Frieren, Spy X Family, 16 Bit Sensation, Eminence in Shadow, and Jujutsu Kaisen. Add in Ron Kaminohashi which I’m trying to finish today and you probably have my fall picks when it comes to anime. As for podcasts of course we’re full of GOTY Installments from all of them which makes me really happy I love those sorts of episodes. So you know the usual: Castle Superbeast, Big Think Dimension, Minnmax, Remap Radio, Nextlander, Fire Escape, RPGsites Tetracast, Weapon Wheel and of course my two newcomers Windbreaker and Firelink from the Second Wind Media guys. Also of course a big shoutout to my stoner retro catgirl friend at twitch.tv/akibread. Here’s hoping through these small shoutouts we can make 2024 their year. Overall yall it’s been a great year with everyone on this site from contributors to fellows commenters. It’s been one of the greatest years in gaming with one of the strongest start to the next year that I think I have ever seen. To my buddies who read this every week like my buddy Gaddy, Agent Gap, Az, Spence, Sib and so so so many more that I could write a entire article about thank you so so much from the bottom of my heart. And I look forward to a terrrifc, happy and healthy new year with all of you and all of you commenters and contributors. As always have a excellent, happy, safe and healthy weekend and Happy Gaming. HAPPY NEW YEAR.
