Believe it or not, it's been three months since Xbox Games With Gold came to a close! The service was replaced with Xbox Game Pass Core back in September, bringing an end to the monthly "free" games given away by Xbox.
The final selection of GwG titles arrived back in August in the form of Blue Fire and Inertial Drift, after which the service was replaced with 36 Game Pass titles that became accessible at no extra charge to XBL Gold subscribers.
There's been very little talk about Xbox Games With Gold since, and ultimately it feels like most Xbox fans are pretty happy with the new Game Pass Core offering. We polled the Pure Xbox community about this back in September and found that only 20% of voters were vehemently opposed to the removal of GWG and Xbox Live Gold.
But that was September, and this is now! With 2023 about to finish up, we're interested to know how you're feeling about Xbox Games With Gold and Xbox Game Pass Core, and whether you think Microsoft made the right decision...

What I miss the most was the 360 games among them as I was an on and off subscribers but you were able to keep the 360 games even when the subscriptions ended… They really felt like small gift every month…
Never thought about it anymore tbf
I had free games every month and now I have nothing in its place. So yeah.
It was that bad it makes no difference either way lol laughable service that was
Despite the lineups mostly being 'meh' and 'trash', losing a perk such as monthly games stinks when PS+ still does it. The games were small and unheard of enough to not be on GP, and getting random weird s**t pissed me off at first. But now they have me looking into smaller indie games cuz they have a higher shot at being worth my time. I genuinely had fun playing some games like Sudden Strike 4 and Lamentum (forgot the other games ATM), so I do kinda miss it since it's one less service to stuff my catalogue with games to experience.
Apart from the very final months free games, there had been very little for me in over a year.
It's a shame they didn't try to make it something better but if it was going to continue disappointing everyone with rubbish each month, its best that they ended it.
Checking out hidden and under the radar games was my favorite aspect of Games With Gold. Big recognizable titles are easy enough to come by, but so many smaller lesser-known titles get lost in the shuffle and disappear into the mists of time. The ability to discover games I wouldn't have played or otherwise known about was a brilliant perk, and now that it's been removed, it is sorely missed...
I miss the 360 games but only game us a handful of xbone games that were actually good sure once gamepass started it was the end of games with Gold and gold in general
Considering I didn't realise its been three months since it ended, I guess I'd forgotten about it.
The only thing I miss about GwG is the 360 games. Once redeemed, they were permanently added to your library.
I miss people bashing on em
Thing is, @Dan1283, yes, the games were often of poor quality, but for those of us that have Game Pass Ultimate, all that happened was that we had an increase in price, and received less in return. Even poor quality games is better than nothing, and every now and again, something worthwhile rocked up...
Games With Gold was rough in more recent years but it was better than the mess that is Game Pass Core.
The removal of Games With Gold also means that if you're a Game Pass Ultimate member, you're basically spending more money to subscribe to a service which has less content (the Game Pass Core games are already in Ultimate but lots of times the Gold games weren't).
I do miss Games With Gold… from like five or six years ago. The service had been patchy for a while.
Of course. They we’re free games.
Sony still give me free games, but Microsoft don’t.
People complained that the games were crap and a waste of time. I always argued that 'lesser' games were less likely to be already owned by most people and therefore worthwhile, games many wouldn't usually buy. Some gems were in there, occasionally.
Well, the moaners got what they wanted and now we actually get less bang for our buck as a Gamepass Ultimate subscriber.
I do slightly miss it in an endearing way but by no means do I miss it in practicality.
GwG had been Garbage Day for years.
I miss complaining about it a little bit and I do miss the anticipation from when these games were actually good.
Of course I'm missing it. Gave a bunch of free games. And the 360 games you could play even if you didn't have live.
On top of that it was an added benefit if you had Gamepass. As is, the removal was nothing but a detriment for Gamepass subscribers. There was no benefit added to replace it for Gamepass subscribers and instead only another lame tier of Gamepass was made.
@Maddie47 I’m paying the same amount for Xbox Game Pass that I was paying 3 months ago.
But I’m getting 3 less games per month.
So yes, they were free. Because I was getting them for the same price they’re not giving me them for.
And the PS+ sub is a moot point. Sony still lets me keep 3 games a month. Xbox stopped.
That’s not fun as a customer.
I don't miss it but at the same time, although I am a Game Pass Ultimate subscriber, I am not a fan of subscription services in general. When they can offer you what they want when they want, and if you didn't know about it, you missed out. Games with Gold was worse in the sense that you only had a couple weeks to find out about and claim a game, but just bad as Game Pass in that if you stop making payments, well... it's all gone, poof, away with the rest of the service.
Games with Gold or Game Pass, I always just buy outright the games that I want. I don't like playing their stupid little games of teasing "ownership" behind some paid service.
I miss the days when they offered better titles. I was one who regularly bemoaned the quality of titles offered in the final year. But we all wanted them to improve the selection, not offer nothing! As pointed out, we only have one comparitive service and that does still offer free games.
I also dont like that game pass console, or gamepass PC, doesnt offer you multiplayer - thats only included with ultimate. Together with banning 3rd party peripherals and the still way over priced proprietary memory expansions and introducing more advertising on the dashboard, it feels like MS is nickel and diming its customers a bit, certainly compared with its main rival.
Thank god game pass remains such value! As long as you use GP, you're winning overall 😁
@UnusedBabyWipes aye I enjoyed Lamentum
I don't miss it really, I thought I would have but I guess there are enough games on game pass to keep me busy anyway. I think for people on Game Pass Core they get a good list of first party games to play with all of us too.
Well it sucks now since it seems like the quests give less points on game pass... so now we don't get to get licenses to games and less points for things to purchase just wait price will go up again since we are getting less.
I don’t miss the quality of titles, they were 90% games I’d never play in the last couple of years with the occasional gem like Yoku’s Island Express.
But I do miss when there were better games more frequently and I do think it’s not right that they removed GwG but added nothing for Game Pass Ultimate subscribers, in addition to raising prices. That’s not right at all.
I miss the additional games being added to my library. I liked that they weren't the big names that I had already either played or decided I didn't want to play. I discovered a lot of good games (and studios) in gwg that I wouldn't have ever considered paying to try.
The thing I've found disappointing about Gamepass Core is the price. Compared to Ultimate I mean. It always seems that getting Ultimate is almost just as cheap as getting Core. I'm talking if you hunt around for deals naturally, not the list price which is of course more for Ultimate. But I don't think I've ever paid list price for Gamepass of PS+ for that matter.
This may just be a reflection of the fact that Ultimate is incredible value, but it rather feels like Core is an afterthought. Or rather that its intended market is the impulse purchase "I want to play online for the holidays" sort of thing. Which is not my market - so it feels that Core is not for me (even though in principle I wouldn't mind trying it out).
I do miss the principle that once you get the games, you can keep them for as long as you subscribe the plan. GamePass keeps the games on the list for a limited time only and provides mere 14 days notice of delisting.
Never used/bought but honestly the Indies were fair (and the big games offered 'when companies offered them versus Gamepass or let them never go on the service because of their own priorities) but people didn't care about them later in the lineup so not surprised Microsoft changed it for online/whatever else instead. People and big games after all.
Inertial Drift and another was great to see on Xbox/PS+ I forget.
Even if more OG/360 people complain if the big they want isn't there/at the time they noticed/don't recycle. A fair amount cycled I'd say.
At least you never pay for base/low level cloud storage with Xbox like you do Sony/Nintendo you get a decent entry level storage then pay more for One Drive higher storage.
I really miss the free games, I also really miss the decent free games they used to give, I don't understand why it went so down hill especially towards the end and I also don't understand why they got rid of it in the first place.
So rethinking needs to happen that's for sure.
Can't say I miss Games With Gold. I can count the number of them I've downloaded and played in the last two years on one hand. They were rarely any good.
@Ssoltek You don't even need to be subscribed, do you? My Gamepass Ultimate lapsed a couple of months ago and I've not renewed yet and fairly sure I can still play the Games With Gold games I had received when I was subscribed.
@Kienda So how much are you paying for Gamepass Ultimate ? PS Plus Premium dosent give anywhere near the value of Ultimate Gamepass.
Premium costs more per month, only gives old games and that's it.
Ultimate Gamepass gives Day One First and 3rd party games day one, it also gives PC games, Play Anywhere titles and EA Play.
You can get Ultimate Gamepass much cheaper as Microsoft allow you to buy Full Digital games and Subscriptions from 3rd parties, Sony lock you to their store.
You even have to take out a subscription for the PS5 just for cloud saves, you don't pay for cloud saves on Xbox.
@Sifi you don’t want to know how little I’m paying…
I got it below £2.50 per month (I think £2.12?) until the end of 2024. (Got Xbox Live Gold for £25 per year x3 using VPN and then upgraded to GPU for £1)
However, that’s not the point. Even if it was 1p per month and they were taking away three games per month I would complain.
Why?
Because they took away a benefit I used to get. They lessened the service and we as customers should be allowed to complain about that.
I don’t know why people are so defensive of Xbox when they make a bad move. And it is a bad move. Microsoft is a multi trillion dollar company. They can do be better and be better and we as loyal fans and customers should expect better.
It really isn’t a lot to ask.
And yes, I still enjoy my PS+ subscription because they give me games. However, they upped the price which sucks. So I'm not so happy with them either. But Xbox also upped the price and I’ll never get that sub £2.50 price ever again because they changed the rules.
