So, we're almost a quarter of the way through 2022 already (how'd that happen?!), and in that time we've actually seen a fairly large number of great games release on Xbox, including a definite GOTY contender in the form of Elden Ring.
Other highlights so far this year have included the surprise Xbox Game Pass release Tunic, the long-awaited launch of Dying Light 2, arguably the best wrestling game in years in WWE 2K22, one of the most ambitious expansions ever in Assassin's Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarok, indie gems like Nobody Saves The World and OlliOlli World, and much, much more. It's been a really great start to 2022 when you think about it.
However, we know from past Talking Points here at Pure Xbox that a lot of members of the Xbox community simply don't buy many games anymore thanks to the brilliance of Xbox Game Pass, and a whole bunch of us are already knee deep in a backlog of games that stretches back to 2021 and much earlier in some cases.
With that said, then, we're interested to know how many games you've bought in 2022 so far. We've put together a poll below for you to vote in, and we're thinking the votes are going to be towards the small end rather than the larger one. Feel free to include games for other platforms if you want to, and tell us about them in the comments!
How many games have you bought in 2022 so far? Tell us down below.

I bought 2 - Bloodstained and Chorus. Everything else on Xbox i played from GamePass
not much of a good games on sale...
Grid legends, Horizon FW, Dying light 2, Gran Turismo 7, Shadow Warrior 3, Dysmantle, OlliOlli World, Grim Dawn...holy crap, I need to reign in my spending 🤪😂
2 games for me so far me Dying Light 2 and Horizon Forbidden West for the PS5
Just one for Xbox and none for Switch. Not that either have a shortage of games I want. Quite the opposite, in fact. It's just my backlog is way too huge. I still have Xbox 360 and Wii games I'm playing through!
Well yeah I might buy some items during this sale. However, I’ve only bought two games for the Switch this year.
DLC I’ve bought though this year for Xbox
Just the one but will be getting another one later. Got through a few on gamepass.
Elden Ring, Dying Light 2, and
Far Lone Sails and The Colonist (switch)
Absolutely none, Series x
Still slowing going through Halo I campaign. GPU
FH5 lots to do. GPU
Shadow of the tomb raider.Already owned years ago.
And that’s it’s, keep thinking about Elden Ring or Dying Light 2, shall wait for price reductions.
Switch Nothing.
PS5 HFW.
I have to spread my time so don’t get as much time as I used to.
More than I’ll finish
I’ve bought three, Pokemon Legends Arceus, Elden Ring and Horizon Forbidden West (which I haven’t started yet, waiting to finish the other two first).
I’ve also played Nobody Saves the World but that was on game pass not bought.
I kind of expected this year to be expensive game wise so at least this spending isn’t taking me by surprise. In the near future I’ll no doubt be buying a lot more like Tunic, Mario Strickers, Three Hopes, maybe Kirby and Forspoken… suppose you only live once right? (As far as we know anyways…)
I've bought 2. Elden Ring (first time pre-ordering a game in 19 years) and the Metro bundle.
Bought most on PS, pokemon and triangle strategy on switch, Starfield is my one for xbox this year
Far too many lol. I bought my first ever playstation console so bought some exclusives and games not released on Xbox like persona and such . Main game recently being horizon forbidden west which I finished. I preordered strangers of paradise and tiny tinas wonderland on my Xbox and ghostwire Tokyo on my ps5. My Xbox will still stay my go to console for third party but it has to share its time with my ps5 now
I love Game Pass
Games Purchased
Switch - 5
PS5 - 2
Series X - 0
Hours Played
Switch - 45
PS5 - 10
Series X - 200+
Six: The Witcher 2 (Xbox One), Shenmue I & II (Xbox One), Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Xbox One), Phoenix Wright: Dual Destinies (3DS), Phoenix Wright: Spirit of Justice (3DS) and Apollo Justice (3DS) - by the way, the last three I bought just now, in a Capcom sale on the 3DS eShop.
Given everything feels the need to be a 100+ hour experience now'a'days the number of game I purchase in general have sharply dropped.
I'm not spending money on games when they're being made in such a way I don't have time to play.
Elden Ring is the only thing I've bought since 2022 has started on Xbox.
Anything else I've gotten has been for VR.
The XBOX Series X is my 1st system outside Nintendo and it has been incredible so far.
I prefer physical copies of games, so I bought close to 60-70 from Xbox One/Series X.
I've played around 10 so far and am currently spending hours on Elden Ring, which is incredible.
Love Nintendo Switch, but it has become a system strictly for 1st party Nintendo games (Zelda, Metroid, etc.) especially when 3rd party games look and play so much better on XBOX and I get them right away without them being watered down on a weaker system.
There are around 16-20 games in the next year I'll be purchasing...I need more Time!!!!
5 so far, not many due to the extensive backlog from last year and ALL MIGHTY GAMEPASS:
Lots. Olli Olli World, WWE 2k22. A bunch of indie games and any rhythm games
Xbsx:
Elden ring
Gta v
Ps4:
Sifu
Absolutely nothing.
Gamepass is more than enough for me personally so I'm good. Kids bought Pokemon Sword but I'm trying to clean up some games before starting a new one. Elden Ring is on order from the library to give it a go. Maybe I'll pick it up if I get hooked on it but otherwise nothing planned to be purchased throughout the year.
Dying Light 2, Horizon Forbidden West, Far Cry 6, Pokemon Arceus, Sekiro. I put the most time into Sekiro and second would be Dying Light 2. My next pick up would be between Ghostwire Toyko, Elden Ring or Final Fantasy Stranger
I am probably going to cancel gamepass after this month. I have a massive backlog of physical and digital games that I haven't even touched yet (seriously like 100 xbox games). I haven't been very impressed with GP in 2022. Its seems like one big game per month and a bunch of indies. I would rather wait for a sale and pick a game of my choice for $20 or less than hope I like the next big GP game.
My subscription purge is almost complete. I got it down to gamepass and prime but leaning towards ditching both.
Your poll is going to be pointless in telling us how many Xbox games have been bought. Needs to be a poll specific for Xbox games - as many will be (as shown in comments) counting games they’ve bought on PS4/5.
I’d be really interested to know just how many still buy games on Xbox. I know I haven’t bought a single one when everything Xbox related I’m interested in comes to gamepass.
Not counting gifts I bought 17 games.
3 digital switch games. 14 physical games including 1 3ds game, 2 ds games, 1 xbox one game, 2 ps4 games, 2 ps3 games and 6 switch games.
Also 7 gifts for my birthday of which 6 where switch games and 1 was a psp game.
Also not counting these yet since they won’t arrive until next week but I ordered all 3ds FE games excluding the incredibly expensive fates revelations. So that’s another 4 games. So 28 games total.
I have bought 18 and most on Xbox. I have played one of them for about 5 hours. I have a problem.
Astral chain, paper Mario and Disney collection (updated) on Switch
First of the north star ps4
Oddworld new n tasty, jet set radio and something else I struggle to remember on Xbox
Mario kart DS, f zero GP legends and Mario kart super circuit on Wii u (as well as the remaining panorama view things I didn't get from my Nintendo)
But all I've played this year is Halo, Yakuza and Forza Horizon on game pass ðŸ˜ðŸ˜¨ðŸ˜‚
(And a bit of MKDS on Wii u)
Wow I’m surprised how few ya’ll buy! At 11 so far.
I don't wanna talk about it...
5 or 6, depending - Elden Ring twice (for PS5 and XSX - don't judge me, I have my reasons!), Sifu, Kena, Uncharted and Horizon
None at all. Plenty on Gamepass for me.
I still buy plenty of games with Gamepass. Think I'm on 5 for the Xbox just this year, bought 7 physical last year and a bunch digital. In 2022, I have a few for the 3DS too since that shop is closing down soon. Bought one game on the Switch.
I haven't purchased too many new games, still trying to clear out the backlog - somewhat successfully - since 2020. So far this year I bought:
Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut
Horizon Forbidden West
Pokemon Legends Arceus
Returnal
Spider-Man MM Ultimate Edition
Just some exclusives, really. Everything else I've played has been on Game Pass. Or old games I bought a long time ago.
On PS5 i’ve bought Gran Turismo 7, Sifu, Horizon Zero Dawn and Elden Ring, on Series X i bought WWE 2K22 an 1 year Game Pass Ultimate for £51.
I bought.....
nothing...
thank you gamepass
For my new series s I bought mostly BC games and playing new games on gamepass, I bought castlevania lord of shadow and sotn, panzer dragon orta, gears of war 2, and metal gear solid revengeance. For new games I only bought the division 2 when it's discounted.
First step is admitting you have a problem. Lol.
I’ve been much happier since I set a rule that I would only buy as many games as I finish.
The reality is I have hundreds, or more likely thousands, of games I’ll never ever play. Humble Bundles, GWG, PS+ etc. have all added far too many titles to my digital libraries. I was also guilty of buying games in the sales I would never get around to playing. It seems ridiculous but it had become a source of stress in my life.
I’ve also tried to prioritise the games I do play better by actually making a Top 20 ‘most want to play list’ and trying to stick to playing a game on it next as often as possible. This mostly works well but games leaving Game Pass still give me FOMO. (E.g. Do I play Narita Boy before it leaves on 31 March or skip it)
Though I answered the poll wrong I said 1-3 but on reflection there’s definitely a few I forgot like Uncharted collection upgrade and Cyberpunk. But still on track for finish one, buy one. In time I’d like to cut that further.
Just two, bought Dying Light 1 Platinum edition and Elden Ring (which I haven't even installed yet, saving that for this weekend).
Gamepass is the best value in gaming, I've got so much to play, played Tunic this week, which is fun, and tried Paradise Killer last night, which is a weird af game, but there's something about it that keeps me going, still finishing the last achievement in 'Nobody Saves the World' (which is basiscally playing the whole thing again, new game+), Infernax still playing that, FAR Changing tides almost done.... too much too play and too little time. Oh yeah GOTG which I started, also great, ME trilogy... sigh...
@themightyant Great rule, maybe something for me too, bought a lot last year which I haven't even started yet, I've always been a hoarder, scored a lot of physical (xbox one and 360 games) which look great on a shelf but I've yet got to put in the box, some I've already played but want to go back to.
But in 15 years when I retire I get to play them all and clear my backlog.... lol.. who am i kidding right.
Zero on Xbox, as its mainly for Games pass titles for me.
I have bought quite a lot on PS5 and few on Steam though as I usually prefer to play on those platforms and PS5 has released a few belters so far this year.
I'm sure it will all balance out by end of year, but I'm not seeing a lot coming to the Xbox which would tempt me to buy, so this year may be GP titles only for me.
@themightyant
I feel your situation.
Even when I know I cant get round to playing or completing a game, there's a lot of games I just want to own anyway. Its something I have had an issue with since the start of the business, in the days of megadrive and snes I had over 250 + carts at one point. No chance of playing them all. I've not changed much through the gens, but I'm a little more controlled now, and even I realise I cant have them all anymore
I cant even claim I'm saving them up for a rainy day - I'm digital only, so play in first couple of years or all bets are off, lol.
My poor wife has long understood she married someone with an addiction problem - but when she married me I was a dev working on Dungeon Keeper 2 at Bullfrog, so she knew what she was getting!
@themightyant that's a great rule, and so true!
I have far more than I'll ever want to play.
I've had the same feeling too, that something that was supposed to be for leisure now feels like a burden. I've taken to putting consoles away for a while and taking them out when I want to use them.
0 on the Xbox technically. For us l, really no point in purchasing anything with Gamepass being a thing, just doesn't make sense to.
On all systems only 4 thus far in 2022.
Including on the PS5, I guessed at between 10-19, though truthfully, I have no idea...
Edit: I'm currently playing Horizon Forbidden West (only about 120 hours in!) but I pre-ordered that in 2021, so not sure whether that counts...
I've bought between 10 and 20 with about half of those paid for with Microsoft reward points and most i got in sales only game I've paid full price for was Horizon.
I've bought around 7 so far. I used to buy a lot more, but it's too much of a gamble that it could appear on GamePass within a week. Plus my backlog is becoming Big Data, so I really need to chip away at it before adding anything.
None. I loaded up the backlog at black friday pretty heavily, though, so I still have so much to get through.
Looks like I'll have about 4 games to buy on Switch, soon, though. First Switch purchases in, like 2 years, with maybe 2 sale exceptions.
Well, I split the cost of Pokemon Legends: Arceus with my nephew, bought Triangle Strategy for $10 off MSRP at launch, snagged XCOM 2 for $3 on Steam, and played Elden Ring for free via Steam family sharing.
Most games this year so far have been from store sales. Still have many games on my wishlist waiting to appear on sales.
I am patient, it will happen.
Some have even made it to game pass so need to purchase. Guardians of the Galaxy for example.
Game Pass has cut down on my game purchases. I've bought HFW and Elden Ring. But between GP and EGS giveaways I have so many unplayed games I don't see the point of spending more than my £15 GP most months. I think I must have 500 games across XSX, PS and PC that I have not played. I'm old and I've come to the concussion this backlog is going to the grave with me. I'm probably not going to get into HFW now with so much new stuff coming all the time and that's £65 down the crapper. I'm going to stop buying games for a few years and try and make do with GP and backlog. I'll probably fail and impulse buy a load more but its getting silly at this point.
