Well, Microsoft's 2025 Xbox Developer Direct announcement is here, with the company planning to detail four upcoming titles set to grace Xbox Series X|S this year. However, while we know what three of those games will be, Microsoft is being very secretive about its fourth title; the event will see Xbox "visit a surprise location to see another studio’s brand-new game".
So, folks, what do we think this mysterious fourth game could be? Prior to the announcement (and afterwards, in some circles), we've seen speculation that Virtuos' rumoured Oblivion remake could be that final title - but we're now hearing otherwise. Extas1s — a well-known leaker in the Xbox world — claims to know that the fourth Dev Direct title will not be this new version of The Elder Scrolls IV.
If that ends up being the case, and Oblivion doesn't make an appearance, where does that leave us? Well, to be honest, there are so many options from Team Xbox that it's hard to name them all. Could it be Halo Studios' rumoured Combat Evolved remake or Rare's Everwild like we mentioned in our initial news post? How about something like Gears of War: E-Day or Fable; two titles that also could launch this year? At this point, who knows?
Another, perhaps left-field choice, could be 'Quake 6'. If you cast your mind back to last year's Developer Direct, Bethesda did tease such a thing during the team's in-depth look at Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. However, with today's announcement saying that this fourth reveal will see Xbox "visit a surprise location", this seems unlikely - given that Quake developer id Software will already feature in full force during its showcase of DOOM: The Dark Ages.
Beyond what we've mentioned so far, it feels a little bit like picking names out of a hat. Clockwork Revolution, Perfect Dark, State of Decay 3, The Outer Worlds 2 - one of these could easily take the fourth and final slot at Xbox Developer Direct. Whatever is being planned over at Microsoft HQ, we don't have long to wait - Xbox Dev Direct 2025 takes place two weeks today on January 23rd.
What game do you think will take Xbox's mystery 4th slot here? Throw your ideas into the comments section down below.

I'd love to see Everwild..but an Oblivion remake would do nicely!
I hope it's something from Double Fine. We haven't had anything from them since Psychonauts 2.
@Jewfro_Wizard Ooh I forgot about Double Fine. That would be awesome.
I’m thinking if they’re saying it’s a “brand-new game”, they’re talking about something that hasn’t even been announced. Just my 2 cents.
New Banjo Kazooie 3d platform game.
Yes please, release 2025.
Hexic 3, featuring native 4K and 120fps
Surprise location makes me think Forza Horizon 6 (they do the reveal in the country where the game takes place) but surely Microsoft would save Forza Horizon 6 for next gen if there is actually a next gen.
I'd love it if the unannounced game were either the long rumoured Gears of War: The Marcus Fenix Trilogy, or GoW Tactics 2. Either of those would pretty much make my year, but I'd take Judas, Perfect Dark 2 or Clockwork Revolution as an alternative*.
*begrudgingly... 😂
@OldGamer999 a lot of games and ideas I could throw out but at the end of the day a new , proper Banjo is the only correct answer
Greenberg described it as a "surprise unannounced game". That should disqualify gears 0, everwild, fable, silksong, perfect dark, etc.
I'm hoping it's double fine's next game or the next forza horizon.
Team Cherry... silksong shadow drop. It's a new year, that means all expectations are reset, right... RIGHT? 🤣
I expect it to be an already announced third party title.
And it's unlikely to be a shadow drop if it's a new game. As much as fans and critics enjoyed Hi-Fi Rush I don't think the shadow drop did it any favours and some of the devs even spoke out against it.
Crackdown 4 or Gears Tactics 2 would be pleasing.
How about Halo Tactics?
My money is on Double Fine.
@Divide_and_Wander I would love it to be a Silksong shadow drop. I’m on vacation the week after the Direct and I would 100% be down for that.
For what I think it really is, I get the suspicion that it’s probably something to do with Halo, though does Combat Evolved really need another remake? It sort of feels like the Halo series has backed itself into a corner and may rely on a remake to reboot the series, so it may have success again. Honestly, I know Battle Royales are a bit passé now, but Halo is the series I wanted to try that.
I have a feeling it’s a first party title and something that Xbox deems to be exciting enough to be a bigger showstopper than Doom. There’s not many things that can compete with that one with the Xbox fanbase. Having it be in a surprise location though… Contraband springs to mind, though is that one a show stopper? It’s based in exotic locales. Who knows? Most Xbox Game Studios are located in a similar area across the West Coast of North America, outside Rare and Mojang (and Playground, but we know they’re working on Fable). Could finally be Everwild. Would be really wild to find out Mojang has been cooking up something of more substance than a continuous stream of Minecraft updates or spin-off games. I don’t think it will be Perfect Dark. It has to be something that has been off the radar for a while or unannounced. Would be bizarre, given the mystery, for it to be Gears or Fable, as much as those are games in the tier to close out a showcase. I do think a new Banjo game would light the internet on fire more than anything else in a positive way, but everyone at Xbox had basically said it wasn’t being made at this point. Would be a huge surprise if that was all a smokescreen and why Everwild has taken forever, as Rare is busy with multiple projects.
But imagine if it’s Fallout… Now I’m delirious, my bad!
Imagine if it’s finally the Activision drop… I’d be disappointed, but a lot of people would be excited.
I've seen rumours that a new Banjo game is in the works, @OldGamer999. So you're wish may yet be fulfilled...
@somnambulance - While i wouldnt hate it, im mostly joking about Silksong. We all know it doesn't exist.🤣
More realistically, it could be an official Black Myth Wukong update, or something from Square Enix. Last year, Square Enix was a surprise guest at the direct, so maybe FFVII remake news and/or more GP announcements/shadow drop goodness?
Speculation is fun.
@Fiendish-Beaver
Maybe Playtronic or toys for bob?
For Banjo.
They don't mention it being an Xbox, ABK or Zenimax studio. My money's on something third-party. Let's say from... Square Enix.
@Fiendish-Beaver aww please make it the Gears Fenix Collection Microsoft 🥲🥲
Hopefully the rumours are true and it's an oblivion remake playing that again with up to date graphics would be great especially after the disappointment that was started!
@Divide_and_Wander Jeez, if it’s Wukong or FF, that’d be a huge disappointment for me. I didn’t even think that Xbox would do another “We’re late to the party, but get excited” announcement. It’d be on brand this generation, but, man… Say it ain’t so! I’m really hoping this is the year Xbox stands out by finally delivering with their first party studios!
Toys for Bob would be my guess, @OldGamer999...
Spyro, banjo or fh6 from tokyo please i'm hoping it isn't oblivion remake or FF7 really not interested in these
@Fiendish-Beaver
Probably nothing, but all UK.
Currys, Smyths toys and Argos still not restocked Xbox consoles.
Currys have zero s or x.
Smyths toys no online and nearly all stores no stock.
Argos getting lower each day for online delivery.
I find this very strange.
Also Smyths toys were saying new stock to be confirmed for 2025.
Now it says absolutely nothing about new stock.
This is no accident from a trillion dollar company.
I know I’m very skeptical but it is what it is.
@Fiendish-Beaver
Now that is concerning.
Game UK have no series s stock
Series x one model lower than 10 left in stock
Something is going on.
@Fiendish-Beaver
Even Amazon UK have zero series x stock
Delivery Feb to March 2025.
Ducking the console we love getting absolutely no love and promotion and no stock from the company that own the Xbox.
No wonder the Xbox console has no chance when the competition have stock in all stores ready for you to pick up or order on line
I just give up with them I really do.
It’s The Behemoth with Castle Crashers II.
Since the way it was written in the Doom article, leads me to think it’s from that studio so as much as i have been wrong and waiting i might as well be wrong again and say it’s the Quake Reboot! Gears of War Collection and a Quake reboot is my 2 most wanted games on Xbox and they could be pipe dreams for all i know. But there is some bread crumbs to follow on them so i won’t stop dreaming!
I think it's going to be double fine, and its going to be the two unanounced games they were suppose to have revealed last developer direct.
Oblivion wouldn’t exactly qualify as a “brand new” game either, as much as I desperately want it.
2026 for oblivion would make more sense, if it exists, being the original games 20th anniversary
Can confirm it’s none of the titles speculated in the article or comments. People will be pleasantly surprised and in my opinion, excited about this new title.
Forza Horizon 6 sin duda....
