Avowed's early access launch is right around the corner at the time of writing (be sure to check out our full Avowed release times guide for all the details you need), and that means the reviews are also set to drop in the very near future.
Before we get to that point though, let's do a little prediction poll! There's obviously no way of knowing what kind of scores to expect from Avowed, but we can at least provide some basic guesses based on what's been shown off so far.
As you can see in that story above, a lot of the early previews for Avowed were very positive, so we're hoping it's going to land somewhere around the 8/10 or 9/10 mark for most reviewers, and anything more would be a bonus.
There are definitely some Xbox fans out there who are expecting 7/10s at best though - the ones who don't seem particularly impressed with what they've seen to date. There's even the worst-case scenario of 4s and 5s, for example!
So, it's time to guess - we're going to base the poll off what you think the Metacritic average will be when all's said and done. This takes even critic's review score on the platform into account and creates an overall rating.
What's Your Prediction For Avowed's Metacritic Average? (1,577 votes)
- 91-100
- 86-90
- 81-85
- 76-80
- 71-75
- 66-70
- 61-65
- 51-60
- 41-500.3%
- 31-400.3%
- 30 or lower
What did you pick in the poll and why? Let us know down in the comments section below.

It feels like a mid-80s kind of game, albeit I'm a massive fantasy RPG fan so it'll be more like a 90 to me. But I hope that it gets high 80s, because I love everything that obsidian have put out
With or without Xbox taxes? I just hope it's good and lots of people enjoy it. I'm curious about it since the first trailer.
We best keep an eye on the pure Xbox review after Indy 🤣
From a quick cursory search, Obsidian's games (on Opencritic) have scored anywhere between 78 and 89. I reckon Avowed will settle on 81-85.
I'll be happy if it's around The Outer Worlds (85) but I think it might just beat it, if it releases in a good state, else just below. All the previews look great and I have high hopes for this one. Regardless of the scores I suspect it's going to be right up my street.
80-85. And that’s fine for it. Developer has admitted it has some jank in there, hence why I think it will be good, but flawed.
After things like Indy being goty worthy, the notion of ‘Xbox’ tax (which has always been nonsense) is gone.
I’ll be there day 5 smashing away at it until wilds.
76-80 at best, though what I have seen thus far had me opt for 71-75. I don't have much faith, truth be told. I don't think it will be another Redfall, but I don't think it will be that much better. It might look prettier, so that's something, I guess...

Wouldn't like to guess right now it could be an amazing game or another starfield like flop I hope it's good though but you never know 🤷
I predict 82 on meta...on another note there really are to many games... especially for people who work and have family etc ..I've barely touched Kingdom come deliverance 2...and Avowed is to similar of a game for me to be playing both at the same time ...then there's the new like a dragon I wanted to play ...did kinda want to try that Citizen sleeper 2 aswell .....arghhhhh
Also I just rented Madison vr ..which I probably will just send back at this rate lol
Once again, Xbox Tax is not a thing. Its just a convienient excuse when games don't land in the 90's
I see this being low to mid eighties which is still a good score, but won't set the world alight
Guessing here without playing the game seems a pretty silly endeavour? I guess the previews give us some insight..
We can all talk about what we hope for, but that's all anyone can do at this point. I'm hoping for a good 9/10 game, but even a 8/10 will be a win for me, as I want to like this game, it's a style of game I often resonate with. Hell I'd play it still if it were getting 5 or 6.....
Whatever it gets, I hope we can have sensible discussions about it without resorting to silly conspiracy theories....
Right around 80. 78-82
Mid-80's and will become beloved later.
@Titntin the internet is built on conspiracy theories.
For some reason, I’m expecting it to land either at 81 or 83. I’d love to see it critically top Indy though.
I have a feeling it will be handed many indirect comparisons to KCD2 that don’t necessarily compare the gameplay or anything beyond the scope and size of it being and RPG.
@IronMan30 That's true enough...especially in these days 😒👍
@Banjo- Xbox tax was very real but seems to have disappeared when everyone realized everything is going to playstation. On the opposite end of a tax, this game is going to get the same bump in score that games like Concord and Veilguard got. When the "anti-woke" agitators (or whatever you want to call them) go after a game, much of the games media inflates the review scores for that game to make sure everyone sees them as not part of that crowd. Based on what I saw in Skillup's preview this is looking like a very solid game that's going to take a lot of people by surprise.
My way too specific prediction is day 1 89, settling to an eventual 85.
Please be great! 🤞🏻
@Banjo-
With or without Xbox taxes?
That depends, on very rare occasions XGS developers do manage to circumvent the dreaded tax😉. Personally, I'm going 86-90 as a huge Obsidian fan but will play the heck out of it irrespective of scores😁.
@OldGamer999 Right. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is a 10/10 game for many. That shows how debatable and subjective reviews are, because they're one person's opinion. They have always been, but now they seem more subjective than ever before. It's crazy to think that some user reviews, those not written with trolling purposes, are often more descriptive and accurate.
@Sol4ris Not always and not by everyone, but it's absolutely obvious that some games tend to be reviewed (and be rewarded) more favourably than others. What counts as negative counts as positive depending on publisher, exclusivity or platform, literally, hence the Xbox tax term that everyone has heard of for years.
This game is one of those I have no idea if I'll like, but it will be on Game Pass, so I'll happily play it on Series X. I hope that you and everyone looking forward to it will enjoy it. 😁
PS: I know that Redfall is not a masterpiece and it's actually quite shallow in terms of gameplay, but I had a blast when I played it. I don't know if it's because of the patches or because some people love to exaggerate how bad certain games are... I also know that its launch was rough, but didn't play it until recently. I'd rate it 7/10.
I am hoping for 89 but think it will settle in the low 80’s. There needs to be a better rating system than believing in a score created by any group of reviewers. Got to take into account factors that are all subjective and how you are feeling at the moment.
This game is going to be bad if the developers are too focused on making sure the game is diverse and focused on how the rainbow community reacts. If the game developers displayed they focused on gameplay and story and stay true to the lore of pillars of eternity it will be an epic game. I have faith in obsidian rpgs and I love for single player rpgs. I hope Avowed knocks it out of the park. If this game has a similar focus as Dragon Age Veilguard... Well we know what happened to that blunder of a game. Let go of the staff, lay offs and massive budget cuts due to lack of purchases and budgets goals not meet.
Without the Xbox tax maybe around 80 but with it probably higher, like 85-90.
But that ***** is just that, *****. I’ll be playing it for myself and form my own opinion!
It's an Xbox game, so of course it'll be somewhere in the mid-70s. A like for like PS title would definitely score a 93, win Best Game at the Game Awards and receive a standing ovation from Kojima himself via X/Twitter.
79-82. Which is fine with me.
I'm betting 8-10. The only issue with this game is that it has a stigma attached to it so no matter what happens, that's gunna loom. It's Obsidian though, and they rarely miss the mark.
I think OW2 will be more like 85+. First one was decent and it only lacked some polishing and more scale
@Ricky-Spanish Exactly, quite pointless trying to guess at this point. Could be a Starfield or God forbid a Redfall...
Between 80-85, and probably a 9/10 for me. Starfield is an 83/84 and that landed as a 9/10 for me too.
@Banjo-
Yeah I guess with reviews it’s all bout personal opinion.
Anyway review embargo lifts tomorrow and I must resist the early access for £17.99 on my GPU 🤣
I hope for Obsidian that it will be a high score but that would create a real timing dilemma because I'm still early in KCD2. But looking forward to my steel book version
@swedetrap does that go for Indiana jones, hellblade 2, black ops 6, and starfield I don’t remember those games getting mid 70’s but I remember concord being a ps game and that was 62
@GoldenPants Hopefully it will be good but I'm waiting to play first before rating it🤷
I really don't care. I'll play it anyways. 😂
@Prestige-worldwide Is your sarcasm meter broken or did you just not have one to begin with?
It will get review bombed until it arrives on PlayStation.
i just bought avowed premium edition of 100 euros, yes i know the game is in the game pass and yes i have ultimate but i have ultimate purely for my kids i cant wait until tomorrow when i can play avowed
It's not just the scores, though. It's also the awards. It's something that has been happening for years, with a few exceptions. From a popular website,
This is pure arrogance and unconscious self-contradiction, because those enthusiasts that look down on Xbox games believe that they represent the gaming community to the extent that they completely disregard the rest of the enthusiasts (sales and/or number of players) and the journalists that review Xbox games more favourably.
As a side note (meaning that this is funny rather than important and can be done by a single person), someone edits the pages to make sure that all multiplatform games list platform like this, "for PlayStation 5, Windows PC and Series X|S", even games published by Xbox. Why putting Windows PC in the middle between PlayStation (first) and Xbox (last), isn't that jarring? If they are sorting by popularity, shouldn't be Windows PC first? And don't worry "enthusiasts", because if there is a Stadia version, Xbox still is last because, well, Stadia is obviously more important than both Microsoft gaming platforms!
I hope on good reviews
@ banjo- 😂😂😂 have you never thought that Wikipedia lists the consoles in alphabetical order so it’s not putting Xbox last out of spite
@mac_da_man
Without the Xbox tax maybe around 80 but with it probably higher, like 85-90
That review taxation method doesn't apply to Xbox though.....😅
Removed - unconstructive
@Jonnyfalcon Maybe you are right and that's the reason and it's all a coincidence, but that part is not as important as the first half. I just find very funny listing consoles, streaming platforms and PC in that order: a console, PC, a streaming platform and a same-gen console. It's absurd. The alphabetical order you defend is also not consistent:
But, like I said, this is anecdotical, Wikipedia can be edited by one single person. The important part is the first part. This side note was just for laughs (and you laughed). 😊
My guess for the past couple of months has been 85. That's in range of Obsidian's other games.
@Sol4ris
I guess we can wait and see as it’ll probably end up on other consoles as well. Which means if the Xbox tax is a real thing it should have the lowest metacritic score on Xbox.
@FraserG Will you folks be shooting up a rev?
@PsBoxSwitchOwner
"Reading these comments I’m going to need a new tinfoil hat. Jesus"
Spare a thought for those in conflict zones, you'll be fine.
Mid 80’s. It will be good but not great.
@mac_da_man
Indeed, I'm eagerly awaiting for hell not to freeze over if it happens.
Removed - flaming/arguing
I predict 71-75 solely on all the Xbox haters out there.
Look at all these comments. I love this site. Brilliant idea for an article. Get us all talking. No other gaming site really does this, and if they do, the comments are 75% toxic. That said, I'm really looking forward to this game. I guess 80%, but I hope it's higher.
If you don’t think scores are subjective then I present you Civilization 7 - the reviews are all over the place depending your perspective….
@Kaloudz Yes, we'll have a review ASAP 👍
I really hope this turns out well. Veilguard tried to be a Dragon Age knockoff and failed miserably. Let's keep our fingers crossed that Avowed doesn't follow the same disastrous path.
@old-dad you mean like The Outer Worlds: Skyrim edition?
@Blastfemur I prefered Outer Worlds over Skyrim lol. Just a solid romp in the Pillars universe is all I'm expecting.
Call me a pessimist but I predict it WOULD be an 8/10 game, but it will launch broken and will need extensive fixing. I just have this feeling......
Easy 10, 9 with Xbox tax. Anything under 9 is obviously just hating the game because its another insane exclusive for Xbox, or might be also bought review by Sony trying to sabotage release of the game. Cannot wait to play this!
Definitely 81-85. Very interested to read the soon incoming reviews!
A 54 score or 60
@Banjo- just wanted to chime in that there is (or was) an Xbox Tax 100%. It’s not about conspiracy theories. The main example being that once you have Geoff Keighley elected king of the industry he immediately taxes Xbox. The man is a straight up Playstation fanboy. He tweets constantly about the positive Playstation news and the “negative” Xbox news. If anyone doubts it watch him announce Genshin Impact for Xbox. He just mumbles it like hes upset about it. Plus as you mention the board; even companies like Kinda Funny would agree that they skew blue; and they are on the award board.
And the review scores definitely include a tax because most reviewers have a Playstation bias. It can be denied over and over but it’s a fact. Even if they don’t state it (though Metro’s Hi-Fi Rush review almost blew their cover).
@PsBoxSwitchOwner I think you need to upgrade it to a complete set of Tinfoil Armour with the level of absurdity going on about Xbox taxes.
Clearly every reviewer, including the reviewers right here at PX, are part of some global conspiracy to knock 2 points off every xbox review score. Even Wikipedia are in on the action now 😂
No mater what the reviews say, the beauty is that it is on Game Pass and you can easily make up your own mind.
@Ilyn yeah did you not know, we all have a meeting beforehand of a release. Decide who’s giving the score and who’s editing the wiki. And it’s decided who is being paid off too.
It’s like their favourite plastic box can’t be criticised - and most of the time it’s ‘adults’ that are defending everything.
Every company can be criticised there’s nothing wrong with that.
