It's been a good week for Xbox Game Pass with five games added to the service, and one of them was a total surprise in the form of Dead Island 2! The game wasn't announced ahead of time, but landed on XGP this past Thursday.
So, we know it's early days, but we're interested to hear how you've been getting on with the latest entry in this popular series. Dead Island 2 was notorious for being stuck in development hell for multiple years (pretty much a decade in fact), but the final product seemed to get a fairly good reception when it arrived in April of 2023.
Here at Pure Xbox, we gave the game a "Good" 7/10 rating and concluded it was "definitely worth a play if you're looking for a lighthearted zombie romp on Xbox", and there's definitely the case now that it's on Game Pass. But what about you? Have you been enjoying it so far, or has it let you down compared to past entries in the series?
Tell us your thoughts on Dead Island 2 in the poll and comments section down below.

So far so good. Only about an hr in. I'm actually playing as I type this. Not the safest thing to do when the city is overrun by flesh eating creatures!
I'm enjoying it but the lack of reflection in mirrors and glass is a little bit jarring and keeps ruining the emersion.
Not my cup of tea but maybe I'll try it on Cloud so I don't have to install it.
Just tying it right now about two hours in
Seems good so far for fun.
Was on my wishlist for a long Time, didn't expect this to release on game pass. Graphics in general are good but the hairs are not well done. But I like it , gory, funny and not too hard at least for the beginning.
I've already played it on PS5 but I've downloaded it again and about 6 hours in it's still just as fun as the first time.
@Chaotic_Neutral Because you're a vampire that was on your way to the annual vampire convention before the plane crashes.
It is pretty good and does not try to be anything more than it is which I appreciate. Much better than the garbage that is Dying Light 2.
Does anybody know if you need to of played the first one before playing the second game? I think I saw the first one was on sale. Might pick that up before trying this one.
@Chaotic_Neutral Haha how did you enjoy gaming before realistic reflections you poor soul
Handy enjoyable funny game so far not to big gald it's not full open world otherwise I wouldn't of touched it
It’s a good game. Great graphics but gameplay isn’t on par with Dying Light, which is an older game. I’m enjoying it for what it is, though. 7/10 from me.
Love the game. I played it last year when it came out. The end boss is far too difficult though. Kinda ruined it for me from being near perfect.
@Romans12 I'm a couple hours in now. Is it me or are there some odd difficulty spikes with too many enemies in one place at times. Like more than enough to keep up with? I don't mind walking through the streets and beating a few here and there. But when you're surrounded with a crap weapon, you're screwed. Not to mention, if you don't know where a work bench is you're done if your weapons are broke. Happened to me twice now.
I want to like it, very much enjoying the characters, but I’m not sure the gameplay is for me.
Was free last weekend…….. why is this a suprise? Was ok what i played, just not a news story ffs
Very happy to see it come to GP as I have wanted to play it very badly but wasn't sure if I'd enjoy it as much as 1 and Riptide.
@GrumpyDev You have to look up and climb if it's the part I am thinking of.
As an American it has been a blast to play as Dani(Irish?), her voice actor is fantastic, seriously she is really good!
The game is just really fun
@EvilSilentFrame in the early game there is some reference to the first, but I don't think you need to have played it, from what I've seen. The plot seems self contained, from first couple hours
It's like if Dead Island was good!
I'm on those who purchased it day one so for me theres currently Nothing on gamepass i already owns all the big titles so yea i'm kind of meh and waiting for a new day and date title.
Having the ability to dodge gated behind a special ability is some bull****.
@RentedPanda thank you. Good to know. I appreciate it!
Ive kinda been waiting to play this title so the addition is great, even though its timing is clearly to help mitigate the fellings of some of those who were upset by titles released on another platform. Im not upset in the slightest, but I appreciate any treats they wish to give us as a counterbalance and intend to resub to gp later in the month as a result - if I can clear some of the other games cluttering my 'to play list'.
Gp continues to feed its fans pretty good!
@CallMeDuraSouka Her voice acting accent is about an 8/10 for me not the worst ive heard in game meaning to be Irish but never any Dubs accents in any game is a sin
@NintendoByNature It's not just you, I found that to be true as well. There were times when I just ran away because I was getting overwhelmed. I understand that the developers probably were promoting co-op, but there should be some type of balance. Or maybe a single-player campaign and a separate co-op campaign. Your character is always about two levels below an enemy, which I don't like (Diablo 4 style leveling). I much prefer Elden Ring's leveling style - if an enemy is owning you, go level up and come back to own the enemy.
@Romans12 ok glad it's not just me. Some parts In the hotel early on were frustrating due to 12+ enemies and little to no weapons
Eh they should leave the zombies to resident evil.
@eire-shabba I figured the VA was actually Irish, cause if she's doing an accent it's even better.
@EvilSilentFrame This is just my opinion. But the first "2" dead island games are absolute, total horrendous, garbage. You spend more time looking for items to repair your broken weapons than actually playing the game.
Now dead island 2 is VASTLY superior in EVERY way and a real joy to play. Even the breaking weapons (a game mechanic I completely detest in every way possible) is not that bad.
Quit playing zelda breath of wild due to breaking weapons. Just hate that. Really need repeat it million times, hate that weapon breaking mechanic sooooo much.
@hbkay It's a surprise since free weekend games not often make it to game pass the following week.
Actually think never have, ever, until this game.
@CallMeDuraSouka Yep. She is hilarious as feck in the game.
@GrumpyDev as you are bleeding out you have to find the med kit.
@GuyinPA75 ah I see. Yes I’m not a fan of weapons breaking either. Especially when it’s weapons that don’t make much sense breaking. Breath of the Wild was a good game, but once I no longer have the stick as a weapon, my swords and axes shouldn’t be breaking.
I didn’t mind the weapons breaking as much in Dead Rising. I still am not a fan of breaking weapons but there’s so many in that game, I could quickly find a new one. Plus it forced me to find some new ones that were sometimes humorous.
I’ll give Dead Island 2 a try after I’m done with my Tomb Raider remasters. If the first Dead Island is still cheap, I’ll try it just to get an idea of what the first one was, but I’m really curious out this second one. Thank you for letting me know!
@GuyinPA75 Her sarcasm is brilliantly written, agreed she's hilarious!
@Chaotic_Neutral Thank you, I decided to play this game and every time I pass by a mirror, or do something completely unrealistic like make an electral connection with a trail of water, I have a good chuckle at this comment.
