When we reviewed Split Fiction here at Pure Xbox earlier in the week, we mentioned in the conclusion section that it was surely going to be a Game of the Year contender, and that's ultimately proved to be the case already.
It's now the highest-rated title of 2025 on Metacritic across all platforms, racking up an extremely impressive average score of 91, and the full game went live on the Xbox Store back on Thursday for those who want to buy it.
As a reminder, here's a bit of what we had to say about Split Fiction in our review:
"Split Fiction raises the bar for co-op adventure games and will surely be in the 'Game of the Year' conversation come the end of 2025. Its increased difficulty will put some players off, but those who relish the challenge will discover a magnificently varied, inventive and ambitious gameplay journey that's bound to stick long in the memory."
We're sure that plenty of Pure Xbox readers will have picked up this game already — especially considering it's a lower-priced title with a discount for Xbox Game Pass members — but if not, there's still a way you can try it for free!
The Friend's Pass, which is designed to allow a second person to play online with you (across any platform), also includes a free trial of Split Fiction's opening moments, meaning you can sample it right now if you want to.
So, regardless of whether you've bought the game or you're just checking out the free trial, we're keen to hear what you think of Split Fiction so far down in the poll and comments below. Do you like it as much as us? Come tell us!

Gameplay is solid as a platformer, graphics are great, and the transitions between gameplay and cutscene are flawless. Really enjoying it so far! Minor gripe, and it's not much of one, but due to it being a two player game, they're aren't many areas where it seems appropriate to pause or take a break from? No option to save from the menu, so have to wait for an auto save, but again, very minor!
@fraserG you accidentally set the poll to multi answer 🫣
Unless you’re being inclusive to Two-Face and hive minds, but I don’t think they’re real.
I say I'd love this if I had someone to do couch co-op with my daughter plays Xbox but is still to young only wants to play Roblox now I'll add this to our list alone with it takes two and a way out ha
I bought my physical copy(not Game Pass discount) and played a bit with my wife. So far it's awesome.
So I’ve started playing today and we got to the end of the second main chapter - about 4-5 hours in. It’s really good so far and it seems to just be getting better as it goes along. The gameplay is great fun and I like the variety in the side stories, they really help to keep the pacing on point by keeping things fresh. The visuals are splendid and performance silky smooth. I’m enjoying the narrative and the humour is up my alley - it’s made me chuckle and smile multiple times. So far it’s every bit as good as It Takes Two. Loving it!
@Nintendo4Sonic Same, we finished It Takes Two last year and are both loving this one even more
Xbox Game of the Year!!
@Zandy sounds great, I'm looking forward to the next session.
The only reason it's not a 10/10 game is because it takes two set the bar too high.
We’ve reached the start of the final level (presumably, as I got an achievement saying I had completed all side stories in the level we finished last night). Wow this game is simply fantastic. It’s even better than It Takes Two, somehow. The creativity and variety is just off the charts. And we still have the final level to go which all the reviews I read/watched were raving about! This game deserves every bit of those positive reviews and ratings. This is easily a GOTY contender for sure.
Thanks everyone who has left their views here!
There's nothing quite like 1st hand testimony from real players to get an idea of a games merit, and it seems like this well deserves its plaudits
I really look forward to playing this with the misses, but we both have large backlogs, so I might wait till its a little cheaper.
I was wrong, we were not at the final level. Which is great because that just means there is more of this amazing game to play! 😁 If you see the achievement for finishing all side stories and feel sad because you assume the game is almost over, don’t fret as there is still a surprising amount of content left! I find myself counting down the hours before I can play again this evening (why must today be a workday boo!)
Alright, final update, we did it - we finished the game. Yes it’s a masterpiece. Absolutely 100% worth experiencing. 10/10 from me. So many great moments throughout and the final level didn’t disappoint! I love this game.
