It's been an exciting week for Alan Wake fans, with the very first gameplay trailer being unveiled for Alan Wake 2 alongside a release date of October 17th - and that's got us reminiscing about the original game here at Pure Xbox.
Of course, unlike the sequel, Alan Wake was an Xbox 360 exclusive back in the day, releasing for just one platform in 2010 before eventually crossing over to PC in 2012 and then more consoles with the Remastered version in 2021.
It's been well over a decade since Remedy Entertainment's beloved psychological action thriller made its debut, and people are still talking about it extremely fondly to this day. The question is though, what score would you give it overall?
Is it a masterpiece in your eyes, or has it been overrated over the years? Let us know down in the poll below.

I haven't played it yet. Never had an Xbox before my Series S.
I have already bought it but haven't got around to play it. Looks really good though.
I'll be playing the 360 original in case anyone's interested.
Same here, I haven't got around to play it, but it's on the list
9. It's still very good. I try to replay it every couple years.
The sequel comes out on my b-day this year so I might have to pay full price for once.
Solid 8/10. Played the remaster recently and enjoyed it. Big fan of Remedy.
I'm going with an 8. The story was absolutely fantastic and i believe chapter/act 3 was amazing. But the last chapter kinda went downhill after that for me personally.
I’d give it an 8.
I never played the OG (though friend let me borrow for 5 years), but bought the remaster last year in prep for #2 cause I was curious what all the hype was about. I beat the game and told my friend “how did I not play this for so long? Such a good game, can’t wait for #2!”
I think I liked it so much because you didn’t have to worry about resource mgmt, which I think is why I’ve never been able to enjoy Resident Evil.
I think a little bit of a product of its time and latter levels do start to feel a little long in the tooth, but still a solid game overall.
Since the option isn't there, it's an 8.5 😅. Think the weakest part of the game is the general gameplay and shooting.
But the storytelling, world building, characters and tone of the game is 10/10 and just the usual excellence from Remedy.
Back in 2010, I gave it my personal GotY nod and gave the game a 10/10 at release. The game has aged, as most games of that era have, like milk a little bit. The remaster was disappointing in that it was a clunky reskin, and, thus, emphasized the dated mechanics of the game. The original arguably plays better with the FPS boost. Even if I see the cracks now, I’d call it a personal 10, objective 7.
It's a 9 for me and the last good Remedy game. The formula became stale after that.
I have never played the game but head a lot of fuz about it. I know there was a remaster but wanted to ask: I know there is a separate entry, American Nightmare, is that part of the canon?
Might sit down and play through the games at some point (unlikely this year) and curious if I should also play that or just ignore it.
I think I just suck at it because I've never made it through it and I've been working on it for years. I'll pick it up every once in awhile and maybe get a little further and then get stuck again. It's just really hard and the flashlight thing is the reason. I think I'll pick up the remaster and see if it's easier. If I have to rate it based on how much I've played it I'd give it an 8. It's really good, I'm just no good at it. I'm sure my rating would increase once I finish it, if I ever do. I just read the comment about the remaster, so I guess I will stick to the 360 version.
I finally played through it fully last year(the remaster) and I would say it's a 6.5 out of 10 for me, gameplay was very 2010 in a bad way but pretty much everything else was pretty good.
One of Remedy's weaker games, I'd say.
Despite this, I'm looking forward to the sequel a lot.
@Tharsman American Nightmare is an arcade game with Alan Wake in it. Score based shooting and very addictive but very light on story. I'd rate it 10/10 for what it is.
It's a definite 8. Played it purely for fun as my wife had done the 1000 on it before I played it. The bit where your at the rock gig trying to defend the stage for your friend from the darkness, whilst he pumps out heavy metal and the lights is awesome. I do think the story isn't the best now, but it's good. Yeah an 8
I really enjoyed playing this when it came out and the unique mechanics of it too.
@Amigator what!? Control is fantastic 🥲
Did anyone play the DLC’s? I really didn’t like them.
Coming on the heels of Max Payne (which is a bona-fide classic and top tier story) Alan Wake had its work cut out from remedy, even post release of Control. I personally dont think Remedy have developed a game as good as Max Payne - at their particular release dates (it's obviously aged now).
As others have mentioned the flashlight shooting does wear thin but it's a fine game all the same. Worth pottering through. 8/10.
@Fenbops Really? I got bored and closed it after the Director Override or something like that. If it gets better I could try again.
One of my all time favourite games - narrative wise at least.
Such a shame I won't be buying the sequel though. Digital only is a d*** move too great to ignore. (Especially after control ult edition & the guff surrounding that on release.)
Still an 8. I loved the narration and the idea that he was writing the game as it was happening.
Personally a 5. Maybe a 6 at best. It was originally painted as an homage to Twin Peaks and it wasn't that at all really. Deadly Premonition hit much closer to the mark - and was a more interesting game because of it. It had a then current celebrity attached to it. Alan Wake was a fine game - but largely forgettable.
Hard one to score. In terms of gameplay 5/10. But the atmosphere, world building are top tier and to a lesser extent the story. Probably a 7/10 but it's got something about it that is memorable and that unique Remedy magic so perhaps an 8.
But it's one of my least favourite Remedy games.
