We're doing something a little bit different for the usual Pick One feature this weekend! As we're fast approaching the end of the year — and therefore the end of Xbox's 20th year — we're interested to know what your favourite Xbox console has been over the past two decades and why.
If you were reading Pure Xbox back in mid-2020, you may remember that we did a similar poll for this prior to the launch of the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, in which the Xbox 360 came out on top with a whopping 44% of the vote.
Much has changed since then, however, and the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S have both got off to flying starts. There's every chance one of them might take the crown here, although perhaps as a collective rather than individually.
So, which is your favourite Xbox console to date? Let us know down in the poll and the comments below.

To me, the Original XB was MS's hope for gamers to a new world of online gaming, 360 was an amazing console. XBO was kind of a let down after 360. But XSX and XSS is restoring my hope that MS has learned from mistakes and is now in overdrive.
I had some amazing memories of the 360, it’s one of my favorite generation consoles, but got to say RROD is a big issue with that gen, and Kinect might had been successful but it resulted on the end of the generation to be a whimper instead of a bang.
Hardware wise, I got to say the Series X is my favorite Xbox console so far. The Xbox One X model might beat it only based on how compact and silent it was without sacrificing power.
If I judge on the games: 360
If I judge on the overall hardware: One X
If I judge on raw horse power: Series X
For contrast: my favorite PS is easy: PS2
My favorite Nintendo: GameCube.
My favorite Sega: Dreamcast
Side note: I feel Microsoft biggest mistake for last gen might actually not be the forced Kinect, nor even the always online (although both were death worthy mistakes) but not allowing devs to make Xbox One X-exclusive games. Nintendo allowed devs to make software that was exclusive for New 3DS for instance, and it didn’t mean the old base was abandoned, just that a few impossible games got to be made exclusively for that hardware.
Xbox Series X
It plays games from all of them so is allowing me to not only experience the best of the current generation, but also relive the nostalgia of the past.
I haven't had the series S long enough to enjoy what xbox has to offer but I did have the 360 for a while and enjoyed quite a few JRPG's back in the day on it
Series S, the only xbox I've had. Have been a PC gamer only since the PS1 and love the Series S for what it is and also the cost-benefit. Low entry cost + gamepass rocks.
Til I get a series x, I'm sticking with the series s. It helps that it has a buttload of games, from the past, to the present. Although, the one thing I do miss from older generations, is the ability to upload music to the console and have it play your songs in games.
Series X for me. Each console before had its Positives and took gaming to new progressive levels and the Series X has benefited from Years of console development and the 'mistakes' they made along the way too, so for me, its the best.
Its not that it 'just' plays all those games via Backwards Compatibility, its that a LOT of those also benefit from stable Frame Rates running on better hardware, but also added Auto HDR, Double Frame rates, Higher Resolutions & better Anisotropic Filtering too...
Defo loving my series X but there is something perfect about the original 360 excluding RROD and graphic chip meltdowns
@Medic_Alert I bought more games for PS4 than any console before it but mostly because the alternatives where not that appealing (Xbox one vcr and Wii U)
PS4 was the winner by default, not by knockout, for that generation. In my book, anyways.
I pick my favorite consoles from each maker based on “peaking point” I guess the main reason I have trouble picking an Xbox is because I feel it still has not met that peak point.
Switch I didn’t list because I feel is closer to a handheld than a console, and a such I would list it among the handheld lineup. It would be peak handheld there, IMO, and doubt any further iteration will blast past it in the same way. Before it I would had considered the GameBoy Advance SP to be “Peak Nintendo Handheld.”
I can see many Nintendo fans seeing SNES as Nintendo peak and Europe specially (but not exclusively) seeing Genesis/Megadrive as peak Sega.
Xbox series is just a continuation rather than a new console tbh. I think that's the way Microsoft will play it for future generations as well.
As for a favourite, I don't really have one, the consoles aren't really different enough to bother picking. Unlike Nintendo consoles that differ wildly from one generation to the next.
First time on xbox as a long nintendo fan. And this thing is amazing.
I am not for the raw power or for the gamepass etc. I am here because after the xbox one failure other companies would have give up. But after that and all the back stories i saw on the xbox documentary. Gave to me hope that no matter the cost. Microsoft will be there for the gamers. Even if that is costly enough, microsoft will back me up.
For that and only.
Hope to have a great generation. Happy hollydays averyone.
Have to pick OG. Mainly because of the amazing communities back then, when online gaming was in it's infancy. Met so many great people through PGR2 and Ninja Gaiden Black (via the MS games forums), many of whom I'm still in regular contact with after 20 years.
I am a big fan of the new Xbox Series X I have a ps5 too, from a technical viewpoint, they both meet my expectations. 1440@60 is more than sufficient for me, if I was building a pc I wouldn't be aiming much higher.
However, Game Pass just makes it the best console out there, and Microsofts last batch of exclusives have all been amazing. Flight Simulator, Psychonauts 2, Halo, Forza. And Deathloop was apparently great, but I haven't played that yet.
Let's not discount the Series S though, for £250 that's quite frankly a miracle of engineering.
The Xbox 360 is my favorite..
Series X!! X360 was good, but complications such as RROD ruined it for me. To me Series X is the near perfect console. This comes from a guy who started playing video games since NES. All in all, SNES, Mega Drive, PS2, and Series X are the best consoles ever made. In my opinion Series X is the first MS true entry into the consoles Hall of Fame, first MS perfect console.
360 just edging out the X... but only just (for now).
I expect X to overtake in the next couple of years if the good games keep coming.
Series X is new and while it's off to a great start (one of the best first years a console, not just Xbox, has had) and is a terrific backwards compatible machine, I want to see how its own library of games ends up before ranking it. I do already enjoy it more than I ever did the X1, however.
Out of the other consoles, it's pretty easy.
1. Xbox 360
2. Xbox
3. Xbox One
The 360 is a top 5 console all-time and was for most of that gen my primary platform. Thinking of pretty much any genre (light gun games aside, which have sadly disappeared), even JRPGs, the 360 had gamers covered. Had the best exclusive FPS in the Halos, best TPS in Gears of War, Forza topped the whole racing genre, had hidden gems like Condemned: Criminal Origins, one of the best day one games ever... Just a great time period for the Xbox brand. The original had some great stuff as well. Halo 1 and Dead or Alive 3 were a heck of a way to kick off a new console launch and it brought some franchises to consoles that may have been PC exclusive otherwise. The X1 is a pretty distant third but it did have one of my favorite Insomniac releases in Sunset Overdrive.
For memories over the course of the generation 360 hands down. But in terms of hardware Series X is hard to beat. If it keeps up this tempo of good releases the 360 will have competition in a few years
The OG Xbox, One X and Series consoles are and were good but the Xbox 360 was hands down the best for me.
I have go to by the games as games make a console.
So the Xbox360 by a mile at the moment.
The xbox glory days.
Xbox series s because its my first and the best so far
The original had Fable, Jade Empire and Jet Set Radio Future.
The OG Xbox because is introduced me to Halo. It’s the reason I bought it over the PS2. And it was totally the right decision! I loved my 360 S and my One X. But the Original is still my favorite. I’m still on the hunt for a series X so maybe it will edge it out but we will see.
This is tough decision
Original Xbox I loved because of the exclusives like Halo, Kotor, Jade Empire. Not to mention how easy they are to mod to make the ultimate retro gaming machine. I have one modded and one unmodded.
Xbox 360 has a soft spot in my heart as it's the console that got me back into gaming after a long hiatus. Not only that though, it had a great online structure in XBL great exclusives and games ran better on it then PS3 and it's was cheaper too.
Xbox Series X is off to a great start and is a beast of a machine. Gamepass too is an awesome deal. There are so many games that I normally wouldn't have played if I had to pay $60+ for them. Plus the ability to play most Xbox, 360 and Xbox One games on it too. The future looks bright for the Series X.
So yeah such a hard decision....
Definitely my series S. Its light, portable, unlimited games with gamepass, very powerful and looks great. I have been thrilled with it.
@Tharsman @Medic_Alert have to say I'd go exactly the same as @Mesic_Alert for other consoles.
Series X for MS by a long way. PS2 was a million times better than Xbox1 while the 360 just broke for me so I wasn't very happy with it for obvious reasons. PS4 was just an incredible generation both games and machine wise while I feel Series X gen is the first time MS have a machine that can hold its head up and potentially compete although think buying the companies to take games away from Sony will be the defining factor this generation and may result in Sony having to do the same thing eventually.
Microsoft: OG Xbox
Playstation: PS1
Nintendo: N64
Sega: Dreamcast
I've owned all of them. But the biggest 1st impression was the 360. It was absolutely mind blowing. I got perfect dark zero and pray with it and it was absolutely incredible.
In terms of which one I think the best is.... series x. Back compatible, powerful and consumer friendly ( using one controllers etc... ). Plus gamepass this generation means I really think microsoft have smashed it this generation
Had them all (Not sure why One X is listed as just a One enhanced) and the OG is my favourite.
My Series X, so far is a ? As sure the best way to play loads of games, but it has nothing that makes it special IMO at the moment maybe in a few years when we've had Hellblade II, Fable, Starfield, ESO VI, Avowed my answer will change.
360 still for me but Series X/S gaining fast, especially with the Gamepass and xCloud offerings.
@TuckNorris85 250 quid but it promotes a digital only view. Which is wrong, gamers should always be able to play a disc or collect a disc copy. Like they have done for 30 years
I own 2 X1S, 1 XSS & 1 XSX (both new gen consoles are still boxed up and brand new). However I'm still exclusively playing ONLY on my X1S. Call it nostalgia, call it fear of making the leap of faith, yet my old, trusted Xbox One S is my to-go-to platform for everyday gaming. Things will change in 2022. ❤
Series X for me. Had the OG Xbox but I didn't buy it myself and didn't stick with Xbox after so clearly it wasn't too impactful on me. But the series x is amazing and with gamepass has brought me back into the fold
Never owned an original xbox but I've played the games I wanted to.
Play the wife's x1 for the exclusives but it wasn't enough compared to ps4.
Don't own a series x yet but will get one this year.
And the 360 still gets regular use. One of the best consoles ever
My favorite console as far as performance and capability is concerned would obviously be the newest - series X, but to solely judge it off that would only ever favour the latest hardware.
If I was to judge it by playability and library size though, it would have to be the 360. That to me was the golden era of gaming where the quality of releases was still achievable by small time developers, giving us much more selection when it comes to games. These days only major studios can afford to develop on console and most the game selection are just recycling each other's ideas anyway. I find it hard to imagine consoles ever having the variety of games that they used to and I miss the days when there was almost always a new game to get stuck into.
For my experience: X360 slim/flat, One X and Series X (not used so much to judge).
My first Xbox console was the least popular: Xbox One. Series X is my favourite console of all time with the best hardware, best controller (even more the Xbox Elite Series 2), hundreds of games optimised for it or at least for Xbox One X and the free backwards compatibility working flawlessly. My only complain about Microsoft is no new Banjo-Kazooie and no Viva Piñata since the 360 days but after being a Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft customer, my conclusion is that Microsoft is the best.
My favourite Nintendo console is a difficult choice, it could be SNES, N64 or GameCube for different reasons: games, 3D discovery and 3D awe. Wii U is Nintendo's Greatest Hits console and I still play it. Same for 3DS, it's Nintendo's Portable Greatest Hits console and I still enjoy it.
My only PS console is PS4 and my favourite Sony exclusive is Wipeout Omega Collection.
Games make the console in my view. Xbox 360 for that reason wins so far. However, once the Series X really hits its stride it could topple it easily if it produces the games... Time will tell, it certainly has the potential.
Series X for me. I never had a 360 as when it launched I was training for a new career and skint, ended up going Wii then PS3. Original Xbox is a system I maybe didn’t appreciate. I had one and liked it but looking back it’s underestimated by many, including me. Xbox One S and X were really good systems once BC was up and running, but Series X just nails everything. It’s powerful, fast, has tons and tons of great games. That and Switch are really pushing my PS5 out of the picture
Only ever owned two. The 360 and XSX. If I had to make one complaint about the XSX (and this issue is shared with the previous model) the download speeds are a joke. I can download 48MB on my PC but the XSX can only manage about a 3rd of that. It used to be far faster months ago but it's gotten worse lately. Before any one says, yes I do realise about exiting the resume function but I don't have many installed on my system and not using resume and it's still slow. Only thing I hate!
My favourite is Xbox series S
Tough call. 360 was so far ahead of its time in terms of its interface, early social features (UNO!) and games. I have so many amazing memories of playing it all night long and marveling at how far MS had come in such a short time. That said, I've gotta go with the Series X (or S) because it plays nearly everything I care about across 4 generations. No other console has ever done such thing and it makes Xbox such a PC-but-friendly experience.
Honestly, I am going to be the odd man out here and say the Xbox One X, I guess like I'm one of those crazy people who actually loved the HDMI pass-through feature. It just makes a perfect companion for a cable box, and the X enhanced games have always been great looking.
I should say 360 but I'm gonna say Series S . Got an X too, so gave the S to one of my sons, the other one has a dedicated games pc, and the one I gave an S to was saving up for a gaming pc too, but then the chipshortage hit , crazy prices for dedicated graphics cards put that on hold. He's really into the S now, and seeing how it performs, running the Matrix Awakens UE5 tech demo without any issues, and how small it is, it's a real marvel of engineering.
@JaYJ Love(d) the one x too, it's now the perfect dedicated media machine for my wife.
Greatest memories? OG Xbox. The best for all that it offers? Series X. Skipped the Xbox One. 360 generation (including PS3) was the generation of gaming I abandoned the most.
Weeks ago i would have said XSS but now (since i have bought a 4K TV...), I say One X.
