When Phil Spencer announced back in late 2019 that the next Xbox console would be known as the "Series X", it immediately sparked conversations over whether the naming convention had become too confusing. After all, we already had the Xbox One S and Xbox One X, and by late 2020 we also had the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
Over time those conversations inevitably died down, but it's clear that even in 2024, there's still plenty of confusion surrounding this topic. A couple of notable examples come via the Amazon reviews of EA Sports College Football 25:
Amazon Reviewer: "This is not a review of the game itself because we couldn't play. Xbox One S (or X) is not equal to Xbox Series S (or X). We bought this thinking S worked, but that was not specific enough research apparently. Our fault, but what an absolutely horrible naming convention. And they don't make it easy to find out the model you have either."
Amazon Reviewer: "I have an Xbox one x….. I did research and says the x|s and ones can use series x games and it doesn’t even allow me to play. It says it is not compatible and you can’t even return the item because once you open the packaging it’s no good and considered used….. waited sooo long for this game and used to play the old ones just to find out I spent $75 on a game I can’t play."
This is far from the first time we've spotted comments along these lines. Have a browse on the Xbox Store and you'll find "reviews" from disappointed Xbox One users who wanted to play the latest Series X|S games, but simply didn't understand the naming convention. Of course, you could argue that people should research these things more thoroughly - but you could also argue that giving the "X" and "S" monikers to multiple consoles is asking for trouble.
It doesn't help when certain games have multiple editions that make things difficult for the buyer...
Anyway, we thought this provided a good opportunity to get your thoughts on Xbox's naming convention in 2024 and how "confusing" and even "horrible" the Series X and Series S names have proven to be. Do you think Microsoft should have opted for something different, or are you perfectly happy with the decision that was made a few years ago?

That’s entirely on them. It’s not that confusing.
The CoD boxes are really bad though.
Absolutely agree. Terrible and confusing names. Imagine being a grandparent trying to purchase an Xbox for Christmas. It's ridiculous. Good luck purchasing the correct console.
@WhiteRabbit in an alternate universe we would’ve been living happier lives with the Xbox 720.
When Microsoft first announced the names, I had a feeling people would be confused - especially if they are not completely on the up-and-up on gaming.
Considering generations are no longer a thing, I think the names make pretty good sense. I imagine the idea was to release successive iterations of hardware under "Series S and X" so that it was always clear which was a high-end machine and which was a budget one.
Has to be said that the way Sony do it with the PlayStation is way, way better than Microsoft and Xbox. PlayStation is simple to understand; you know exactly what generation you are looking at, and the Pro iteration is easy to follow too.
Microsoft added still further to the confusion by introducing an S rather than simply having a digital Series X, as PlayStation have done with the PS5 digital.
I would really appreciate it if Microsoft admitted that they were making things confusing, and so revert to numbers for the next Xbox, and literally calling it the Xbox 6. You have to wonder how many people have skipped the Xbox simply because they didn't know which one to get (I'm thinking parents here, not gamers)...
I think we don't have a Xbox 1, 2, 3... and so fort, because the Playstation brand started before, so for a consumer and business perspective is tricky to compare, let's say, a Xbox 4 with a Playstation 5 even if they are the same generation console.
the "5" number will shine making it looks better.
therefore the Xbox names...
I'm totally fine with their Series brand and I understand the difference between X and S but don't take it for granted: most adult parents are still a bit confused.
I wonder what will the use for the next generation.
Before having my first Xbox (a Series S) I almost bought a One S thinking they were the same thing.
After a little researching there were no more problems.
But yeah, not the best naming.
I thought after Xbox one, they would have gone Xbox two, like Sony do.
Will be interesting what Nintendo call their next console.
We all think sensible, Switch 2.
But you never know with these companies that probably spend hundreds of thousands of money on marketing and naming ideas.
I really like the "series" naming scheme. That said, they should have named the xbox one consoles family under the "series" moniker instead. Having "one" and "series" console families makes everything too confusing
It doesn’t have to be this hard. Most major tech/product companies I can think of use some sort of numbering system to easily identify generations of a product, sometimes combined with letters or other differentiators.
Phones (Apple, Samsung, Google etc.) Computer parts (Intel, AMD, Nvidia) many cars (Volvo, BMW, etc) it’s an easily understood system. I just don’t understand why Microsoft doesn’t do the same.
It's confusing and terrible. They've never had a good console gen name once IMO. 360 is ok, I guess, but still weird.
Terrible naming. I've been in gaming for almost 30 years and I don't see myself as "average" user, but my wife plays only occasionally and almost bought One S instead of Series S. So it's not just grandpas getting confused. Same color palette and look doesn't help.
@Pabpictu It makes sense the first time around, when there's just a single S and a single X.
But once the new consoles come along, the high-end machine (e.g., Xbox One X) then turns into a low-end/budget option, and now players are getting either the budget experience or finding out that they can't play at all... despite having the premium "X" edition.
It is a bad naming choice.
There has to be something simpler even if you don’t want to use a number.
But well we know already that MS suck at advertising in the console space.
some people are idiots... see Wii U
Xbox.
Xbox 360.
Xbox One.
Xbox One S
Xbox One X
Xbox Series S
Xbox Series X
Yeah, TOTALLY don’t see how anyone could be confused by that utterly consistent and logical naming scheme…
It's not surprising considering how the Wii/Wii U thing lingered longer than the console did
They're terrible and confusing! I would name the next gen as Xbox 6 (even though it would be the 5th) or go for something different than numbers that could follow a logical sequence.
I think they are fine but I don't really know what the perspective would be like from a casual or new gamer.
I wouldn't be surprised if they start attaching a year to them. I think they are ditching the firm generations soon.
Series X2026
Series X2026slim or whatever refresh variant
Series X2030
Etc.
How two different names series s/X can confuse anyone is beyond me it's not the hard to remember a series with a s is the white and X is the black one doesn't take a rocket scientist to work that out honestly!
Honestly, it all began with the 360. The didn't want their second console to appear inferior to the PS3 so instead of simply calling it "Xbox 2" they called it "Xbox 360". Their official reason was something along the lines that it was an "all encompassing machine surrounding the user with 360 degrees of entertainment". Really they just wanted a '3' in the name and also a bigger number than PlayStation 3. Then they flipped the script and called their next system "Xbox One" - which makes absolutely zero sense considering it was their 3rd console. Again the reason being it was "The One system to rule your living room" yadda, yadda. Then "Xbox One S", and "Xbox One X", then "Xbox Series S" and "Xbox Series X". Not too tough to follow for those of us who pay super close attention to the gaming industry, but Hella confusing for parents and casuals for sure.
This could have all been avoided if Microsoft got over itself back in 2005 and just named the Xbox 360... the Xbox 2.
While I agree that the names are terrible, people too confused to figure it out probably shouldn't have access that that amount of cash.
Well let’s be sort of grateful we have the Xbox hardware whatever it’s called. As it maybe the last full home full power Xbox console hardware we get, as we know it today.
I bet it if is the last Xbox hardware forever there would be a potential sales increase and demand for the series s and x consoles as they come to production wind down.
@Pigrotto idk… Do any body think the Samsung Galaxy phone are superior to iPhone cause it the S24 instead of the S14? or that the the red magic 8 pro is inferior to the iPhone 15?
Xbox would have been fine going with a number.
The next console should be Xbox 6. Has a nice ring to it and makes it sound at the same level as the inevitable PS6.
It’s really not that confusing.
I see people on the daily that think the Xbox One is the original Xbox because of the name.
Microsoft really screwed up the naming as far back as last gen minimum.
@AverageGamer probably you are right. I was only sharing some, possibly, consideration about the names.
The names genuinely suck. More impressive than that, this happened after the poorly named Xbox ONE.... their third console, which itself caused issues. You think they'd have learned that free lesson in not (expletive)ing the bed from Nintendo with Wii U, but not only did they ignore it-- they doubled down on it next generation reusing names of models from their last gen. Brilliant display of hubris.
Xbox eternally makes things harder for itself at every turn. Maybe they like it that way.
Adding to my last comment, if you want causal people to keep up, you can't drown them in stupid naming conventions. Keep it simple, you don't have to make the next system "Xbox 5" , but a name for the console that is simple and clearly stands out from the older consoles is all it takes. Xbox Glueshoe for all it matters. Casuals don't have a lot of patience or want to unravel a mystery of what your console names mean.
"What is the difference between One X and Series X...?" - you've likely already lost them.
The people who are confused are the same people with slow internet…
@__jamiie but it's not gonna be Xbox's 5th console generation.
I can "kinda" understand it from a competition/marketing point, as Playstation will be in their 6th console iteration, and the "bigger number=better" mentality will affect the buying decision of most casual buyers (which let's be honest, are the majority) but i find it not only misleading but also stupid to not call it Xbox 5 and instead call it Xbox 6 (tbh, even calling it Xbox 5 is kinda ridiculous considering the fact that they've never properly named their consoles after the original Xbox. They have dug a whole they can't get out of).
That's my 2 cents on this story though.
I myself am looking forward to the next generation Xbox 365 SX. It's supposed to be 50% more powerful than the rumored Xbox Series One XS. Shame it's digital only but it's still a great value with the day 1 games on Game Pass for $15, and it's such a great system since the games are compatible with the Xbox X1 handheld!
I can't believe people are still confused about this. Now Playstation, that's confusing. PSX, PS2, PS3, PS4, PS5...how are you supposed to know which one to buy? There only difference is a number, there's no way to know which one is which!
@WhiteRabbit You missed the Xbox DOne.
If you look at the reviews for just about anything, you're gonna find some hilarious idiots.
Just last week I was buying a TTRPG supplement book on weapons, and there was a guy complaining that it's not a full game.
Another example is that for every single wired controller there are people complaining that they charged it fully but can't get it to work.
My favorite as of late though has to be the complaint that the manga book they ordered was printed upside down.
All kidding aside though, I can't tell if this is a mistake or done on purpose. Has anyone seen the new Intel naming scheme? It's like it was designed by Xbox. To make it simpler for consumers, instead of 3 families, Core i5, Core i7, Core i9 (+Celeron/Pentium for budget) they're splitting it into SIX families and removing the i, Core 5, Core 7, Core 9 + Core Ultra 5, Core Ultra 7, Core Ultra 9. Then they're ending the Celeron and Pentium names and rebranding all the trash chips "Intel Processor". So, where does a Core 9, and a Core Ultra 5 line up? Does anyone actually know? If Ultra is better, but there's 3 tiers of each, where does one meet the other?
On top of that they're removing the generation from the branding, so you don't know what generation it is from the product name without reading the exact part number and checking on their website.
Why are they doing this? "To make it simpler for consumers."
Why are they REALLY doing this? So they can build frankenchips out of old dies and not have to say they're old, while their large builder partners (HP, Dell, Lenovo etc) can sell ancient chips at full price in prebuilds to unsuspecting consumers. "It's got a Core 7 in it! (From 2012.) $350 please."
@ChopstickPhilly They could get away with it by including the Series S.
Xbox
Xbox 360
Xbox One
Xbox Series S
Xbox Series X
Or the rumoured new handheld.
The main reason they didn't go with "Xbox 2" back in 2005 is because they would have seemed to have been a gen behind the PlayStation 3. In fact, the original name they were going to release with was Xenon.
People laugh, but bad naming conventions are a real thing, and companies need to be aware of this problem.
Personally, "Xbox One", and "Series X|S" were horrible choices, and someone deserved to get fired over that.
They should have just picked a completely different name like "Xbox Alpha" or "Xbox Cypher", etc.. You get my point; something completely different and unique to any Xbox naming scheme beforehand.
@Ricky-Spanish but clearly you are confused.
Because the article is about people getting the Series consoles mixed up with the previous generation consoles of the One X etc.
Not a series S with an X
@__jamiie Right, and then they couldn't call the next system Xbox 4 alongside PS4, cause Xbone was the third iteration.
... Actually maybe they could have, just look at Windows jumping from 8 > 10. 🤔 🤣
Okay, MS should just call the next one "Xbox 6". Problem solved. 😂
Yeah apart from the first one, they've always had crap names. the 2nd one was 360? the third one was called one? LOL way to go morons. The xbox naming has always been the worst aspect of the company.
The eggs box series egg.
This console in the post Peter Moore era has had worse marketing than Harvey Weinstein. It's a huge part of why its market share is in the abysmal state that it's in and not enough fingers are pointed in that direction.
Think of me what you will, but I consider myself a gamer who pays attention, and when I first bought my Series S, I bought a peripheral, I don't recall what (I think a charger of some sort) but it turned out I got the One S version, had to return it. So I vote confusing.
@EVIL-C Stranger things have happened than Xbox 6. The more you say it the better it sounds.
@Jenkinss Peter Moore was a marketing genius. The fact that he was able to steer the ship through the RROD and there still be a brand ready for the next gen was amazing.
@EVIL-C Xbox 1.1 - Done!

They should take a page from Sega naming, like the Saturn, and go with Uranus. The free publicity they would get...
It kills me when people say “this makes sense to me” and “XYZ is more confusing.” Because to fans of XYZ, that makes perfect sense too.
Part of our job in brand and product marketing is making all of this as easy as possible for the widest audience possible. Xbox could call the console “poop on a stick” it wouldn’t matter for most here; brand loyalists and educated hobbyists would be there day one. But game console success isn’t defined by selling to the hardcore fans — it’s about widening the pool and making new fans/selling to casual audiences.
In that regard, the Xbox Series name was an unforced error.
Xbox should get done for bad naming. There should be a law to make things simple.
Yes, still the worst. There’s no way to explain the name to parents or little kids. And you should be able to do both easily if you want to sell an entertainment product. What does ‘xbox’ mean? What does ‘series’ mean and what does the X and S stand for? Still no idea. We also saw it with the Wii U. (What does the U even mean and is it an upgrade or an addon?!)
Playstation is easy. And 5 > 4. Marketing done. Also, Nintendo Switch is perfect. Brand + feature as one name.
Why didn’t they name it Xbox Two X and Xbox Two S? Would’ve been way easier.
It all started with the xbox one. Worst name for a console ever. I bet they thought they were so smart at that boardroom. Instead of having a number before Playstation, lets make it even lower.
Next gen should be called the Series Evolved Xbox, or SEXbox for short.
I don't particularly like the names or the naming convention when considered in total. However, I don't have much confidence in anyone who would be "confused" by them. Cars have models that are close and people have phone numbers that are close. If you can't differentiate than god help you.
Some of the project codenames have been better than the actual console names.
Xbox Scorpio for example - cool and bad ass!
@Markatron84 agreed! For as much as i love the Xbox 360, i never cared much for the name and they only got worse after that. We should be on Xbox 4 and PS5. I mean for as much as i like Nintendo i don’t love their names either most of the time.
Next gen - X6ox 👌
I’ll admit they arent the greatest names, but actually being confused by them?? Not even a little. Then again, with the average IQ and common sense that I see on a daily basis, it’s not surprising that some people would.
Except that the S now comes in black too, @Ricky-Spanish, and the X comes in white also...
@Friendly
My kids have had absolutely no problem understanding the different console names for Xbox the last 2 generations running. Like zero. They knew the differences even before I did. Kids are smart as F*** when it comes to this stuff, way ahead of where we were at their age back in the day.
@Plonky get out 🤣
If they launch a portable Xbox before the next generation, they could definitely call the next main console the Xbox 6.
Obviously for gamers in the loop like us it seems obvious. But for the people that barely play video games and want to buy one after a long time… it’s pretty confusing. Yes, they should’ve researched it before buying but the naming convention is still dumb.
@Gabrielmpf They’ll call it the XBox Edition Series X One or something like that. Because MS.
they really shot themselves in the foot calling it xbox360. it’s a sick name but at what cost ?? a decade later of confusing consoles ? 😂
The shape doesn't matter if names are what people pay attention to. If not names design which as Series S/X look different are they same product line to average people or buy a bootleg console.
Went no best/fine. COD/other series names confuse me more. One S/X, Series S/X, Max, etc. Better words to use/differences. Elite/Arcade I think worked better.
But they understand EA Sports FC? Then Fifa?
Intel names have been hmm. Reading 13K & each number being a series/power/etc. like hexcode or other IT factors.
What average person can tell a PS or Home button, power output, screen/slimness of a PSP 1000 or 2000/3000 like we can. XD
SNES maybe then NES, but 3DS, 3D Land/3D World, Wii U (U logo, Gamepad, long console that's rounded then box and small, from a distance/both together image), One, Series.
Sure iPhone people can tell enough of the different models maybe or just buy the best one and others will go for the other models based on their needs (or just use whatever of the same one for years then upgrade when need be).
Thing I find is how can people tell between phones they all look the same, oh right by brand name and just upgrade to whatever when need be gotcha...
Sigh 360/One as both entertainment names, what idiot named it that.
Best distinct was the Kinect/360 name/cases I think the purple was nice. Yeah country voice accents or colour/design. Maybe best 32GB Wii U was only in Japan.
People not in the know, those that don't ask enough questions about consoles see the design/name yeah. Just by name sounds or name formatting is bad. PSP/Vita are different from 1-5. Switch is good and works with the logic/Joycon above to slide in during marketing photos.
One/Series the whole logic of that was always stupid of symbolism for gaming/other entertainment services as a name, that's not convincing or understandable to most people, most people don't get that meaning or care. Creatives/engineers and average people understand names/value of things differently.
If 720/something simpler we wouldn't have this problem. Nintendo & Sega among others had distinct names sometimes. GameCube marketing that was a problem than name. Or handhelds just were more easy to get for kids & the Gameboy design is simple but effective.
That or whatever ends up on talk shows that people will notice/talk up a product/if they see ads on TV/streaming services.
Kinect was the best name besides Surface I think Microsoft has named devices. One/Series being their worst.
Stop having a marketing team that wants to be cute with symbolism the average customers doesn't get the creative/passion meaning of because the engineers/marketers want to make it sound meaningful when doesn't translate to customers besides us gamers that pay more attention to names, series, subtitle formatting of words and make it simple not stupid.
Xbox family, series as a subname....... one as a subname.... I mean of Battlefield 1...... COD. Madden 25 for 14 and Madden 25.... year gaps/remembering.
For spoken comedy/then visual comedy (too a degree) (talking/going to get food, toilet or whatever else watch 'WATCHING') it's been more clear to me how people focus on things, simple words not always the visuals (unless action scene) or other detailed factors of words. Maybe Police Squad just wasn't funny to people not just missing background/core viewing angle of characters/too much visual information. Like Incredibles 1 Mickey symbol/other Easter eggs in films/games.
Regardless the names of each console are garbage with 0 thought to be honest and whoever decided on the names should go to school for marketing
@TheSimulator what could they have called future xboxes after the 360 though?
It would have been fine if they'd gone for a less generic word than 'Series'.
Actually much of the problem is the way MS wants to refer to the Series Xbox. MS insisting on calling it, Xbox Series X/S rather than just shorting it to Series Xbox. If MS stopped calling it Xbox Series X/S and just said Series Xbox it would make more sense.
The names are bad, I almost think they made them confusing on purpose.
They could have stuck with the '360' naming scheme. 360, 720, 1080 (where we are now), 1440 (the next one that no one will buy because they are burning their brand to the ground), 1800, and so on...if the consoles were good and popular, people would have liked the names, which is what happened with the 360.
The last Xbox generation should be named Xbox Series One S | X.
Since the beginning knowledge of game consoles has been needed to make the desired correct purchase. For gamers that has been relatively easy to a point. That point being the name of a console does not identify new or lost features of one generation compared to another generation.
Xbox has too many X's and S's. What would any slim or mid gen upgrade be called this generation? Series X-S for a slim X, a Series S-S for a slim S, and Series X+X for a more powerful mid gen X? Then next Gen could be an XX with an XX-S for a slim XX?
Just call next gen XBOX 6 or XB6 and make it simple to identify generation along with the PS6
@NEStalgia @__jamiie Let's just go with a naming scheme that appeals to all our basic instincts, while still able to stand on par with Sony, and crown the next console the S6XBOX. 😎 😉
@NoCode23 "S6XBOX" is all one needs in their life, lolol. 😉🤣
Should have just went roman numbers and called it Xbox V.
@EVIL-C There's always the XS Xbox. Like what they send to the liquidator, the XS ones.
I still think the NL mod Eel had the best name. The Xbox SEries X. XSeX. They'd be number one 😂
@NEStalgia 🤣🤣🤣 I think we have a winning name! Too perfect! 👏😂
@PsBoxSwitchOwner people mix there hand for there foot these days it's disgraceful where's the intelligence?
Not the best, but why peoples are confused?
It seems the 'S' and 'X' is the confusing part because its not that hard to know Xbox One was last gen hardware and Xbox Series is the new Generation hardware.
That being said, the 'S/X' aspect from Last gen though was used to denote the 'entry' tier that may not offer Performance modes and run at a lower resolution with the 'X' being the one built for 4k. That has carried through to this gen.
Xbox Series S/X is also Compatible with Xbox One S/X games too. However, Series S is all digital meaning its not compatible with Physical media. So if you bought a XB1 game it will work on the new consoles with the Series S getting One S modes/performance and the Series X getting any One X enhancements.
The 'S' and the 'X' in this denote the 'status' of the hardware - the lower Spec S versus higher spec X. That also relates back to the 'prior' Gen too and the Series S is back Compat with the One S - it doesn't get any of the 'One X' enhanced features.
We are nearly 4yrs into this Generation and if people with 'Xbox One' consoles are confused by 'Xbox Series' ONLY releases, then maybe they should consider upgrading as more and more games will not release on that hardware. The S/X isn't really the important part of the Name, its the 'generation' name that is - Xbox One or Xbox Series - S/X just determines the Spec and how 'back compatible' games will function - Series S gets XB1S versions, whilst Series X gets XB1X versions...
I don't think 'Series' is the best name for a Console but Xbox One (the 3rd Xbox Gen) wasn't any better.
Whilst I genuinely think that Xbox 6 is the right name for the next system, I've been inspired to think of some alternatives.
Xbox-ish
Xbox One 2

Xbox 3000

Some of these are brilliant.
It's really not that confusing. People surprise me with their stupidity sometimes.
Not the best but i wouldn't call it 'horrible' either
Who is getting confused? Series X and S - the end. I mean, was there a poll taken previous to this article being posted? I'm more confused over people being confused.
I think its the 'Series' in the name that could be confusing to some. It's not a huge leap to imagine that a game for Series X could be compatible with a series of consoles with an 'X' in the name - including the One X - especially if you are not familiar with the (terrible) naming.
@Romans12 it’s about casuals (not people who frequent gaming sites so would know what device is what) - buying things for the wrong system because it’s not as straightforward as it could be.
@Gamer83 Granted, you would do your research before buying, but if you lined up all the XBOX in no particular order, in front of someone who knows nothing about them... I don't think they'd necessarily get the order right from old to new 🤷♂️
@NEStalgia i never liked the Xbox naming since the first one. For as much as i loved the 360 i didn’t even care for that name. Nintendo has had some odd naming as well and don’t even get me started on Android. Lollipop, cotton candy, Jelly Bean, how in the world would someone know that system of naming? So while MS is up there with the worse names so is many others. This is one area i lean PS, they got it right. Well… not with Vita.
I’m gonna say this as politely as I can. Consumers are stupid and lazy. I worked for gamestop and apple for years and people were confused all the time. (And I worked during the WiiU era as well, was straight up ready to hurt myself over the customer idiocy). This includes supposed enthusiasts as well. Some person reads a rumor or a fake mock up or a biased games publication article online and they swarm the stores with their false information like the CEO of the company gave them a hot tip. That’s why I hate console wars so much. And I am gonna say it, in the games and tech industry some men will argue you down incorrectly if you are a woman/girl (started gamestop as a teenager). It got to the point when I got in management I just had my “I told you so” ready.
Consumers get insulted when companies market to them like they are toddlers but honestly that is the best way to get easy sales. Make product names iterative or easy to remember. Period. Saves all involved a headache.
@HonestHick Yeah, the 360 seems like a great name now, because it's a a famed product in hindsight, but yeah, when everyone expected "Xbox 2" and they came out with "360" it sounded dumb and "faux edgy". I think ,what, at the time skater/snowboard culture was all the rage with the kiddos, and I always assumed they were trying to channel that whole skater lingo with 360's and 720's and all that. Which sounded dumb because 360 is....right back where you started. And they followed it with the One...
LOL on Android! To be fair, unlike Xbox, Android versions actually have real numbers officially, its just that the food-themed internal codenames became sort of their own legend, and are memorable enough that that's what everyone (nerds) started referring to it as instead of the numbers, and then sometime after that, Google marketing got ahold of it and ran with it for actual consumer facing marketing. That's where it got dumb. But it really is numbered versions, but you never notice that, you just remember the food names.
Of course, Apple's the one that stopped using numbers or names at all and just started calling everything "product". So sellers had to have parenthesis (2024 ver.) I should sell my old TNT2 GPU from 1999 on Ebay "Nvidia GPU - Used - $550." Yeah I know they started using numbers again on the phones at least, because even Apple eventually figured out their naming was even worse than Xbox.
Sony, well, they figured it out for consoles, but then we get into their cameras, TVs, audio.....yeah....they're pretty bad too.
@NEStalgia I think (as others have hinted too) they wanted the 360 to sound as close to ps3 as possible. Because it would have been Xbox 2 and would sound inferior to the ps3
Dear friend @GeeForce
Scorpion kills itself when it is cornered (and/or caged).
When you call comething starting with "Series" you imply that "There is more to come"... Meaning, microbesoft saying "Please continue to watch us, because there will be more consoles in future under the Xbox Series .... brand"... But sadly, we hear more and more everyday that microbesoft trying to make a U turn.
@themightyant They do with devices like Surface, it just baffling how consistently bad they are at naming their Xbox hardware.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner Yeah, and it makes sense, launching an Xbox 2 a year before the PS3 would make the PS3 seem much newer (and you can always get a second job to buy one lol.)
But.....at the same time....360 boxed them into a brand hole forever. It worked at that moment in time, but left them no actual forward strategy to go with the brand after that. It's kind of a metaphor for all of Xbox, isn't it?
Of course they could have stuck with the skater theme, the Xbox 720, 1440, Xbox 4k? It would have actually been PERFECT, though you need hindsight to know it. Instead they go to "One". Then expand it to One S and One X. And then deside to also make the successor X and S. Did they not learn from WiiU that you do not recycle names? Even XboxU would have been sadly better. And then when they have the Pro model it could be perfect, the Xbox Series F|U.
@RetroMan71
I mean, you might be able to say that about plenty of consoles. I'm not saying the naming has been good but it's not as bad as people make it out to be either. I do think Sony's simple number line for the home consoles works best but as mentioned by others, if MS copied that, it was going to look like Xbox was a generation behind. They were in trouble either way. Bottomline, if you're going to invest in something like a gaming system, which isn't cheap, look into things first.
@NEStalgia Tech naming has to be more difficult than us customers are making it out to be with how bad some of these are haha. 360 is my favorite console of all time but i as i said never cared for the name but you are correct now it seems cool cause it was their best console to date. I don’t mind the Series name if it’s going to continue. So we get the Xbox Series X2, i am not saying i love it. But i can learn to live with that and just accept they will never have a good console name. The PS6 is just so much easier to say and reference to what it is. Remember the PS2 day’s it just has a sound to it thats like oh yeah i remember those graphics and time in gaming, now remember the Xbox One, which one was that? Oh that was the PS4 days! LOL
@HonestHick Series X1 and Series S1 will be so much more powerful than the One X and One S!
I guess it still makes more sense than PC where you have a 8900XT which is totally different from the 8900XTX but better than the 9050XT, all run on your "Intel Processor".
I still just love "Intel Processor." It's like naming your dog "Dog".
Apple does this with their watch and people don't complain about being confusing.
Nintendo pick a different name every console generation and it is fine.
But Xbox is 'confusing'.
PureXbox is becoming an Xbox haters parade.
Everyday a new thing to complain. Run out of complaints? Let's recycle.
People hate on Xbox for the sake of it and will find new ways to do so.
@eduscxbox "Nintendo pick a different name every console generation and it is fine"
That's kind of the point. Nintendo picks a new name every time, and thus there's no confusion because there's only one product of that name. You know it's the right one. There's one time where they didn't do that. The WiiU. Which had the same confusion as Xbox naming to the point it catastrophically failed. "I don't need a screen controller for my Wii!" Xbox would have done better with unique names like Nintendo and Sega did.
I mean, Xbox naming is so confused, they're still using the project codename 20 years later lol!
Apple...well....apple people are special. They just need to know they bought an apple device. They don't really need to know they just spent $2800 on a $1200 laptop do they?
If you look at it from the perspective of a very casual gamer who may own a One x/s, printing X|S on the boxes of Series console games could be pretty confusing and they may be led to believe that a current gen game will work in their console. Not everyone is as into this hobby as we are and I genuinely feel bad for folks that make this mistake, open their accidentally purchased $70 game and then can't return it. It really is just an absolutely bananas naming convention.
@NEStalgia buddy i have been trying to log back in to message you, and it wouldn’t login. It would take the email and password and then not load to log me back in. I didn’t even log out so i am not sure if they were having an issue or not. My Push was working ok.
@HonestHick Strange! I hadn't had any problems, but maybe I missed an outage. Or mAybE thEyRe oUT tO gEt YoU? Just blame Xbox.
@NEStalgia yeah it was, but why not just blame Xbox. I am surprised we haven’t see an article or video blaming Xbox for the Dual Sense’s poor battery life. Haha
Or have we and i just missed it? Lol
@HonestHick To be fair, lack of innovation on the Xbox controller to the point of just ignoring industry standard gyros probably is why Sony gets away with their shoddy batteries and drifting sticks...
@NEStalgia yeah good point. I do like the way the Xbox controller feels in hand and the offset sticks. But it’s largely the 360 controller, and of course the Xbox One controller. I mean they are missing tech from a decade or longer ago in them. They better get with the times more on the Series X2 in 2026-2028
@HonestHick Yeah, I don't need the haptic triggers and the like but gyros? Really? They now own the #1 shooter ever in CoD and are holding the whole industry back without gyros.
@NEStalgia yep and i do like some of the haptic feedback in the Dual sense so i would like to see it in a Xbox controller. I mean chainsawing a locust in Gears with that type of haptics would be really cool, but not having the gyros this far into them being a thing is just insane. MS is just either lazy or dumb. They aren’t ran right for the resources and infrastructures they have. It’s just odd.
@HonestHick "lazy or dumb". Introducing the Xbox Lazy and Xbox Dumb. Yeah has a good ring to it in certain that's the names of the next consoles.
I'm so mad about the gyros. I thought it was a given for this Gen. I was floored when they said it has none. Xbox is holding the whole industry back. Even valorant said it's because Xbox they aren't using gyro on ps. That's just wrong.
@NEStalgia wow that is bad. Those names aren’t as bad as Xbox One. Still my least favorite name they have ever used. That was such a mistake. I didn’t love 360 but it was good enough. It worked. One was just so lame, for a rich company to come up with that it’s like wow. Ya’ll tried hard to make sure this thing failed. Marketing 101 mistakes right there.
@HonestHick Better than Xbox Zero? That was the launch model. It upgraded to Xbox One with the day one patch that removed Kinekt.
@NEStalgia kinda see that as a tie honestly. Haha they were so afraid of numbers so they couldn’t call it Xbox 2, so it has to have a 3 in it. Ok fair enough i suppose. So let’s call it Xbox One vs PS4? I am not sure there’s all that much difference there to the general public. Series is ok, i don’t love or hate it. But man they need something more hip and understandable. Something that can market itself well. Cause if that thing tanks out the gate i could see them going 3rd party possibly unless they just want to sit there and slump a 3rd gen in a row.
@HonestHick I'm amazed they didn't tap into their #1 in Mexico status to name the sequel without referencing the numeral 2. They could have called it the Xbox Deuce.
Series is a terrible name because they already had Xbox S and Xbox X. Yes it's One vs Series. But Xbox Series X and S sounds identical to Xbox X and S last Gen. It's even still the white one and the black one.
@NEStalgia don’t give them any ideas with the Xbox Deuce hahaha
Yeah i get that, Series isn’t the best name by any means. I just like it better than Xbox One. That was lame as heck and someone should have gotten fired.
@HonestHick
Xbox
Xbox 360
Xbox Deuce
Xbox Deuce X
Xbox Deus X Machina
Xbox 10
Xbox 365
Simple!
@NEStalgia hahaha and they wonder why they loose to Sony.
In fairness i like some of those names better than Wii and Wii U
Haha
