Alright, who remembers Project Spark?! Back in October of 2014, Microsoft Studios decided to publish this ambitious game creation suite that allowed people to make, share and download games with others, but sadly it didn't last long.
The obvious comparison here is Dreams on PlayStation, but Project Spark arrived six whole years before it. And, even though it's an entire decade old now, some fans still swear by it as the most user-friendly game creation suite they've ever come across, as well as one that offered massive potential to anyone who was willing to invest in it.
You can check out some examples of what was possible in Project Stark in the trailer above, which showcases the ability to create all kinds of different games - from Tetris and Flappy Bird clones to four-player action-adventure titles.
So, why do we never hear about this anymore? The short answer is that Project Spark didn't make enough money to last longer than two years, with the game's servers being shut down permanently on August 12th, 2016.
Initially, it was a paid title that also featured microtransactions, but later transitioned to a free-to-play model before ditching microtransactions altogether. When active development ended, those who had been working on Project Spark were put to work on other Microsoft Studios projects, meaning it no longer became feasible to keep the servers live.
There is still a way of playing it in 2024 if you have access to it, though. As mentioned over on Reddit, if you go offline you'll bypass the automatic connection to Project Spark's now-defunct servers, making the game accessible again:
Whether you regard Project Spark as a failed experiment or not, there's little doubt that it had a major influence on the Dreams team at Media Molecule, and it remains one of the most ambitious Xbox first-party titles of all time.
This game still has its fans even today, and 10 years later, we look back on it fondly as part of the early Xbox One era. We'll leave you with a snippet from The Guardian's review of Project Spark back in the day, as well as some screenshots:
"With a thriving support community and solid tutorials, it has met its stated aims with aplomb, offering a route into game development for anyone. Indeed, it does a better job of connecting this experience to real programming logic than many of its competitors..."

I do remember this coming out, it never interested me but I know alot of people that it did. Funny enough I didn't know they stopped it till now.
I remember really liking this game… er, game development application. It’s actually what eventually got me interested in trying Unity out, which I used to make a game for one of the software development courses.
I also remember making a fake social media app (which was kinda crappy lol) freshman year for one of my classes and I actually called it Project Spark. I even used the game logo for it haha.
Point is, I really enjoyed the title despite not being something I played all the time. It kinda got me to dabble into game dev, even if I never fully dove into it. Might try again someday, but regardless, I’d love to see this game come back.
Honestly I forgot this came out, for some reason I thought it was cancelled.
I didn’t spend more than a few days with it but I’ll never forget the little world I built with this thing.
I was actually thinking about Project Spark the other day when it was announced that LittleBigPlanet 3 was being delisted, and how these sorts of games - LittleBigPlanet, Dreams, Project Spark, etc - just don't seem to take off and they certainly don't seem to last long.
I remember Microsoft shooting themselves in the foot with the marketing, big shock. Stapling Conker onto the E3 trailer really screwed with expectations. Still, huge shame this died. This and Dreams were both very special.
Anyone remember a Linkin Park song debuted with Project Spark's announcement? Good times.
The game's art style was too distinctive, and it was a shame that it could only be played as ‘Project Spark’.
If it had a more conventional design, it would have been a little more successful.
I really enjoyed Project Spark! Even played the Conker game they built inside it. Was really fun overall and I enjoyed making some levels.
Yeah, I was surprised this whole great article concluded without mention of Conker.
Forgot about this game. It was really ambitious with lot promise.
They definitely should bring it back. Also Full House Poker and 1 vs 100. 3 underrated games.
Real OGs remember Kodu Game Lab.
It was a great idea but the marketing was terrible. I would love to play this today. I think they really should of stuck it out and it could of turned into a success. Fable Legends was interesting and intriguing but it was cancelled right before it was nearly finished.
