"Nothing breaks the otherwise fantastic atmosphere like wanting to throw down your controller in anger, before realising that you aren’t holding one" best kinect line ever.
Oddly, according to PlayFit I have burned over 500 calories on Leela just swaying my hips side to side; meanwhile I can barely scrape out 127 calories on Your Shape'12 even though I do at least 45min of excercise on it daily. Some are reporting this is a flaw in the Kinect ID (that is, even if you are signed into your log-in, if Kinect doesn't 'recognize' you then your calories aren't being counted.) Even though it is far (faaarrr) from accurate, its still fun for those nerds (like myself) who just like seeing numbers rise !
I hear you. Kind of scary that about a year ago we were given a very unspectacular demonstration of the light-saber battle... torn down by tracking issues like most Kinect games have. Now we have a video promoting other 'neat' things you can do in the game, but hey, did you fix the light-saber or not? Don't know about you guys, but the only thing that ever interested me was doing 'Jedi stuff', but this video looks more like a collectioin of mini-games.
There are two sides to "Leela." The 'play' side which was very accurately reviewed above, and the somewhat less obvious 'reflect' side. I feel this review missed the point of this second side. Indeed, Leela can be viewed as a mini-game compilation, but this ignores the meditative side of Leela, which is indeed something unlike anything that has been tried in games for along time. Anyone tired of the same-game-different-box rut that Kinect games are falling into should FULLY explore Leela. Pro: When you get down to the components there really is something "Unique" here. Con: "Unique" doesn't always mean "for everyone". Also, to relax you would normally want to dim the lights, but then Kinect can't tell what you are.
Maybe I just suck, but this is one of the most difficult games I've ever played. If you've never done one of these dance things (I do so, er, decent on the Michal Jackson one) I recommend renting this first... I can barely do the "Easy" settings.
I'm writing this months after the original review, and I must say that Gunstringer has definetly stood up well, and is still one of the best games for Kinect. I still play it. One of the funniest endings I've seen in a long time... seriously if you play this stick it out until the end, its a reward in its own right. I have so much fun with this because its one of the few true "games" for kinect, ie. its not a 'fitness' title or collection of mini games. I think devs have such a hard time making 'real games' like this because the kinect has serious detection issues, giving a nearly all kinect games an elementof lag or lack of response. This actually plays to Gunstringers strength as the whole "controlling a puppet on strings" feel explains this slight lag.
Seriously, if you were to pick any single event from the Olympics to make an entire game out of... why would anyone pick an event which has 'zero' diversity? Swim in a straight line... are you serious?
reminds me of the tour de france game for XBLA (lol). Raise your hand if you bought that piece of gold
@ James: Gamespot review was a joke. My friend had trouble exactly how the reviewer from GS had, but my friend was drunk and when I told him "Hold it like a real dart and throw it smooth and even (like a real dart!)" my friend was on target repeatedly. GS reviews can be terrible.
@ This review and Algorythm: Am I just not getting football? "...and works well when played co-operatively" refers to what? The only multiplay on football has you waiting while your friend gets his touchdown... I've never NOT gotten the touchdown because you just throw at the litle green icon and its done. The "Run in place" aspect I don't even mess with, regardless of how fast you pump your legs you always get tackled and you run in a straight line only (?!), no dodging defenders or juking. Very 'meh' compared with baseball's simultaneous play. Faves: Golf and darts. 'mehs': Football (am I just not 'getting' it?), and tennis (collision detection is a bit wonky).
