Re: Here's Your First Look At Steam Games On The Xbox PC App

BacklogBrad

It's annoying that launching the warcraft games from the xbox app is seemingly worse than launching a steam game in the xbox app. Steam games just launch right into it but "launching" the warcraft games just brings up the game page in the battle.net app then you need to click the launch game button in that app. I wish that would bypass the need to click play in battle.net.

Re: Here's Your First Look At Steam Games On The Xbox PC App

I am playing around with it now. It looks like all my currently installed games from Epic and Steam are available to launch from the Xbox app (GOG games are not showing). I tested the launch for a handful from each platform and it worked fine.

The big takeaway so far is that you need to install the Steam/Epic games from those apps first then you can launch them from xbox. This is pretty disappointing, I hope they eventually make it so I can see all the games I own on those other platforms and Install them to the pc directly from the xbox app. But it is nice to just need to open the one app and see all the installed games (minus GOG) in one place.

I exited the xbox app and reopened and this feature is no longer working lol. Just gamepass games showing as installed. I see why it's insider only. So who knows if I even saw the full extent of this feature when i thought it was working

I dont see the appeal of their service. If you are willing to wait 12-18 months for the 1st party content then you might as well buy the game at sale prices. I wouldn't want to pay a monthly subscription to rent their 1-3 games per year well after they release.

Gamepass is still way more appealing especially if you have access to different devices like pc, handheld pc, meta quest, etc. I am regularly playing off of the same save on 3 or more different devices.

I don't think they will "put steam on the console" but they will make it possible to have steam, epic, gog on the console. It will be up to the user to put steam on the console. Much like the steam deck does not come with epic or have it listed in their store. You need to side load that yourself.

It will likely be a windows hybrid with an xbox UI.

Gabe from Steam had a great quote when they released the deck. He was asked if users could install windows on it. He said of course the user can, it's a pc.

Xbox is essentially becoming a new gaming version of Windows and that is very exciting. Get the traditional tv oriented xbox if you want, get a prebuilt pc, build your own, go with a gaming laptop, handheld, etc. Your xbox library and store will be there wherever. While playstation and Nintendo are locked to a single device and you are limited to what they decide the device can do and will cost.

Xbox is letting Sony and Nintendo fight their little console sales figures war while they are fighting microsofts oldest fight, the operating system war. XboxOS/windows against SteamOS and linux/mac/etc.

Sadly, people will still drool over sales figures of the dedicated devices and wait for sony and Nintendo to grant the ability to purchase a whole new variant like the "pro" version halfway between the next time they let you buy a whole new "next generation" of the device. Xbox will always have a pro version available, upgrade whenever and however you want.

Re: Talking Point: Did Xbox Just Hint At A Hybrid Next-Gen Console?

BacklogBrad

I doubt they are refrencing a switch like device by xbox. Technically the rog ally and steam decks are hybrids since they have hdmi out. Any handheld they or 3rd party make would qualify as a hybrid. I just doubt they are teasing anything from their own hardware that is portable.

I think xbox makes a console that is "hybrid" in the console and pc sense not the portable and stationary sense. This is way more exciting than a handheld.

This is an appealing strategy. My biggest complaint about Nintendo and Playstation is that you are at their mercy for where your library is. They (and xbox) have in the past cut me off from my libraries, they probably will again (psvr2 did this just a few years ago). I have so many digital games that can only be accessed on one single device like the wii or ps3 and no where else. This idea of my Steam, epic, gog, and xbox libraries being side by side on a plethora of devices is very appealing. Especially with how well xbox has implemented the cross saves. Playing the same save on the xbox in the living room, the pc in my office, or a handheld on the go is the type of move that will actually say I want this platform and their devices over the other ones.

Re: Talking Point: Would You Like To See A New Type Of Forza Game In 2026?

BacklogBrad

I feel like the main series needs a new take way more than the horizon series. The Horizon games are some of the most slam dunk successful racing games ever. All 5 of them have been great.

The mainline needs something to make it more replayable. Acquiring new cars and leveling them up on the same couple of tracks is not fun for more than a few hours. I don't think a story mode is the answer for a hardcore racing Sim but some kind of season/career mode like Nascar or F1 would help.

This device is not trying to take over any other device in terms of sales. The 4 million of the steam deck is probably out of reach. This is an expansion of the Xbox ecosystem and a proof of concept for portable windows/xbox. They hope this leads to Lenovo, anbernic, Alienware, etc or their users putting portable windows on devices.

Instead of focusing on unit sales they will continue to push the overall xbox users. There will be a wide variety of devices including first and third party. That is what is kind of exciting about the future of xbox, it's not going to be limited to the official box and we will have a ton of options. You can build your own pc with this gaming windows/xbox interface.

Re: Developer Reveals Surprisingly Critical Feedback After Launching On Xbox Game Pass

BacklogBrad

It's hard to envision the game doing any better without gamepass. Probably more of a case of too many games and too little time.

If gamers, on average, buy and play around 5 games per year and the industry releases thousands of games per year then a lot of these games are not going to succeed in the way this guy wishes his game was doing.

I wonder how he feels about Epic giving away 50+ games away per year for free, no strings attached. That's a lot of time gamers can spend on games they aren't paying for.

These types of services are great for the consumer and bring more people into gaming by reducing the ever increasing price barrier. They are a net positive for gaming.

Re: Talking Point: Switch 2 Owners, Should Xbox Embrace Nintendo's New System?

BacklogBrad

I'm still on the fence on buying a switch 2. I am not convinced that it will be worth it. I definitely don't plan to buy 3rd party games there if i get one. I have much better options to play those games that aren't locked to a single device.

Even though I don't plan to buy 3rd party games on a Nintendo device, xbox should absolutely put every single one of their games on the platform.

Re: Forza On PS5 Has 'Easily' Made $100 Million For Xbox, Says Analyst

@Weebleman sony profiting off of their ports doesn't impact anything from xboxs perspective. If it increases their bottom line then who cares? It's no different than giving Steam a cut to access those players.

Spiderman for example, could easily be profitable on an xbox port and ultra profitable on switch. Who cares if xbox and Nintendo get a smaller percentage of the $70 per copy?

ChatGPT is estimating that porting a AAA game to a different console costs 500k-2m. Xbox made out great on forza.
