Xbox Determined To Expand 'Play Anywhere', Says It Will Help Reach More Players

For years, it felt like Xbox Play Anywhere was getting little to no attention from the folks over at Team Xbox, and now suddenly it's become the big thing in 2025 - quite possibly because an ASUS Xbox handheld is on the way this year.

Whatever the case may be, it's great news for us! Xbox having a cross-buy system means we can get access to PC versions for some of our console games, and it sounds like the list is going to grow substantially in the future.

Talking to 4Gamer in a new interview, Xbox's head of strategic markets (Agnes Kim) advised that although Xbox Play Anywhere is an optional thing for developers, Xbox is focused on trying to expand the service and reach more players:

We believe that expanding Play Anywhere will help the ecosystem grow and reach more players.

We don't impose this strategy on developers, it's just a flexible option.

Kim mentioned that this is all about the idea of playing Xbox games "anytime, anywhere, regardless of platform", and hopefully that bodes well for the idea of seeing native console games on handhelds and PC in the future as well.

If this big push for Xbox Play Anywhere is being prompted by an upcoming ASUS Xbox handheld, it's a really nice bonus for those who don't want to buy one of those anyway! Everyone who uses a PC or a Windows handheld stands to benefit, and hopefully in years to come, we'll have many thousands of supported Xbox Play Anywhere titles.
