Xbox's new strategy has it releasing more games on more platforms, but there are still certain steps new players must follow if they want to join in on the fun.
One of them happens to be mandatory Microsoft account logins. We've seen this with Sea Of Thieves and now sure enough, it's come up with Forza Horizon 5, due out on PlayStation 5 this April.
Although this probably shouldn't catch too many players off guard at this point, as highlighted by our friends at Push Square, one detail in the official FAQ has raised questions about the preservation of Forza Horizon 5 on PS5:
"You'll need to link to a Microsoft account in order to play Forza Horizon 5 on PS5. This process begins the first time you start up the game on your console."
So, if the account linking feature was ever disabled, the game would no longer be officially accessible or playable - unless it was later patched out, of course. Xbox also isn't releasing a physical copy on this platform, which has led certain members of the PlayStation community to believe there are some "legitimate concerns here".
This isn't the first time something like this has come up, and the Forza series in general also doesn't have the best track record - with existing titles in the Horizon series being delisted by Microsoft one after the other. That said, PlayStation has gone down a similar account-linking route with with its own titles on PC, which has led to controversy as well.
Some of PlayStation's single-player games have since had their PSN account requirements removed due to the backlash, but Sony president Hiroki Totoki suggested just a few months ago that forcing a PlayStation Network account for "live service" titles on PC was important in order for players to "enjoy the games safely".
Here's what he said (via an interpreter) during a recent financial call:
"We have learned a lot. The way to face the issues regarding PC, for instance. The PlayStation accounts that we have offered – well actually, by offering them, for instance, sometimes that tends to invite pushback. But for the live service games, in order to maintain order of the gaming so that anybody can enjoy the games safely, we need to create an environment conducive to that and, of course, enjoying the game freely."
From an Xbox perspective, the requirement is seemingly a big win - with the company effectively able to tally up these new users and signups and file them under the "Xbox ecosystem" going forward. It already seems to be paying off as well - with games like Sea of Thieves proving to be a big success on PlayStation, and thanks to the tech giant's acquisition of Activision (including the Call of Duty series).
What are your thoughts about Microsoft's approach to the Forza Horizon series availability? Will you be double-dipping on PS5 next month? Let us know in the comments.

My thoughts are always the same, no single player games should ever require an online connection or account login. For Sea of Thieves it makes sense as that's an always online game and at least you got the benefit of your progression following you.
For this though it should not be necessary and you can't even share your progress over to Playstation. Then again Playstation's own GT7 is completely unplayable offline for no good reason, so it's not like they're any better
If they're concerned about preservation there's a console for that. Xbox Series X/S.
The odds of someone not having a Microsoft account are much lower than someone not having a PSN account. Brand accounts will always be here, like it or not.
Remember when digital movies tried to have a single account? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UltraViolet_(website)
@carlos82 Forza is multiplayer though.
@JON22 How are they preserving games when they constantly delist their own and do nothing to prevent old games from getting removed?
It is what it is they are getting an Xbox game so set up a Microsoft account nothing major or upsetting!!
Babies really need to grow up my god!
@shoeses Every Forza horizon game will eventually be delisted because of licences it is what it is 🤷
@mousieone you can play all of its main content solo
If you want to play FH5 enough on PlayStation that you have handed over your cash to buy it .... mountains & molehills.
@mousieone you can switch to having the map filled with AI instead of humans.
@Ricky-Spanish I wasn't talking about Forza.
IMO it’d be better to incentivize a login similar to other third party publishers like Ubisoft and EA, but I understand Microsoft’s desire to bolster their “engagement” numbers for shareholders. If you’re going third party, you need money and metrics to prove it’s working. It is what it is.
More and more games are requiring 'online' aspects in their 'Single Player' mode for various reasons - whether that is Streaming (assets/content), Shared worlds, Online Leaderboards, Random events etc. Often they do have Online modes too, Co-op or Competitive and allow 'drop-in' to the Campaign modes.
Discs don't 'preserve' the game either - most discs these days only have the Beta code at best on them - requiring a Download on Day 1 to actually be 'playable' - assuming the whole game is on Disc and not just an 'installer' to download the game. The Disc is often locked to a certain Platform and those are no longer in production - neither is the 'Physical' media. I can't go and buy 'Goldeneye' for N64 on Cartridge, buy a new N64 to play it on and new Controllers too if needed. That game is NOT preserved as such - it has been ported now to newer hardware but if I still had Goldeneye on Cartridge, I can't play it today without a working N64 and Controllers which are no longer in Production so can't buy 'new' with any Guarantee/warranty.
With Online games - and yes Forza Horizon 5 is an ONLINE Game despite having the 'option' to play Solo - then unless its locked to a single Platform, the Publisher is likely to want you to sign up to their Servers for Cross-play etc. EA, Activision, Ubisoft etc expect you to have an EA, Activision or Ubisoft account to play 'online', agreeing to their terms of service etc and MS is a Multi-platform Publisher (as far as Playstation is concerned) and therefore doing exactly the same as all other Publishers on platforms they don't own or have any 'control' over to ban cheaters, hackers etc. Hence they get you to join their Servers, agree to the Terms and Conditions, so have legal ability to deal with those that break their terms and conditions.
@JON22 You mean the console that requires you to download a platform-specific version of the game to play it, even if you wanted to play the XBone version contained on the disc? That console that, if those servers ever go away, will suddenly have far fewer games playable on it since the smart delivery copy will be inaccessible?
Okay.
@carlos82 I can play the solo portion of Halo to, your point?
@beltmenot sure but default isn’t like that.
@Dalamar73 What you want me to do I have a family a life to live you fight that fight brother ✌️
@Dalamar73 I will do 👍
@Dalamar73 I talk the talk sir ok! Also walk the walk, dance the dance, crawl the crawl and love the love can you honestly say the same.
My guess is no 💆
Hasn't this like been a thing in Minecraft for years now?...
Does it really matter that much? The game will be delisted regardless in years to go by, it's just the way it is with licenses. MS will no doubt have several games on PS that require a MS account by the time they delist FH5. That's a system they will never kick.
@shoeses What games are you talking about?
@SMJ Just off the top of my head, the 360 Halo games, DOOM 1993 and DOOM 2, and the Double Fine XBLA games that Microsoft either personally chose to delist or to no re-list because they want you to pay for Game Pass infinitely instead of own them.
If you had bought any of those games you would still have access to them though.
@BAMozzy depends on how much you willing to spend. There's still some brand new N64 out there hanging about. Or just buy a good 2nd hand. Goldeneye is still out there too to buy 2nd hand (new if you're fortunate).
