It wasn't always the easiest for Sea Of Thieves in the earlier stages of its life, but seven years on, the game is officially a huge success and is now even available on the PlayStation 5.
The game's creative director Mike Chapman has used the seventh anniversary of the game to talk about its future on social media - revealing it feels like the team is "just getting started". Rare has recently "planned out" what it wants the next five years to look like and is even dreaming beyond this point to ensure a "bright future" is on the horizon.
"Seven years ago today, the #SeaOfThieves journey began, and in many ways, it still feels like we’re just getting started. We recently planned out what we want the next five years to look like, and we dreamt even way beyond that! The game has a bright future ahead"
When asked by a fan on social media about the current outlook for Sea of Thieves given the team originally mentioned a target of "8-10 years", Chapman reiterated how he could very much see Sea of Thieves going beyond this point.
One of the bigger updates for Sea of Thieves in recent times was the game's release on the PS5 last year, with reports at the time suggesting the game had surpassed one million sales on this platform in just a handful of months.
As for the immediate future of Sea of Thieves, Season 15 was launched last month - adding in new Megaladons and much more. Xbox has also marked this anniversary with the release of the Sea of Thieves: X Edition (exclusive to Xbox platforms) for $79.99 (or your regional equivalent) and you can save $16.00 if you have a Game Pass subscription.
"Dive into Sea of Thieves with this special edition, which includes a copy of the game with all permanent content added since launch, plus a comprehensive collection of ship sets inspired by Xbox and beloved Xbox titles, as well as a wide-ranging assortment of extra cosmetics."
Will you be joining in on the Sea of Thieves' seventh anniversary celebrations? Any interest in the X Edition? How else would you like to see this game expanded upon in the future? Leave your thoughts in the comments.

I played it for a good chunk 6 months out from launch, and went back when all episodes of the Monkey Island tie-in adventure were released. It's a fine enough game. The gameplay loop was entertaining if you had a friend or two to join, the art-style is on point, and there was a moment sailing my ship out of the storm just as the sun rose on the horizon where everything came together in an almost transcendental way.
But I'm mainly a single-player-gamer who has little patience for SaaS/subscriptions/premium-currency-games, so Sea of Thieves isn't for me long-term. It was fun, but I'm done. I'm happy to see it thrive, though - particularly because of some deep-rooted affection for Rare.
I played the hell out of this game when first released but sadly couldn't keep up with the timed content so eventually dropped off but it's easily one of the best social games going. It was bland as hell at first but man has it come on in leaps and bounds. So glad to see this charted for more years to come.
I’m shocked that people love this game so much 🤷🏻♂️. I miss the old rare and all the amazing ip that Microsoft just sit on and do nothing with 😭.
@Residentsteven well Phil days it's up to Rare what they make, and they choose new stuff. I am sure Phil could hire other teams to bring back some old IP
@Valhura good old uncle Phil 😂 honestly I was excited when he said they were not making Kinect games anymore and they showed off this game and I immediately said nope not interested. Last time they did a sequel to an old game was banjo kazooie nuts and bolts which was just awful imo.
We have a crew that sails about once a week, pretty good fun with friends.
That X Edition isn’t $16.
It’s $16 off if you have Game Pass Ultimate. It’s $79.99 base price.
@Kaloudz Yes, timed exclusive content turns me COMPLETELY off once I miss it. No excuse why they can't have it available for people to play that missed it.
Terrible to punish people that have a life. Or at least....ones that not say every 5 mins, "don't forget bang that bell and like and subscribe."
@GuyinPA75 Exactly!!
Me and the wife played religiously and consistently got everything done between updates - starting wayyy back with the thrones. We missed a few things and it completely put us off too.
Amazing game but the content flow is definitely catered for people that only want to play that one single game. Glad I'm not the only one that sees it that way.
And yes! I couldn't agree more. Halo MCC (is it?) does it right. Season Passes that you can get whenever you want as they never disappear from the game.
I would like to see the digital art book and soundtracks become downloadable via PDF and MP3 or even CD so I can burn it myself lol
I dislike having to view it on Xbox and the memory it takes up
