We've been treated to a series of "hands on" previews for Bethesda's DOOM: The Dark Ages today, which is set for release on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PC and PS5 in just over a month's time on May 15th.
Taking a quick glance, it's interesting to see just how varied they appear to be - some are saying they've absolutely fallen in love with the new changes, while others are fearful for the full game compared to recent series entries.
Let's take a look at what just some of the "hands on" previews are saying about DOOM: The Dark Ages:
IGN
It may take place in the dark ages of the Doom timeline, but the Slayer’s latest slaughterfest might well represent the peak of the series’s modern era.
Polygon
Doom: The Dark Ages’ willingness to try something new is charming, and for a franchise that has been booted and rebooted, it might be necessary. We’ve been to Mars. We’ve been to hell. We’ve been to hell on Earth! I didn’t doubt that id could squeeze another helping of fun from Doom, but I wasn’t really itching to see the Doomguy return to E1M1 for an emotional homecoming. It certainly feels like the freedom to forge a new path is keeping the developers interested in their own work.
TheGamer
I can expertly dismantle every demon type in Doom Eternal with my eyes closed, but take away my dash and hand me a shield, and it’s an entirely different game - one I’m not sure feels as fun or exciting to play.
Rolling Stone
Although they had successfully done it before, id Software didn’t need to reinvent Doom; it was already nearly perfect by design. Instead of actually building upon what made Doom and Doom Eternal work, the quick, fluid, kick-ass gameplay, Doom: The Dark Ages is bogged down with needless “innovation” for a game series that has always thrived on simplicity.
Eurogamer
This is a bold reimagining, a brave departure, and even though I have reservations about some things in The Dark Ages, I do not have reservations about id.
Video Games Chronicle
Doom: The Dark Ages is so much fun to play. I could really stop there and let you get on with your day, because my feeling on the game is quite simply that. It’s incredibly fun. It’s uncompromised, energetic, brutal, and rewarding. It is everything that I’d hope and expect from a Doom game, pulled off by a team that’s clearly full of confidence.
It's really all over the place, then! It seems the majority of these previews are more positive than negative, but we're not going to get all the answers we're looking for until the full reviews land in May.
FYI, we are planning to review DOOM: The Dark Ages here at Pure Xbox in around a month's time, so be on the lookout for our impressions around then. Here's hoping we find it to be a great evolution rather than a disappointing step back.

Except for a few the majority have been overwhelmingly positive.
Had some reservations when watching the gameplay reveal.
Obviously looking slower and different to the fast paced action in doom eternal.
Guess I will have to wait and see if the changes will suit me. But DOOM eternal was the tops for me.
So dark ages has a lot to do.
It will most likely come down to if you gel with the new heavy play style. Just like how Doom Eternal had a few detractors who didn't like the platforming style but was overall very well received.
Honestly I am so sick of these “safe” sequeels and such so to see a bit change to the formula will get my praise.
Doom eternal introduced a lot of platforming, dashing, very high-velocity and specific ways to effectively kill enemies. So playing it was very refreshing experience. I did not like certain aspects of it and get little tired closer to the end. But I will always give credit and praise to devs for trying new things. They created new gameplay formula and evolved it thru the game and actually based the game around that.
So definitely kudos to ID soft and definitely want to try it out myself
I’m still very excited for it but the concerns here about the new slower play style being innovation for innovation’s sake fit with the concerns I had after watching the trailers. I love the speed of Eternal.
I'm glad PureXbox is going to actually review this around launch!
I enjoyed Eternal to some extent, @OldGamer999, but I preferred the reboot and it's sequel. Eternal was just too fast and frantic. I like picking things off, but with Eternal is was often just a case of being chased within often small arenas, and was less fun because of it. Maybe Dark Ages will suit my playstyle better...
There hasn't been a Doom I haven't played. I was there for the very first one, which I obtained through Shareware (if you know, you know! 😉) though successfully completing the early ones was a lot more challenging than the later ones, not because of difficulty, but because of solving all the puzzles, which to a great degree, the later ones lack.
I enjoyed Eternal, but it was simply to frantic to be as enjoyable an experience as the reboot, which is my favourite of the series. Thus, I think the slower pace, and more methodical playstyle, may be much more to my taste...
They are changing the formula which is both exciting and a bit worrying. But I have faith in id to deliver. However i'm not sure Doom needs wider more open world areas or a story, but I hope they deliver.
Will give it a try seen as it's on game pass. Eternal was too fast for me and my aging reflexes so it was somewhat difficult and left me tired after even a short session.
If the new one is a bit slower I am sure I will find it more enjoyable and certainly less tiring.
Doom eternal was to fast paced for me, so the more slower/tankier approach sounds very much up my alley.
@Fiendish-Beaver
Thinking about it the potential slower pace might suit my age now 🤣
Eternal was too fast paced for me, even though I loved what I could play.
This game sounds fantastic to me and I'm very glad they didnt just simply bolt a new number on the old game..
GOTY contender incomint
As long as they don’t turn Doom into an action RPG souls like … I will be ok
IDK. i thought doom eternal was a step down from 2016. The gameplay loop where you stop in arenas that are blocked off by invisible walls seems like some Playstation one nonsense. Doom Eternal was good but nothing like the reboot. Looking forward to this. not sure what people thougth would be "next." looks awesome.
It sounds amazing to me. I think I'll prefer this of all since 2016 (my fave Doom is Doom 3 as it felt more survival horror). I loved 2016 and I loved Eternal, but this sounds more grounded, more focused, and looks bloody amazing. I different approach does not equate to a step back imo. If they'd have kept to the same concept, folks would be moaning that they didn't reinvent the wheel. I personally think this may well be a GotY contender. It's id after all... they know their craft and they know quality.
