We're less than a week away now from Xbox Developer Direct 2025, and with yesterday's Switch 2 reveal now firmly in the rear-view mirror, all eyes are on Microsoft and its next big showcase. The question is, how many surprises will be packed into this year's show?
We already know about one surprise, confirmed by Team Xbox, and now Windows Central reporter Jez Corden is teasing that there might be more yet. It's a vague post we admit, with a big emphasis on the "maybe", but Corden is suggesting that Dev Direct '25 could deliver "more than one surprise" next week.
What a potential second surprise could be? Who knows. The same outlet already claims to know that one secret will be unveiled as the return of a "legendary Japanese IP", and now Corden is speculating on more potential surprises. Here at Pure Xbox we recently floated the idea of another 'shadow drop' from Xbox next week, so maybe a second surprise could take shape in that way? We don't have to wait long to find out!
As usual with these sorts of posts, we'll add the caveat that this is just a rumour for now - until the big show next week anyway. Xbox Developer Direct 2025 takes place on January 23rd, and for all of the event's timings, check out our related news post down below.
Thoughts on there possibly being multiple surprises at Dev Direct? Predict what they might be down in the comments!

More speculation dropped by Jez Corden that dude needs to shut up can't back up anything he says!
Both can be right, @Rog-X. Nadella could have considered shuttering Xbox, and then decided that Xbox would go all in on gaming. The decision to go all in could have been made after considering whether or not it was worth continuing with the Xbox project. The two things are not mutually exclusive.
The question is whether you believe Nadella now. If you implicitly trust him, then fine. However, let's face it, he is not a stupid man. He would not have got to the position he has if he were. Thus, he knows the damage that can be done to the Xbox business if the truth gets out, and saying, 'we said we are all in on gaming', is not the same as saying, 'we considered closing Xbox, but then decided to go all in on gaming'. It all depends on how much you trust Microsoft to be telling the truth, and how much of what they say is just clever wording...
I am guessing a surprise release for Towerborne. I couldn't think of anything else.
Wow what a bold take, "maybe." We all knew that. I guess we're all leakers now.
@Jenkinss exactly. Something is happening next week. Just you watch!
That Jez Cordon "journalist" spreads so much misinformation. I don't trust a word he says, so many things he reports aren't true. No idea why he gets quoted as he's been proven flat out wrong countless times
@Fiendish-Beaver A few years back, maybe 2019, there were substantial rumours about Microsoft selling off the Xbox division. I even saw Bill Gates in an interview almost confirm by saying everything was being considered.

@Dustinator626 When it comes to reporting on rumours, Jez seems to have been more reliable than plenty of others IMO 🤷♂️
Same with Jeff Grubb when he used to do them. YouTuber Extas1s as well. Jason Schreier at Bloomberg is another one, although he tends to focus on reports rather than throwing out rumours.
I think the issue is that the likes of Jez and Jeff share so much that they inevitably get a few things wrong (or plans change behind the scenes) and it paints them in a bad light.
@Fiendish-Beaver @Rog-X If we take the being an Xbox gamer out of it, as a purely business decision it would have been crazy if Nadella DIDN'T consider shutting down Xbox. His whole career has been about looking through their portfolio and removing anything he thought was not pulling it's weight. That doesn't mean he was going to do it, only that it is right to CONSIDER it. That's just sensible business.
@Ricky-Spanish I keep meaning to make a note each time one of these leakers speaks up to track and see who is actually accurate, and then present the results. Perhaps an annual ranking. But frankly who's got the time. If someone with time want's a project, knock yourself out.
@Fiendish-Beaver You're not wrong, but in that case it reads as if entire "news" articles about Xbox were made as if they were breaking revelations over what was at most a basic discussion of options in business. There's nothing to even be done at this point really, but it is rather an interesting situation. Well interesting is probably too generous of a word. A "report" came out with unclear sources that Satya Nadella floated the idea of shutting Xbox down in 2021 and this is juxtaposed to the reality that it was a time when Xbox was earning some of its best revenues to date (15 to 16 billion which were new peaks) and Microsoft ultimately decided to double down by funding the biggest acquisitions in the industry as offers came up.
It's a situation to study because we already know what DID happen and yet people are fixated on an idea that maybe the guy at the top talked with people about closing the doors on Xbox. And you know he probably did... but why does anyone care? You could write the same exact article about literally any business and probably be right. I heard from my cousin Jimbo at Sony that Sony's CEO once considered maybe possibly shutting down Playstation. We'll I'm probably right in that the CEO discussed it or with confidants at least once. I could have "reported" on it after Jim Ryan left or Playstation had it's repeated live action failures and gotten a ton of traffic (to whatever made up need journalism site). Then I can defend it by saying that there's no way they didn't think that at least once or tell someone and discuss it.
Xbox reporter. 🤣🤣 I just got in from work and needed a laugh. Thank you.
This dude is right more than he is wrong. Don't get what the hate is all about. Some people just love to hate I guess.
Corden said people who thought Xbox games coming to Switch and PS5 were on "hard copium", his word is worthless.
Whenever someone says maybe at the end of a declaration it invalidates everything they just said.
This is true in relationships and this is true when spreading game leaks.
@FraserG I understand when it comes to news, but the "rumors" he always puts out(even since the Windows Phones days when I owned those), continually flop.
Even as TeiGekiLord just said, his hard stance saying Xbox games WILL NOT be coming to Playstation/Nintendo consoles is the latest example of him being the epitome of wrong. Another reason I don't check out WC and it's disappointing to see his opinions pop up on sites here as an "insider."

I don't mind Jez,he's a good sleep aid.
Rand I enjoy, up until he puts on that weird fanboy mocking voice & cries about people on social media. Then its straight in the garbage!
