We've said it before and we'll say it again, GTA 6 could be the star of the Xbox Series X|S generation, especially considering how long we've all been waiting for it to release. However, that could also mean that it'll be quite taxing on current-gen hardware, and a former Rockstar dev has now come out and said that 60FPS isn't likely on console.
Chatting on the Kiwi Talkz podcast (via GamesRadar), former Rockstar animator Mike York says that he thinks "they're gonna be shooting for 30FPS" with GTA 6, and that "from my experience, they're going to squeeze every little freaking thing they can out of it and then optimise later for 60 frames".
That experience comes from, well, multiple years on the inside over at the famous GTA studio. York worked on both Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, and although he's no longer there, the former dev reckons that only post-launch optimisation, an AI upscaler, or a potential PC release will bring 60FPS gameplay to GTA 6.
"I don't think so. I think they're gonna be shooting for 30FPS – and a locked 30FPS, meaning it never dips below that. They're gonna try to optimise as much as they can to where it never goes below 30.
But it can be bumped up to 40, 41, 52, whatever, and I bet you, like, later, once it's on PC, it'll probably get super optimised and changed and new graphics cards that come out and you'll be able to run it at 60FPS probably at that time."
This makes a lot of sense to us, even if we still don't know exactly what the team has up its sleeve. GTA 6 will be Rockstar's first current-gen project using updated tech, and you've got to remember that even the last-gen RDR2 isn't 60FPS on Xbox Series X|S yet. Ultimately, we'll have to wait and see later this year - GTA 6 is scheduled to hit current-gen consoles sometime in 2025.

sharp intake of breath from ps5 pro owners
It won't need 60 anyway, the animations will be super smooth
I doubt it will be 60fps. I would be shocked if it was. The game will still be great at 30.
Worth noting, that includes All consoles.
To be it sounds like they are rushing to get the game out the door and launch the game. I personally could care less about the game since I found GTA 5 uninteresting and boring. Played the GTA trilogy on the ps2 but the remastered versions are just bad. I seriously doubt GTA 6 will get the same number of games in the first month as GTA 5 did in first month.
$100 ladies and gentlemen.
Wasn't it reported that it cost $2bn to make, and it can't reach 60fps?? Personally, so long as it plays fine, i'm happy, but even so 🤔🙂
@Coletrain I doubt most PS5 Pro owners are expecting 60fps, that's never been Rockstar's approach. They have always tried to push graphical fidelity and simulation as far as they can with the hardware. I'd be shocked if it was 60fps, though i'd take it.
What I do want is a much smoother base framerate. GTA 4 & 5 were both sub-30fps for a lot of the time, ESPECIALLY when the action heated up and you needed it most.
I was expecting this outcome.
maybe next-generation versions will achieve 60fps.
@Isolte
I'm a PC gamers too.
may I say usually GTA pc versions don't push the hardware very much?
RockStar I suspect has a Console First approach, that is fine with me: I'm not criticizing.
Yeah, he said even the Pro would be the same case.
Not suprised at all. Rockstar games have always been 30fps on console
It all be 30fps on all consoles including ps5 PRO.
If its magically 60fps exclusively on ps5 PRO - I will be impressed. Out of all improvements I would always choose more fps.
For now kinda feel underwhelmed with ps 5 PRO as patches does not offer significant improvements (for me personally).
Maybe it will be better long term
Doesn't make any difference to me. 30FPS is just fine. I played RDR2 at 30FPS and that was easily one of the best games of last gen.
Lol this is where the people who usually pretend 30 fps is unplayable go oddly quiet...
@Millionski
I'm thinking to buy a PS5pro too, but I was expecting a bit more by patches and support.
maybe as you say we have to wait a bit longer.
Meh, my interest in GTA has faded away in the years since playing GTA5 on the PS3.
this is definition of being lazy
Former developer. Pure speculation and I personally discount it immediately.
I’m sure sometimes this is deliberate.
So in 2 years from now they can release a remaster on next generation consoles, including a 60fps performance mode.
Generating more and long term sales.
@themightyant haha no I doubt they're expecting it either, I just remember it being such a hot debate in the gaming press when the GTAVI trailer dropped.
It'll look awesome on all the consoles anyway, of that we can be sure
I really love the Series S. Thank you Series S. Do such marvelous job holding back Xbox this gen.
Removed - trolling/baiting
On my Xbox/PS5 Peasant GTA6 will be playing at exactly 0 fps, so I’m not worried. Got tired of GTA a long time ago. Give me RDR3 news and you have my attention.
And I'll put money on it that even those people who often pop up in these forums refusing to play a game because it isn't 60FPS, will still play GTA6 because... well, it's GTA. There will definitely be people out there who will demonstrate some contradictory about turns over this game... 😉
I’ll pass until it comes to PC then. I don’t have the appetite to purchase any XSX game that lacks a performance mode.
I couldn't care less 60fps is nice but definitely not essential especially with a new game GTA I just hope it releases this year 🙏
If it releases this year i'll be happy with that.
@Pigrotto I am debating if I should sell it or keep it. I am sure when cross gen with ps6 starts, some sony games would be also available on ps5/pro and because of PSSR it would run better.
I know alot of assumptions lol, but I dunno.
I cant say I am dissapointed but feels little underwhelming I would say.
Most of us will get used to 30fps in time but it’s going to be awful going from 60fps on GTA 5 to 30fps on GTA 6. But we’ll probably all be in awe once we get in the game to even care about framerates.
@Millionski
maybe wait a bit longer and keep it: probably the next Sony console is 2 years from now or more so we could have a lot of patches and optimisations.
@Isolte this is wrong on so many levels.
If you design around consoles first (as Rockstar do) and can't optimise decently for those because of "scope" and "size", well, you gotta rethink your priorities.
Then again, Rockstar games are the most overrated in the whole business, with the same stale and dated gameplay and the excruciatingly limiting mission design, and I don't expect any of that to change with GTA VI. It'll just be prettier.
Heh. I think the folks pretending GTA isn't the greatest game franchise of all time are the same ones that think Game Pass needs more indie trash. I'm confident Rockstar will deliver me hundreds of hours of engaging gameplay regardless of FPS.
@Nexozi I felt like the only one that lost all interest in GTA. It's just not for me, and that's okay.
It's not going to run at 60 fps on any console this generation. They will add that update to the 10 year anniversary edition available for purchase in 2035/2036.
