Overall, it was a fairly quiet The Game Awards for Xbox both in terms of prizes and new announcements, but Ninja Theory's Hellblade 2 did bring home a couple of awards this year - which is really good to see.
First off, the game itself won 'Best Audio Design' - beating out Xbox's own Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, alongside three PlayStation exclusives. As we all know, audio is a massive part of the Hellblade series, and this is a much deserved win in our book.
Alongside this award, the actor behind Senua herself actually made history during last night's show. Melina Juergens — the talent behind bringing Senua to life — won 'Best Performance' for the second time; something that's never been done before at The Game Awards.
We'd like to congratulate both Melina herself and the team at Ninja Theory for their achievements with Hellblade 2. There's nothing else really like this in the Xbox portfolio, and we're eager to see more on what's next from the first-party developer, including the mysterious Project: Mara.
Glad to see Hellblade 2 take home a couple of awards at TGA 2024? Talk to us about it down below.

It's well deserved, Hellblade 2 definitely deserved to be at least nominated for GOTY and even to win in my opinion, given its original concept, meticulous and emotional staging, well-written story, and the significant difference it made compared to other games in 2024. Not to mention the graphical masterpiece of 2024! Many arguments make this game my GOTY, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion!
Definitely not my cup of tea as a game.
But well done all the same.
My GOTY glad to see this Masterpiece finaly getting some of the recognition it deserves, and with it's extensively researched
and accurate in game representation of her psychosis a very important part of gaming history
The sound design in both Hellblade games is genuinely wonderful. Well Deserved.
What an incredible performance from Melina Juergens and great to see her awarded for it too.
Congratulations to all involved at NT for their amazing work. Well deserved 👏.
Melina was amazing so I’m happy to see this. With that said, while I appreciate what NT were trying to achieve with this sequel, I hope Hellblade 3 will be less of an experience and more of an actual game.
Well deserved, the sound is amazing and a great performance from Melina!
The Audio is the most important part of Hellblade to deliver the experience of Psychosis and how that affects Senua. The performance of Melina was also very important to that too - more so than the Game-play which was more to add 'interactivity' and situational context to the Audio (especially the voices in Senuas head). To me, the Game-play is 'functional' at best, but also to be accessible to more people, not be too complex/difficult/challenging that people get stuck and never 'progress' through to the end. However it seems some still don't get that the 'purpose' is more to 'experience' what living with Psychosis is like and couldn't care less about the audio, maybe find the voices annoying or don't play on a headset, and expect it to be 'Dark Souls' instead...
In terms of a game I thought this was the most disappointing game of the year, but technically very impressive, especially the sound. I personally think a lot of the awards made a lot of sense for once this year, in fact nearly all of them spot on for me with the only one I can't comment are for winners on games I haven't played so can't disagree with.
@BAMozzy I didn't really 'get' the living with psychosis part of the game myself, but great that others did. Didn't click with me the same as something like Take Shelter (with Michael Shannon) did, which I loved, however the acting and audio were of the best I've seen in a game for Hellblade so deserved the wins.
Both thoroughly deserved. It's not a game for everyone but it's objectively a fantastic accomplishment and I was completely immersed from the get go.
@StonyKL The voices are 'dynamic' which may not be so apparent on one playthrough. If you are 'struggling' in game, the voices are more negative in general for example but unless you play it a second time, you may not notice how dynamic it is.
As a 'game', I wouldn't say its great at all. It's not something I'd recommend if someone was focused purely on the Game-play. Other games certainly have better Combat and Puzzles, but this isn't about Challenging the 'player' to beat these - its more about how those situations impact Senua and her Psychosis.
I'm sure that the Puzzle sections and Enemy encounters of the first Hellblade stopped some gamers from progressing, and therefore stopped them from 'experiencing' the impact of Psychosis on Senua - which was the main purpose of both games in a 'more' immersive way than film/TV can deliver.
Good game, but not great. Can’t argue with the awards it walked away with.
Well deserved in both awards.
Though I was a little disappointed by the game, I thought it was a step back from the first title in most ways, but it was still a good game.
I’m shocked that the performance award went to the right person! I was expecting another travesty, like when Manon Gage didn’t win for Immortality, or Erika Mori ended up empty handed for LiS True Colors.
Best graphics (by a mile) and sound of any game I’ve played this past year (including anything on PS5 Pro) and generally I don’t ‘do’ 30fps games. Well deserved, even if it’s more of an experience than a game. It really is an impressive title.
Back to back best audio design wins for Xbox I guess?
The awards it won were well deserved so congratulations!
@fatpunkslim you can almost tell who played the game, and who just knows to regurgitate the same Twitter fluff about how good the game is, just from how they write about it. Senna didn't deserve to be anywhere close to contention, it's everything that is wrong with modern triple-AAA gaming that studios have been moving away from for years; style doesnt work when there isnt substance to back it up (a fact 2023 proved in spades). The game's only being bigged up because there hasn't been any other major first-party titles this year (Indiana was too late, COD isn't aiming for that title, and the smaller games wouldn't have had a real shot in the first place)
I was so happy to see Melina win. She did an incredible job.
Sound and Melina's performance were both incredible, so very well deserved.
What’s the player count looking like
Leaving aside whether it was interesting as a game, I was very drawn to the images, the sound and the world. In terms of artistry, it was probably the best of the year.
