Indiana Jones and the Great Circle launches for Xbox Series X|S and PC next week (with early access starting today) and the reviews are now officially rolling in. There are already a handful of perfect scores - with some critics absolutely loving the experience and others left wanting a little more.
Right, with all that out of the way - let's get cracking! Here are the critic impressions, starting with our very own review:
Pure Xbox (6/10)
"We're always up for trying something different and for teams breaking genre tropes, but in the end, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is at its most fun in fleeting moments - which is a shame considering the amount of care and attention that's been put into adapting this famous old franchise."
Eurogamer (5/5)
"The next Tomb Raider and Uncharted games certainly have their work cut out for them after this, as will whatever MachineGames ends up tackling next. But one thing is certain. Indy's legacy feels well and truly restored with The Great Circle, and that's the kind of mileage we can all enjoy for years to come."
Noisy Pixel (7/10)
"Indiana Jones and the Great Circle captures the spirit of adventure with nostalgic puzzles, richly detailed environments, and thrilling set pieces. While it stumbles with lackluster AI and clunky item management, its charm and sense of discovery make it a rewarding journey for fans of the iconic archaeologist."
IGN (9/10)
"An irresistible and immersive global treasure hunt, and far and away the best Indy story this century, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle doesn’t belong in a museum; it belongs on your hard drive where you can play the heck out of it."
GamesRadar+ (5/5)
"Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is the best adventure this character has embarked on in over 30 years. Developer MachineGames has leveraged its expertise in the FPS space to deliver an immersive, authentic first-person adventure that is quite unlike anything you've played before."
PC Mag (3.5/5)
"Indiana Jones and the Great Circle has the presentation and adventure chops to charm newcomers and nostalgists alike, but a handful of safe and stale gameplay elements keep it from excellence."
Windows Central (4.5/5)
"From the manner in which every line is delivered and scene is shot to the smirk on Indy's face when solving a puzzle, it's clear that everyone at MachineGames just gets what makes Indiana Jones so special. This is a game that can sit next to the original trilogy with pride."
But Why Tho? (8/10)
"Indiana Jones and the Great Circle does what this franchise has always done best. It takes the theft of a seemingly unimportant artifact and thrusts Indy into cataclysmic mystery and makes sure that the charismatic man shines. Punch Nazis, celebrate history, explore the world and then save it. What more could you ask for?"
VGC (5/5)
"We had a smile on our face from beginning to end while playing Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. As close as games can come to a genuine old-fashioned Hollywood blockbuster, it's also an incredibly rich adventure game stuffed to the gills with secrets to find."
And that's the roundup! Although it's still early days for this one - the Xbox version of The Great Circle is currently sitting on a Metacritic aggregate score of 86 out of 100. And on OpenCritic, this new Indiana Jones game has got an aggregate score of 87 out of 100. Of course, this is all subject to change as more reviews go live later today.
And just once again, Indiana Jones launches on December 9th, 2024 with the early access period starting today!

Can't wait to play it, it sounds great from nearly all of the reviews out there
PureXbox has the lowest review currently. Sort of crazy, considering the used to review higher than average for Xbox games.
Commenters on the Pure XBox review: “HOW DARE YOU REVIEW THIS SO LOW, IS THIS EVEN AN XBOX SITE?1?1?1?1?”
Me: “Hey, refreshing honesty, I like it. It’s good to see the negatives and that the reviewer isn’t glossing over sticking points. Well done.”
Really looking forward to this.
Shame it’s not available for the weekend without paying extra. I’m not supporting that awful business model. Will play Day 4 with Game Pass instead.
Praying for a day all review scores are dropped entirely and the actual words of a review do the talking.
Seems like we got a banger on our hands
@SoulChimera You see this is a perfect game for review scores for me. I was sold quite early and want to go in as blind as possible. Hence I havent watched any of the latest trailers and didn’t want to read reviews in detail either, as they would all spoil things.
All I wanted to know was 1) is it awful and perhaps not worth my time 2) is it busted on day 1 and better off waiting for a patch. Review scores and skimming one or two reviews for the performance section is all I needed. I’ll circle back and read the reviews later to compare notes after I’ve played it.
I’m glad Xbox has a W on their hands. I can’t wait to play it if I can pull myself away from Stalker 2. I grew up with Indiana Jones, though, so I’m tempted to put Stalker aside for a bit. This seems to be the perfect Christmas adventure.
I figured a few would be put off by the lack of combat compared to uncharted/tomb raider.
At least it looks like most reviewers are loving it. I was predicting an 80ish score. Well done bethesda!
Keep in mind that a score of 6/10 isn’t bad, it’s still a decent score. Plus most other reviews for it are much higher with the game currently sitting at an 86 for XBOX and an 87 for PC on Metacritic.
Looking forward to playing this one.
@somnambulance :
" Hey, refreshing honesty, I like it. It’s good to see the negatives and that the reviewer isn’t glossing over sticking points. Well done.”
Says the PlayStation fanboy that "never got an Xbox before until the Series X at cheap price"...as his prior comments say.
This is great news! Without the Xbox tax this is a 90-95 release, finally a great AAA game from Xbox.
@Major_Player Reading your comment, you come across as the real fanboy lol.
@IOI Xbox tax, really? 🤦🏻♂️ If it wasn't for that(made up thing), you’re saying it would've potentially been a 95? I just cant with this comment.
@Major_Player Pretty sure you meant to respond to me, not Somnambulance.
That said: I sure as hell am a PS fanboy since FF7. And a Nintendo fanboy since the NES. I still dislike Microsoft in general and have for years. And yet I actually purchased a series X and have been enjoying it for the most part. GASP! Especially Forza Horizon 3-5 and the Halo games! DOUBLE GASP!
Not really sure what my relatively new joining of the XBox ownership club has to do with my reaction to an XBox site review but you do you, man. You do you. Plenty of PS games are overblown and overhyped, too, and it’s nice when reviewers aren’t throwing out automatic 10/10 scores just because exclusive.
@LogicStrikesAgain Absolutely, I’m not saying it’s a universal rule, there’s some reviewers that for whatever reason didn’t enjoy the game like this site’s review, but there 100% is a general bias from a big chunk of media outlets that if whatever game is not available on PlayStation they hold the game to a higher scrutiny and it does result in lower aggregate score, I can bet you right now that in a few months when it does launch on PS5 that version will not score lower than 90.
If you really think that very obvious bias is a myth just take a look again at media outlets, specially bigger conglomerate ones.
After reading a few reviews I think I'm going to be passing on Indiana Jones. The stealth sounds atrocious, who wants to sneak around all the time? The boss fights also sound rather dissapointing aswell. I did not want a sneaking simulator, taking photos etc. I wanted an action packed indie adventure.
Oh well back to Suicide Squad since there's absolutely nothing else coming to gamepass this month I want to play.
@IOI You mean like Forza Horizon 5 getting a 92? Or was it exempted from the “Xbox Tax”? Microsoft Flight simulator 90, Psychonauts 2 87, Halo Infinite 87.
Playstation exclusives also get low scores. Forspoken 64, Condord 62, Babylons Fall 42, Days Gone 71, Destruction Allstars 62, Godfall 61, Valkyrie Elysium 65, Foamstars 57.
You’re saying this game will get a higher score when it comes out on PS? Possibly.
However, both Ghostwire and Deathloop were timed exclusives for PS. And both got a higher Metacritic score for the Xbox version when it came out. Where is the tax there?
Pure xbox is the new ign?
Kind of all over the place… guess I need to read the reviews instead of the blurbs. Or just wait and play it.
I’m mainly hoping it’s not so action-focused. I hated uncharted and its waves upon waves of pew pew.
@oopsiezz Indy has always taken the sneaky route and avoided combat at all costs. The best two Indy games did the same.
If you wanted it to be more like suicide squad I dno what to tell ya 😂
@jesse_dylan I never said I wanted it to be like Suicide Squad, I said I would rather play more SS than sneak around a big open map with little combat.
Wolfenstein 3 was put on the back burner for this even. I would have MUCH prefered Machinegames worked on and delivered another high octane, nazi killing adventure.
@IOI Xbox tax 🤣🤣😭😭😭😭
@oopsiezz ironically, expecting that from an Indiana jones game is the issue. I was specifically hoping it wouldn’t be just another wolfenstein with Indy clothing. 🤷
@IOI
This is great news! Without the Xbox tax this is a 90-95 release
Are you implying that Sony are tax evading?😉
I don't see the point in all the review score wrangling tbh. I assume a lot of the commenters on here have gamepass so it's zero risk to give it a go and see for yourself.
Worst case scenario, it's not really for you and you wasted a bit of time downloading it.
As much as I'm sure positive critical reception is appreciated by the devs, sales numbers will always be more important at the end of the day.
@LogicStrikesAgain Your name checks out 👌
Indiana Jones has a cheese sandwich Easter egg look it up it's hilarious honestly!
Pure Xbox is just one review, most are very good and as Stalker 2 recently proved most people don't go on the judgement of random persons(reviewers) anyway.
To the obvious Sony fan boys posting here, your to obvious.
There's two really important things I need to know about the game.
Is there a plant called Chuck, and does Indy at any point claim to be 'selling these fine leather jackets'?
@LogicStrikesAgain Babylons Fall was a '3rd' party game, as was Destruction Allstars, Foamstars and Godfall, Forspoken was also made by 3rd party Sony bought the company 'after' the games release.
So your list only accounts for two actual First Party made games though you could of added Lego Horizon adventures.
@Rog-X “there 100% is a general bias from a big chunk of media outlets that if whatever game is not available on PlayStation they hold the game to a higher scrutiny and it does result in lower aggregate score”
He never said first party games though. He said whatever game not available on PS, so Xbox exclusives.
But you’re right, i can add Lego Horizon to the list. Further adding to the argument that the Xbox Tax is fake, since PS exclusives also get low scores, even first party games.
Also, it wasn’t an exhaustive list or anything. There’s more, like Killzone Shadow Fall 73, Knack 54, Knack 2 69, Concrete Genie 75, i can go on but you get the point.
@Major_Player You quoted the wrong person. @dsksatter is the person you’re quoting and I see that kindly a response has been given.
For the record, I’ve had an Xbox account since the OG Xbox and have been with the company through the generations, by the way. Call me a PS fanboy if you like, but I’m console agnostic. Xbox was my primary platform in gaming for the 360 era and first half of the Xbox One era. I’ve been primarily PlayStation since maybe 2020, and would say I shifted there with the current generation as Switch exclusives have tapered out. I play on all 3 ecosystems when the console exclusives are there. I have been critical of Xbox this generation, sure, but that’s because I know their ecosystem could appeal to me more, as it once did in the past. If you want to shoot shots, you should know who you’re firing at. I’m pretty transparent about being a software instead of hardware person.
@somnambulance It does amuse me when people fling insults at the wrong person!
It further amuses me when people like that just further the whole “rawr you play other platform, you not true Insert-Platform-Here player!”
I’ve been debating whether to use one of my GP Ultimate 3 month codes next week to play Indy, and I probably will. If I like it, I’ll happily straight-up buy the physical version for PS5 next year no matter how far I get in the series X version. I tend to do that, actually BUY games I like, even after playing them on gamepass.
I’m betting that guy won’t purchase an actual copy for any platform, but will still decry me as a fanboy…
@oopsiezz I want to sneak around all the time I love stealth games
@jesse_dylan 87 on metacritic I wouldn't say that's all over the place I would say that's pretty good
86 on Meta. Wow. I was betting on 82-83 max. Good job MS. Finally a W.
Its funny to have redfall/starfield as exclusives but if MS produces good games they are coming on PS lol. I am sure new doom would be good too
We'll see how it fares and Sonys saying they're releasing big titles starting next year but, man, five years into the consoles lifecycle? We'll what the competition fares beginning with Ghost of Yotei
@dskatter @somnambulance take one glance at their comment history easy to discern who the fanboy in the room is. Take it with a pinch of salt.
@somnambulance Kinda Funny Games has it at a 6.5
@IOI So did Pure Xbox apply the Xbox tax to their review?
@BeyondKnight Most reviews are looking like Xbox finally has a critical hit on their hand, baffling that Xbox waited til after GotY candidates could be announced to release the game.
@dskatter Oh man, I’m about ready to drop all my other games I’m playing currently to go all-in on Indy after watching the Electric Playground review. I’m so glad Xbox finally has a first party game that’s probably for me this generation! I haven’t been so excited to own an Xbox since Halo Infinite. This reviewing so well beats the Hi-Fi Rush shadow drop for me.
@somnambulance Thankfuly I’m not in the middle of any major games right now. Finished Metaphor and Stellar Blade (finally!) last week, so I’ve been just been casually playing some Forza Horizon 3 here and there. I’ll probably go back to Mario and Luigi Brothership to pass the time till Indy becomes playable for the plebes who didn’t pay extra.
@Jaxx420 I usually don’t comment-stalk but since this guy did I snuck a peek. Yowza. Also, it amuses me that I’ve been an XBox owner for longer than they’ve had an account on this site.
Yeah, interesting the Purexbox review, but all opinions are valid. The 3 gaming sitesI follow in Spain, two have given a 9/10 and 87/100. One still pending, but overall it seems pretty good generally.

@Toot1st well, when that score is achieved by reviews ranging from a 6/10, to several perfect scores, with some in between… that’s kinda all over the place.
@MeanBeanEgg Well for one example...on the indy article on pushsquare your words
"The amount of salt on Pure Xbox because they gave it a 6/10 is so funny."
And then your other comments on said article have literally been removed on there because of your fanboy trolling
Thanks for the roundup. I'll play it on Series X (using Game Pass Ultimate) and looking forward to it! It seems a very solid one even though like any other video game (including games rated 10/10), it won't appeal to everyone.
If I don't start Indiana Jones next week is because I'm still busy with Ghostwire Tokyo, a game I'm loving and that was rated 6/10 on Push Square, by coincidence the same score given to Indiana Jones by Pure Xbox. The Xbox version is rated 82/100 on Metacritic (20 reviews). Indiana Jones is rated 86/100 (47 reviews).
@oopsiezz "@jesse_dylan I never said..."
I never said what you said I said on the other thread either. We all should try to read before reacting. 😉

@Banjo-
Ghostwire Tokyo is an excellent game, not many hold in the memory long term when you play so many but that one has for me
Removed - trolling/baiting
@PurvisP Absolutely agree (with both comments 😁). I need to unlock some more stuff, but I beat the end last night and it touched me. It has that power to hold in the memory long term like few others. The topics are deep and the gameplay is fun. Japanese/Asian have this way to approach certain topics in a deeper way, more spiritually.
@dskatter I’m going to put DQ3 and Stalker 2 on hiatus, possibly Nine Sols, depending on if I get through it this weekend. I’m going to be trying. Game Pass has hit me hard the last three weeks. Glad I came back for the November line-up. Still can’t believe my most played game on Xbox this year was Guitar Hero 3!
@MeanBeanEgg That doesn't even make sense. I have already told you using other words what they are telling you now. The thread you are referring to must be one of the many you have trashed with different accounts created at the same time and that had half of the comments removed. Impossible to remember them all.
@MeanBeanEgg says one of the biggest trolls on pure xbox.

Every reviewer is entitled to their opinions. I don't like herd reviewers that just give a game a good score because it was made by a specific developer, in a specific series, or because everyone else says it is good. Everyone has different tastes and some people don't like certain games. Nothing wrong with that. I tend to use reviews as general guidance. Meaning I don't bother looking at a game where everyone is scoring it below 6 out of 10. Anything equal or higher means I will consider the game based on what I see in the community once it has released. There are some games that score well but just don't seem to connect with gamers and then there are others that score OK, but really build a following.
Given Machine Games history and the review scores I am apt to give Indy play time on GamePass to see if I enjoy it, If I really like it I will pick it up on sale at some point when the price is equal to the value I am getting from the game.
There is no way I buy a game at full price anymore. Prices have gone to a state where I cannot justify purchasing games on day one that are usually bug ridden, messes. I don't expect that from this game, but after the Cyber Punk fiasco I no longer take the chance.
Seems like every critic in their right mind is loving this game!
