Believe it or not, it's actually been 935 days since Halo's Master Chief skin was last present in Fortnite! That date was June 3rd of 2022, but as a special Christmas treat, a bunch of Halo items (including that skin) have just reappeared.
That's obviously great news for any Halo fans who love playing Fortnite, but the controversy stems from the previously unlockable "Matte Black" skin that came with the main one. In the past, if you played just one game of Fortnite with the Master Chief skin on Xbox Series X|S, you'd also get the Matte Black version at no extra charge.
However, that's sadly no longer the case. In a statement posted on social media this morning, the Fortnite Status account advised that the Matte Black skin is "no longer unlockable" as of December 2024. Here's a look:
"The Matte Black style for The Master Chief is no longer unlockable. This style is limited to players who purchased the outfit and played on an Xbox Series X|S prior to December 2024.
Any purchases of the Master Chief made today can be returned without spending a Return Ticket if they prefer, by reaching out to Player Support here: http://fn.gg/support"
As you can see, Epic Games is at least offering refunds for anyone who's disappointed by the lack of Matte Black skin, but there are a lot of Halo fans questioning why it's no longer available in the first place. Ultimately, we have no idea!
So, by all means go and spend some V-Bucks on Halo goodies in Fortnite over the holiday period, but just keep in mind that if it's the Matte Black skin that you particularly like, there's currently no way of obtaining it in any fashion.
Do you have the Master Chief skin in Fortnite? What do you think of it? Tell us in the comments.

Apparently they also disabled the play on XSX styles for the gears of war skins and the play on ps5 styles for the Horizon, Uncharted and God of War skins.
All of these where promised to be permanent unlocks available forever.
I never understood making character skins limited runs which could only be purchased or unlocked for a certain period and then never to be brought back. They’d surely make more money by having all the character skins on the shop?
@Techno92LFC for fomo obviously, if people think this is the only chance they'll be more likely to buy it than if it were permanently available. Epic is big on trying to manipulate rmt
Well, I don’t think it’s good that they are offering refunds. Instead they should be honouring their promise.
It’s another reason why digital purchases and digital games are a gray area. They say it will be available forever. Well, one day they’ll shut down the whole game and none of these skins will be available.
Are they telling the truth when they call us “owners” of the skin? 😅
@Techno92LFC Call Of Duty keeps all skins available except licenced operators like Spawn or Reya Ripley for purchase Fortnite has a pretty scummy system.
@Kienda Cod for all of its faults at least keeps 90% of their skins aside from the battlepass content available to buy for ever pretty much I can even go buy skins for MW 2019 or Cold War or even earlier games like Black Ops 4 though Black Ops 4 had a system similar to Fortnite.
They’ve backtracked. The Matte Black style is unlockable again.
@Kisrah internet outrage wins again!
@Eddie_Richtoffen I’ve not played a CoD for years, but that sounds the way I’d like it to be.
As a parent, having limited time skins and FOMO is hard for kids to resist. Thankfully we trained them away from games like Fortnite and onto more meaningful stuff. (Not that I dislike Fortnite) but a few Battle Passes were enough for them in the end.
