You may or may not be aware that Xbox offers two different kinds of ways to turn off your console in 2024. The first of these is called "Shutdown (energy saving)", while the other is called "Sleep" and is more like a standby option.
As part of the Xbox 'Year in Review' feature that was unveiled yesterday, it's been revealed that 66% of "opted-in" console owners are using the energy saving setting right now, meaning 34% are sticking with the Sleep option. This is despite the proper shutdown feature using up to 20x less power according to Microsoft.

Why would this be? Well, Sleep does come with various benefits, such as the ability to instantly boot to the dashboard rather than waiting a few seconds for it to load up, and you can also wake up the console remotely - such as when you're lying in bed and you want to boot into Xbox Remote Play on your mobile device, for example.
If you're not making use of this though, it's definitely worth at least considering switching over to the Shutdown (energy saving) option. To do this, head to Settings, look for Power Options, and you can change it in there. You'll even find the ability to adjust your "Active Hours" so that the console remains on standby just at certain times of the day!

I use remote play on steam deck far too frequently, so I keep using standby mode
I wish it had the option to choose when you power down like on PS.
It is a much simpler system for those times when you just want to leave it doing something.
Yeah I've used that always why would I want my Xbox just wasting electric for no reason common sense!
I was leaving it in Shutdown, but then I could never remotely install games. Also, game updates weren't being installed. Because I haven't been playing frequently this year, whenever I would boot it up, there'd be gigabytes of game updates to download and install. I opted to leave it in Sleep mode during the day and let it Shutdown at night. Now I have the best of both worlds.
I leave mine on sleep suits me, think it costs me maybe £12 a year more.
I don’t. Football stadiums can have their lights on 7 days a week, I’ll use what power I like regardless of it’s ‘environmental’ impact.
I do full shutdown and then turn the plug off at the wall. I'd say its a fire safety thing ...
But then I have youtube on in the background while I sleep and my TV remote, phone and PS4 controller in bed next to me
@kevinm360 you sleep next to your phone ? that’s a lot of EMF radiation you’re taking in
Need another option added to poll:
Turn off at socket when not using.
@nomither6 Having kids is overrated haha
@Ricky-Spanish 😂
I use it since I've read about it here.
I’ll pay the ten cents a year extra on my utility bill to have a faster start time, I’m cool with that.
Like how the poll here works out at 34%🤣🤣🤣🤣
I use it for mine.
No way, the poll says 34% too haha
I use energy saver since I don’t use remote play. Less money spent and apparently it’s more sustainable.
Series S and it's low power use in general are amazing. It's not at the Switches level of efficiency, but for Microsoft? It's pretty damn good.
I just use sleep hasn't really hurt my power bill lmao I've turned every energy saving feature off on my consoles and pc 😂
I've used it for years now, see no point in leaving it in sleep mode(why would I want to waste electricity on having the Xbox boot up slightly faster, just makes no sense) and I prefer to keep my electrical bills to a minimum where possible.
I use sleep because I want my premium console to feel premium.
Can't say I'm concerned with how much energy my game consoles use, they are already highly efficient compared to a gaming PC and not even a blip on the radar compared to large appliances.
@lumothesinner same. I use remote play so have to use the standby mode. Being able to install remotely so the game is ready to go when you boot up is also a boon.
But as @Medic_alert said I really don’t understand why they don’t give us the option of which each time we power off the console, there are times I know I’m not going to need standby but it’s too clunky to go into the settings and change it each time.
Shutdown all the way, like I do with everything but my phone. Turn that s-t off when not in use.
My internet isn't that great so I use full shutdown. The last thing I want is a game update to suddenly slow down a movie I'm watching on Hulu or Netflix or whatever.
I do a lot of remote play so I don’t do energy saving.
It starts up so quickly it’s just as easy just to turn it off at the mains.
It really depends on the week and how much I’m playing. My Sonos surround sound system and LG C1 tend to interact strangely and have some start up issues with the Xbox when in shutdown mode.
If I had a good internet signal outside my house, I'd use the Active Hours feature to play remotely. I'm not a fan of the standby mode as the energy consumption seems too high for my tastes.
Flick power off at wall like everything else I'm not using
Standby. I don't wanna turn it on for it to say a game needs a 40GB update before I can play. Unfortunately it often doesn't update games in standby despite being set to.
Sleep mode. What do I need to save energy for? It's not like we are gonna run out.
On the X1 the sleep mode was far better since if you used shutdown it would take a few minutes to get the X1 up to speed to see what games you have to play. The series Xbox has a better restart mode, but unfortunately any quick resume games don't tend to work after a shutdown. Yes the Xbox is using power but the cost savings of the shutdown is minimal.
I'm sort of using power saving indirectly. The TV for the Xbox is mostly dedicated to the console, so I have it setup to shut off when the TV shuts off.
Sleep. Gotta get those carbon footprint numbers up !
It wouldn't matter if I switched to power saving mode anyways, I never turn my Xbox off unless it resets for a firmware update. 🤷♂️
I clocked over 5,600hrs of playtime this year. Likely played just as much if not more the year before and the year before that, pretty much since I got it at launch. The rest of the time my console has been on but sitting either on the dashboard or on the internet browser where I watch movies and shows.
Just goes to show how good the quality is of these consoles. Long gone are the days of RROD. At least 30,000hrs running time and not a single issue with it.
I hate the planet, so I use sleep mode. Am I doing this right?
In Energy Saving mode, the Series X still uses power (0.5 watt).
Why does the fan seemingly randomly whirr for a few minutes, the disk tray clunk and an external usb drive power up?
There really should be a complete power down mode, rather than having to switch it off at the mains.
I've got mine in energy saving mode as it saves power, and I don't experience any downsides. Compared to the previous generation power on from shutdown is about 5 seconds, and from sleep it's about 3 so I don't notice a difference.
My LG TV and Xbox are quite temperamental when booting up from shutdown. Sleep keeps the HDMI signal alive, lol
The amount of energy we're talking about here is so minuscule it's hardly worth mentioning. I haven't powered up my Series X in several months but it's been sitting there in standby mode all this time. I guess I'll somehow endure the few extra pennies on my power bill lol
i use energy saving mode and have it turn off after an hour.
wish i could do the same on ps5 but that will only go into rest mode after an hour. theres no option for power off after an hour like there was on ps4 and ps3
