Shortly after the surprise release of Death Stranding Director's Cut on Xbox, we put out a quick comparison of the game running on Series X and S - and now the folks over at Digital Foundry have taken a closer look at the Kojima Productions title.
The good news is that the tech outlet is very impressed with how the game plays on both Microsoft machines, particularly the all-digital Xbox Series S, which more than pulls its weight here. In fact, DF says that the game is "quite remarkable" on the lower-powered Xbox console, especially when it comes to frame rates.
"Xbox Series S is absolutely fascinating. It's an accomplished port that scales very, very well indeed to the junior console. The quality mode doesn't resolve as much detail and from the resolution metrics, we can see why - it's using a dynamic resolution scaling range between 900p and 1080p.
What's quite remarkable here is that the drop to pixel count for the 4TF machine results in output frame-rate that's faster than the quality mode equivalents on Series X and PS5. And maybe that's a good thing, as the chances are the Series S owners are less likely to have VRR displays - so the closer it gets to a locked 60fps, the better."
Of course, Xbox Series X is running at a higher resolution overall — which you definitely spot — but even from our own early comparisons, the Series S version looked surprisingly similar to the more powerful Series X. This more detailed DF analysis certainly backs that up - Kojima Productions has done a fantastic job on this port.
That technical job matches the game in general as well - Death Stranding is a must-play Xbox title that scored a rare 10/10 in our recent Pure Xbox review. For more on our general thoughts of the game, and to see how the game runs on both Xbox consoles, check out our coverage down below.

If you haven't play it, so good. Should we be surprised that it's good on Series S? I played it at launch on PS4 and it ran amazingly in my experience, makes sense that it'll be great on S.
The Series S is a great little work horse... It runs and looks amazing in my opinion too.
Goes to show once more that only those Sony biased developers have a "concern" about the Series S.
While Take-Two CEO also dismissing any media made up concerns.
@Major_Player the S is a good little console. Sure it has some limitations but for £250 they are a good trade off.
But this was a base ps4 game (and would have been on Xbox one) so it should run well.
If something as good looking as this can run fairly smoothly with minimal visual sacrifices, why are there so many horrendous series S ports? Lazy developers? Bad engines? No one can claim ‘lack of priority’ since there are a lot more S’s than X’s. It’s frustrating. The box is weak compared to its big brother, yes, but not so weak as to see the myriad of Vaseline smeared, choppy stuttery titles that plague it.
Death Stranding runs natively on iPhone.
I would have questions if it didn't run well.
Aaaarrrrrrgh. I want a Series S so bad, but there's no disc drive. It's honestly the only thing it's missing for me. I would buy two of them!
Given the Series S is more powerful than a PS4 you’d expect it to be better. I’ve been playing it on the XSS and performance has been brilliant. It’s a very welcome game in the single player open world genre, an area the Xbox has been lacking in for some time.
I know Sony didn’t publish it but I wonder if Microsoft could do some sort of ‘swapsies’ with Sony for a few older titles. I’m sure it wouldn’t hurt either of their bottom lines if for example you could get Horizon Zero Dawn on Xbox and Forza Horizon 4 on PS5
