With Death Stranding Director's Cut launching out of nowhere on Xbox yesterday, we've taken a look at how the game stacks up across both current-gen Microsoft machines - and the early results are rather good.
While there certainly are differences across both Xbox Series X and S, this is a game that really looks the part on whichever Xbox console you're playing on. Performance is coming across a little smoother on Series X, but the Series S version more than pulls its weight here as well.
Given that Death Stranding has its roots in last-gen hardware on PS4, this perhaps shouldn't be a massive surprise, but it's nice to see another solid Xbox port nonetheless. Our handy comparison video up above is definitely worth a watch if you'd like to get a flavour of Kojima's weird and wonderful title on Xbox Series X|S.
However, we must issue a quick warning that you may want to avoid using Quick Resume with Death Stranding on Xbox - at least for now. There's a major bug happening at the moment that seems to mess up game saves, so it's probably worth fully quitting this one when you're done playing, at least until the team issues a fix.

Personally, I loved the story and surprisingly the gameplay clicked for me. I can see why it felt polarizing but overall, I can't wait to jump back in!
There's nothing quite like the first few hours of Death Stranding. Unfortunately after waiting for years I've played it just a few months ago on the ps4 pro, but I'm totally buying it again at some point. Decima engine is impressive on last gen hardware, should be amazing on the series.
Fantastic game. And I’m actually quite impressed by the Series S images (or disappointed in the X). I hardly see any difference.
Visually it still looks stunning and it seems like they made sensible trade offs with the Series S, it looks good, well done! Hopefully performance is great too.
I’ve been enjoying it so far, on Series X, going with the default Performance mode. Looks more than good enough, though I might try my own comparison with Graphics mode later. Great stuff.
Enjoying it all over again on Xbox. So happy!
Don't get me wrong, the series x is great, but I am still so genuinely impressed by how games look and play on the series s. For the same price as a Nintendo Switch you can play every modern console game (except the sony exclusives obviously), usually at a comparable frame-rate, just with marginally reduced visual quality. What an incredible value! Sometimes I wonder why I payed the extra $200.
@burntends I was very impressed by how good a lot of games ran and looked on my Series S. Lots of FPS boost support as well. Only thing it's missing is X enhancement support and there's a few FPS boost games that will only run enhanced on a Series X, but outside of that it's quite impressive. Very cool for a smaller, cheaper, lower power console that I got setup with an attached flip-lid monitor. Out of all the XS games I played only a few seemed to struggle on the S, and even then it wasn't bad.
All of the sudden it's a great game now. Lmao you can't make it up.
@Doublecell I think it's one of these games that either clicks for you or it doesn't. I wouldn't say it's bad nor that it is the best game ever. Best way to describe it is, it's a kojima.game through and through.
@GotRedOnMe73 I played the game for several hours last night on graphics mode and honestly it runs so smooth, it targets 60fps as opposed to locked 60fps on performance mode but I never noticed any dips in frames. I do have a tv that has VRR so don’t know if that has helped or not.
@MaccaMUFC nice one, I’ll definitely be giving it a look 😃
Boring game... On Xbox now.
I really hope there is demo... Frankly , this game is a hit or miss... But ,yes it's true that most of the games are repetitive... But this one ... Yuk !
I have to admit I've always wanted to play death stranding but won't ever purchase anything from Sony ever again, I thought I'd missed out on a genuine kojima classic (I enjoy his weird storytelling ways) and then all of a sudde it was on xbox and not only that it was on sale for 17.49 on day 1... 50% off for a brand new (to me) game was to much of a steal to pass up and I'm glad I didn't, it won't please everyone and I do understand why, in my opinion it's amazing, I love the desolation of it all, graphics are great and performance is superb on srsX, my only gripe is the Sony computer entertainment splash banner on startup, why is that there? Kojima owns the IP now....let's wait and see if we get the sequel
