Despite some teething issues yesterday following its launch, Starfield Shattered Space is now getting played by a whole bunch of Xbox and PC users, and we thought it'd be a good idea to bring you some early impressions!
It's definitely nice to see so much positivity out there already. Looking at the Starfield Reddit community, a lot of the top posts are praising how much fun the Shattered Space DLC is, with some even going as far as calling it a "must play".
Clearly the vibe is pretty good over on the Starfield Reddit right now, but it's not like there aren't quite a few grumbles to found as well - and that's particularly apparent if you head over to the Starfield page on the Steam store.
In fact, Shattered Space has a "Mixed" rating on there as things stand, and here are some of the more negative reviews:
Enzevil on Steam: "This is sadly not what I expected from Bethesda, and is just more Starfield like the base game. I was hoping they would take more of the feedback into consideration regarding their story, writing, characters and quest design, but sadly it doesn't look great."
Woldelele on Steam: "Nothing substantially new has been added. We just got new quests in a "hand crafted" world-space with more of the same exhausting dialogue, that's it. For $30 dollars, it really isn't worth it, especially if you were looking for something to overhaul or spice up Starfield's core experience."
The big thing to keep in mind about the "Mixed" rating on Steam, though, is that some of the reviews are being submitted about the base game rather than the DLC itself, so it doesn't properly represent the full picture. The two examples above are about the expansion, of course, but in some cases people are downvoting it without even playing.
It's a similar situation on the Xbox Store, although 58% of the reviews on there have given it a 5/5 so far.
We're still only just getting stuck into Starfield Shattered Space here at Pure Xbox, so we'll need a bit more time before publishing our full review - look out for it on the website in the near future. If you've been playing the expansion, we'd love to know what you think about it down in the poll and the comments section below!

Is there limitations on when you can start the DLC? I have no finished the main quest yet (and I don't think I am anywhere near the end of it tbh)
@ZeD You can start the DLC after completing Starfield's first main mission, but you're recommended to be Level 35 as well.

@FraserG Thanks. I think I am just under Level 25 and on a planet trying to find an artefact lol
Will do a few more missions first I think.
@FraserG - Thanks for that info! I'm not even level 20 so I've got some work to put in.
I havent been able to even start the dlc yet despite having three characters that meet the level & prerequisite quest requirements. Non of them are modded as i was saving all that till after this dlc.
I even watched a YouTube vid & followed exact planet start & jump sequence but were he got the space station to start dlc i just got a different random encounter each time. I can fly to the dlc planet but no one will talk to me due to not getting quest start.
Wasted an hour or so trying different jumps or fixes (& this is addition to time wasted on lookup fail error.)
Right now i am redownloading the entire game but i am beginning to think its just not worth the effort. Not a great way to make a good first impression & Bethesda are really testing my patience at this point.
@RiverGenie you're lucky my save games won't even load 🤪
@RiverGenie I had the same problem, and saw a lot of people addressing the same thing in Youtube comments.
Most of the time, the missing ingredient was just... downloading the DLC. I thought that 18gb update was it, but it's just an update. You need to go to the store, and install Shattered Space.
After that, I just jumped and immediately found the distress call...
Is the DLC free on GamePass or do you have to buy it AS WELL AS GamePass? I may try it if free, although it's been so long I'm not sure I can be bothered to go back or not.
@StonyKL dlc isn’t free.
It’s £30
I'm enjoying it so far. Dose feel like your Dragonborn/Far Harbor/the Pitt sort of expansion. Isolated from the main "map" and removed from the primary narrative. Got this spooky vibe to it, some of the fights have been tricky on my difficulty level, and I'm finding the characters a lot more compelling than I was expecting for space cultists.
I'm not entirely sure the founder of the religon wasn't just "really goth" based on his picture.
Exhausting Dialogue? I will never understand people that play RPGs and complain about the role play part. I mean there is bad dialogue in games and that is a different complaint but there are people that play RPGs and have no idea wtf is going on because they skip dialogue and cutscenes.
I will say I feel souls games always felt (to me) like they were designed for those people. As in atmospheric game and rpg style ui/system but the story is buried in optional lore (and is somewhat shoestring anyway).
Anyway i do hope the dlc pushes the main story forward.
I’ve just started and about to land on planet.
So far so good.
I’m level 30 and it seems ok for me.
I opened the game last week to get back into it in prep for the DlC and it ran so badly that it made me feel sick. Maybe it is my fault for having a Series S.
@RamiBalek nope dlc was installed. One of the steps i tried before my current full reinstall was to untick dlc via manage game & reinstall as you describe. Sadly for me same result hence current last resort full reinstall.
Will get to try again sometime this evening & hope i didnt waste my money.
I mean, I'm not sure what people were expecting.
A Phantom Liberty happens once in a blue moon.
This game was always a travesty too big to solve with a simple DLC.
I am thrilled to play Shattered Space. It really is a great expansion and I'm having so much fun with it. Running around with Andreja is especially good.
I feel like I'd want to start a new save which I can't be bothered to do atm so I'll give it a miss for now. Cool that people are enjoying it. Hopefully they keep fleshing the game out. While very big in a lot of ways it still like it was missing a lot. Tons of potential there though.
Tell you what I thought, crap
Of it is as good as the main game I’ll spend a lot of hours into it. And I’m surprised to find it’s free for me.
Now only to find some time… I still have a backlog of 28 games.
I'm loving it. Finished the whole base game, 100% achievments and just started shattered space yesterday. It is amazing how beautiful that game is, story is interesting as well.
There was a negative review that said "is just more Starfield". Well, yeah, that's kind of the idea. What did he expect? lol.
Must play for sure, just like the base game.
About the recommended level 35, it is not locked for lower levels it just will be way more difficult, but it is available if you want to risk it.
@RamiBalek I had exactly this issue. Downloaded the 18gb and assumed that was it, spent half an hour grav jumping, got annoyed and then realised I hadn't even downloaded the Shattered Space file!
@OldGamer999 What are your thoughts now Bubba?
Update : So after reinstalling the entire game & shattered space dlc I am still unable to access the dlc content on the 3 characters i tried. However i have a level 25 character that hasn't finished the main quest and the space station showed up for her.
As far as i can tell the only difference between this character & the other three apart from level is that she isnt Starborn yet. The others have gone through Unity multiple times & i wonder if that has messed things up somehow????
Anyhow at least i can now get to the dlc on one character once she has leveled up a bit. To be honest though all this faffing around has really demotivated me to play. So for now I am going to step back so i can decompress a bit and go in with a more open mind sometime in the near future.
The question is, is it worth £30? I think that is quite expensive for a DLC and I’d expect it to be at ‘Blood and Wine’ level, both in scale and quality. If I decide not to bother I’ll just buy Broken Sword - Shadow of the Templars: Reforged instead, an actual full game that costs less than the Shattered Space add-on.
I'm a level 0 so I'm guessing I cannot play it. Honestly, I thought Starfailed was going to be great when it launched. I played about three hours of it and thought it was horrible. Redfail was better.
Absolute broken piece of crap, 2 hrs ive been trying to get my game to even load ,and I'm not starting again, bye bye starfield were done, the game is totally broken, mods don't even load properly anymore, stinking pile of garbage.
@Shalooda a joke then just like starfield must still be a broken game
Nice to see that are plenty of people actually enjoying the game rather than just presuming it's bad without playing. I'm enjoying my time with it so far. I feel like post pandemic the majority of very good games just aren't good enough for the "hardcore" fanbase across all systems. It has to be 10/10 or it's trash. I think digital foundry has a lot to answer for in players over analysing sometimes very minimal things. I didn't even know what FPS, frame pacing, RT and upscaling tech were until I watched their videos. I think I was happier when I didn't know any better. Now it feels like almost everyone online is an expert to either back up or trash a game.
DLC can’t save this game. It’s a beautiful game but it’s so boring it’s unreal and it’s full of cringe ‘modern audience’ characters. I dropped it and will never go back. I think the biggest achievement of Starfield is making a game set in space and being able to travel to thousands of planets so dull. That took real talent.
So far trying to get perspective from fan reviews has been pointless. It's either ,spectacular, or a monumental let down.
Emils truly horrific writing I guess it's a problem again and reskinned guns?
Weird to wait on reviewers for perspective
Times must be tough when purexbox is quoting random players and not the actual critics.
Time to dust off my 200 hour save and get back to it I reckon.
@Dman10 Well honestly the critics are a joke these days for the most part. Too many of them have clear biases and agendas. I struggle to relate to most of them.
@tom_q Same but im on Series X. Deleted the game. Maybe I will try it next year
