The Callisto Protocol always seemed like an ambitious project, especially from a brand-new developer crafting an entirely new IP. When the game finally shipped in late 2022, the end product perhaps fell a little short of that ambition - but a new chat with the game's lead dev has explained the situation in a bit more detail.
Glen Schofield, The Callisto Protocol's director, recently talked about the game's development (thanks, PCGamesN) - and it sounds like things didn't go that smoothly working with publisher Krafton. Key content was cut from the game — including four bosses and two different enemy types — and generally speaking it sounds like the team was in crunch mode during 2022.
"In October or September ‘21, I was told ‘You’re going to get the time. Put whatever you want into the game.’ So I spent that Christmas holiday just designing and coming up with ideas with some of the guys. And then January comes around and some of the [Krafton] folks come over and they just said ‘no no no. It’s December 2022."
Schofield also said that, whilst the first few years of development went quite well, going public with the game put a strain on the teams involved in making The Callisto Protocol.
"I really liked working with them for the first couple of years. It was really the last year or so. We went public and it put an awful strain on the company, on the board of directors, and everyone else. And then they [Krafton] put the strain on us probably."
In the end, The Callisto Protocol arrived at the tail end of 2022 to decent reviews - but nothing quite like the game's main inspiration; Dead Space. We largely agreed with the community's mixed feelings on TCP, saying that the game felt "uneven" in our full review.
Thoughts on this, folks? Tell us how you got on with The Callisto Protocol down below.

You mean PlayStation Plus' The Callisto Protocol. It was on Plus like a year ago, the difference is, out of the millions that grabbed it, they still can do that right now.
This won't be available to game pass users in a month or 2 so it most certainly won't be "Xbox Game Pass's The Callisto Protocol" then either.
@andrewsqual
Chill, man. It's an Xbox news site. 😂
@andrewsqual And this has what to do with the actual article in question?
@andrewsqual complete agree. it's really annoying. from the headline, you'd think the game was a Game Pass exclusive. or at least launched on Game Pass day 1?
Are we really surprised? This happens so very often just so cut material can be sold as DLC.
DLC really hurt gaming in lot ways.
It doesn't really matter though in the end, does it, @outswimmingtheflood? Push does it too. I often read a game coming to the PS4 or PS5, and then have to look it up to see whether it is coming to the Xbox too, only to find it is. It's just the sites way of speaking to their particular audience, and stoking interest. Ultimately though, it really does not matter...
I’ll come in ‘on topic’ instead, don’t worry! 😂 The game was actually one of my favourite games I played last year when I finally got round to it. Sure it wasn’t as good as Dead Space, I thought of it as a Dead Space 3 title instead and I thought it was pretty brilliant really. I guess crawling through the ducts got a little bit repetitive, but in the end it was a tiny quibble! I would have lived to have seen what the game could have been if there hadn’t been so much crunching at the end, but all in all it deserves as many people to play it as possible and the release on Gamepass is only a good thing!
I actually enjoyed the game more than Dead Space. I know I’m weird, don’t attack.
Whose idea was it to use melee against monsters ? That’s something for emergencies
If you ditched the game at release, it has gotten so much better. It is definitely worth a revisit. I played thru again recent and the updated game mechanics and power level settings has made it so much more enjoyable. I would hope for a 2nd one.
