Back in July, Microsoft revealed that a new tier of Xbox Game Pass would be arriving in the near future in the form of Xbox Game Pass Standard, and it's just begun rolling out today for all members of the Xbox Insider preview program.
For now, Xbox Insiders can sign up to this tier for just $1 per-month, but it'll transition to a $14.99 price point when it becomes available for everyone. The idea behind the new tier is to provide access to online multiplayer along with hundreds of Xbox Game Pass titles, but certain games will be held back until a later date.
"Some games coming to Game Pass Ultimate (day one games or other game entries) will not be immediately available with Game Pass Standard and may be added to the library at a future date (can be up to 12 months or more and will vary by title). We’ll continue to share with all Game Pass members when games are being added and available to play for each plan."
Those who are interested in joining can head to the Xbox Insider app on console and look for the Xbox Game Pass Standard option. A select number of titles will be available, with more to be added throughout the preview period.
Obviously if you're already an Xbox Game Pass member you won't be able to join, aside from if you're subscribed to PC Game Pass or Game Pass for Console - or Game Pass Core with less than two months stacked onto your account.

Somehow, "play an unspecified selection of games at an undetermined future date, possibly, for just one dollar" doesn't roll off the tongue like the old slogan.
"Play less games, much later, for the same price you paid last year" has a better ring to it, doesn't it?
The pricing split kind of reminds me of those used listings on eBay and Amazon. You know, the one where you see
Used: Acceptable condition- may be worn and show signs of wear, missing original package, missing accessories, device is tested to function, includes base components only. $449.99. Next to the new in box one for $479.99.
Remember kids, Game Pass Standard is not to be confused with Game Pass Diet, which is entirely different. Oh and it's NOTHING like Game Pass Infinite. It's also not exactly like Game Pass XL, but it's close. On the other hand, Game Pass Ordinary won't be available until 2025, so in the meantime just subscribe to Game Pass: San Francisco. Hope that helps!
Let me get this straight
Game Pass Core - Online multiplayer. Couple dozen games.
Game Pass Standard - Online multiplayer. No day ones
Game Pass Ultimate - Everything
@GhanaViking what about game pass console
@Scirius that’s been retired and replaced by the Standard tier.
@WhiteRabbit I apologize. Please allow us to give you a free 1 month subscription to Game Pass Pretty Decent.
The whole subscription economy still blows my mind, that it exists. Heaven forbid the internet goes out for a few days. People might have to learn to read books again.
#papercuts
MS working hard to destroy the value that Gamepass once offered.
@NEStalgia @armondo36 @WhiteRabbit Good ones!
Game Pass was a great and easy to understand proposition at an affordable price a couple of years ago.
But sadly, here we are now, with MS being the laughingstock of the subscription model with tiers that are harder to understand than a Kojima written plot 😂.
Any price for subsidized gamepass is good. So gamers are accustomed to cheap and don’t want to pay full price anyways. Even if GP was 70$ a month, it would still be a great deal. People and young lads used to have to work harder buy new games or visit GameStop for used. Even so GP is still a better deal and good value. I’ll still pay full price for my disks though!
@GhanaViking don’t forget Game Pass PC - costs less than console but offers much more including Day 1 games
@Cakefish it’s only been retired if you don’t still subscribe. Otherwise Game Pass Console™️ remains in perpetuity (or until Microsoft cuts them off). Might as well be called Game Pass FOMO edition
@Xbox_Dashboard Muh old Kindle Touch is my best friend during these frequent outages we've been having. That and a nice cozy tea.
Part of me is considering finally upgrading to one with a light with some of the flying I've been doing recently. But I'm not sure yet.
@WhiteRabbit oh that's GamePass Laissez-Faire.
If Xbox is going to succeed they need to be the ones to pull the trigger on free online. They’ll be seen as an industry leader and innovator.
Just charge like $12 for Gamepass and only have one tier.
@WhiteRabbit @VoidPunk They're still trying to "innovate" paying annually to use your computer.
@themightyant "Might as well be called Game Pass FO
MOEdition"You got the first two characters right.
@armondo36 Wait, I'm subscribing to Game Pass Vista.1 Professional. what's included?
@NEStalgia a free demo of Game Pass Vista professional 2, an autographed picture of Phil's mansion, some Xbox 360 socks, and access to Game Pass Sorry, a program that informs you about the latest game delays before anyone else!
@armondo36 Oh, nvm I thought it came with a new colored controller.
@NEStalgia it got delayed.
Also, even though it's an xbox controller, it's been announced for PS5.
But that version wasn't delayed, so they all have theirs already.
@NEStalgia don’t forget Game Pass Starter, Game Pass Home Basic, Game Pass Home Premium, Game Pass Business, or Game Pass Enterprise. Also, please remember that in a year or two, Game Pass 7 will be replaced by Game Pass 8 and 8.1, and none of your old Game Pass devices will be compatible. If that’s not confusing enough, Game Pass 10 will soon be introduced, and then be shut down because developers chose the more popular platforms.
Ugh. Microsoft be Microsofting. https://youtu.be/hqSm7lWn-84?si=cqXEXqHa6M2dx3VP
@HarmanSmith still good value especially if you use the rewards points like i have. So have not paid for it in over 8 years . Best 15 minutes a day spent doing boring searches ,quests,
@NEStalgia ha! 😂😂😂
@VoidPunk
Nintendo had free online up until the 3rd year of Switch!
@AccessibleDaydream Game Pass 10 was supposed to be the last Game Pass upgraded forever, but then Game Pass 11 arrived one day and said you have to throw out the Xbox you bought 2 years ago because it needs one with a different chip.
LOL I can't stand anything Mac, but, I forgot about those commercials and they were sooo spot on! That was one of the best marketing moments in PC history.
@Spider-Kev In fairness, Nintendo kind of bait and switched. Yeah the fine print said you'd have to pay for online since day 1 but it wasn't ready yet, but for the masses the bought in and then suddenly had to pay annually for what they already had. When Sony tried "but the fine print said it on day 1" with Helldivers 2 PSN logins on PC they got rightly blasted. Nintendo gets a medal.
@NEStalgia
I had my switch day 1 and I don't remember ever seeing that notice.
@NEStalgia I'll call out any company, corporation or government for bullsh!t
I'm not a blind defender just because they make or do what I like sometimes.
I use my hard earned money to buy or not buy. If I don't like it, I don't buy it and voice my opinions on it.
I don't stream anything (except Pandora but that's completely different, details below) because it's a waste of money.
1: One has nothing to show for it.
2: streaming quality (audio or video) will NEVER match a physical copy
3: physical won't just randomly disappear from my shelf
*Pandora:
I lost my collection because my now ex decided to keep the money for the storage bill instead of paying it. Buying all those CDs and tapes all over again would have cost another million. Plus we were homeless (didn't know we were subletting and when they got kicked out, so did we, and she had just given birth to our son less than a week before) at the time (hence the need for storage) so we couldn't have had anything.
@Spider-Kev iirc, it was in the fine print of advertisements about the Nintendo Switch Online service.
@Spider-Kev Exactly! Most players didn't know the disclaimer was there but it was. Yeah, the notice was there for day one. It's been an eternity since "Switchmas" but the online, and games like Splatoon 2's testfire early on had the asterisk about an NSO subscription will be required at a future date for all online content. They always put that warning there in the fine print, but the launch was delayed for years and most players never read the fine print, so a lot got slammed with what they had for years being taken away and paywalled one day. But they did technically warn people.
I think i remember that, but if it is what I'm thinking it is, it was VERY poorly worded.
Up til Switch we had NNID NOT a Nintendo Online Account.
They made us change that.
So I didn't (any most likely most everyone else) realize that it'd be a PAY subsctiption.
I just thought it was the new Log-In / Account type thing!
@Spider-Kev Yeah, anyone that follows gaming intently knew it was pending. And the pay service was supposed to launch a few months after the console. But then it didn't and ran, what, 2 or 3 years before going paid?
But the average consumer let alone the average NINTENDO consumer? Everyone had to have been blindsided but a surprise paywall years into the system. If it were any other company it would have been like Matrick 2013 all over again. Even at the time on NL we all thought Nintendo just created a disaster of backlash. But no, not Nintendo. Nintendo and Disney can do whatever they want to people and people will thank them for doing it. I have a soft spot for Nintendo, but oh how I hate the company behind it.
@NEStalgia
I have NEVER even used a free trial for it!
That's how against it I am!
Who is running this company and why are they running it into the ground?
