Update: This issue has now been fixed, with the official Xbox status returning to "up and running".
Original story: Xbox has been suffering from some technical difficulties today, with lots of players reporting that they've been unable to connect to Xbox Live (or the "Xbox Network") over the past couple of hours. You're not alone!
This has been confirmed as a "major outage" by Team Xbox, described as the following:
"You may not be able to sign-in to your Xbox profile, may be disconnected while signed in, or have other related problems. Features that require sign-in like most games, apps and social activity won't be available."
If you're reading this a bit later and still experiencing the issue, it's probably because the problem hasn't been fixed yet! You can check the status of the Xbox servers over on the official "Xbox Status" webpage.
For those who are happy to play offline, we've got a guide about how to play Xbox games offline elsewhere on Pure Xbox, but keep in mind that you may face issues if you haven't set your Xbox as your "Home" console in the past.
Have you been having problems with Xbox today? Let us know down in the comments section below.

That means Forza Motorsport won't be playable...
Nice one Xbox you utter utter tools!
For anyone seeing this who may be unaware, if you go into network settings and go offline then you'll be able to sign into your console and play games which don't need an online connection, even many Gamepass games
@ErgoGnomic look at my comment above
Tried to login to check out Season 1 of XDefiant and kept getting a message. Hopefully it gets fixed soon.
@carlos82 you’re a lifesaver! I switched to offline mode and I was able to access my account in my offline games! Thanks for the help
@carlos82 : You can't switch profiles in offline mode though, so if your saves are sitting under a secondary profile on the console you're out-of-luck (which definitely seems like a major oversight).
@101Force Is that because the other user hasn't been set up to have that Xbox as it's home console? Looking at mine I can freely sign in and out of accounts but I never set the other one as a home console.
Overall the system definitely needs looking at and made more user friendly for such situations
@TheBigBlue no problem, have fun
What sh*t show from Microsoft, they took their sweet time to finally update the Xbox status here in UK (I did a hard reset on my XSX, thinking my console had issues). I couldn't even sign out from my profile, dammit Microsoft!
This is where Xbox and game pass get it wrong.
No online no game pass games to play as far as I can tell even if download as they require a check.
No cloud gaming as well.
Bring back the old days. I shall just play Switch instead.
@OldGamer999 I was just playing Like a Dragon Gaiden from Game Pass normally.
That stinks. I saw the issue was reported on the app. I was probably going to play today, but I guess not until the issue gets solved in hopefully a few hours. Why does almost everything require a connection to be played nowadays? It’s just so unnecessary and causes a ton of disappointment and frustration like what this outage is doing.
@deadmaker
I tired that but it wouldn’t let me as it tried to check my game pass account validation to play the game.
Shall try harder.
@pip_muzz
That means Forza Motorsport won't be playable
If only. I can't access anything from my digital library because my XSX is not set as my Home console, poor show .😒
@carlos82 : Maybe — I'm not sure. I have four accounts on my console (for our four family members) and while I can tell you none of them are setup with other consoles in any shape or form, I can't confirm right now if the three we can't access are actually setup with our console as their home console specifically. When the network goes back online I'll check.
Xbox really needs a better off line solution.
Maybe if you have game pass and the console is your home console like mine is, it should give you the benefit of the doubt and let you play.
This crap goes all the way back the Xbox one DRM days they tried to implement.
@Sol4ris
Mine is set has home console but if it’s offline I don’t seem to be able to play game pass games.
@OldGamer999 yeah it certainly needs a better solution, for Switch it's something like an automatic 7 day check in for NSO, I'm not sure what it is for Gamepass, I've seen 30 days for PC but nothing about console, though I'm curious why I and another here can play Gamepass games but you can't
Just gone through the offline process and it seems to work.
That process should be automated and make life simple for people. Us geeky gamers probably ok, but the average public won’t know.

@OldGamer999
Same here, I can't access GamePass games either. The real issue is with the digital libraries we bought. From a company pursuing the always online model so aggressively, Microsoft should do much better..
@carlos82
I don't have anything to give you, so have my like, good sir.
@OldGamer999 yeah it's baffling why it simply just doesn't ask you to sign in offline when it fails to connect
Really glad it’s not one of those rare times I actually get game time. I tried signing in just for my son because it wasn’t syncing his data, I couldn’t sign in at all, he had no issues but he’s not connected to Live.
@OldGamer999 Count me in on that, it's ridiculous, what are they thinking.
@Sol4ris
My Switch library is all digital and that seems to get around it.
As it does not check every time and every game you play as long the Switch is your home console you can play all your digital games ok.
I think with Xbox it’s your digital game pass games that are issue as they check that every time and every game pass game you try to play.
@carlos82
I still don’t think my game pass titles work.
But ones I own do digitally.
I think it’s because it try’s to check for your game pass validation.
My log in just worked! Give it another try!
It’s a shame all the computers at work don’t do this, so we can all go home on full pay 🤣
Well log in began working, xbox services still seem to be down
Haha meant to post that comment to the general feed. But no kidding! Also thanks for the previous advice about switching to offline
@OldGamer999 I just tried another Gamepass game and it came up with "There's a temporary network problem" but I just clicked on use offline at the bottom of the screen and it worked
@carlos82
Thank you, will try soon playing Jedi survivor at the moment as I own that game anyway.
I have to say, the homescreen is a lot more pleasant without all the ads and unwanted suggestions!!
@carlos82
You had a Sega Saturn like me.
I was even mad enough to have an imported one with clockwork knight and virtua fighter.
Cannot play Forza Horizon 5 weekly forzathon at the moment.
Well done Microsoft 👍👍👍
When was this I was playing online noproblem this morning till midday in uk
@oldhammer999
You can still play your sega saturn when xbox live goes down as well.
Haven't been able to connect all day.
Yes, the same happens to me trying to play Lies of P in XCloud (That´s the game I´m finishing right now). And I wasn´t able to play it, I also tried Fortnite and Octopath Traveler II.
Hope they can solve this problem soon.
And unlike back in the day I'm sure Microsoft won't give us anything for such a massive outage. After all, the fans and any studio not working on CoD are the ones that're paying for the Activision merger.
Got me to turn on my PS5 for the first time in way too long lol
So looks like they solved the problem. I was able to log in now.
@Tasuki You're one of the lucky few. Problems still occurring for most.
Still off, i tried to play my daily evening Diablo 4 loot runs. Man wonder what happened? They are normally not down for long. Nice not to see the ad’s haha
I was playing offline until now and tried to go online and now it worked. It seems things are starting to work again.
this issue sucks. because i can't login to my microsoft account on my xbox it seems as though i cannot use or play any of the games on my console...
i find it very odd and annoying that logging into your microsoft account is needed on your system. since when is logging into your microsoft account needed to use and play non-microsoft games and apps.
and whats even more annoying is that it seems that i need to login to my microsoft account in order to use hulu, netflix, and other media streaming apps. they have their own subscription service system so why is it that microsoft is requiring theirs?
i contacted them and they really couldn't tell me why the system was down other than that they are performing maintenance on the server that is causing world wide outages.
i would use the console in offline mode but, i'm trying to use games and apps that require online access. i demand compensation even if am able to log into my Microsoft account after this comment gets posted. for all i know they will fix the issue for me so that i will stop complaining.
In UK, I just switched on 2 mins ago and it's back online.
i got a notification from Microsoft saying that the servers are back up. finally...
now, microsoft just needs to release an update for the xbox that makes it so that you do not need a microsoft account to use non-microsoft apps.. also, they need to phase out the old xbox live services which means that they will have to release updates for the older xbox 360 games. (possibly all of them)
@carlos82 : Answering your question from earlier: The other profiles had my Xbox set as their home but I could not switch to them during the outage, although I seemed to be able to use my default profile in offline mode. It was very weird.
PSN was down yesterday, Xbox today. Weird.
@OldGamer999 I was playing Octopath traveler 2 on game pass during the entire outage.
I played for an hour or so yesterday night and didn't notice anything. The fact that a console needs a guide, which I'm going to read just in case since I forgot about it, to explain its users how to play the damn thing offline is a joke though. Microsoft should really just trust us on this and give us the means to play seamlessly offline and simplify the process.
I hope this makes people affected set their Xbox as their home Xbox. I know a lot of people who didn't set their X or S as their home after upgrading.
I don't because I'm game sharing with my kids so I couldn't play but hey, live by the loophole, die by the loophole
I was hit by this last night trying to play Elden Ring. Fortunately I could hop in to the game without any problems. Besides messages, I don't really engage in the multiplayer aspects of the game.
As a side note, I see people mentioning ads on the dashboard above. Jumping back into Elden Ring, one of the few games I have on the Series X (I'm mostly on PS5), I was astounded to see an advert for a McDonald's burger. What on earth is this crap doing there?
Hopefully it happened because there trying to sort out my bloody Forza horizon code for the dlc I bought!
@pip_muzz Is there a daily login or bonus if played yesterday? If so I completely missed that.
I'll never understand how a company as big as MS, with a cloud network as massive as MS's can have these network outages that last most of a day. Like...they have other DCs. Dozens of them. How can a main service just go totally down and take almost a full day to fix without any other failsafe? Is Xbox "Live" just running on an old Inspiron sitting under Phil's desk rather than in the replicating Azure cloud network? Did the AI's attempt an uprising and encrypted the drives? Is Xbox entirely hosted in the underwater datacenter and it took that long to get the DSV into position after checking the seals?
@jesse_dylan Yeah nobody noticed this. That's both PS and Xbox down in the same week. Can't be coincidence. Either attacks of some kind, or both of them secretly doing some security thing they are telling no one about for some reason.
I've also noticed "the internet" as a whole being weird the past week or two, page loads just stalling randomly, or timing out, for major things. Someone somewhere isn't telling us something and is hoping no one notices.
