It's been a busy start to the day, with Microsoft announcing price increases for various forms of Xbox Game Pass over the past few hours, and we won't blame you if you're getting a bit confused about all the different changes taking place!
So, we thought we'd use this opportunity to share a list of all the price increases coming to Xbox Game Pass in the near future. These begin today (July 10th) for any new members to the service, but existing members won't have to pay the new prices until September 12th. As far as we're aware (but don't quote us on this!), if your current subscription extends beyond September 12th, you won't have to pay the new prices until it expires.
We've covered this elsewhere on Pure Xbox, including more details on the new "Standard" Game Pass tier:
It's also worth mentioning that, at the time of writing, prepaid codes can still be purchased at previous, cheaper prices. If you're wanting to shack up ahead of prices rising across the board, feel free to grab some codes from our store now:
Right, so let's take a look at the list of these Xbox Game Pass price increases. You'll find separate sections for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Xbox Game Pass Core and PC Game Pass down below, with regional prices for each.
The only other thing we need to mention is that Xbox Game Pass Core is getting a few monthly changes that are specific to Argentina, India, Turkey and South Africa - more detail about those is available on the official Xbox website.
Based On These Changes, Does Game Pass Still Represent Value For Money? (1,722 votes)
- Yes, it's definitely still worth it in my opinion!
- Nobody likes price increases, but I think it's probably still worth it for me
- I thought so before, but I'm starting to question it now
- PC Game Pass is worth it, but not Xbox Game Pass
- As a Game Pass Core member, I'm still happy enough
- No, I don't think it's value for money tbh!

What do you make of these Xbox Game Pass price increases? Let us know down in the comments.
Comments 38
UK its basically £2 increase on every gamepass tier
apart from core where the yearly price has gone up
If they do anything to cause those of us that have prepaid, to lose time, I'm done.
Absolutely no way 'round that.
Guess I'll wait to resubscribe for Indiana Jones. I'm assuming this increase is to help pay for the activision buyout. Wish we could opt out of cod and not have to add cost.
@InterceptorAlpha Nothing they can do about prepaid just like last time, I'm two years ahead.
Doesn’t really change anything for me - still works out considerably cheaper and more convenient to sub for a month when there’s a day one game I want to play.
I do this with pretty much every subscription service - Netflix, Ubisoft plus, ps plus extra, Disney plus, apply tv plus. Really doesn’t seem worth it to commit to a year. Especially in the case of the video streaming services where you can often get a month or so free “trial” if you’re no longer subbed.
Does this affect any of the three month GPU prepaid cards out there?
I.e. someone bought a few cards months ago and then redeems one tomorrow. Any reduced time issues? Or is this purely for monthly, period?
Not worth it for me. At least not right now. Maybe in the Fall.
How can you buy/sub more than 1 month beside buying keys?
@dskatter As far as I'm aware, it doesn't. Here's what Xbox says:
"Recurring billing dates will not change. New prices take effect on the next recurring billing charge after September 12, 2024."
I'll be downgrading to Standard.
Don't need "Perks"
Don't need Day 1
Don't need EA Play
Dont need Cloud games
Two price increases in one year is shocking. Not happy.
@dskatter As Ultimate is staying as-is, they have to honour the amount of time that's stated on the card.
It's still worth it, Gamepass is a much better service than the one offered by Sony or Nintendo.
But I think there is a serious communication problem at Microsoft, they are creating a lot of confusion among their users.
This is absolutely ***** *****!!! I actually thought the Activision buy would be great for us, But its kicked us all in the face.
So because ive stayed loyal to xbox exclusives and played them day one. I now have to pay £20 a month because of call of ***** duty.. The games utter *****.. They should have made an Activision pass ffs.
With them giving nothing in rewards anymore and how many price increases in 3 years, Microsoft is really starting to piss me off with always hurting us. £240 a year... wow
It’s simple I’m GPU until March 2025.
And £2 is a nothing increase to me. UK.
Then if they bring the big quality AAA games that I want I stay if not I go.
It doesn’t matter if you trying to sell consoles or games pass.
You need the amazing games end of.
I think its got to a point for me where it's no longer value for money. I get my subscription as part of my phone contract which is great as I don't see any price increase right now - however no matter how many more games they add to the service I don't get more to play as my gaming is limited to how much time I have available. Add another 2000 games to the service then I'll still only play a few games a month anyway.
Same issue applies to any other forms of entertainment - watching TV, movies, sport, PS+ (and excluding non sit on my ass hobbies I have such as golf, football and gym memberships and working almost 12 hours a day) then there just isn't enough time in life to make the most of GamePass.
On its own, an additional £24 a year (plus any further increases to come) isn't the end of the world, but on top of all the other memberships in my life its not the best value for me and would probably be first to be dropped if I have to start paying for it.
But I assume MS see me as an exception to their rule otherwise they wouldn't have raised their prices.
An extra £2 a month for Day 1 releases, ability to play 'Anywhere' (inc my Gaming PC's, Samsung TV's etc ) & EA Access. I own more than 'just' an Xbox Series X where I game so Ultimate still makes sense and is still good value, even if it isn't quite the same Value it was.
I really don't know what the Confusion is though - its similar to Sony's tiered PS+
PS+ Essential - like GPCore is needed for Online Games and each offers a 'small' collection (24-36ish games a year) Sony giving 2-3 away each month, MS keeping that small collection available all year rotating games out as and when...
Game Pass Standard, like PS+ Extra offers a large collection of great games that have released over the years you may have missed but don't get Day 1 releases.
GPU is the Premium Tier offering Day 1 releases (unlike Sony's PS1-PS3 collection) as well as Game Pass PC/Cloud, EA Access etc so you can play Anywhere, not just on 'Series S/X' Consoles...
It's value will be different to everyone, but for me its still great value (if they get their games out at the quality we expect and on time). In the next 6 months, we have CoD, Avowed, Indiana Jones, MSFS24, Stalker 2 etc coming....
Still great value easy but it's abit bs that they said buying Activision etc wouldn't increase price then they do increase it 😔
Still costs 5 times less than what I'd have to pay to buy a new game. Just wish Microsoft would enter our market with pc game pass. It'd be amazing
Unfortunate for those who use Game Pass, but I can't pretend that this isn't sensible to at least some extent. Catching up with inflation (and then some, for a few extra $ of course) is necessary, but also in general, day one Game Pass games was a very bold move to make right from the beginning. Forcing you to cough up a few extra dollars to get the privilege of having games day one is a bit crappy, but I can see why they are doing it. Game Pass subs aren't increasing as fast as they want it seems to the point where there previously bold value proposition for Game Pass might have had quite a bit more profit and thus been more sensible as a product, so this was the decision they made. Greedy? Yeah, kind of. But also, Game Pass was perhaps a tad bit too generous from the start for its own good to be a truly viable product (I would think at least). The real issue is how Microsoft got everybody used to Game Pass being this crazy value proposition for so long before in an instant tearing that down right before everyone's eyes; they got people used to it being so crazy good, so now resetting that value proposition to something arguably more "realistic" just looks really bad for them.
...Also, completely underrated, but I was taking bets on if our good friends over at Push Square (who I do love, don't get me wrong) would publish an article about this despite it having nothing to do with them, just as an I-told-you-so and tooting their own horn about PS Plus's strategy vs. that of Xbox Game Pass. Sure enough, haha...
I have another two years left for Ultimate. Is it possible to top it up with another year? Or has that option gone already (I did something like buying a Turkish games with gold sub and transforming it into GPU)?
At least don't take away Console tier... Xbox always caring about their users.
What is it, £2 increase again. I'm glad I get Ultimate through EE, so unless that changes to Core, I'll continue subbing through as a Perk.
I will cancel once the increase goes into effect and resub when shattered space drops. I don’t play enough to pay extra to let it ride.
As an enthusiast it’s still good value at £15 a month as I play 20+ games a year on the service and try many more at no risk. But it also needs to be good value to people who play a lot less else they will unsubscribe. That is a problem because if there are less subscribers they will either have to increase prices yet again, or reduce value offered (costs), or both to make the same returns. That is a problem with the subscription model.
@BHPM of course Push Square is publishing an article, this is the biggest gaming news of the week and whether Game Pass or its business model succeeds will indirectly affect all gamers. It would be weirder if they DIDN’T post anything really.
They are also smart enough to realise this will be the most talked about topic all week and as a clicks / engagement based website capitalise on that. I think the angle they have presented it as is fair. “Was Sony right to not make games day 1 on PS+?”
@DeanyBabyy exactly and when it's rumoured that stuff like Spyro, Crash, THPS will be coming to gamepass soon it doesn't mean a lot as people who wanted them (like myself) have already bought them years ago.
I’m an Xbox guy, enjoy all though and this is nonsensical. They already said the subscription numbers have plateaued so their solution is too increase the price?
@Vordus That’s what I was hoping.
I bought five three-month cards on steep discount a couple weeks after I bought my series X, and was holding them for a rainy day. Glad to know!
@themightyant Yeah you are definitely right. I just wish that the different sites could stick with news pertaining to their own console. It always comes across as very console warriorish to me when I see an article like that. It's like when one of the sites publishes an article about not getting a game that other consoles are getting. These types of articles always to me come across as trying to "rally the fanboys" of whatever console, get people angry over nothing or get people super egotistical over their choice of plastic box.
Sorry, long rant. In summary, I greatly dislike articles that just seem to be serving the egos of people over their choice of plastic box. I know that in technicality it's relevant, but to me it always comes across as "see X console IS better than Y console because X console does things that way while Y console does things THIS way!", and stuff like that. Like, can't we all just enjoy whatever console we use, or multiple consoles like myself, without having to justify why we are soooo much better than the other console or why we are soooo much more second-class than the other console?
...Sorry haha, I talk too much. Bad habit.
My feelings will be based on what they do with Reward points required to cover ultimate each month.
@BHPM Completely agree just enjoy wherever you play. I get that these type of articles can rally the fanboys, but that's more on the fanboys, doesn't mean it shouldn't be reported on. Fact is it's big news, even on PlayStation. What happens on one platform often impacts the others indirectly.
As for talking too much... don't we all, lol. But it's a forum, no stress.
The biggest hit to me was changing the conversion ratios. Last time I got 3 years ultimate for £90 something. When my sub runs out in Sept I’ll do whatever trick is around to get it cheaper. Which seems like it’ll be 2 years at around £90-100. This still seems worth it to me although not as good as it was!
I already find it too expensive. Too much indie trash for my tastes. I especially despise that we can't have full versions of older games like New Vegas. I let Game Pass run out once I got bored with Starfield and haven't seen anything added or even coming soon that would pull me back in.
Can I no longer pay monthly for Core?
Thank you for the breakdown. A little upset with Xbox for just the way they release this information. But it’s still worth it to me especially since I use an Xbox and PC.
Can’t justify it anymore. The price difference in New Zealand is quite large and this is coming in a time our groceries are also 30% more expensive than a few years back.
Been GP since day one but just cancelled. I sometimes go weeks without playing any GP titles anyway and have tons in my physical backlog. I also play a lot on switch, and rarely play online so even that isn’t a huge loss.
Best way to tell companies what you think is with your wallet - maybe one day in the future I’ll resubscribe but at $350 (NZD) per year I’d rather buy 4 AAA games on launch physical with the ability to sell them again.
If you play very casual and not many games, it's probably not a good deal. If you play often and/or like to try new games it's a stellar deal. If you routinely buy 3 or more games a year at full price you're also saving money in the end. For me, it's more than worth it.
MS adding more if it's launch day titles obviously is meant to encourage folks to buy GPU. No brainer as they are in the biz to make money.
GPU has always had a better game selection than PSNs Premium tier at a cheaper price. Its only now with the price increase that GPU costs slightly more. So you've been getting an awesome deal for awhile now.
Remember that when you pay that $2 you're making a vote for price raises.
And if you vote YES, the only thing you have to think about now is how willing you'll be to vote for it again, and how often.
