Xbox strolled into July with a couple of big free-to-play releases ready to go, and it turns out, one of those free-to-play releases has ended up being a bit bigger than we were expecting - at least at launch.
In just seven days, Nexon's The First Descendant has hit over 10 million players across all platforms, including Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. This is a huge milestone for the team, who've taken to Twitter to celebrate the achievement.
Sure, this is a free-to-play release so anyone can download and try the game out, but to get that much attention on a new IP in 2024 seems pretty impressive to us. Clearly, the dev expects to be in it for the long haul as well, with the team "continuing this journey together" with its players in the coming months.
That work has already started too. A week ago today we heard about the debut Xbox patch for The First Descendant, which made some notable changes, and there's already been a second patch in the week since. There's seemingly lots more to come from The First Descendant, then!
Have you been playing this? Come and tell us about your experience so far down in the comments!

this is just an add shooter. but "once human", well i would be all over that i think.
But certain blue website gave it a 3/10. Surely all these players are wrong.
It's an ok shooter but it straight up copies a lot of other games & it barely has an original idea to it's name. I mean they couldn't even come up with their own icons & copied Destiny's.
I think this will be one of those summer flash games that has blown up but probably won't stay that way.
The game was designed to grind and leans into that with some pretty big time gates for various parts of it progressions. That in itself will push a lot of folks away.
Am I wrong that this game is sort of Fortnite clone?
I played it some more and it got worse. I’ve not played anything so soulless and bereft of originality. It’s a really shameless cash grab preying on those with bad habits and more money than sense. Korea has a knack for that.
If I had 10 mil people playing my ‘Cakeframe’ game, I’d be elated too. I just wish I could believe them when they say they wanna bring us great experiences because, I ain’t had one with it yet.
@Moby The game is more of a destiny clone.
Let me guess. Three months later: "The First Descendant loses 86% of their players base".
@Moby it's like Warframe / Destiny had a drunken fling in a no name motel.
@RiverGenie love that desc
Love this game, i dont play it every day but am enjoying it while playing with friends/family.
I also like how, when you play solo you can just help out others or help new players level.
Also the fact you get so much without paying a penny. This is a game i will play for a long time.
I think it just picked a release window with almost zero competition across all consoles/PC. Esp since the ER DLC appears to be more niche.
@Steel76 Warframe still going strong after 10 years. I've been enjoying the game or rather the grind. I really don't mind the grind. I like to jump in for a few runs. I've unlocked a few descendants. Without paying. Either spend money or spend time.
I really like the art style in this, the gunplay too. Also, how slick teaming up with randoms is. I really like that aspect actually.
I think this game has a decent foundation to build on. I don't usually approach F2P games (due to the stigma of the F2P model), but I feel this game, like Warframe, is really generous. Above all, it plays great too.
