Following some rumours earlier this week, Octopath Traveler II has now shadow dropped on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Game Pass.
You can buy the game from Microsoft's store for $59.99 USD (or your regional equivalent) or download it right away with your Game Pass subscription. Alongside this, Square Enix's original Octopath Traveler game has also returned to Game Pass.
Both games will be available on the service until January 2026, according to the Square Enix website. In addition to this, the first and second game can be purchased in a bundle for $74.99.
Square Enix has also sent a new update live for Octopath Traveler II which adds an 'Extra Battle' mode, which becomes availalbe once you defeat the final boss in the last chapter. This new mode will allow you to test your skills against "newly added tough opponents" which also happens to include the cast of the original game.
This latest update bumps the sequel up to Version 1.1.0 and also makes some edits to the credits, various graphics, and adds some new tutorial text for the latest update.

If you're curious to know more about Octopath Traveler II, here's a bit about this sequel from the Microsoft Store. Our sibling site Nintendo Life also gave it an "excellent" nine out of ten stars, so it's well worth a look if you're an RPG fan.
"This game is a brand-new entry in the OCTOPATH TRAVELER series, the first installment of which was initially released in 2018 and sold over 3 million copies worldwide. It takes the series’ HD-2D graphics, a fusion of retro pixel art and 3DCG, to even greater heights. In the world of Solistia, eight new travelers venture forth into an exciting new era. Where will you go? What will you do? Whose tale will you bring to life? Every path is yours to take. Embark on an adventure all your own."
So, if you've been eager to check out Octopath Traveler II on Xbox or perhaps missed the first one when it was previously available on Game Pass, now is your chance to check them both out.
Will you be giving either of these games a go? Let us know in the comments.

Oh, wow! I have been interested in this for a while
The first game also was added back to GamePass. These and Hellblade 2 plus more in the same month. GamePass is killing it!
Bummer that it's full price 60$. I just grabbed Octo 1 on Playstation for 40$.
Octopath Traveler 1 was also shadow-dropped onto PlayStation at the same time, more games for all!
Downloading now
I downloaded II. Never played the first but I understand you don't need to. Sort of wish they waited to release this during thier showcase. Would've been extra hype.
@Xbox_Dashboard Octopath Traveler II is $60 on PlayStation though so it’s the same everywhere currently.
@awp69 40$ with PSN membership. OT2 is game passed so...meh.
@NintendoByNature hopefully 7 Remake/Rebirth and 16 announcements make up for it.
Absolutely loved the first one although it did take time I couldn't get into it at first but after some time I absolutely loved it
AND
Just Played half an hour or so playing the 2nd oh wow its really good it brings back memories from the first I'm going to love this game
Square Enix games coming to xbox and some coming to game pass is a Huge win for xbox
What?! Really? This is amazing news. I’ll be playing it very very soon. Amazing, I loved the first one.
Thank you Xbox for Game Pass and thank you Square Enix for coming back as you said you would! I loved the first one. I wrote a review on the "Last game you beat" thread. It's not perfect in every sense, but it's one of the RPGs I have enjoyed the most. Now bring the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster collection.
@Xbox_Dashboard not counting on either, but that would be MASSIVE
Take this off your bingo cards everyone… GP is adding even more value each month and really not letting us gamers rest … i feel that by the end of the month that my already insurmountable backlog will be inflated to immeasurable proportions…
@NintendoByNature maybe so much to offer us at the showcase that this was jettisoned as a token of appreciation early…
Man…crazy that they just shadow dropped. Now I gotta find time to fit it in.
Might play Octo 1 first (though I bought when on sale, I still enjoy gamepass rewards). I played about 5 hours last time it was on gamepass but wanted to play something more “modern” … think I ended up playing Tales of Arise.
Played the first one on Switch and loved it, gonna download this ASAP.
Never played either, but have heard great things and definitely will be fitting them in before they leave. I like that we know how long they will be on Game Pass. That info helps.
Game Pass continues to be the best deal I have ever had in gaming.
@Xbox_Dashboard @NintendoByNature Square Enix released Octopath Traveller I on PS and II on Xbox today, so you can see they're being serious about being a multiplatform publisher like Sega or Ubisoft, including catalogue titles. I assume that Final Fantasy games will follow, but I'm not sure if they're going to leave VII Remake and Rebirth for after XVI so they're closer to the final chapter's premiere. I think that the Pixel Remaster collection will come this year and XVI next year.
@DJKingaling @UltraGuy My expectations were zero, but I loved the first one. It's somewhat old-school and voice work is not the best, but it has a ton of quality of life features. It really looks beautiful on Series X (compared to the blurry video on Switch) and it has a wonderful soundtrack. Some people criticise the story, but I loved the small and humble stories that it's comprised of and I completed them all. Another thing I loved (my favourite) was the gameplay mechanics, it has a lot of strategy involved and, unlike other RPGs, they become intuitive after a while, so you can get creative and effective before you are overwhelmed. 100% recommended and looking forward to playing the sequel. I may even purchase the bundle.
Squares marketing continues to perplex. The state of play just happened which could have been for the Ps release of 1 and xbox showcase is there for release of 2 on xbox
Love seeing Square Enix keeping their word about multiplatform games.
I don't usually like Square Enix games, but since both are on Game Pass I'll give the first one a try.
Not sure if I'll like it, but that's the beauty of Game Pass. I can try it/them without paying $75.
Gotta say that I also love that these will be on GP until January 2026. Gives plenty of time to finish and knowing the end date now is fantastic.
This is great. Timing seems bizarre to launch with no warning. Strikes me that Xbox must be confident of their Showcase otherwise these would have been announced there
Great day 😎 just hope the pixel remaster comes now be a straight day one buy🙂 the comments are negative asf on ps site 🤣😭
Xbox and gamepass is really killing it. So many good games added , so little time 😭!
I did enjoy the first one on xbox, so this is excellent news. Keen to give this a try.
Dang, finally, but worth the wait since it saved me from buying it! 😃 They really shoulda made it part of the showcase and made a big deal.
@awp69 it’s pretty regularly on sale on ps, switch, and physically. But can’t beat free on game pass! 😃
@awp69 yeah no kidding! Wish we always knew the end date! Nice to be able to plan. Altho I think I’ll play it pretty soon, unless smt v is hitting game pass this month too.
They missed a trick by not combining the two into a single game called ‘Sexdecapath Traveller’.
Nice! With the first game now on PlayStation, that means that all major platforms now have both games. I sincerely hope that this is a sign that Square Enix is dead serious about being mostly multiplatform going forward.
...Soooooooo, Square Enix, any chance that Xbox and PlayStation can get Triangle Strategy brought over?
Amazing surprise. The first one left gamepass around the time I joined and I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about the second one. Stocked to play them.
By the way, I heard the second one is better and I like the vibe of it more… is it okay to play that one first? My understanding is that it’s a completely new cast of characters and a separate, unique story.
These games are not for me but pumped for the gamers that are excited.
Tried the 1st and loved the style just could not get into it.
@Banjo- yeah I really enjoyed Octo 1. I think the main reason I stepped away was because it was the third game I started after getting my Series X. I was basically like “why am I playing a pixel game on this beast?” — since then I actually seem to find myself enjoying old school style games more than modern games 🤣
Just beat Eiyuden Chronicles hundred heroes, which reminded me of Octo so much
Is it just me... I read the title of the article TWO SquareEnix RPG.
Is this two games? RPG isn't plural, and the game has 2 in it, but beyond that I think I've spent more time trying to figure this out than absorbing the content of the article. Did they drop part 1 and 2?
@iplaygamesnstuff The correct headline would be Two Square Enix RPGs Get A Surprise Release On Xbox Game Pass.
The plural of an acronym is formed by adding "s", for example: RTA > RTAs.
Both RPGs were added to Game Pass yesterday, the first game for the second time.
@Banjo- That's sorta what I settled on. Thanks for the clarification. They look good.
You don't have to play #1 before #2 as they are mostly unrelated in story. The writing and general story is much better on the second, and the second is more balanced in several ways. The first has slightly better music (debatable for sure...). I'd recommend playing both though, as they are both great experiences. Must play games.
That's great news. Unfortunately I'm still trying to find time to clear Eiyuden Chronicles from my backlog(which I'm yet to start)! Should I drop that and do Octo 2? I liked the first game.
@Sifi Good point
@Scrubchub Same position I'm in, 40-something hours into Eiyuden and starting Octo 2. Been waiting for Octopath 2 for ages and really enjoying it so far!
