Today's the day for Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance on Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S!
This brand-new release from ATLUS and SEGA is officially available to purchase on the Xbox Store (starting at £54.99 / $59.99), and if the reviews are anything to go by, it's definitely worth your time and money this weekend!
Here are just a selection of reviews we've come across for Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance so far:
God Is A Geek (9.5/10)
"The new additions to the game are both numerous and wonderful, the combat is as compelling as it ever has been, and the world is a joy to explore. RPG fans would be foolish to miss out on this instant classic, so make sure you don’t."
Game Informer (9/10)
"It’s just more SMT:V to dive into, which for an already jam-packed RPG full of narrative agency and monster-collecting action, is more food on the table for the feast. And it was a hell of a feast to begin with."
Digital Trends (4.5/5)
"Shin Megami Tensei V was already an incredibly solid open-world RPG in 2021, and the new Vengeance version is well worth coming back for so much so that it makes the original completely obsolete."
Press Start (8.5/10)
"Between a much improved narrative, the same addicting gameplay loop, heightened visuals and a smorgasbord of content, it's hard to find a lot to dislike in this package."
Stevivor (8/10)
"Overall, Shin Megami Tensei V Vengeance is all about building a more streamlined and player-friendly experience. While the game’s difficulty hasn’t gone anywhere, it feels like Vengeance is doing its best to make you enjoy that experience and remove as many roadblocks as possible."
Push Square (7/10)
"Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is the definitive way to play Atlus' devilish game of demon fusion, with a new suite of bells and whistles to smooth over what can, at times, still be an abrasive gameplay experience. It's incredibly combat-heavy, which can become oppressive, but working towards raising that perfect demon remains as engaging as ever."
As things stand, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance has a Metacritic score of 87 for PS5 and a whopping 91 for PC, while the Xbox Series X version is unscored for now. Based on those averages, it's one of the best releases of 2024!

Unsurprising. The base game was already excellent, and this re-release seems to address the majority of its issues.
Game is running at a smooth 60fps on my Steam Deck. So happy this went multiplat!
@FraserG Did y'all not get a review code? I was surprised you hadn't posted a review of this alongside the other sites.
@Ralizah So, I believe we could have done (although the majority of reviews seem to be for PS5/PC right now), but with showcase season taking priority over the past week-or-so, we sadly have to give up on it.
If it was any other time of year, we'd have gone for the review. I know PJ was keen on doing it, but other things got in the way.
The only "bad" review must be for not being a Sony exclusive. That's at least one point less for sure. 😂
Already have it, but I won't be playing it anytime soon. Too much backlog, too many other games I'm more interested in.
It's funny that since Xbox acquired Activision most Japanese developers started to take Xbox more seriously in making more games available on the platform.
Sad the Gamepass thing never happened - tempted to buy this!
Very happy to see all the big Japanese games arriving.
This is a series that has completely passed me by for whatever reason. This looks great though.
@Scrubchub highly recommend the series. Predecessor of Persona and Pokémon, with a very dark tone.
It will be a "Play Anywhere" supported title? If so, count me in! (I played the vanilla version on Switch and I thought it was great).
Amazing original game and series. I just want to play, but I’m poor at this moment so I’ll wait for a sale.
@HarmanSmith Very good question. Some Atlus games are Play Anywhere. I just checked and Shin Megami Tensei V is available on the Windows store, but doesn't have the Play Anywhere tag on Xbox yet. It doesn't have any tag but "New", so perhaps additional tags will be added soon.

@Banjo- Yeah, I have seen this kind of inconsistency. IIRC, most Sega/Atlus games are on the program (I even bought Yakuza: Like a Dragon on Xbox, and later I saw it on my PC library too).
But, for example, Soul Hackers 2 isn't on the program (even if it is listed on the Windows Store AND the Xbox Store).
But, while I found out about this, maybe I am gonna wait for a sale (played it the original to death, so there's no rush!).
Will pick up my copy tomorrow!
Shocked that this didn't do GP, I thought with the Atlus trend and the GP semi leak on their site it would have been a Showcase announcement. Strangely Atlus didn't make any showing at the Showcase at all this year despite 2 big games (this and Metaphor) inbound. All the Japanese games vanished this year. Great showcase, but the Japanese presence they'd built previously drying up is a depressing.
Either way, once it hits a sale, this is a must (re)buy for me as my first purchase was a combined Atlus+Switch-Tax for a 20fps slideshow game.
Thankful for the Japanese publishers. Western games have been absolutely abysmal this generation.
Downloading it right now via family sharing. I have a really cool friend. XD
Nintendo Life gave the Switch version a 9. These days, that means a lot.
Only heard of this from a Gameranx video of upcoming June 2024 titles. They refer that the Persona series is an offshoot of this. If it comes to Gamepass, might look into it.
@NEStalgia Isn't lovely being a Nintendo fan? 🤣 Now, you forgot about Octopath Traveller II, also added recently, but the show was all about the first-party lineup and a few third-party games.
Thankfully, Xbox is finally getting all big Japanese games now, Square Enix included. Some IPs have come to Xbox this generation for the first time! I guess that some Japanese games I'm not aware of will stay in Japan and probably exclusively on Switch. Next generation, some might stay on mobile only, depending on what Switch 2 is and its level of success. Next generation will be interesting regarding mobile versus Switch 2, even more if you include the handheld PCs and the hypothetical Xbox hybrid/handheld.
