We were treated to a great surprise at the Xbox Games Showcase last Sunday when Perfect Dark reappeared with an impressive glimpse at gameplay, and since that trailer, the actor for lead character Joanna Dark has been revealed!
The role has gone to the award-winning British actress Alix Wilton Regan, who expressed her delight at working on the project in a social media post earlier this week. Here's what Alix had to say at the time:
"SO GUYS... I do have some news"
"Crazy excited to be playing Joanna Dark in the upcoming Perfect Dark reboot - the first in 20 years!!! - a real privilege to take on the mission."
Alix has an impressive resume across film, TV and theatre, while her video game work has included Mass Effect (Sam Traynor), Cyberpunk 2077 (Alt Cunningham), Assassin's Creed Origins (Aya), Dragon Age: Inquisition (The Inquisitor), Return to Monkey Island (Captain Madison), Ghost Recon Breakpoint (Nomad) and so much more.
Obviously this is a huge responsibility to be taking on, and we're sure that Alix will do it justice! There's no date for Xbox's Perfect Dark reboot yet, but let's hope we'll be seeing plenty more of the game over the next 12 months.

It looked great considering all the reports of development hell was pleasantly surprised. Glad that they have got a good experienced voice actress.
Now looking forward to playing it but probably a couple of years out.
Absolutely JAWSOME!!! Not going to lie though...I thought that was Ashley Johnson doing her favorite impression of Quagmire at first.
This looked much better than I was expecting.
I’m sure she’ll do a great job too!
Really really really hope this game delivers that big AAA campaign experience with all the bells and whistles.
You don’t mind studios taking their time and getting it spot on for a 90 plus game.
But if it rolls out 80 ish after such a long time I can’t help but get frustrated with them.
Welcome Agent Dark !!!
I was wary of the development because of The Initiative's internal chaos that was reported by some ex-employees, but the trailer got me all excited. It looks awesome, slightly old-school and with appropriate music. The actress is a good choice and I like her voice. I just wonder why Microsoft didn't acquire Crystal Dynamics when Square Enix got rid of them.
I read some comments criticising Microsoft for not announcing specific dates. At this point and looking at what the competition is doing and who's complaining, it seems unfair if not veiled hypocrisy, considering all that they have in the pipeline and how expensive and complicated development has become. I hope that they release the games when they are polished and not six months earlier. Disclosing specific dates before they are certain is counterproductive and triggers additional rants.
Wish they would have modeled Joanna Dark's face after her.
A lot of people liked the trailer. I didn’t really like what was shown. I’ll be fair though, the gameplay just didn’t appeal to me, it seems to have with plenty of others. Pretty game to look at for sure though, apart from the modern woman jaw thing they have going on 🤣
I have no real affinity for Perfect Dark perhaps things that people may not like about this new game don't stand out as problems for me.
I skipped it during the N64 years and I recently gave it a try via Rare Replay and, to be honest, I didn't get the hype - it felt completely incoherent.
In the first mission, I wandered around the building killing bad guys looking for a way to progress only to find out I had to enter an elevator I had passed a bunch of times and could have finished it out a lot quicker than I did.
It all just felt like terrible game design.
But this reboot looked fantastic, and I can't wait to give it a go!

Not enough has been shown to know if it will follow the original's proposition or not. Gadgets and shooting return. The original has cinematic sections, but not as part of the gameplay, but as cutscenes. The new game has cinematic sections as part of the gameplay, arguably an improvement. Everything else seems very Perfect Dark to me.
"It all just felt like terrible game design."
It's not terrible design. To play Goldeneye 007 and Perfect Dark you need to read the reports to know what to do. Perfect Dark Zero is a bit more linear. Goldeneye 007 and Perfect Dark are not linear and don't show any maps on screen, but it's more problematic in Perfect Dark because of the larger scenarios. Fortunately, they are easier to navigate than something like the original Doom because of the unique and realistic environment.
"it felt completely incoherent. In the first mission..."
The story doesn't make any sense if you don't play the whole game.
@GamingFan4Lyf I loved the original Perfect Dark, but as I said in another post somewhere, it was a good time playing 4 player Splitscreen at 15fps with friends, we didn’t care about the story. I can’t even remember the single player campaign even though I’ll have played through it. I’d say the game has probably aged poorly, although I haven’t played it for donkeys, i completely understand why you feel that way.
I’ve always been a little confused as to why they chose to reboot not once, but now twice, as I’ve never seen Joanna as a gaming icon with any sort of interesting personality.
@Banjo- I played all the way through Goldeneye 007 and it was a lot easier to "read" the game.
Perfect Dark was not.
When I say incoherent, I am talking about level and objective design. It was a mess.
Perhaps, if I had played it during its era it might have been better, but after years of modern game design "spoiling me", it felt more daunting than enjoyable.
In other words, it aged like milk.
@Fenbops Gotta love that 15fps goodness of the N64!
Why have they made Joanna's face ugly and masculine?
@Lrapsody because its modeled after a real women. not some weebs wet dream.
@fizban3332 video games aren't about real life friend. walk outside if you want real life.
anyway the joanna from the 360 version of og perfect dark is the best.
Wow that is a rather impressive resume!
i didnt like the wide jaw, i dont know it just seem like the hollywood agenda we all getting tired of specialy when you put it next to fable protoganist
@fizban3332 her actress who is a real woman doesn’t have a big fat masculine jaw though… 🤣
Jonathan dark?
@Fenbops Which is even weirder because the actress's voice is feminine. Who knows what will happen to Lara in her upcoming re-reboot... A squarer head would be impossible, though.
Perfect Dark on the N64 is one of my favourite games and this is looking like a great successor from what we've seen so far and I like the character model and a good choce of voice actress too. It's a shame about certain people online who are weirdly offended by real women existing in games such as this and Fable but personally I can't wait for both games
It's more that recently, there is artificial and hypocritical social pressure on characters to have their sexual appeal neutralised, while any level of violence and gore is unconditionally accepted.
So hyped about this gem. Loved every bit out of that video.
@Banjo-
I don't normally see this type of problem with male protagonists though. It seems those are exempt.
As she should. The trailer looked fire. Hail to the queen, as PD is back.
here comes the crimson chin !
I like the character design. Feels more realistic than most of the female designs we get out of gaming. As for the game itself, it looked amazing. I’m a huge fan of Mirrors Edge and you can see the influence that series has had on it. My interest in this game went from mildly excited to I literally can’t wait in just the couple minutes that trailer played.

I never was really into 1st person shooters but I did kinda liked Perfect Dark back on the N64 the few times I played it. I wouldn’t mind giving this reboot a shot.
I hope the music scores are good like the previous entries.
Dat man jaw. Modern DEI crap, can't have a pretty woman!
Easily the best of the Xbox show for me. I really hope it’s not years and years away.
@fizban3332 so you are telling me that there are no pretty women in real world xD?
Somewhere between pretty good and fantastic, I remember playing Perfect Dark Zero and found it rather disappointing but thus looked excellent.
Jeez, how many daughters did Bruce Willis have?
Was an ok trailer, did the job, looked good, who knows how it turns out. I always liked Rare's games but I suck at any of their games even both Perfect Dark games even if i see what they did good.
What this offers may look nice but I don't know what gadgets or safeness of ideas they could offer to be a spy/agent in this game seeing as many games have been lacking depth and it's been boring me so much this gen.
I hope the dialogue is good for the actress to work with. Good on her and her performance however it turns out for the game.
She looks like a female Brock Lesnar, wonder if she fights like one as well.
@Fenbops I've seen this happening a lot lately, they take real actors and claim to model the video game character after them, yet they make a lot of changes to their face that results in them no longer resembling the aforementioned actor. It seems especially common among female characters with them looking more masculine than the reference actor.
I also don't get the mentality of implying feminine characteristics are somehow unrealistic. There's no shortage of feminine looking women out there, seems asinine to deny their existence while spouting off the values of representation.
@JayJ When they first show her in the trailer I laughed because it’s become so predictable. Anyone who defends this saying ‘oh you’re just offended by real women’ need to go outside and see what a woman looks like.
What also gets pushed away is that female gamers also enjoying playing as attractive females, this push to ‘represent’ real women is false and isn’t satisfying anybody apart from the 0.01% of the people out there pushing it.
It’s 2024 and most big titles now don’t even have the option to choose male or female in character creation, that’s not progression it’s regression. Why do these same people who push for strong female characters in games also support not being able to choose one.
The biggest problem with this particular model is the massive jaw. The head is completely square because of it, like if you had been messing with a character editor. If you look at how Joanna was originally designed, e.g. the N64 PAL box, the new hair is shorter and the eyes are smaller and look even smaller because of the disproportionate and masculine jaw. That's not what I would call realistic. The Xbox 360 art has a more advanced and realistic design based on the original. You can see the thicker lips, the bigger eyes, the cheeks and, most importantly, the triangular jaw and round chin.
@fizban3332 naw real women are way more attractive than that. Between this and Fable it’s like there is an aversion to beauty.
@fizban3332 most real women aren't ugly and masculine
