'Gears Of War: E-Day' Is The Next Instalment In Xbox's Famous Franchise

Not a huge gears fan...but it made more surprisingly more intrigued seeing it was a prequel

Yes! The only game that excited me from tonight. Guess we aren’t getting a remastered trilogy….

After the weird Gears 5, I'm excited about the prequel! It could become a trilogy prequel. Gears 5 messed things up and by the end of the game, you didn't know what to expect.

I'm pumped for this. I am surprised that Gears Tactics and a couple books were the only time E-day was really focused on. It always needed a proper game.

Pretty bad that the Coalition just gave up on their own trilogy to make a prequel. Sadly i don't trust them one bit with this. I'm expecting tons of lore changes and continuity errors. Among other things.

At least the locust are back. Is this game coming before 6 or after? Is it developed by the coalition or someone else like judgement? Either way something to look forward to.

So excited for this. I’m a massive fan of the series, and while I’ve really enjoyed 4 and 5, there’s some things I really didn’t like about it. The poor choice at the end of 5 aside, I didn’t like how they made the title Gears only and all of the Fortnite esque multiplayer additions like the skins and dancing. I’m really hoping this one gets it back to its roots and has a classic multiplayer experience like the first one.

Well , after waiting 5 years and then watching the showcase we are still none the wiser for when the next instalment of Gears of War is gonna drop…😩

So a reboot/prequel? I didn't finish Gears 5 but even still why? What is with these Infinite/E Day directions and no 6?

I mean seems cool and was odd not seeing Dom in 4&5 as he did survive in 3 didn't he I forget?

Halo had problems but Gears felt like it wanted to follow the same problems of look we continued it but it always felt off to me. I never hated it like Halo 5 because they told the story/presented it better in Gears.

Like it HAD to do the Halo thing of continuing when it could in its own way when it kind of did just still while I didn't mind it still felt like the Halo problem of continuing for the sake of it and didn't really know what to offer to players. Which isn't surprising.

Whenever 6 happens I guess.

Still Gears of War then Gears I assume is fine to separate or make more clear the eras then? I'm interested in this. I haven't played Tactics. But I'm getting to Halo Wars 2 soon as bought it physical so whenever I get around to that.

My only complaints are that this prequel isn't set during the Pendulum Wars, + now the main story won't conclude until the next decade...

I love the idea of doing perhaps a e day trilogy. Its hard to believe were already approaching 20 years of gears.(2026 will be 20)

I always wanted more backstory, so this will be great.And nostalgic with the old crew together in the game. I hope the build out the next mainline though as well, story isnt over yet.

This was better than the Gears 6 announcement I was expecting! I'm definitely more hyped to play this now!

Problem with the Pendulum War, @UnusedBabyWipes, would be that there would be no Locust. It would just be humans v humans, which you can find in a ton of other games. Granted, I wouldn't mind seeing it, but the Locust is what makes Gears of War so much fun...

I cant wait!!! My favourite series on Xbox. Surprised Coalition is doing this one before Gears 6 but I dont care. This will be glorious!

So, I am delighted that we are getting another Gears of War game (and indeed, one that actually features a war!). I've send in these forums before that I disliked the absence of war in both the game and the title.

However, I'm happy, but disappointed at the same time. I so wanted to see Gears 6, with a release date for next year. Whatever your feelings about the direction the games took, I still want to know how the story concludes, and now it looks like I will have to wait still longer.

Also, I really wanted to see confirmation of the existence of The Marcus Fenix Remastered Collection, and though I know I am being greedy, I had really wanted a shadow-drop.

Hopefully, we will get a full game next year, because with the E-Day trailer being all CGI, it makes me think that that game is at least 2 years off...

@Banjo- It's typical old school Gears, it looks promising for sure. Hopefully it delivers.

Very excited for this. Surprised they went back to the full ‘Gears of War’ nomenclature, but I’m certainly not complaining! I really agree with the above people who hope that they do eventually continue the story past the cliffhanger that 5 left off on with a proper GOW 6. Constant retcons and changes in direction really hurt the Halo narrative, so wouldn’t want GOW to suffer the same fate.

@BANJO Gears E-Day is like Halo Infinite, a much needed reboot. It's a more confident, more gamey Xbox. Too soon to know, but Halo Infinite didn't disappoint me and although Gears 5 did, Hivebusters was fantastic, not to mention The Coalition are coding masters. They are pretty much like Epic and they have some Epic staff, actually.

Annoyed it's not Gears 6. Giving up on a story that we've spent the last 8 years following via books and games really grinds my gears. Laaaaaame.

This is just like the next Mass Effect game. The old story is OVER. IDK why we need to go back. I loved it too but it's time to move on. The Coalition could take the Gears 6 story into whatever direction they want...they could have another "war" easily. They can have flashbacks where you play as old characters. There's no excuse for this laziness. Ugh.

I like 4 and 5 but they didn't come close to matching Gears of War 1-3, those are among my favorite games of all-time. I was just hoping for a sequel in 6 that could maybe fix some of the problems I had with 5's ending, but this... If done right, it's the new Gears of War game I didn't know I wanted. Lots of potential here.

The old story is over, @stinkyx. Absolutely right. However, E-Day is the beginning of that story, one that (in game terms) we do not know about...

The gameplay in the sequels was still good, but the story and new characters didn't click with most people like I'm sure the devs had hoped. The Coalition has proved it can make a game with fun combat, nail the story that's focused around already beloved characters, and this could easily get things back on track. Looking forward to seeing how it plays out.

@Gamer83 Yeah, that's what I feel. The positive vibes of the original games were absent with an annoying protagonist (Kait), some silent open-world padding that interrupted the flow and a messy story. The story was getting so messy that I thought her mother/grandmother needed to kill her to make any sense and keep the series going. I know that I'm not the only one that felt something like this because of what I have read. I think that we can get a prequel trilogy now.

@JokerBoy422 Halo Reach at least came out after Halo's 1-3 story arch, just like Gears of War Judgement came out after the OG trilogy. The E-Day story has already been told via books too. IDK, I always make the mistake of taking the story seriously in games and getting personally invested, so I was really expecting Gears 6. Anyway, I'll get over it. Multiplayer is what I like best anyway.

In my excitement about this announcement, I wasn't even thinking about the open-world segments you mentioned. I really hope that gets dropped. I don't mind a level that's maybe a bit more open for exploration than some others, but get rid of the open world hub nonsense. Don't need it.

@Gamer83 I'm not against open worlds either, but it didn't make any sense. It was literally, "Don't waste time! Get going!" and then an empty section where all you did was roam to find something that wasn't that important to begin with, and then a variant in a different colour...

I enjoyed both 4 and 5 but this really hypes me.

Yeah, to be clear, I'm not against open worlds, but it depends on the game for me. Works well for Grand Theft Auto, Assassin's Creed, Yakuza, etc. For Gears of War? Just need some good, old fun linear levels where you're scratching and clawing your way through it.

@Gamer83 In my opinion, 1, 2, 3 and 4 are the best. Judgment (by another studio) is not very good. I think that people that haven't played them don't know what they miss.

The first 3 games I'd recommend to any new Xbox owner are Gears of War 1-3. Still hold up well, imo, and even better with the Series X upgrades.

As a big Gears fan, unlike a lot of people on here, I'm pretty pissed. Whether you liked 5 or not, it still left the story open for one more. Almost 5 years later and there's no sequel in sight. Pretty frustrating for people who actually liked 4 and 5 that are waiting on the sequel all of these years. If it was a flop, I'd understand better, but not finishing the story is pretty ridiculous.

Was not expecting this at all. I was hoping for Gears 6 but getting a new Gears game is a good thing.

better than them trying to make a 6th game . please bring gears of war back to its roots although i still doubt this will be as good as the trilogy

I hope we see a society of giant Meat Men obsessed with gains. They all started eating grubs because it was the world's most effective source of macronutrients. E Day is just Locust revenge.

@Banjo- pleased and sad. I love the E day move. That is perfect with the Netflix show coming out. It will allow many new fans of the show to start from the beginning and for us older fans we get the darker more gears of war style game that 4-5 just wasn’t. Sad cause i really wanted the Marcus Fenix collection. Now it makes even more sense to have it. But maybe i see why it’s not there. Wait a year and drop it so all 4 are ready for the new show? Or maybe the collection just simply isn’t real and i need to forget about it. Neither way man is E day going to be great.

@stinkyx - I don’t see it as being lazy a lot of players on here and other forums have been complaining that gears had moved away from its original format of the dark atmospheric game that made it so enjoyable , so maybe the coalition have listened 😊

Oh when I heard those subtle music notes, I knew straight away where this was going... Nostalgia is such a strong feeling, it sent a tingle down my back... I am really excited for this one. 😬

Can't wait for this. Excited that it's going back, but I really enjoyed 5 so I hope they eventually do a sequel and finish the story
