As part of a big earnings call over at mega game maker Ubisoft, The Division: Heartland has officially been cancelled. In development for a number of years over at Red Storm Entertainment, Heartland was set to be a free-to-play, extraction-themed spinoff of Ubisoft's The Division series.
Now though, the game has met the chopping block as the company decided to "redeploy resources to bigger opportunities". Here's a bit more about the team's decision to cancel The Division: Heartland:
"After careful consideration, we have made the tough call to halt development on Tom Clancy’s The Division Heartland, effective immediately. Our priority now is to support the talented team members at our Red Storm Entertainment studio, who will be transitioning to new projects within our company, including XDefiant and Rainbow Six."
It's always hard to wrap your head around these sorts of decisions — especially when we've seen extended gameplay on Heartland as little as a year ago — but this move likely comes down to the amount of support a game like this needs to be successful. Live service titles require quite a lot of upkeep, and clearly, Ubisoft wants to pump those resources into XDefiant and Rainbow Six instead.
Speaking of XDefiant, we're quite excited about that one in particular. Ubisoft San Francisco's free-to-play shooter releases in less than a week, and we were rather impressed by the game's recent server stress test on Xbox. It wasn't perfect, but the more resources this one can get to potentially develop into proper competition for Call of Duty, the better!
What do you make of this move from Ubisoft? Tell us your thoughts down below.

It would be SO XBOX if Call of duty was somehow now surplanted as the number 1 shooter by xdefiant. 😬
Edit: and on topic, I was looking forward to Heartland. Damn you, Unisoft.
At least they didn't close the studio and moved the staff elsewhere unlike the heartless Microsoft management.
I respect Ubisoft for this decision and not sacking staff and ruining lives.
I'm perfectly fine with this. Much rather have The Division 3.
Such a shame both Division games went under the radar. They are fantastic unappreciated games.
@Kooky_Geezer What's stopping any of staff from closed studios to go out and start their own studios? If they not have the cash, they can certainly get loan to startup, right?
This is the result of some of what I have said over the last year or two.
Studios being stretched too far on too many projects.
Basically you are measured on your results. In this case games that are fully released and sales.
If you spread your studios to thin then you basically get five projects running at once but nothing finished to sell or a poor quality product.
These companies of late don’t seem to understand the basics of output management.
@NeutronBomb I wouldn't worry about that. XDefiant is not that good.
@GuyinPA75
Has there been any announcement about division 3? The division franchise has been one of my favorites over the last few years.
@NeutronBomb i think i would actually die from laughter for real.
@The-Grezzly-Bear Think all I heard is that division 3 is rumored in development. Ubi probably felt little apprehensive to push out a game about a deadly virus while scamdemic was going on.
If I had place a bet. 2028 maybe 2027 we'll be playing division 3.
Still crazy Phil went after Activision and not Ubisoft crazy catalog that’s cheaper and would’ve been less of a fight in court . I would’ve acquired Ubisoft then blizzard
@Kooky_Geezer How did you feel about "Heartless" Sony closing down a studio this year, whilst also laying of people from their most successful studios Including Naughty Dog and Insomniac ?
