Well, we're officially in a bit of a Fallout renaissance, folks! Amazon Prime's TV show has drummed up huge levels of hype for Bethesda's post-apocalyptic series — so much so that the nine-year-old Fallout 4 has shot to the top of the gaming charts in recent weeks — and the online-focused Fallout 76 is doing rather well too. That begs the question, where's all the new Fallout at, given this fresh injection of interest in the franchise?
Unfortunately, it's looking like we have quite the wait on our hands before a major new Fallout game launches. Bethesda Game Studios is moving onto The Elder Scrolls 6 now after last year's big Starfield release, and Fallout: New Vegas developer Obsidian seems pretty busy with The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed, amongst other bits and pieces. Despite this, should Xbox be putting renewed focus on Fallout, given it now owns the IP?
It certainly seems like it'd be a good idea to do so. We've not seen this level of hype around the series since Fallout 4's launch back in 2015 - and the rocky launch of Fallout 76 hardly helped the franchise in 2018. The latter has turned things around somewhat, but it's never generated the sheer level of excitement that this new TV show has.
In a sense, it almost feels like Starfield should have been 'Fallout 5', given all this transmedia hype we're seeing moving into 2024. Sure, Xbox was grateful for a big new IP on its platform last year, but now that Starfield's launch period is fizzling out, it feels like a big Fallout release in 2023 would have synced up perfectly with the Prime TV show.
Of course, that wasn't to be, and Xbox is now missing a pretty big opportunity with the series. Games take years to make these days, so unless something is already cooking behind closed doors at Team Green, we're probably going to be waiting a while for Fallout 5. Still, should Xbox get moving quick on a new Fallout release? Or are you happy to wait for the next big Bethesda entry once The Elder Scrolls 6 comes and goes?

I think ES fans would actively mutiny if Fallout 5 got bumped up.
Remasters and remakes of Fallout 3/NV wouldn't require much work from the core Bethesda team and most of the work could be done by another studio.
They could also expand the Creation Club concept and approach modders like those working on Fallout London (or the Play Fallout _ in Fallout 4 mods) and worth with (and pay) them to make an "official" version of their mods as standalone Fallout releases.
@abe_hikura Fallout 3 / NV remasters seem a no-brainer to me. Use the Starfield engine perhaps, get them all spruced up. Next year will be 15 years since New Vegas...
I'm not a fan. So I would say no. Don't like first person or shooting games.
Well, the next Elder Scrolls probably won't be out for a few years, which is kind of ridiculous. Fallout 5 would most likely be 2030 at least. Hard to even think about something that far away. So, no.
I'd like to see Bethesda use a new game engine. It doesn't matter how many graphical coats of paint you throw at it, it's busting at the seams at this point.
Perhaps allowing players to put tens of thousands of potatoes in a cockpit isn't exactly the thing to be focusing on when actual gameplay flow is hindered by that level of interactivity. There is such a thing as "too much".
The fact Tears of the Kingdom on a piece of hardware with a fraction of the power of PC and Series consoles has less load times and faster travel from Point A to Point B than Stafrield should tell you something. Yes, Zelda doesn't have the same level of world persistence or interactivity as Bethesda RPGs, but much can be learned from simply paring things back to focus on that which is most important rather than being excited you can collect every item in the game and store it your spaceship for no other reason than "why not?".
Actually, I'd like Bethesda to go outside of its wheelhouse and develop something that isn't an open-world game designed to be "lived in".
Only if it has better roleplaying elements than 4 and Starfield.
Inexile & Obsidian should be working on Fallout spin offs right now.
Long term, Microsoft should triple down on BGS. Three studios under 1 BGS banner, each one responsible for either Fallout, ES or Starfield. They have the money to make that sensible investment.
I've been saying for years they should approach Larian or Obsidian. With the resurgence of CRPGs they should create a spinoff series called Fallout Classic that goes back to its roots. Bethesda can still make F5. Otherwise we won't see any more Fallout until 2035
Fallout 5 will do really well whenever it releases. It does not need a TV show to boost it. It will already be one of the biggest launches in gaming without a show.
Having these decade old titles top sales charts and playtime charts is way more beneficial to them. They have received a second life that almost no titles ever do. Injecting a ton of users into their live service game is probably the best thing bethesda can ask for right now.
This has been more successful than most remasters perform and they didnt even touch 3 or new vegas. It would be interesting to see how many of these players are completely new to the games and not just people like me replaying games I've already beaten multiple times.
(I would also much rather they focus on a new Elder Scrolls release than Fallout 5 but that is just my preference of franchise)
Seriously they need to give Bethesda the budget to hire more staff or something to keep these prominent IPs in the public consciousness. Fallout and Elder Scrolls have BEEN needing new games by now.
Yes as I am not bothered about elder scrolls ...if they don't source it out to another developer then we won't see fallout for over 10 years
I'd love see a new fallout game. But have regulated myself to reality. Expect soonest see fallout 5 easily be 2028-2030.
I would, but I fear it would be too much of a good thing. We've got the TV series alongside the Fallout 4 upgrade, so I think that will do me for now.
I wouldn't say no to a remaster/remake of Fallout 3, though.
Nope. I want Bethesda to have all hands on deck for TES6.
As far as new games go? No. But I'd love to see 3 & New Vegas get Remasters, Xbox has them via BC but not PS or Switch (3 also doesn't have Steam Achievements). I know this is also in the super minority, but I'd like to see the team that does Shelter add the 2 sets of mobile content updates to the other platforms.
Should be planned as a launch title for next gen console.
Change the art style from that ugly Bethesda outdated style and the younger generation will love it …
Don’t need a remaster of Fallout 3 or NV yet since they work so well on Series X (seriously, can people please try BC?). I would love for them to fast track a new one but not at the expense of Elder Scrolls. They definitely should create a new team to handle it.
Fallout and Elder Scrolls are 2 of the biggest franchises in gaming and you have pretty much the same team rotating between the two (and Starfield) 😢.
I would like to see Xbox to focus on new Burnout game and Burnout 3 & 4 Remastered.
nope i preffer them to focus on what they doing i think the hype and engagement since the tv show launch was a good thing but they shouldn't change their schedule on anything.
@ozkrmz Hallelujah, yes.
The short answer is "yes."
Yes please!!
All hands on deck for the quickest release possible.
Why does it take Bethesda so bloody long to get games out? Fallout 4 was released over 8 years ago, Skyrim over 13 years ago.
I have no idea whether committing time and resources to their online games has any impact on the progress of Fallout 5 and TES6, but it feels as though two very popular (and presumably very profitable) games are being held back with no discernible reason.
@Kezelpaso Absolutely agree.
I think they should take a page from the Sony playbook. Assemble a studio made of staff from the Bethesda, id and Obsidian teams, and make their primary function making Fallout games. Then you'd get one every 5-6 years.
Bethesda was nuts not to get someone competent to make a half-sequel to Skyrim, and a half-sequel to fallout 4; similar to how new Vegas was a stopgap between fallout 3 and 4. Totally nuts. I guess they were relying on fallout 76 and eso, but neither of those are even the same type of game.
@Barry_Biscuits they were working on starfield. It’s only one team. Fallout 76 and eso are mmos made by entirely different people and have nothing to do with it.
But they were nuts not to hire other devs to make half sequels.
@Olliemar28 fallout 4 is like nearly ten years old, upgrade or not. It was dated when it came out.
I would like a Fallout 1 and fallout 2 remake in the first person like the other games as these games are not playable on xbox
fallout 3 and new vegas could benefit from a remaster and sprint button! walking everywhere does drag
