As part of his new interview with IGN, Bethesda's Todd Howard has confirmed that Fallout 5 is definitely in the plans, but we won't be seeing it until after The Elder Scrolls 6 arrives, so that's probably not for a very long time.
Howard mentioned during the interview that The Elder Scrolls 6 is in pre-production right now, and even though Fallout 5 is on the cards after that, there are some "other projects" that the team is looking at occasionally too:
"Yes, Elder Scrolls 6 is in pre-production and, you know, we’re going to be doing Fallout 5 after that, so our slate’s pretty full going forward for a while. We have some other projects that we look at from time to time as well."
Unsurprisingly, we've heard very little of The Elder Scrolls 6 in recent years due to Bethesda wanting to put a large amount of attention on the upcoming Starfield instead, and it sounds like there's not much news to share right now anyway.
It was mentioned back in 2020 that news updates on The Elder Scrolls 6 were still probably years away, with the only real talking point over the past 12 months being that the game will seemingly be an Xbox exclusive when it arrives.
When do you think we'll see TES6 and Fallout 5? Give us your predictions in the comments.

So I wouldn't expect a new fallout game this generation then
I don't see Fallout 5 coming out until 2032 or 2033. Give it to Obsidian for the love of God. I just think Bethesda is scared they'll make an amazing Fallout and show them up
They have so many western rpg devs…give fallout to one of them. Just don’t call it 5. Westland devs are perfect for fallout right?
Cool, get back to me in 10 years when we might have seen something
Dear Howard:
Please just let Obsidian have Fallout

Then I hope we get at least one (preferably more than one) non-numbered Fallout game from another developer before Fallout 5 releases. Like they did with New Vegas.
Pretty much expecting Elder Scrolls VI be right at the end of this gen. Fallout 5 will be well into the next one. Big budget games take 5-6 years now, it's just how it is.
With fo5 so far out, how about a remake of 3 or nv in the meanwhile.
Echoing those saying give it to Obsidian. They did better with one Fallout game than Bethesda did with three Fallout games.
Like…maybe they should focus on more new games? Starfield looks amazing, but like what if they made a another new IP and didn’t put out a fallout game for over 15 years? That would be fine by me.
Christ on a bike! What have they done with all the dosh they raked in from the multiple ports of Skyrim? Can they really not afford to set up another studio to get working on the next Fallout? At this rate I'll be 60 years old by the time Fallout 5 comes out.
About 20 years then lol
If they had Starfield, Elder Scrolls VI and Fallout V all in the works we would all be dead before one gets released.
this is madness P3
Dear Microsoft c/o Phil Spencer,
instead of just buying up new studios it would be great to see more investment in the great studios you already have. This could help speed up development, foster new ideas, allow multiple concurrent projects and start getting great games released to Game Pass at a decent cadence.
Top of the list is Bethesda Game Studios, but also Obsidian, Double Fine & Ninja Theory. Bethesda specifically could do with extra staff working on improving their game engine, making it visually more impressive, less buggy and improving frame rates. But also increase output speed or allowing them to run concurrent projects.
If you’re looking for developers I hear 343 has a lot, doing little
Yours insincerely
An Xbox fan
@SolarSailor Obsidian have their hands more than full with Avowed, The Outer Worlds 2, Fallout New Vegas 2, Grounded, Pentiment and probably more. Bonkers considering they only have around 200 staff (as of 2019). They’re amazing.
Bethesda has around 420 (2021).
Meanwhile 343 had over 450 staff in 2016 and apparently went on a large hiring spree, it was rumoured to be 600+ at one point.
Feel this needs some rebalancing
@Sam_TSM It is a bit like Sony asking Yamauchi to let another studio make GranTurismo. Technically they can force it but probably they won't piss off one of their most long-term and influential employees.
I doubt Phil Spencer ever tells Todd Howard that Fallout is now for Obsidian and that is the end of it! As long as Todd Howard is there at the top of the pyramid I feel Obsidian won't get a chance. Here is hoping that this comment ages poorly.
@themightyant 343 is probably an example of how not to manage a studio. Their output is embarrassingly weak and at this point, I really believe MSFT should open up the franchise for other studios to make Spin-offs.
Open a new studio. Hell, open two.
Acti had 3 main companies and another 3 or so in support, just to get COD out every year. Building more studios to make sure you can get an alternation of Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and Starfield, evey couple of years (or at least one of each franchise every five years) sounds like a decent strategy to me.
Given how well these titles do, I'd say there's definitely enough demand for it.
@Richnj Yeah, this annoys me. I love all the ES and Fallout games, they're really popular and they must surely be financial successes. But regardless of how much I enjoy these games, and go back for multiple playthroughs, I can't help but see how stingy and lazy the production feels, the lack of polish is evident everywhere.
Surely they can now afford to step up production. I don't think I'm being particularly entitled to want a new installment of these games more than once a decade. And a bit more care and polish would be nice.
