Back in June 2021, Halo's legendary Bungie-era composer Marty O' Donnell announced that he was thinking of calling time on his career in gaming - and we must admit, we didn't expect him to announce such a huge career shift less than three years later.
Taking to Twitter today, O'Donnell has announced that he's running for US Congress as a Republican candidate. Yep, you read that right, the long-time Halo composer is swapping the strings of the House of Reckoning for the wings of the House of Representatives.
O'Donnell's accompanying message is quite a long one, but the gist of it is that he wants to go and try to make a difference in US politics after three years of semi-retirement. Fair play to him - that's a tall order but we wish him the best in his new career!
In recent years O'Donnell has been involved in a few controversies related to his involvement with Halo, although those were eventually sorted out amicably and the composer seems to have moved on from the whole saga. It'll be interesting to see how things play out during his time in politics.
What do you think to this new career move for Marty? Keep it civil and discuss this surprise news down below.

The last thing we need in the government is more old (especially Republican) men so I hope this new endeavor of his falls flat.
Could you imagine doing something as freeing and creative as making music and deciding to go to the boring, restrictive awfulness of having a political career?
@TwoDents I read his whole post. Where does he say that?

Wish the best to the guy.

@Trmn8r Recent polls point to most Democrats wanting a change in leadership and believing Biden to be too old at best, and failing politically at worst (border/Israel etc). Anyway, I regret commenting on a political story on a gaming site, let's all move on eh?
So he’s gone from writing music about fighting the Covenant to…..joining the Covenant.
How far the mighty have fallen.
Hopefully he wins. He will have the 435 members humming the Halo theme in unison and we will finally know world peace.
@Trmn8r So many words buzzwords in one post.
"Principles and facts" lol
Okay.
Let's establish some facts.
So, at least in the case of the Colorado ballet removal that kicked this off, the people who sued Trump in that situation were Republicans. In fact, most of the legal trouble Trump has been in has been due to other Republicans trying to hold him accountable. So "the side" you're referring to, I hope you realize, is Republicans.
How about the fact that the GOP is currently a cult that will turn on its own ideas the moment it politically benefits a Democrat? Healthcare reform, as it went through, was a plan based off explicitly conservative policies about healthcare reform at the time (and similar, if I recall, to Romneycare), but y'all like to pretend it's socialized medicine.
Republicans EXPLICITLY nuked a potential border deal because your Trump has EXPLICITLY said he doesn't want things to improve under Joe Biden.
The GOP didn't even have a platform drawn up in 2020 like they usually do, because literally the only priority of the party at that point was politically supporting Donald Trump.
It's hard to think of another political party at present worldwide that's MORE divorced from acceptance of the facts, or that is less principle-driven.
You LITERALLY had people at CPAC explicitly calling for the end of democracy. Following only a few years after the last Republican president attempted to orchestrate a coup.
The modern GOP is a stain on the Earth, and will lead this country to ruin unless it is stomped out utterly and rebuilt from the ground up. The party is a refuge for the absolute worst aspects of humanity.
If he gets in we'll be hearing some epic scores overlayed on CSPAN house meets. LOL

@TJ81 Good point on that. I think most of us are getting options on both ends that we don't really want. This is the rematch nobody wants. But yeah, none of us are likely to win each other over on a gaming site. We've become very galvanized. But hey, screw those Sony guys right?
He's just a milquetoast GOP guy, same position on Israel and everything. Boring. Boomers that smoked pot and worshipped John Lennon now suddenly woken up to the societal collapse that they themselves brouht about and want to fix it. Uh-uh. Why don't you tell me about how great Woodstock was, gramps, and then you can go to bed
Very tiresome reading the negative comments about the republican party, not just here, but all facets of media. Not every republican is a "right wing nutcase" or an "old white man." There are good and bad people on both sides. Why can't people respect others decisions and opinions with regards to political beliefs? Even if I disagree with you, which, happens quite often, I won't resort to name calling. Just speaks volumes about who you are more than the party you're looking to diminish.

@NintendoByNature Considering the modern GOP is FILLED with and CONTROLLED by people who want to burn books, make voting harder, keep people like me from being able to marry, oppress the trans community, spread lies about vaccines during a pandemic, continue supporting a candidate who attempted to orchestrate a coup, explicitly support fascist strongmen over democratic allies, reduce the tax burden on the already undertaxed mega-wealthy even more, and have public figures at major political events calling for the "end of democracy" and talking about starting a new Civil War, what political beliefs should I be looking to respect?
Sorry, but the 'enlightened centrism' attitude is one driven by nothing other than disinterest and ignorance of the facts at this point.
@NintendoByNature because some opinions simply have no merit by not being based in reality: opinions are not created equal.
Also, noone is name calling anyone, people here are attacking the GOP's draconian political agenda (and rightly so), not individuals.

@Ralizah I want to preface this by saying I've always respected your opinion on here(and NL) and I've had nothing but great exchanges with you. I hope this doesn't change that and I'd love to continue on discussing games moving forward. However there's a lot overlap in your comment there and it goes both ways.
Democrats are removing certain books from curriculum, most recently Dr Seuss books, and adding others which some would say, have certain agendas. At least in Illinois, that is. Sounds like burning books.
Same with voting. A cook county judge made a decision to remove Donald trump from the ballots. That's literally controlling an election.
I felt lied to about the pandemic myself, and specifically, the vaccine. I was told you need the first, then a booster, and another, and a 6th, and so. You will then be protected. Most of the people I know who live by that rule, somehow get covid at least once a year. I have none of that, and somehow ( knock on wood), I haven't had it since Feb of 2020. Trust the science I'm told. But science can only be trusted with certain topics related to covid.
I wish nothing but the best for same sex marriage, and I fully support that. Everyone has a right to be happy with who they choose. There's alot of Republicans who feel that way believe it or not.
And the riots during 2020 were appalling. Innocent bystanders being beaten and robbed just walking home, owning a store, or driving through at the wrong time were directly the work of people on the left. Storefronts being smashed in, shoes, purses, dresses, hoodies ( useless items) all stolen to support a movement. Moms and dads being assaulted for being at the wrong place at the wrong time. People who spent their life savings to open store fronts that got destroyed during all of that because of something they had nothing to do with, disturbs me, and should disturb anyone who works for their money.
My simple fact that I see, is that this country has been worse in the last 4 years than it was the 4 years prior. There's more turmoil, higher unemployment rate, inflation is through the roof on everything, housing prices and interests rate are skyrocketing. I don't care who's in office, I'm just tired of struggling to support a family. Whoever has that golden ticket, is the one I'll ride with.
I'll admit though, it does sadden me to see you say you don't respect others political beliefs.
@clvr we can definitely agree there. Some opinions have no merit. You're splitting hairs with name calling, but ok.

@NintendoByNature Oh, no worries, I don't get offended. I love talking to people. I just don't mince my words. By and large, I feel the same about you.
I've heard literally nothing about Democrats agitating to get Dr. Seuss books banned, and can find nothing on it, so unless you can provide me with a link, I'm going to assume you're mistaken. What I DID find was that the Seuss estate is going to stop circulating certain books that it considers offensive. Which is actually not a decision I care for either, but it has nothing to do with the Democratic Party.
Anyway, it's not just a few crazy soccer moms here and there. You have support from the top of the party for restricting access to books with themes they find offensive. So it still wouldn't be the same thing at all as random crazy online lefties screaming about the Harry Potter books because JK Rowling is problematic, or whatever.
Regarding Trump being removed from ballots, as I pointed out, the people suing Trump and getting him into these situations tend to be Republicans as well. Not sure what the political leaning of the judge is, but it's not the same thing as politicians attempting to restrict access to voting rights. And, as expected, the Supreme Court just ruled he can't be kicked off ballots anyway.
The data overwhelmingly supports the contention that keeping up with your boosters increases your likelihood of not suffering from severe disease if you catch covid. With that said, there have always been people who catch it and are asymptomatic, and that might very well be what happened with you. There WERE lies from the scientific community early on regarding covid (specifically, when medical masks were in short supply, the CDC lied to the public about their effectiveness to try and lower the number of people panic buying them, which has rightfully tarnished their credibility), but you not getting sick without boosters doesn't mean the data is a lie.
The same-sex marriage thing is funny, because most people, even Republicans, support it, but there's still a strong contingent of the party that wants it taken away as part of the party's Christian Nationalist push.
While I sympathize with the wider concerns that led to the BLM protests and riots, you won't find me defending most of what happened that year lol. Law and order need to be upheld. Hopefully, someday, we can actually address the very real issues with policing in the U.S. that led to such an upsurge in anger as well.
If you'd like a dispassionate analysis of the economy under Biden vs Trump with data and sources, you can turn to this, for a start. Definitely seek out different sources that don't have an explicit ideological bias:
https://www.politifact.com/article/2024/mar/02/Biden-Trump-economy-who-did-better/
I don't respect beliefs founded in hatred, ignorance, and a yearning for authoritarian control, no. You shouldn't, either. There comes a point where things aren't simply matters of opinion. The modern GOP isn't getting this reaction from people because they disagree on tax policy.
@Trmn8r “What did you come with?” Here’s a copy/paste of my first comment!
“The last thing we need in the government is more old (especially Republican) men so I hope this new endeavor of his falls flat.”
Note that the words “especially Republicans” doesn’t rule out Democrats. Just so you don’t come back with “but but but you called out my side!”

@NintendoByNature Fantastic post!
Also thank you for acknowledging the past 4 years have been pretty rotten. Honestly the worst I've ever seen in my life. Everything is going the wrong way under this current administration.

Y'know, I'm gonna regret commenting here, but here goes. These comments are really showing people's true colors (to some extent), especially with the amount of comments that have been removed. I won't call anyone out, especially since quite a few people here are people I've had pleasant interactions with here or more likely on Nintendo Life, but these comments have been awful to read for the most part. This is absolutely an important discussion to have, but I don't think it's a conversation to have to this extent on a gaming news website. Sure, you can't avoid it when reporting on a political campaign like this, but do we NEED to discuss here so heavily why the state of US politics is at an all time low? Yeah, we're in a pretty bad spot over here, we've had some of the worst presidents of all time (not to say Trump or Biden are the worst, we've still had people like Nixon and Jackson after all), and there are a ton of horrible politicians on every area of the political compass, but again, this is a gaming news website. These are discussions for different places online or, if you want a chance at actually civil discussion, the real world. Me personally, I do in fact have my own political takes, but I'm going to refrain from giving any of them so as to not continue to drive this discussion here. I personally think Marty's making a bad choice here, but that's not because of his party or beliefs necessarily, it's because I think being a politician is one of the worst career options out there.
There you go. There's my "take" on this. Marty's a bit silly for willingly choosing to become a politician, but we're even more silly discussing politics in this way on a gaming news site. I know there's a low chance someone will actually see my comment and actually move this discussion to a different place, but I can at least hope someone agrees with me. As for me, I'm not going to be responding to any replies because this article is a bit of a wasteland and I don't plan to encourage anyone to make it worse.
There's not a lot I can say about this, except: ಠ_ಠ
Yoda says: censorship strong here it is.
Blocking some commenters in this comments section. Political extremists exposing themselves, no thanks, I want nothing to do with them.
Dear god... joining the cult of chump. Horrifying and disappointing.
I don’t like to wish someone fail at their endeavors but I really hope he falls flat on his face with this one. Nothing good will come from this.
@CrispyMango92 weird sexist and dog whistle racist comment.
@dreadful you sure do love stringing together words that make literally no sense.
@dreadful Extremists are gonna extremist.
I've seen Marty labeled as Legendary in more than a few articles. Legendary in gaming music to me would be the likes of Nobuo Uematsu or Yasunori Nishiki. Outside of the Halo soundtrack has Marty done anything to gain that level of reputation? I've never truly liked the Halo soundtrack-- the main theme is decent, but the rest is bland to me. I may just have zero taste though. I'm open to being an outlier in not liking Marty's music.
Does he still owe money? Heard congress gives you the best chance to beat the marked and get great trading tips you won't get anywhere else.
Quite the career change. This thread 😂 I’m late to it and my god, the usual loonies throwing tantrums when someone joins a party they don’t like. Probably the same people who like what Sweet baby are doing.
@Fenbops The people constantly preaching about tolerance happen to be the least tolerant. Many such cases. Sad.
