IGN has taken on a pretty thorough performance review of Dragon's Dogma 2 ahead of its public launch tomorrow, and the results are a bit of a mixed bag for the upcoming Capcom ARPG.
The review, which you can sit down and soak in via the video up above, goes over all versions of the game including Xbox Series X and S. Series S misses out on some of the higher-end features you can expect from Series X and PS5 - like ray tracing capabilities.
With Xbox Series X, the results are quite mixed, looking at this review. Image quality seems a fair bit better on PS5, even if the resolution figures should be pretty similar. However, frame rate is a win for Series X - Microsoft's higher-end system seems to turn in the best console performance figures at launch.

That performance win doesn't smooth everything over though, and the review does caution players who are sensitive to performance hiccups:
"If I was a betting man I would suspect over the next few months or so patches will come that will improve the consistency, if not the overall performance, across the board. None of this distracts from the superb game that Dragon's Dogma 2 is, but if you are sensitive to frame rate fluctuations, it may be worth giving them the time before embarking on this majestic journey."
Here at Pure Xbox, we largely agree with this sentiment too. Dragon's Dogma 2 isn't the smoothest performing game we've ever seen, especially at launch, but it's still an amazing adventure that's absolutely worth embarking on.

im playing the low frame dogma 1 on series rn and im mad cause the dragon always kills me right when its about to die. on easy mode. with op bob pawn.
the game doesn't want me playing it so its time for me to go. still worth the $5 and now i know not to buy dogma 2.
I will pick it up when it gets down to $20. Maybe it will be in a better state then.
I guess my LG OLED with VRR would be a win here? Still haven’t got through BG3 was scared away with the loss of progress glitch. So guess this would be one to add to a long list of epic games to play…..
Wait wait wait
Patch patch patch.
Gaming quality and performance going down hill.
This is what happens when you prioritise PS, ***** performance
@JonBoyJ absolutely it will hell Xbox is the only console to have real VRR
@UBERSICKO Makes sense that they’re going to prioritize the platform that the game is going to sell the most on.
I don’t watch IGN performance reviews. The guy who provides them (NX Gamer) is a huge PlayStation fanboy.
@UBERSICKO To be fair, they DO have a much larger potential audience on Playstation.
@JonBoyJ Yeah, I’ve been playing this on my Series X with an LG CX and the VRR makes a big difference. As I’ve played more, I’ve noticed a few areas of slowdown but for the most part it’s quite smooth and I’ve been happy.
P.S. I’m waiting for Digital Foundry’s analysis because IGN doesn’t know sh*t.
@Fenbops
I assume that you don't trust Destin Legarie then?
Cyberpunk and Starfield have taught me that there's little point playing these big releases until they've been out a year at least!! Then they're fixed, and cheaper!!
Lots of other games to play in the mean time
@rustyduck DD1 is sometimes stupidly difficult depending on which vocation you chose.
@UBERSICKO they both have real vrr, just the X has it at a system level rather than the need for developers to implement it. This can allow for a wider window in which it operates.
There is no such thing as fake vrr.
@ShadowofTwilight who’s that?
@Fenbops
Resident Xbox fanboy of IGN.
@Weebleman The PS5 doesn't, it's software based and very limited. Do some research
@UBERSICKO I just said that. Its still VRR though. I suggest it is you that needs to do the research my friend.
@ShadowofTwilight don’t know or watch him.
Reading the Digital Foundry breakdown on Eurogamer, it sounds like checkerboarding is broken on Xbox. That’s what is causing the image issues but sounds like something that should be fixed quickly. And Xbox has a 10% advantage in general when it comes to framerate.
@Weebleman You don't know what you're talking about otherwise you would know. The PS5 only does VRR 48Hz – 120Hz This means that if a PS5 game drops below 48fps when playing at 60Hz, it may exhibit judder as it falls out of the VRR range
@UBERSICKO again, this is exactly what i said. Its a limitiation of the hdmi 2.1 it uses . Its not 'fake VRR' which is the nonsense term you threw out. It has VRR the same as xbox but is limited due to the hdmi window it allows it to operate in. Which again, is what i originally said. There is no such thing as fake VRR
I dont understand why you continually repeat what i said originally and then accuse me of not knowing what im on about.
@Weebleman @UBERSICKO Are you 2 married?
@ZYDIO 3rd date.
@Weebleman Haha.
